Plans for the LIGO-TAMA Joint Search for Gravitational Wave Bursts

We describe the plans for a joint search for unmodelled gravitational wave bursts being carried out by the LIGO and TAMA collaborations using data collected during February-April 2003. We take a conservative approach to detection, requiring candidate gravitational wave bursts to be seen in coincidence by all four interferometers. We focus on some of the complications of performing this coincidence analysis, in particular the effects of the different alignments and noise spectra of the interferometers.

New physics and astronomy with the new gravitational-wave observatories

Gravitational-wave detectors with sensitivities sufficient to measure the radiation from astrophysical sources are rapidly coming into existence. By the end of this decade, there will exist several ground-based instruments in North America, Europe, and Japan, and the joint American-European space-based antenna LISA should be either approaching orbit or in final commissioning in preparation for launch. The goal of these instruments will be to open the field of gravitational-wave astronomy: using gravitational radiation as an observational window on astrophysics and the universe. In this article, we summarize the current status of the various detectors currently being developed, as well as future plans. We also discuss the scientific reach of these instruments, outlining what gravitational-wave astronomy is likely to teach us about the universe.

A Compact Gas Cerenkov Detector with Novel Optics

We discuss the design and performance of a threshold Cerenkov counter for identification of charged hadrons. The radiator is pressurized gas, which is contained in thin-walled cylindrical modules. A mirror system of novel design transports Cerenkov photons to photomultiplier tubes. This system is compact, contains relatively little material, and has a large fraction of active volume. A prototype of a module designed for the proposed CLEO III detector has been studied using cosmic rays. Results from these studies show good agreement with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the module and indicate that it should achieve separation of pions and kaons at the 2.5-3.0sigma level in the momentum range 0.8-2.8 GeV/c. We predict performance for specific physics analyses using a GEANT-based simulation package.
