Radiative contribution to the effective potential in a composite Higgs model

The SU(4) gauge theory with two flavors of Dirac fermions in the sextet representation shares features of a candidate for a composite Higgs model. The analogue of the Higgs multiplet of the Standard Model lives in the Goldstone manifold resulting from spontaneous breaking of the global symmetry SU(4) to SO(4). The Higgs potential arises from interaction with the particles of the Standard Model. We have computed the gauge boson contribution to the Higgs potential, using valence overlap fermions on a Wilson-clover sea. The calculation is similar to that of the electromagnetic mass splitting of the pion multiplet in QCD.

Radiative contribution to the effective potential in composite Higgs models from lattice gauge theory

We develop methods to calculate the electroweak gauge boson contribution to the effective Higgs potential in the context of composite Higgs models, using lattice gauge theory. The calculation is analogous to that of the electromagnetic mass splitting of the pion multiplet in QCD. We discuss technical details of carrying out this calculation, including modeling of the momentum and fermion-mass dependence of the underlying current-current correlation function; direct integration of the correlation function over momentum; and fits based on the minimal-hadron approximation. We show results of a numerical study using valence overlap fermions, carried out in an SU(4) gauge theory with two flavors of Dirac fermions in the two-index antisymmetric representation.

Linking Chiral and Topological Aspects of the Quark-Quark Interaction, in QCD

We present the results of a recent investigation of the short-distance structure of non-perturbative interaction between light quarks. We analyze the connection between topology and the dynamics responsible for the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. By measuring some appropriate correlation functions on the lattice, we provide compelling evidence for instanton-induced dynamics.

Studying the role of the 't Hooft interaction in QCD, by means of lattice simulations

We report on a recent investigation on the dynamics of light quarks, at intermediate and low energy. By measuring some appropriate correlation functions on the lattice, it is possible to probe the Dirac and flavor structure of the non-perturbative quark-quark interaction and look directly for signatures of the 't Hooft Lagrangian. Results obtained with chiral fermions strongly support the instanton picture and the phenomenological parameters of the Instanton Liquid Model

Topological susceptibility with the improved Asqtad action

As a test of the chiral properties of the improved Asqtad (staggered fermion) action, we have been measuring the topological susceptibility as a function of quark masses for 2 + 1 dynamical flavors. We report preliminary results, which show reasonable agreement with leading order chiral perturbation theory for lattice spacing less than 0.1 fm. The total topological charge, however, shows strong persistence over Monte Carlo time.

Thermodynamics with 3 and 2+1 Flavors of Improved Staggered Quarks

We present preliminary results from exploring the phase diagram of finite temperature QCD with three degenerate flavors and with two light flavors and the mass of the third held approximately at the strange quark mass. We use an order $α_s^2 a^2, a^4$ Symanzik improved gauge action and an order $α_s a^2, a^4$ improved staggered quark action. The improved staggered action leads to a dispersion relation with diminished lattice artifacts, and hence better thermodynamic properties. It decreases the flavor symmetry breaking of staggered quarks substantially, and we estimate that at the transition temperature for an $N_t=8$ to $N_t=10$ lattice {\em all} pions will be lighter than the lightest kaon. Preliminary results on lattices with $N_t=4$, 6 and 8 are presented.

Zero Temperature String Breaking with Staggered Quarks

The separation of a heavy quark and antiquark pair leads to the formation of a tube of flux, or "string", which should break in the presence of light quark-antiquark pairs. This expected zero-temperature phenomenon has proven elusive in simulations of lattice QCD. In an extension of work reported last year we present clear evidence for string breaking in QCD with two flavors of dynamical staggered sea quarks and apply our results to a simple three-state mixing model for string breaking. We find that mixing is weak and falls to zero at level crossing.

Quark Loop Effects with an Improved Staggered Action

We have been studying effects of dynamical quarks on various hadronic observables, using our recently formulated improvement for staggered fermions. To illustrate improvement, we show that the light hadron spectrum in the quenched approximation gives remarkably good scaling. We highlight three new results: (1) We find no apparent quark loop effects in the Edinburgh plot with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks at a = 0.14 fm. (2) We show that dynamical quarks modify the shape of the heavy quark potential. (3) We present results hinting at meson decay effects in light hadron spectroscopy.

The static quark potential in three flavor QCD

We study the effects of dynamical quarks on the static quark potential at distances shorter than those where string breaking is expected. Quenched calculations and calculations with three flavors of dynamical quarks are done on sets of lattices with the lattice spacings matched within about one percent. The effect of the sea quarks on the shape of the potential is clearly visible. We investigate the consequences of these effects in a very crude model, namely solving Schroedinger's equation in the resulting potential.

Scaling tests of the improved Kogut-Susskind quark action

Improved lattice actions for Kogut-Susskind quarks have been shown to improve rotational symmetry and flavor symmetry. In this work we find improved scaling behavior of the rho and nucleon masses expressed in units of a length scale obtained from the static quark potential, and better behavior of the Dirac operator in instanton backgrounds.

Update on the hadron spectrum with two flavors of staggered quarks

We present an update on the MILC Collaboration's light hadron spectrum calculation with two flavors of dynamical, staggered quarks. We present extrapolations of the nucleon to rho mass ratio to the continuum limit for fixed values of the pi to rho mass ratio including the physical one.

Recent MILC spectrum results

We report on results from three spectrum calculations with staggered quarks: 1) a quenched calculation with the standard action for the gluons and quarks; 2) a quenched calculation with improved actions for both the gluons and quarks; and 3) a calculation with two flavors of dynamical quarks using the standard actions for the gluons and quarks.

Baryon Density Correlations in the Quark Plasma, MIMD Lattice Calculation

As part of an ongoing effort to characterize the high temperature phase of QCD, we measure the quark baryon density in the vicinity of a fixed test quark and compare it with similar measurements at low temperature and at the crossover temperature. Such an observable has also been studied by the Vienna group. We find an extremely weak correlation at high temperature, suggesting that small color singlet clusters are unimportant in the thermal ensemble. We also find that at T = 0.75 T_c the induced quark number shows a surprisingly large component attributable to baryonic screening. A simulation of a simple flux tube model produces results that suggest a plausible scenario: As the crossover temperature is approached from below, baryonic states proliferate. Above the crossover temperature the mean size of color singlet clusters grows explosively, resulting in an effective electrostatic deconfinement.

Finite Size Effects on the QCD Spectrum Revisited

We have continued our study of finite size effects in the QCD spectrum on lattices ranging in size from $8^3\times 24$ to $16^3\times24$. We have increased our statistics for quark mass $am_q=0.025$ for the smallest lattice size. In addition, we have studied quark mass 0.0125 for lattice sizes $12^3\times24$ and $16^3\times24$. These lattice sizes correspond to a box 1.8--3.6 fm on a side when the rho mass at zero quark mass is used to set the scale. We discuss the nucleon to rho mass ratio at a smaller value of $m_π/m_ρ$ than previously studied with two dynamical flavors.

More about orbitally excited hadrons from lattice QCD

This is a second paper describing the calculation of spectroscopy for orbitally excited states from lattice simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics. New features include higher statistics for P-wave systems and first results for the spectroscopy of D-wave mesons and baryons, for relatively heavy quark masses. We parameterize the Coulomb gauge wave functions for P-wave and D-wave systems and compare them to those of their corresponding S-wave states.

Hadron Spectrum in QCD with Valence Wilson Fermions and Dynamical Staggered Fermions at $6/g^2=5.6

We present an analysis of hadronic spectroscopy for Wilson valence quarks with dynamical staggered fermions at lattice coupling $6/g^2 = β=5.6$ at sea quark mass $am_q=0.01$ and 0.025, and of Wilson valence quarks in quenched approximation at $β=5.85$ and 5.95, both on $16^3 \times 32$ lattices. We make comparisons with our previous results with dynamical staggered fermions at the same parameter values but on $16^4$ lattices doubled in the temporal direction.

QCD Hadron Spectroscopy with Staggered Dynamical Quarks at $β= 5.6$

We present preliminary results from the 1991 HEMCGC simulations with staggered dynamical fermions on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice at $β= 5.6$ with sea quark masses $am_q = 0.025$ and 0.01. The spectroscopy was done both for staggered valence quarks with mass equal to the sea quark masses and for Wilson valence quarks at six different values for $κ$, 0.1320, 0.1410, 0.1525, 0.1565, 0.1585, and 0.1600. In addition to the measurements performed in our earlier work, we also measured the $Δ$ and other `extended' hadrons for staggered valence quarks and pseudo-scalar decay constants and vector meson matrix elements, the wave function at the origin, for Wilson valence quarks.
