Transiting exoplanets from the CoRoT space mission VIII. CoRoT-7b: the first Super-Earth with measured radius

We report the discovery of very shallow (DF/F = 3.4 10-4), periodic dips in the light curve of an active V = 11.7 G9V star observed by the CoRoT satellite, which we interpret as due to the presence of a transiting companion. We describe the 3-colour CoRoT data and complementary ground-based observations that support the planetary nature of the companion. Methods. We use CoRoT color information, good angular resolution ground-based photometric observations in- and out- of transit, adaptive optics imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy and preliminary results from Radial Velocity measurements, to test the diluted eclipsing binary scenarios. The parameters of the host star are derived from optical spectra, which were then combined with the CoRoT light curve to derive parameters of the companion. We examine carefully all conceivable cases of false positives, and all tests performed support the planetary hypothesis. Blends with separation larger than 0.40 arcsec or triple systems are almost excluded with a 8 10-4 risk left. We conclude that, as far as we have been exhaustive, we have discovered a planetary companion, named CoRoT-7b, for which we derive a period of 0.853 59 +/- 3 10-5 day and a radius of Rp = 1.68 +/- 0.09 REarth. Analysis of preliminary radial velocity data yields an upper limit of 21 MEarth for the companion mass, supporting the finding. CoRoT-7b is very likely the first Super-Earth with a measured radius.

On the apsidal motion of BP Vulpeculae

BP Vulpeculae is a bright eclipsing binary system showing apsidal motion. It was found in an earlier study that it shows retrograde apsidal motion which contradicts theory. In this paper we present the first $BV$ light curve of the system and its light curve solution as well as seven new times of the minima from the years 1959-1963. This way we could expanded the baseline of the investigation to five decades. Based on this longer baseline we concluded that the apsidal motion is prograde agreeing with the theoretical expectations and its period is about 365 years and the determined internal structure constant is close to the theoretically expected one.

The Young, Massive, Star Cluster Sandage-96 After the Explosion of SN 2004dj in NGC 2403

The bright Type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2004dj occurred within the young, massive stellar cluster Sandage-96 in a spiral arm of NGC 2403. New multi-wavelength observations obtained with several ground-based and space-based telescopes are combined to study the radiation from Sandage-96 after SN 2004dj faded away. Sandage-96 started to dominate the flux in the optical bands starting September 2006 (~800 d after explosion). The optical fluxes are equal to the pre-explosion ones within the observational uncertainties. An optical Keck spectrum obtained ~900 d after explosion shows the dominant blue continuum from the cluster stars shortward of 6000 Åas well as strong SN nebular emission lines redward. The integrated spectral energy distribution (SED) of the cluster has been extended into the ultraviolet region by archival XMM-Newton and new Swift observations, and compared with theoretical models. The outer parts of the cluster have been resolved by the Hubble Space Telescope, allowing the construction of a color-magnitude diagram. The fitting of the cluster SED with theoretical isochrones results in cluster ages between 10--40 Myr, depending on metallicity and the model family. The isochrone fitting indicates that the resolved part of the cluster has a bimodal age distribution: a younger population at ~10--16 Myr, and an older one at ~32--100 Myr which is similar to the age distribution of the nearby field stars. These stars may have been captured from the field during the cluster formation. The young age of Sandage-96 suggest 12 < M_prog < 20 M_\odot as the most probable mass range for the progenitor of SN 2004dj. This is consistent with, but perhaps slightly higher than, most of the other Type II-plateau SN progenitor masses determined so far.

EM Cygni: a study of its eclipse timings

EM Cygni is a Z Cam-subtype eclipsing dwarf nova. Its orbital period variations were reported in the past but the results were in conflict to each other while other studies allowed the possibility of no period variation. In this study we report accurate new times of minima of this eclipsing binary and update its O-C diagram. We also estimate the mass transfer rate in EM Cygni system and conclude that the mass transfer is far from the critical value. The mass transfer rate determined from the eclipse timings is in agreement with the spectroscopically determined value.

The 2004--2006 outburst and environment of V1647 Ori

(Abridged) We studied the brightness and spectral evolution of the young eruptive star V1647 Ori during its recent outburst in the period 2004 February - 2006 Sep. We performed a photometric follow-up in the bands V, R_C, I_C, J, H, K_s as well as visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The main results are as follows: The brightness of V1647 Ori stayed more than 4 mag above the pre-outburst level until 2005 October when it started a rapid fading. In the high state we found a periodic component in the optical light curves with a period of 56 days. The delay between variations of the star and variations in the brightness of clump of nearby nebulosity corresponds to an angle of 61+/-14 degrees between the axis of the nebula and the line of sight. A steady decrease of HI emission line fluxes could be observed. In 2006 May, in the quiescent phase, the HeI 1.083 line was observed in emission, contrary to its deep blueshifted absorption observed during the outburst. The J-H and H-K_s color maps of the infrared nebula reveal an envelope around the star. The color distribution of the infrared nebula suggests reddening of the scattered light inside a thick circumstellar disk. We show that the observed properties of V1647 Ori could be interpreted in the framework of the thermal instability models of Bell et al. (1995). V1647 Ori might belong to a new class of young eruptive stars, defined by relatively short timescales, recurrent outbursts, modest increase in bolometric luminosity and accretion rate, and an evolutionary state earlier than that of typical EXors.

Physical parameters and multiplicity of five southern close eclipsing binaries

Aims: Detect tertiary components of close binaries from spectroscopy and light curve modelling; investigate light-travel time effect and the possibility of magnetic activity cycles; measure mass-ratios for unstudied systems and derive absolute parameters. Methods: We carried out new photometric and spectroscopic observations of five bright (V<10.5 mag) close eclipsing binaries, predominantly in the southern skies. We obtained full Johnson BV light curves, which were modelled with the Wilson-Devinney code. Radial velocities were measured with the cross-correlation method using IAU radial velocity standards as spectral templates. Period changes were studied with the O-C method, utilising published epochs of minimum light (XY Leo) and ASAS photometry (VZ Lib). Results: For three objects (DX Tuc, QY Hya, V870 Ara), absolute parameters have been determined for the first time. We detect spectroscopically the tertiary components in XY Leo, VZ Lib and discover one in QY Hya. For XY Leo we update the light-time effect parameters and detect a secondary periodicity of about 5100 d in the O$-$C diagram that may hint about the existence of short-period magnetic cycles. A combination of recent photometric data shows that the orbital period of the tertiary star in VZ Lib is likely to be over 1500 d. QY Hya is a semi-detached X-ray active binary in a triple system with K and M-type components, while V870 Ara is a contact binary with the third smallest spectroscopic mass-ratio for a W UMa star to date (q=0.082+/-0.030). This small mass-ratio, being close to the theoretical minimum for contact binaries, suggests that V870 Ara has the potential of constraining evolutionary scenarios of binary mergers. The inferred distances to these systems are compatible with the Hipparcos parallaxes.

A possible interrelation between the estimated luminosity distances and internal extinctions of type Ia supernovae

We studied the statistical properties of the luminosity distance and internal extinction data of type Ia supernovae in the lists published by Tonry et al. (2003) and Barris et al. (2004). After selecting the luminosity distance in an empty Universe as a reference level we divided the sample into low $z<0.25$ and high $z \ge 0.25$ parts. We further divided these subsamples by the median of the internal extinction. Performing sign tests using the standardized residuals between the estimated logarithmic luminosity distances and those of an empty universe, on the four subsamples separately, we recognized that the residuals were distributed symmetrically in the low redshift region, independently from the internal extinction. On the contrary, the low extinction part of the data of $z \ge 0.25$ clearly showed an excess of the points with respect to an empty Universe which was not the case in the high extinction region. This diversity pointed to an interrelation between the estimated luminosity distance and internal extinction. To characterize quantitatively this interrelation we introduced a hidden variable making use of the technics of factor analysis. After subtracting that part of the residual which was explained by the hiddenmaking use of the technics of factor analysis. After subtracting that part of the residual which was explained by the hidden variable we obtained luminosity distances which were already free from interrelation with internal extinction. Fitting the corrected luminosity distances with cosmological models we concluded that the SN Ia data alone did not exclude the possibility of the $Λ=0$ solution.

The first year of SN 2004dj in NGC 2403

New BVRI photometry and optical spectroscopy of the Type IIp supernova 2004dj in NGC 2403, obtained during the first year since discovery, are presented. The progenitor cluster, Sandage 96, is also detected on pre-explosion frames. The light curve indicates that the explosion occured about 30 days before discovery, and the plateau phase lasted about +110 \pm 20 days after that. The plateau-phase spectra have been modelled with the SYNOW spectral synthesis code using H, NaI, TiII, ScII, FeII and BaII lines. The SN distance is inferred from the Expanding Photosphere Method and the Standard Candle Method applicable for SNe IIp. They resulted in distances that are consistent with each other as well as earlier Cepheid- and Tully-Fisher distances. The average distance, D = 3.47 \pm 0.29 Mpc is proposed for SN 2004dj and NGC 2403. The nickel mass produced by the explosion is estimated as 0.02 \pm 0.01 M_o. The SED of the progenitor cluster is reanalysed by fitting population synthesis models to our observed BVRI data supplemented by U and JKH magnitudes from the literature. The chi^2-minimization revealed a possible "young" solution with cluster age T_{cl} = 8 Myr, and an "old" solution with T_{cl} = 20 - 30 Myr. The "young" solution would imply a progenitor mass M > 20 M_o, which is higher than the previously detected progenitor masses for Type II SNe.

The rapid fading of V1647 Orionis: the sudden end of a FUor-type eruption?

V1647 Ori is a young eruptive star, which went into outburst at the end of 2003. Since then, the object is gradually fading. In October 2005, however, V1647 Ori started a very rapid fading, approximately 1 mag/month in I_C as opposed to 0.1 mag/month previously. According to the colour changes, the rapid fading is not caused by increasing extinction, which suggests that the observed brightness changes are intrinsic. Supposing that the fading rate remains unchanged, the star will return to the pre-outburst state by mid-December 2005.

Indirect evidence for short period magnetic cycles in W UMa stars

Complex period variations of five W UMa type binaries (AB And, OO Aql, DK Cyg, V566 Oph, U Peg) were investigated by analyzing their O--C diagrams, and several common features were found. Four of the five systems show secular period variations at a constant rate on the order of |dP / dt 1/P | ~ 10E-7 1/yr. In the case of AB And, OO Aql, and U Peg a high-amplitude, nearly one-century long quasi-sinusoidal pattern was also found. It might be explained as light-time effect, or by some magnetic phenomena, although the mathematical, and consequently the physical, parameters of these fits are very problematic, as the obtained periods are very close to the length of the total data range. The most interesting feature of the studied O--C diagrams is a low amplitude (2-4 x 10E-3 d) modulation with a period around 18--20 yr in four of the five cases. This phenomenon might be indirect evidence of some magnetic cycle in late-type overcontact binaries as an analog to the observed activity cycles in RS CVn systems.

Distance of the Hypernova SN 2002ap via the Expanding Photosphere Method

New optical photometric and spectroscopic data of the bright hypernova SN 2002ap are presented. The obtained BVRI light curves as well as the optical spectra agree well with other published data series. The distance has been inferred by applying the Expanding Photosphere Method for the data around maximum. The derived 6.7 Mpc is in good agreement with recent photometric distances of M74. However, the total (random plus systematic) uncertainty of the EPM-distance is at least 4.5 Mpc (about 70 %). The physical parameters of the SN have been determined via simplified analytic models of the light and velocity curves. It is confirmed that SN 2002ap was a less energetic hypernova, the kinetic energy was 4 - 8 10^51 erg, and the reddening-free absolute bolometric magnitude reached -16.63 mag (corresponding to L_bol = 3.47 10^8 L_solar), about 2 magnitude less than the prototype hypernova SN 1998bw.

Long-term evolution of FU Orionis objects at infrared wavelengths

We investigate the brightness evolution of 7 FU Orionis systems in the 1-100 micrometer wavelength range using data from the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The ISO measurements were supplemented with 2MASS and MSX observations performed in the same years as the ISO mission (1995-98). The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) based on these data points were compared with earlier ones derived from the IRAS photometry as well as from ground-based observations carried out around the epoch 1983. In 3 cases (Z CMa, Parsamian 21, V1331 Cyg) no difference between the two epochs was seen within the measurement uncertainties. V1057 Cyg, V1515 Cyg and V1735 Cyg have become fainter at near-infrared wavelengths while V346 Nor has become slightly brighter. V1057 Cyg exhibits a similar flux change also in the mid-infrared. At lambda >= 60 micrometer most of the sources remained constant; only V346 Nor seems to fade. Our data on the long-term evolution of V1057 Cyg agree with the model predictions of Kenyon & Hartmann (1991) and Turner et al. (1997) at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths, but disagree at lambda > 25 micrometer. We discuss if this observational result at far-infrared wavelengths could be understood in the framework of the existing models.

On the properties of contact binary stars

A catalogue of light curve solutions of contact binary stars has been compiled. It contains the results of 159 light curve solutions. Properties of contact binary stars were studied by using the catalogue data. As it is well known since Lucy's (1968a,b) and Mochnacki's (1981) works, primary components transfer their own energy to the secondary star via the common envelope around the two stars. This transfer was parameterized by a transfer parameter (ratio of the observed and intrinsic luminosities of the primary star). We proved that this transfer parameter is a simple function of the mass and luminosity ratio. This newly found relation is valid for all systems except H type systems which have a different relation. We introduced a new type of contact binary stars: H subtype systems which have a large mass ratio ($q>0.72$). These systems show highly different behaviour on the luminosity ratio - transfer parameter diagram from other systems and according to our results the energy transfer rate is less efficient in them than in other type of contact binary stars. We also show that different types of contact binaries have well defined locations on the mass ratio - luminosity ratio diagram. All contact binary systems do not follow Lucy's relation ($L_2/L_1 = (M_2/M_1)^{0.92}$). No strict mass ratio - luminosity ratio relation of contact binary stars exists.

The infrared properties of the new outburst star IRAS 05436-0007 in quiescent phase

We compiled and investigated the infrared/sub-mm/mm SED of the new outburst star IRAS 05436-0007 in quiescent phase. The star is a flat-spectrum source, with an estimated total luminosity of L_bol ~ 5.6 L_sun, typical of low-mass T Tauri stars. The derived circumstellar mass of 0.5 M_sun is rather high among low-mass YSOs. The observed SED differs from the SEDs of typical T Tauri stars and of 4 well-known EXors, and resembles more the SEDs of FU Orionis objects indicating the presence of a circumstellar envelope. IRAS 05436-0007 seems to be a Class II source with an age of approximately 4x10^5 yr. In this evolutionary stage an accretion disk is already fully developed, though a circumstellar envelope may also be present. Observations of the present outburst will provide additional knowledge on the source.

Long-term evolution of FU Ori-type stars at infrared wavelengths

FU Orionis-type stars form a small class of variable Young Stellar Objects, defined by an optical outburst of 5-6 mag followed by gradual fading on a timescale of decades. Since the phenomenon is connected to the circumstellar medium the infrared emission spectrum is also expected to change after the outburst. The fading phase after the outburst is well documented in the optical/near-infrared, but not at far-infrared wavelengths. We investigated the brightness evolution of 7 FU Orionis systems in the 1-200 μm wavelength range. We compiled spectral energy distributions (SEDS) using data from the Infared Space Observatory, 2MASS and MSX (these observations were performed around 1995-1998). These SEDs were compared with earlier ones based on IRAS photometry and ground-based observations carried out around 1983. During this period of 15 years some objects remained unchanged, while others became fainter, but only in the near- and mid-infrared part of the spectrum. Since the wavelength dependence of the fading provides crucial information on the physics of the phenomenon, we studied in detail the case of V1057 Cyg.

The Type la Supernova 2001V in NGC 3987

CCD photometry of the type Ia SN 2001V occured in the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3987 is presented. The observations made through Johnson-Cousins BVRI filters were collected from Feb. 24 (t = -8 days, with respect to B-maximum), up to May 5 (t = +62 days). The light curves are analyzed with the revised Multi-Colour Light Curve Shape (MLCS) method by fitting template vectors to the observed light curves simultaneously. The reddening of SN 2001V is estimated to be E(B-V)=0.05 mag, while the galactic component is E(B-V) = 0.02 mag, suggesting that part of the reddening may be due to the ISM in the host galaxy. The Delta parameter in MLCS converged to -0.47 mag, indicating that this SN was overluminous relative to the majority of Type Ia SNe. The inferred distance to its host galaxy, NGC 3987, is 74.5 \pm 5 Mpc, which is in good agreement with recently determined kinematic distances, based on radial velocity corrected for Virgo-infall and Hubble constant H_0 = 65 km/s/Mpc.

Distance to the Active Galaxy NGC 6951 via the Type Ia Supernova 2000E

CCD-photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy of the bright supernova SN 2000E in NGC 6951 are presented. Both the light curve extending up to 150 days past maximum and the spectra obtained at 1 month past maximum confirm that SN 2000E is of Type Ia. The reddening of SN 2000E is determined as E(B-V)=0.36+/-0.15, its error is mainly due to uncertainties in the predicted SN (B-V) colour at late epochs. The V(RI)_C light curves are analyzed with the Multi-Colour Light Curve Shape (MLCS) method. The shape of the late light curve suggests that SN 2000E was overluminous by about 0.5 mag at maximum comparing with a fiducial SN Ia. This results in an updated distance of 33+/-8 Mpc of NGC 6951 (corrected for interstellar absorption). The SN-based distance modulus is larger by about +0.7 mag than the previous Tully-Fisher estimates. However, possible systematic errors due to ambiguities in the reddening determination and estimates of the maximum luminosity of SN 2000E may plague the present distance measurement.
