Attenuation of VHE gamma rays by the Milky Way interstellar radiation field

The attenuation of very high energy gamma rays by pair production on the Galactic interstellar radiation field has long been thought of as negligible. However, a new calculation of the interstellar radiation field consistent with multi-wavelength observations by DIRBE and FIRAS indicates that the energy density of the Galactic interstellar radiation field is higher, particularly in the Galactic center, than previously thought. We have made a calculation of the attenuation of very high energy gamma rays in the Galaxy using this new interstellar radiation field which takes into account its nonuniform spatial and angular distributions. We find that the maximum attenuation occurs around 100 TeV at the level of about 25% for sources located at the Galactic center, and is important for both Galactic and extragalactic sources.

The Offline Software Framework of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to unveil the nature and the origins of the highest energy cosmic rays. The large and geographically dispersed collaboration of physicists and the wide-ranging collection of simulation and reconstruction tasks pose some special challenges for the offline analysis software. We have designed and implemented a general purpose framework which allows collaborators to contribute algorithms and sequencing instructions to build up the variety of applications they require. The framework includes machinery to manage these user codes, to organize the abundance of user-contributed configuration files, to facilitate multi-format file handling, and to provide access to event and time-dependent detector information which can reside in various data sources. A number of utilities are also provided, including a novel geometry package which allows manipulation of abstract geometrical objects independent of coordinate system choice. The framework is implemented in C++, and takes advantage of object oriented design and common open source tools, while keeping the user side simple enough for C++ novices to learn in a reasonable time. The distribution system incorporates unit and acceptance testing in order to support rapid development of both the core framework and contributed user code.

A new estimate of the Galactic interstellar radiation field between 0.1 microns and 1000 microns

Cosmic-ray electrons and positrons propagating in the Galaxy produce diffuse gamma-rays via the inverse Compton (IC) process. The low energy target photon populations with which the cosmic-rays interact during propagation are produced by stars, this stellar light being reprocessed by Galactic dust. Detailed modelling of the Galactic stellar distribution, dust distribution, and treatment of the absorption and scattering of light is therefore required to obtain accurate models for the low energy Galactic photon distribution and spectrum. Using a realistic Galactic stellar distribution model, and dust distribution, we calculate the diffuse radiation field from stars in the Galaxy (the `optical' radiation field), including absorption and scattering. Using a dust heating code, we self-consistently calculate the infra-red radiation field for the same dust model used for the optical calculation; both transient and equilibrium heating are included. We present the calculated radiation field spectra and distributions, and will use these to calculate the expected Galactic diffuse IC gamma-ray spectrum.

Photodisintegration of cosmic ray nuclei in galaxies and galaxy cluster radiation fields

We present the results of a new calculation for the photodisintegration of ultra-high energy cosmic ray nuclei on soft photon targets. We include all the relevant photodisintegraton processes i.e giant dipole resonance, quasi-deuteron, baryonic resonances and photofragmentation. In particular, for the giant dipole process we use a recent calculation of the giant dipole cross section. We calculate the mean free path for photodisintegration processes for radiation fields that are likely to exist within galaxies and clusters of galaxies.

Cosmic ray electrons and the diffuse gamma ray spectrum

The bulk of the diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission above a few tens of GeV has been conventionally ascribed to the decay of neutral pions produced in cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. Cosmic-ray electrons may, however, make a significant contribution to the gamma-ray spectrum at high energies, and even dominate at TeV-PeV energies depending on their injection spectral index and acceleration cut-off energy. If the injection spectrum is flat, the highest energy electrons will also contribute a diffuse hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray flux via synchrotron emission, and this may offer an explanation for the OSSE observation of a steep spectrum below a few MeV from the inner Galaxy. We perform a propagation calculation for cosmic-ray electrons, and use the resulting interstellar electron spectrum to obtain the gamma-ray spectrum due to inverse Compton, synchrotron and bremsstrahlung interactions consistently from MeV to PeV energies. We compare our results with available observations from satellite-borne telescopes, optical Cherenkov telescopes and air shower arrays and place constraints on the injection spectrum of cosmic-ray electrons. With future observations at TeV-PeV energies it should be possible to determine the average interstellar spectrum of cosmic-ray electrons, and hence estimate their spectrum on acceleration.
