Controllability on landmark manifolds for shapes and neural ODEs

Landmark manifolds consist of a collection of distinct points, and dynamics on this manifold can be used to represent flows, such as solutions of ODEs and flows deforming a shape. We will consider landmark configurations in the Euclidean space and how such configuration can be connected through flows of vector field. For every dimension equal or larger than two, we explicitly describe two vector fields whose flows can connect any pair of landmark configuration regardless of how many points are in the configuration. This property is called the exact universal interpolation property. For the case of dimension one, we show the same result holds for landmark configurations as long as they have the same relative order. In all dimensions, we are able to achieve controllability by combining a constant vector field with a polynomial vector field of degree three.

Comparison theorems on H-type sub-Riemannian manifolds

On H-type sub-Riemannian manifolds we establish sub-Hessian and sub-Laplacian comparison theorems which are uniform for a family of approximating Riemannian metrics converging to the sub-Riemannian one. We also prove a sharp sub-Riemannian Bonnet-Myers theorem that extends to this general setting results previously proved on contact and quaternionic contact manifolds.

A sub-Riemannian Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces in contact manifolds

We obtain a sub-Riemannian version of the classical Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We consider subsurfaces of a three dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifolds, and using a family of taming Riemannian metric, we obtain a pure sub-Riemannian result in the limit. In particular, we are able to recover topological information of the surface from the geometry around the characteristic set, i.e., the points where the tangent space to the surface and contact structure coincide. We both give a version for surfaces without boundary and surfaces with boundary.

The Prytz connections

The Prytz planimeter is a simple mechanical device that historically was used to approximate areas of plane regions. In this article, we present a mathematical description and analysis of the planimeter in terms of sub-Riemannian geometry and in terms of connections and horizontal lifts -- central concepts in differential geometry.
