Scalable on-chip integration of diamond color centers for cryogenic quantum photonics

Chip integration of quantum emitters is a crucial milestone for scalable quantum photonic information processing. Among optically active defect centers for quantum photonics, diamond color centers are promising because of their long spin coherence times and high photon emission rates. However, for a coherent-photon emission, they typically require a cryogenic environment to protect optical coherence from thermal phonons, which makes chip integration challenging. In this paper, we develop a chip-integrated diamond photonic crystal cavity embedding an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. We confirm cryogenic operation by observing Purcell enhancement of NV-center emission via an edge-coupled optical fiber. This result demonstrates successful integration of diamond color centers, a photonic crystal cavity, and an optical waveguide-fiber package, representing a key step toward scalable diamond-based quantum communication platforms.

Observation of the $\pi^2\sigma^2$-bond linear-chain molecular structure in $^{16}$C

Measurements of the $^2$H($^{16}$C,$^{16}$C$^{*}$$\rightarrow^4$He+$^{12}$Be or $^6$He+$^{10}$Be)$^2$H inelastic excitation and cluster-decay reactions have been carried out at a beam energy of about 23.5 MeV/u. A specially designed detection system, including one multi-layer silicon-strip telescope at around zero degrees, has allowed the high-efficiency three-fold coincident detection and therefore the event-by-event determination of the energy of the unstable nucleus beam. The decay paths from the $^{16}$C resonances to various states of the final $^{10}$Be or $^{12}$Be nucleus are recognized thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra. The reconstructed resonances at 16.5(1), 17.3(2), 19.4(1) and 21.6(2) MeV are assigned as the $0^+$, $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ members, respectively, of the positive-parity $(3/2_\pi^-)^2(1/2_\sigma^-)^2$-bond linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C, based on the angular correlation analysis for the 16.5 MeV state and the excellent agreement of decay patterns between the measurements and theoretical predictions. Moreover, another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2(1) MeV which decays almost exclusively to the $\sim$6 MeV states of $^{10}$Be, in line with the newly predicted pure $\sigma$-bond linear-chain configuration.

Description of isospin mixing by a generator coordinate method

Background: The isospin mixing is an interesting feature of atomic nuclei. It plays a crucial role in astrophysical nuclear reactions. However, it is not straightforward for variational nuclear structure models to describe it. Purpose: We propose a tractable method to describe the isospin mixing within a framework of the generator coordinate method and demonstrate its usability. Method: We generate the basis wave functions by applying the Fermi transition operator to the wave functions of isobars. The superposition of these basis wave functions and variationally obtained wave functions quantitatively describes the isospin mixing. Results: Using 14N as an example, we demonstrate that our method reasonably describes both T = 0 and 1 states and their mixing. Energy spectrum and E1 transition strengths are compared with the experimental data to confirm isospin mixing. Conclusion: The proposed method is effective enough to describe isospin mixing and is useful, for example, when we discuss {\alpha} capture reactions of N = Z nuclei.

Monopole and dipole transitions of the cluster states of 18O

On the basis of an extended antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculation, we study the cluster structure and the of the 0+ and 1- states of 18O. We discuss that several different kinds of cluster states appear in the excitation spectrum, and their monopole and dipole transitions are interesting fingerprints of unique cluster structure. We show that the monopole/dipole transitions are enhanced for the 14C+alpha cluster states, while they are hindered for the molecular-orbit state. We also point out that the ratio of the electric and isoscalar monopole transition strengths gives a good hint for the structure of the excited states.

Positive-parity linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C

An inelastic excitation and cluster-decay experiment $\rm {^2H}(^{16}C,~{^{4}He}+{^{12}Be}~or~{^{6}He}+{^{10}Be}){^2H}$ was carried out to investigate the linear-chain clustering structure in neutron-rich $\rm {^{16}C}$. For the first time, decay-paths from the $\rm {^{16}C}$ resonances to various states of the final nuclei were determined, thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra obtained from the three-fold coincident measurement. The close-threshold resonance at 16.5 MeV is assigned as the ${J^\pi}={0^+}$ band head of the predicted positive-parity linear-chain molecular band with ${(3/2_\pi^-)^2}{(1/2_\sigma^-)^2}$ configuration, according to the associated angular correlation and decay analysis. Other members of this band were found at 17.3, 19.4, and 21.6 MeV based on their selective decay properties, being consistent with the theoretical predictions. Another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2 MeV which decays almost exclusively to $\rm {^{6}He}+{^{10}Be{(\sim6~ MeV)}}$ final channel, corresponding well to another predicted linear-chain structure with the pure $\sigma$-bond configuration.

Performance test of the MAIKo active target

A new active target named MAIKo (Mu-PIC based Active target for Inverse Kinematics$_{\circ}$) has been developed at Kyoto University and Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. MAIKo is suited for missing-mass spectroscopy of unstable nuclei at forward scattering angles in inverse kinematics. MAIKo consists of a time projection chamber (TPC), which incorporates a micro-pixel chamber ($\mu$-PIC) as the electron multiplication and collection system. In MAIKo, the medium gas also plays the role of a reaction target, thus allowing detection of low-energy recoil particles with high position resolution. The MAIKo TPC was commissioned with He(93%)+iso-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$(7%) and He(93%)+CO$_{2}$(7%) mixture gasses at 430 hPa. The gas gain and the angular resolution of MAIKo were evaluated with an alpha source and a $^{4}$He beam at 56 MeV. The TPC was stably operated up to 1000-kcps beam intensity. A tracking algorithm using the Hough transform method has been developed to analyze scattering events. An angular resolution of 1.3$^{\circ}$ was achieved for scattered $^{4}$He particles.

Structure and decay pattern of linear-chain state in 14C

The linear-chain states of $^{14}$C are theoretically investigated by using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The calculated excitation energies and the $\alpha$ decay widths of the linear-chain states were compared with the observed data reported by the recent experiments. The properties of the positive-parity linear-chain states reasonably agree with the observation, that convinces us of the linear-chain formation in the positive-parity states. On the other hand, in the negative-parity states, it is found that the linear-chain configuration is fragmented into many states and do not form a single rotational band. As a further evidence of the linear-chain formation, we focus on the $\alpha$ decay pattern. It is shown that the linear-chain states decay to the excited states of daughter nucleus $^{10}{\rm Be}$ as well as to the ground state, while other cluster states dominantly decay into the ground state. Hence, we regard that this characteristic decay pattern is a strong signature of the linear-chain formation.

On-chip quantum feedback control of a superconducting qubit

Quantum feedback is a technique for measuring a qubit and applying appropriate feedback depending on the measurement results. Here, we propose a new on-chip quantum feedback method where the measurement-result information is not taken from the chip to the outside of a dilution refrigerator. This can be done by using a selective qubit-energy shift induced by measurement apparatus. We demonstrate on-chip quantum feedback and succeed in the rapid initialization of a qubit by flipping the qubit state only when we detect the ground state of the qubit. The feedback loop of our quantum feedback method closed on a chip, and so the operating time needed to control a qubit is of the order of 10 ns. This operating time is shorter than with the convectional off-chip feedback method. Our on-chip quantum feedback technique opens many possibilities such as an application to quantum information processing and providing an understanding of the foundation of thermodynamics for quantum systems.

3alpha clustering in the excited states of 16C

The alpha cluster states of 16C are investigated by using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. It is shown that two different types of alpha cluster states exist: triangular and linear-chain states. The former has an approximate isosceles triangular configuration of alpha particles surrounded by four valence neutrons occupying sd-shell, while the latter has the linearly aligned alpha particles with two sd-shell neutrons and two pf-shell neutrons. It is found that the structure of the linear-chain state is qualitatively understood in terms of the 3/2 pi- and 1/2 sigma- molecular orbit as predicted by molecular-orbital model, but there exists non-negligible Be+alpha+2n correlation. The band-head energies of the triangular and linear-chain rotational bands are 8.0 and 15.5 MeV, and the latter is close to the He+Be threshold energy. It is also shown that the linear-chain state becomes the yrast sstate at J=10 with excitation energy 27.8 MeV owing to its very large moment-of-inertia comparable with hyperdeformation.

Evidence for Oxygen Holes due to d-p Rehybridization in Thermoelectric Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}

Soft-x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopies are employed to investigate the electronic structures of Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}. Similarly to the layered cobaltates such as Na_{1-x}CoO_{2}, a valence-band satellite feature (VBS) occurs at higher binding energy to the O 2p band. We find that the VBS resonates at the O 1s edge. Additionally, core absorption shows clear x dependence in the O 1s edge rather than in the Rh 3p edge. These results indicate that the holes in the initial state mainly have O 2p character presumably due to d-p rehybridizations affected by Sr^{2+} vacancy potentials. The resultant inhomogenous charge texture may have impact on the TE transport properties at low x.

Relation between Superconducting Gap Minima and Nesting Vector in YNi2B2C

We have performed ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe the large superconducting (SC) gap anisotropy (GA) of YNi2B2C. The result shows large SC GA with a smooth variation along an intersection of a Fermi surface (FS) around the $Γ$-Z line and nearly isotropic SC gap values for two intersections of FSs around the X-P line but with a point-like non-zero minimum only for one sheet. The point-like SC gap minimum can be connected by the nesting vector reported from band calculations. The results show unexpectedly complicated SC GA of borocarbide superconductors.

Bulk electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic superconducting phase in ErNi2B2C

We have performed temperature (T) - dependent laser-photoemission spectroscopy of antiferromagnetic (AF) superconductor ErNi2B2C to study the electronic-structure evolution reflecting the interplay between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The spectra at the superconducting (SC) phase show a very broad spectral shape. T-dependent SC gap shows a sudden deviation from the BCS prediction just below TN. This observation can be well explained by the theoretical model and thus represents characteristic bulk electronic structure of the AF SC phase for the first time.

Measurements of Thermophysical Property of Thin Films by Light Pulse Heating Thermoreflectance Methods

Thermoreflectance methods by picosecond pulse heating and by nanosecond pulse heating have been developed under the same geometrical configuration as the laser flash method by the National Metrology Institute of JAPAN, AIST. Using these light pulse heating methods, thermal diffusivity of each layer of multilayered thin films and boundary thermal resistance between the layers can be determined from the observed transient temperature curves based on the response function method. The measurement results of various thin films as transparent conductive films used for flat panel displays, hard coating films and multilayered films of the next generation phase-change optical disk will be presented.

The origin of the anomalously strong influence of out-of-plane disorder on high-Tc superconductivity

The electronic structure of Bi2Sr2-xRxCuOy(R=La, Eu) near the (pi,0) point of the first Brillouin zone was studied by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The temperature T* above which the pseudogap structure in the ARPES spectrum disappears was found to have an R dependence that is opposite to that ofthe superconducting transition temperature Tc. This indicates that the pseudogap state is competing with high-Tc superconductivity, and the large Tc suppression observed with increasing the out-of-plane disorder is due to the stabilization of the pseudogap state.

Simultaneous measurement of the photodisintegration of 4He in the giant dipole resonance region

We have performed for the first time the simultaneous measurement of the two-body and three-body photodisintegration cross-sections of 4He in the energy range from 21.8 to 29.8 MeV using monoenergetic pulsed photons and a 4-pi time projection chamber containing 4He gas as an active target in an event-by-event mode. The photon beam was produced via the Compton backscattering of laser photons with high-energy electrons. The 4He(gamma,p)3H and 4He(gamma,n)3He cross sections were found to increase monotonically with energy up to 29.8 MeV, in contrast to the result of a recent theoretical calculation based on the Lorentz integral transform method which predicted a pronounced peak at around 26-27 MeV. The energy dependence of the obtained 4He(gamma,n)3He cross section up to 26.5 MeV is marginally consistent with a Faddeev-type calculation predicting a flat pattern of the excitation function. The cross-section ratio of 4He(gamma,p)3H to 4He(gamma,n)3He is found to be consistent with the expected value for charge symmetry of the strong interaction within the experimental uncertainty in the measured energy range. The present results for the total and two-body cross-sections of the photodisintegration of 4He are compared to previous experimental data and recent theoretical calculations.
