Global flow structure and exact formal transseries of the Gubser flow in kinetic theory

In this work we introduce the generic conditions for the existence of a non-equilibrium attractor that is an invariant manifold determined by the long-wavelength modes of the physical system. We investigate the topological properties of the global flow structure of the Gubser flow for the Israel-Stewart theory and a kinetic model for the Boltzmann equation by employing Morse-Smale theory. We present a complete classification of the invariant submanifolds of the flow and determine all the possible flow lines connecting any pair of UV/IR fixed points. The formal transseries solutions to the Gubser dynamical system around the early-time (UV) and late-time (IR) fixed points are constructed and analyzed. It is proven that these solutions are purely perturbative (or power-law asymptotic) series with a finite radius of convergence. Based on these analyses, we find that Gubser-like expanding kinetic systems do not hydrodynamize owing to the failure of the hydrodynamization process which heavily relies on the classification of (non)hydrodynamic modes in the IR regime. This is in contrast to longitudinal boost-invariant plasmas where the asymptotic dynamics is described by a few terms of the hydrodynamic gradient expansion. We finally compare our results for both Bjorken and Gubser conformal kinetic models.

Hydrodynamization and non-equilibrium Green's functions in kinetic theory

Non-equilibrium Green's functions provide an efficient way to describe the evolution of the energy-momentum tensor during the early time pre-equilibrium stage of high-energy heavy ion collisions. Besides their practical relevance they also provide a meaningful way to address the question when and to what extent a hydrodynamic description of the system becomes applicable. Within the kinetic theory framework we derive a new method to calculate time dependent non-equilibrium Green's functions describing the evolution of energy and momentum perturbations on top of an evolving far-from-equilibrium background. We discuss the approach towards viscous hydrodynamics along with the emergence of various scaling phenomena for conformal systems. By comparing our results obtained in the relaxation time approximation to previous calculations in Yang-Mills kinetic theory, we further address the question which macroscopic features of the energy momentum tensor are sensitive to the underlying microscopic dynamics.

Flow of Hagedorn singularities and phase transitions in large $N$ gauge theories

We investigate the singularity structure of the $(-1)^F$ graded partition function in QCD with $n_f \geq 1$ massive adjoint fermions in the large-$N$ limit. Here, $F$ is fermion number and $N$ is the number of colors. The large $N$ partition function is made reliably calculable by taking space to be a small three-sphere $S^3$. Singularites in the graded partition function are related to phase transitions and to Hagedorn behavior in the $(-1)^F$-graded density of states. We study the flow of the singularities in the complex "inverse temperature" $β$ plane as a function of the quark mass. This analysis is a generalization of the Lee-Yang-Fisher-type analysis for a theory which is always in the thermodynamic limit thanks to the large $N$ limit. We identify two distinct mechanisms for the appearance of physical Hagedorn singularities and center-symmetry changing phase transitions at real positive $β$, inflow of singularities from the $β=0$ point, and collisions of complex conjugate pairs of singularities.

Non-perturbative rheological behavior of a far-from-equilibrium expanding plasma

For the Bjorken flow we investigate the hydrodynamization of different modes of the one-particle distribution function by analyzing its relativistic kinetic equations. We calculate the constitutive relations of each mode written as a multi-parameter trans-series encoding the non-perturbative dissipative contributions quantified by the Knudsen $Kn$ and inverse Reynolds $Re^{-1}$ numbers. At any given order in the asymptotic expansion of each mode, the transport coefficients get effectively renormalized by summing over all non-perturbative sectors appearing in the trans-series. This gives an effective description of the transport coefficients that provides a new renormalization scheme with an associated renormalization group equation, going beyond the realms of linear response theory. As a result, the renormalized transport coefficients feature a transition to their equilibrium fixed point, which is a neat diagnostics of transient non-Newtonian behavior. As a proof of principle, we verify the predictions of the effective theory with the numerical solutions of their corresponding evolution equations. Our studies strongly suggest that the phenomenological success of fluid dynamics far from local thermal equilibrium is due to the transient rheological behavior of the fluid.

Dynamical systems and nonlinear transient rheology of the far-from-equilibrium Bjorken flow

In relativistic kinetic theory, the one-particle distribution function is approximated by an asymptotic perturbative power series in Knudsen number which is divergent. For the Bjorken flow, we expand the distribution function in terms of its moments and study their nonlinear evolution equations. The resulting coupled dynamical system can be solved for each moment consistently using a multi-parameter transseries which makes the constitutive relations inherit the same structure. A new non-perturbative dynamical renormalization scheme is born out of this formalism that goes beyond the linear response theory. We show that there is a Lyapunov function, aka dynamical potential, which is, in general, a function of the moments and time satisfying Lyapunov stability conditions along RG flows connected to the asymptotic hydrodynamic fixed point. As a result, the transport coefficients get dynamically renormalized at every order in the time-dependent perturbative expansion by receiving non-perturbative corrections present in the transseries. The connection between the integration constants and the UV data is discussed using the language of dynamical systems. Furthermore, we show that the first dissipative correction in the Knudsen number to the distribution function is not only determined by the known effective shear viscous term but also a new high energy non-hydrodynamic mode. It is demonstrated that the survival of this new mode is intrinsically related to the nonlinear mode-to-mode coupling with the shear viscous term. Finally, we comment on some possible phenomenological applications of the proposed non-hydrodynamic transport theory.

Resurgence and Lefschetz thimble in 3d N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theories

We study a certain class of supersymmetric (SUSY) observables in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Chern-Simons (CS) matter theories and investigate how their exact results are related to the perturbative series with respect to coupling constants given by inverse CS levels. We show that the observables have nontrivial resurgent structures by expressing the exact results as a full transseries consisting of perturbative and non-perturbative parts. As real mass parameters are varied, we encounter Stokes phenomena at an infinite number of points, where the perturbative series becomes non-Borel-summable due to singularities on the positive real axis of the Borel plane. We also investigate the Stokes phenomena when the phase of the coupling constant is varied. For these cases, we find that the Borel ambiguities in the perturbative sector are canceled by those in nonperturbative sectors and end up with an unambiguous result which agrees with the exact result even on the Stokes lines. We also decompose the Coulomb branch localization formula, which is an integral representation for the exact results, into Lefschetz thimble contributions and study how they are related to the resurgent transseries. We interpret the non-perturbative effects appearing in the transseries as contributions of complexified SUSY solutions which formally satisfy the SUSY conditions but are not on the original path integral contour.

Bion non-perturbative contributions versus infrared renormalons in two-dimensional $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ models

We derive the semiclassical contributions from the real and complex bions in the two-dimensional $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ sigma model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^{1}$ with a twisted boundary condition. The bion configurations are saddle points of the complexified Euclidean action, which can be viewed as bound states of a pair of fractional instantons with opposite topological charges. We first derive the bion solutions by solving the equation of motion in the model with a potential which simulates an interaction induced by fermions in the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ quantum mechanics. The bion solutions have quasi-moduli parameters corresponding to the relative distance and phase between the constituent fractional instantons. By summing over the Kaluza-Klein modes of the quantum fluctuations around the bion backgrounds, we find that the effective action for the quasi-moduli parameters is renormalized and becomes a function of the dynamical scale (or the renormalized coupling constant). Based on the renormalized effective action, we obtain the semiclassical bion contribution in a weak coupling limit by making use of the Lefschetz thimble method. We find that the non-perturbative contribution vanishes in the supersymmetric case and it has an imaginary ambiguity which is consistent with the expected infrared renormalon ambiguity in non-supersymmetric cases. This is the first explicit result indicating the relation between the complex bion and the infrared renormalon.

Performance of Complex Langevin Simulation in 0+1 dimensional massive Thirring model at finite density

Statistical sampling with the complex Langevin (CL) equation is applied to (0+1)-dimensional Thirring model, and its uniform-field variant, at finite fermion chemical potential $μ$. The CL simulation reproduces a crossover behavior which is similar to but actually deviating from the exact solution in the transition region, where we confirm that the CL simulation becomes susceptible to the drift singularities, i.e., zeros of the fermion determinant. In order to simulate the transition region with the CL method correctly, we examine two approaches, a reweighting method and a model deformation, in both of which a single thimble with an attractive fixed point practically covers the integration domain and the CL sampling avoids the determinant zeros. It turns out that these methods can reproduce the correct crossover behavior of the original model with using reference ensembles in the complexified space. However, they need evaluation of the reweighting factor, which scales with the system size exponentially. We discuss feasibility of applying these methods to the Thirring model and to more realistic theories.

Resurgence Structure to All Orders of Multi-bions in Deformed SUSY Quantum Mechanics

We investigate the resurgence structure in quantum mechanical models originating in 2d non-linear sigma models with emphasis on nearly supersymmetric and quasi-exactly solvable parameter regimes. By expanding the ground state energy in powers of a supersymmetry-breaking deformation parameter $δε$, we derive exact results for the expansion coefficients. In the class of models described by real multiplets, the ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy has a non-Borel summable asymptotic series, which gives rise to imaginary ambiguities leading to rich resurgence structure. We discuss the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics (QM) as an example and show that the semiclassical contributions from complex multi-bion solutions correctly reproduce the corresponding part in the exact result including the imaginary ambiguities. As a typical model described by chiral multiplets, we discuss the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ QM and show that the exact ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy can be completely reconstructed from the semiclassical multi-bion contributions. Although the ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy has trivial resurgence structure, a simple but rich resurgence structure appears at ${\mathcal O}(δε^{2})$. We show the complete cancellation between the ${\mathcal O}(δε^{2})$ imaginary ambiguities arising from the non-Borel summable perturbation series and those in the semiclassical contributions of $N-1$ complex bion solutions. We also discuss the resurgence structure of a squashed ${\mathbb C}P^1$ QM.

Exact Resurgent Trans-series and Multi-Bion Contributions to All Orders

The full resurgent trans-series is found exactly in near-supersymmetric $\mathbb C P^1$ quantum mechanics. By expanding in powers of the SUSY breaking deformation parameter, we obtain the first and second expansion coefficients of the ground state energy. They are absolutely convergent series of nonperturbative exponentials corresponding to multi-bions with perturbation series on those background. We obtain all multi-bion exact solutions for finite time interval in the complexified theory. We sum the classical multi-bion contributions that reproduce the exact result supporting the resurgence to all orders. This is the first result in the quantum mechanical model where the resurgent trans-series structure is verified to all orders in nonperturbative multi-bion contributions.

Numerical Analysis of Discretized ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ SYM on Polyhedra

We perform a numerical simulation of the two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the discretized curved space. The $U(1)_{A}$ anomaly of the continuum theory is maintained also in the discretized theory as an unbalance of the number of the fermions. In the process, we propose a new phase-quenched approximation, which we call the "anomaly-phase-quenched (APQ) method", to make the partition function and observables well-defined by $U(1)_{A}$ phase cancellation. By adopting APQ method, we estimate the Ward-Takahashi identity for exact SUSY on lattice and clarify contribution of the pseudo zero-modes to the pfaffian phase.

Monte Carlo study of Lefschetz thimble structure in one-dimensional Thirring model at finite density

We consider the one-dimensional massive Thirring model formulated on the lattice with staggered fermions and an auxiliary compact vector (link) field, which is exactly solvable and shows a phase transition with increasing the chemical potential of fermion number: the crossover at a finite temperature and the first order transition at zero temperature. We complexify its path-integration on Lefschetz thimbles and examine its phase transition by hybrid Monte Carlo simulations on the single dominant thimble. We observe a discrepancy between the numerical and exact results in the crossover region for small inverse coupling $β$ and/or large lattice size $L$, while they are in good agreement at the lower and higher density regions. We also observe that the discrepancy persists in the continuum limit keeping the temperature finite and it becomes more significant toward the low-temperature limit. This numerical result is consistent with our analytical study of the model's thimble structure. And these results imply that the contributions of subdominant thimbles should be summed up in order to reproduce the first order transition in the low-temperature limit.

Anomaly and Sign problem in $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ SYM on Polyhedra : Numerical Analysis

We investigate the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the discretized curved space (polyhedra). We first revisit that the number of supersymmetries of the continuum $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ SYM theory on any curved manifold can be enhanced at least to two by introducing an appropriate $U(1)$ gauge background associated with the $U(1)_{V}$ symmetry. We then show that the generalized Sugino model on the discretized curved space, which was proposed in our previous work, can be identified to the discretization of this SUSY enhanced theory, where one of the supersymmetries remains and the other is broken but restored in the continuum limit. We find that the $U(1)_{A}$ anomaly exists also in the discretized theory as a result of an unbalance of the number of the fermions proportional to the Euler characteristics of the polyhedra. We then study this model by using the numerical Monte-Carlo simulation. We propose a novel phase-quench method called "anomaly-phase-quenched approximation" with respect to the $U(1)_A$ anomaly. We numerically show that the Ward-Takahashi (WT) identity associated with the remaining supersymmetry is realized by adopting this approximation. We figure out the relation between the sign (phase) problem and pseudo-zero-modes of the Dirac operator. We also show that the divergent behavior of the scalar one-point function gets milder as the genus of the background increases. These are the first numerical observations for the supersymmetric lattice model on the curved space with generic topologies.

Non-perturbative Contributions from Complexified Solutions in $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ Models

We discuss the non-perturbative contributions from real and complex saddle point solutions in the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ quantum mechanics with fermionic degrees of freedom, using the Lefschetz thimble formalism beyond the gaussian approximation. We find bion solutions, which correspond to (complexified) instanton-antiinstanton configurations stabilized in the presence of the fermionic degrees of freedom. By computing the one-loop determinants in the bion backgrounds, we obtain the leading order contributions from both the real and complex bion solutions. To incorporate quasi zero modes which become nearly massless in a weak coupling limit, we regard the bion solutions as well-separated instanton-antiinstanton configurations and calculate a complexified quasi moduli integral based on the Lefschetz thimble formalism. The non-perturbative contributions from the real and complex bions are shown to cancel out in the supersymmetric case and give an (expected) ambiguity in the non-supersymmetric case, which plays a vital role in the resurgent trans-series. For nearly supersymmetric situation, evaluation of the Lefschetz thimble gives results in precise agreement with those of the direct evaluation of the Schrödinger equation. We also perform the same analysis for the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics and point out some important differences showing that the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics does not correctly describe the 1d limit of the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ field theory of $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$.

Application of the Lefschetz thimble formulation to the (0+1) dim. Thirring model at finite density

Based on the Lefschetz thimble formulation of path-integration, we analyze the (0+1) dimensional Thirring model at finite chemical potentials and perform hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulations. We adopt the lattice action defined with the staggered fermion and a compact link field for the auxiliary vector field. We firstly locate the critical points (saddle points) of the gradient flows within the subspace of time-independent (complex) link field, and study the thiemble structure and the Stokes phenomenon to identify the thimbles which contribute to the path-integral. Then, we perform HMC simulations on the single dominant thimble and compare the results to the exact solution. The numerical results are in agreement with the exact ones in small and large chemical potential regions, while they show some deviation in the crossover region in the chemical potential. We also comment on the necessity of the contributions from multiple thimbles in the crossover region.

Gauge/gravity duality and lattice simulations of one dimensional SYM with sixteen supercharges

We study the gauge/gravity duality for supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in 1+0 dimension with sixteen supercharges using lattice simulations. The conjectured duality states that the gravity side is described by N D0-branes in type IIA superstring at large N, and the thermal gauge theory reproduces the black hole thermodynamics at low temperature. In this paper, we explain the Sugino lattice action used in the simulations in detail, and examine the supersymmetric Ward-Takahashi identity to confirm the restoration of supersymmetry in the continuum limit. We also estimate the internal energy of the black hole from the lattice results for N=14,32, and find that it smoothly approaches the prediction of the gravity side as the temperature decreases.
