Euclid. I. Overview of the Euclid mission

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We also highlight the main science objectives and expected performance.

Prospects for Fundamental Physics with LISA

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Gamma-Ray Bursts and Dark Energy - Dark Matter interaction

In this work Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) data is used to place constraints on a putative coupling between dark energy and dark matter. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) constraints from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey II (SDSS-II) first-year results, the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) shift parameter from WMAP seven year results and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are also discussed. The prospects for the field are assessed, as more GRB events become available.

Moduli evolution in the presence of thermal corrections

We study the effect of thermal corrections on the evolution of moduli in effective Supergravity models. This is motivated by previous results in the literature suggesting that these corrections could alter and, even, erase the presence of a minimum in the zero temperature potential, something that would have disastrous consequences in these particular models. We show that, in a representative sample of flux compactification constructions, this need not be the case, although we find that the inclusion of thermal corrections can dramatically decrease the region of initial conditions for which the moduli are stabilised. Moreover, the bounds on the reheating temperature coming from demanding that the full, finite temperature potential, has a minimum can be considerably relaxed given the slow pace at which the evolution proceeds.

WMAP5 constraints on the unified model of dark energy and dark matter

We derive constraints on the parameter space of the unified model of dark energy and dark matter, the Generalized Chaplygin Gas (GCG), from the amplitudes and positions of the first few peaks and first trough of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) power spectrum, using the latest WMAP five year data.

Moduli evolution in the presence of flux compactifications

We study the cosmological evolution of the volume moduli in a class of recently proposed Inflationary Universe models arising out of Type IIB string theory, where a number of the moduli fields have been stabilised through flux compactifications. Developing an approach initially introduced in [3] we show, in agreement with [4], how the presence of extra sources of matter act so as to provide additional friction, slowing the modulus field as it evolves down its potential, thereby vastly increasing the region of parameter space which leads to the eventual stabilisation of these fields. Extending the case to include both the real and imaginary parts of the volume modulus, we show how the parameter space of inital conditions is modified and comment on the impact for these inflationary models arising out of flux type compactifications.

Generalized Chaplygin Gas in a modified gravity approach

We study the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) scenario in a modified gravity approach. That is, we impose that our universe has a pure dust configuration, and allow for a modification of gravity that yields a GCG specific scale factor evolution. Moreover, assuming that this new hypothetical gravity theory obeys a generalization of Birkhoff's law, we determine the Schwarzschild-like metric in this new modified gravity. We also study the large scale structure formation in this model. Both the linear and non-linear growth are studied together with the growth of the velocity fluctuation in the linear perturbation theory. We compare our results with those corresponding to the $Λ$CDM model and discuss possible distinguishable features.

WMAP Constraints on a Quintessence Model

We use the results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) for the locations of peaks and troughs of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum, together with constraints from large-scale structure, to study a quintessence model in which the pure exponential potential is modified by a polynomial factor. Our analysis, in the $(Ω_m, h, n_s)$ cosmological parameters space shows that this quintessence model is favoured compared to $Λ$CDM for $n_s\approx 1$ and relatively high values of early quintessence; for $n_s<1$, quintessence and $Λ$CDM give similar results, except for high values of early quintessence, in which case $Λ$CDM is favoured.

WMAP Constraints on Quintessence

We use recent results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) for the locations of peaks and troughs of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum, together with constraints from large-scale structure, to study a quintessence model in which the pure exponential potential is modified by a polynomial factor. We find that the model is compatible with all the recent data for a wide range of cosmological and potential parameters. Moreover, quintessence is favoured compared to $Λ$CDM for $n_s\approx 1$ and relatively high values of the average fraction of dark energy before last scattering (``early quintessence''); for $n_s<1$, quintessence and $Λ$CDM give similar results, except for high values of early quintessence, in which case $Λ$CDM is favoured.

Moduli Evolution in Heterotic Scenarios

We discuss several aspects of the cosmological evolution of moduli fields in heterotic string/M-theory scenarios. In particular we study the equations of motion of both the dilaton and overall modulus of these theories in the presence of an expanding Universe and under different assumptions. First we analyse the impact of their couplings to matter fields, which turns out to be negligible in the string and M-theory scenarios. Then we examine in detail the possibility of scaling in M-theory, i.e. how the moduli would evolve naturally to their minima instead of rolling past them in the presence of a dominating background. In this case we find interesting and positive results, and we compare them to the analogous situation in the heterotic string.

Quintessence arising from exponential potentials

We demonstrate how exponential potentials that could arise in the early Universe as a result of Kaluza-Klein type compactifications of string theory, can lead to cosmological solutions which correspond to the currently observed accelerating Universe. The idea is simple, relying solely on the known scaling properties associated with exponential potentials. In particular we show that the existence of stable attractor solutions implies that the results hold for a wide range of coupling constants and initial conditions.

Moduli as Inflatons in Heterotic M-theory

We consider different cosmological aspects of Heterotic M-theory. In particular we look at the dynamical behaviour of the two relevant moduli in the theory, namely the length of the eleventh segment (pi rho) and the volume of the internal six manifold (V) in models where supersymmetry is broken by multiple gaugino condensation. We look at different ways to stabilise these moduli, namely racetrack scenarios with or without non-perturbative corrections to the Kahler potential. The existence of different flat directions in the scalar potential, and the way in which they can be partially lifted, is discussed as well as their possible role in constructing a viable model of inflation. Some other implications such as the status of the moduli problem within these models are also studied.

Cosmological Aspects of Heterotic M-theory

In this talk we discuss a few relevant aspects of heterotic M-theory. These are the stabilization of the two relevant moduli (the length of the eleventh segment (pi rho) and the volume of the internal six manifold (V)) in models where supersymmetry is broken by multiple gaugino condensation and non-perturbative corrections to the Kahler potential; the existence of almost flat directions in the scalar potential; the possibility of lifting them, and their role in constructing a viable model of inflation. Finally, we review the status of the moduli problem within these models. T

Anomalous U(1), gaugino condensation and supergravity

The interplay between gaugino condensation and an anomalous Fayet-Iliopoulos term in string theories is not trivial and has important consequences concerning the size and type of the soft SUSY breaking terms. In this paper we examine this issue, generalizing previous work to the supergravity context. This allows, in particular, to properly implement the cancellation of the cosmological constant, which is crucial for a correct treatment of the soft breaking terms. We obtain that the D-term contribution to the soft masses is expected to be larger than the F-term one. Moreover gaugino masses must be much smaller than scalar masses. We illustrate these results with explicit examples. All this has relevant phenomenological consequences, amending previous results in the literature.

Stabilizing the Dilaton in Superstring Cosmology

We address the important issue of stabilizing the dilaton in the context of superstring cosmology. Scalar potentials which arise out of gaugino condensates in string models are generally exponential in nature. In a cosmological setting this allows for the existence of quasi scaling solutions, in which the energy density of the scalar field can, for a period, become a fixed fraction of the background density, due to the friction of the background expansion. Eventually the field can be trapped in the minimum of its potential as it leaves the scaling regime. We investigate this possibility in various gaugino condensation models and show that stable solutions for the dilaton are far more common than one would have naively thought.

On non-perturbative corrections to the Kahler potential

We present the results of a detailed investigation into the consequences of adding specific string motivated non-perturbative corrections to the usual tree level Kahler potential in dilaton dominated scenarios. The success of the model is judged through our ability to obtain a realistic VEV for the dilaton < Re S > ~ 2, corresponding to the true minima of the scalar potential and being associated with a reasonable value for the SUSY breaking scale via the gravitino mass. The status of the so-called moduli problem is also reviewed in each of the ansatze studied. Those include previous proposals made in the context of both the chiral and the linear multiplet formalisms to describe gaugino condensation, and a new ansatz which shows explicitly the equivalence between the two.
