Alignment and preliminary outcomes of an ELT-size instrument to a very large telescope: LINC-NIRVANA at LBT

LINC-NIRVANA (LN) is a high resolution, near infrared imager that uses a multiple field-of-view, layer-oriented, multi-conjugate AO system, consisting of four multi-pyramid wavefront sensors (two for each arm of the Large Binocular Telescope, each conjugated to a different altitude). The system employs up to 40 star probes, looking at up to 20 natural guide stars simultaneously. Its final goal is to perform Fizeau interferometric imaging, thereby achieving ELT-like spatial resolution (22.8 m baseline resolution). For this reason, LN is also equipped with a fringe tracker, a beam combiner and a NIR science camera, for a total of more than 250 optical components and an overall size of approximately 6x4x4.5 meters. This paper describes the tradeoffs evaluated in order to achieve the alignment of the system to the telescope. We note that LN is comparable in size to planned ELT instrumentation. The impact of such alignment strategies will be compared and the selected procedure, where the LBT telescope is, in fact, aligned to the instrument, will be described. Furthermore, results coming from early night-time commissioning of the system will be presented.

Simultaneous NIR/sub-mm observation of flare emission from SgrA*

We report on a successful, simultaneous observation and modeling of the sub-millimeter to near-infrared flare emission of the Sgr A* counterpart associated with the super-massive black hole at the Galactic center. Our modeling is based on simultaneous observations that have been carried out on 03 June, 2008 using the NACO adaptive optics (AO) instrument at the ESO VLT and the LABOCA bolometer at the APEX telescope. Inspection and modeling of the light curves show that the sub-mm follows the NIR emission with a delay of 1.5+/-0.5 hours. We explain the flare emission delay by an adiabatic expansion of the source components.

Coordinated multi-wavelength observations of Sgr A*

We report on recent near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the electromagnetic manifestation of the ~4x10^6 solar masses super-massive black hole (SMBH) at the Galactic Center. The goal of these coordinated multi-wavelength observations is to investigate the variable emission from Sgr A* in order to obtain a better understanding of the underlying physical processes in the accretion flow/outflow. The observations have been carried out using the NACO adaptive optics (AO) instrument at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (July 2005, May 2007) and the ACIS-I instrument aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory (July 2005). We report on a polarized NIR flare synchronous to a 8x1033 erg/s X-ray flare in July 2005, and a further flare in May 2007 that shows the highest sub-flare to flare contrast observed until now. The observations can be interpreted in the framework of a model involving a temporary disk with a short jet. In the disk component flux density variations can be explained due to hot spots on relativistic orbits around the central SMBH. The variations of the sub-structures of the May 2007 flare are interpreted as a variation of the hot spot structure due to differential rotation within the disk.

Coordinated mm/sub-mm observations of Sagittarius A* in May 2007

At the center of the Milky Way, with a distance of ~8 kpc, the compact source Sagittarius A* (SgrA*) can be associated with a super massive black hole of ~4x10^6 solar masses. SgrA* shows strong variability from the radio to the X-ray wavelength domains. Here we report on simultaneous NIR/sub-millimeter/X-ray observations from May 2007 that involved the NACO adaptive optics (AO) instrument at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the US mm-array CARMA, the IRAM 30m mm-telescope, and other telescopes. We concentrate on the time series of mm/sub-mm data from CARMA, ATCA, and the MAMBO bolometer at the IRAM 30m telescope.

Molecular gas in nearby low-luminosity QSO host galaxies

This paper addresses the global molecular gas properties of a representative sample of galaxies hosting low-luminosity quasistellar objects. An abundant supply of gas is necessary to fuel both the active galactic nucleus and any circum-nuclear starburst activity of QSOs. We selected a sample of nearby low-luminosity QSO host galaxies that is free of infrared excess biases. All objects are drawn from the Hamburg-ESO survey for bright UV-excess QSOs, have DEC>-30 degrees and redshifts that do not exceed z=0.06. The IRAM 30m telescope was used to measure the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) transition in parallel. 27 out of 39 galaxies in the sample have been detected. The molecular gas masses of the detected sources range from 0.4E9 M_sun to 9.7E9 M_sun. We can confirm that the majority of galaxies hosting low-luminosity QSOs are rich in molecular gas. The properties of galaxies hosting brighter type I AGN and circumnuclear starformation regions differ from the properties of galaxies with fainter central regions. The overall supply of molecular gas and the spread of the line width distribution is larger. When comparing the far-infrared with the CO luminosities, the distribution can be separated into two different power-laws: one describing the lower activity Seyfert I population and the second describing the luminous QSO population. The separation in the L_FIR/L'_CO behavior may be explainable with differing degrees of compactness of the emission regions. We provide a simple model to describe the two power-laws. The sample studied in this paper is located in a transition region between the two populations.

Mrk 609: resolving the circum-nuclear structure with near-infrared integral field spectroscopy

We present first results of near infrared J and H+K ESO-SINFONI integral field spectroscopy of the composite starburst/Seyfert 1.8 galaxy Mrk 609. The data were taken during the science verification period of SINFONI. We aim to investigate the morphology and excitation conditions within the central 2 kpc. Additional Nobeyama 45 m CO(1-0) data are presented, which we used to estimate the molecular gas mass. The source was selected from a sample of adaptive optics suitable, SDSS/ROSAT based, X-ray bright AGN with redshifts of 0.03 < z < 1. This sample allows for a detailed study of the NIR properties of the nuclear and host environments with high spectral and spatial resolution. Our NIR data reveal a complex emission-line morphology, possibly associated with a nuclear bar seen in the reconstructed continuum images. The detections of [SiVI] and a broad Pa alpha component are clear indicators for the presence of an accreting super-massive black hole at the center of Mrk 609. In agreement with previous observations we find that the circum-nuclear emission is not significantly extincted. The analysis of the high angular resolution rotational-vibrational molecular hydrogen and forbidden [FeII] emission reveals a LINER character of the nucleus. The large H_2 gas mass deduced from the CO(1-0) observation provides the fuel needed to feed the starburst and Seyfert activity in Mrk 609. High angular resolution imaging spectroscopy provides an ideal tool to resolve the nuclear and starburst contribution in active galaxies. We show that Mrk 609 exhibits LINER features, that appear to be hidden in larger aperture visible/NIR spectra.

Barred CO emission in HE1029-1831

We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) line emission maps of the barred spiral active galaxy HE1029-1831 (z=0.0403) obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) and in part by the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) observatory. The CO emission is well associated with the optical bar and extended along it. The FWHM of the CO emission is estimated to be ~(6+-2)kpc. The CO emission shows a strong velocity gradient along the minor axis of the bar (PA=90degree). The molecular gas mass is estimated to be ~1.2x10^(10)Msun which indicates a very gas rich host galaxy. Most of the molecular gas appears to be subthermally excited and cold but we also find weak evidence for a warmer and/or denser gas component at the southern part of the bar emission, about \~4kpc from the galactic nucleus.

Nearby AGN and their hosts in the near infrared

We present near infrared ISAAC VLT observations of nine (0.01<z<0.06) Active Galactic Nuclei selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey and the Veron-Cetty & Veron catalog. Hydrogen recombination lines Pa$α$ and Br$γ$ are observed in seven of the nine sources of which five show a broad component. In three sources, extended 1-0S(1) rotational-vibrational molecular hydrogen emission is detected. Stellar CO absorption is seen in four sources. In one of these objects, an upper limit of the central mass can be determined from the stellar velocity field. H- and Ks-band imaging allow us to determine the morphology class of the host galaxies. Colors (with supplementary J-band 2MASS images) show that the four galaxies with detected CO absorption are characterized by an overall strong stellar contribution. One galaxy shows an increased extinction towards the nucleus. After removal of the nuclear point source, the host galaxies show colors typical for non-active spiral galaxies.

Molecular gas in QSO host galaxies

We present the results of a survey for CO line emission from a sample of nearby QSO hosts taken from the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES) and the Veron-Cetty and Veron quasar catalogue. From a total of 39 observed sources we clearly detected 5 objects with >10sigma signals (HE 0108-4743, HE 0224-2834, J035818.7-612407, HE 1029-1831, HE 2211-3903). Further 6 sources show marginal detections on the 2sigma level.

NIR Imaging and Spectroscopy of AGN hosts at z < 0.06

We created a sample of nearby QSOs selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey and the Veron-Cetty & Veron catalog, with a limiting redshift of z<0.06, which consists of 63 objects. In this contribution, we present the results of our ISAAC Ks-band spectroscopic and H and Ks-band photometric observations of 9 sources of this sample. In seven sources we find hydrogen recombination lines Paalpha and Brgamma of which five galaxies show a broad component. In three sources, extended molecular hydrogen emission is detected in the 1-0S(1) line. The stellar CO-absorption feature is only detectable in 5 objects, those sources with J-H and H-K colors closest to those of ordinary galaxies.

Molecular gas in the galaxy cluster Abell 262. CO observations of UGC 1347 and other galaxies of the cluster

We present millimeter CO line emission observations of 12 galaxies within the Abell 262 cluster, together with L_FIR data, in the context of a possible molecular gas deficiency within the region of the cluster center. Several indications of the presence of such a deficiency are highlighted and connected to a model of cirrus-like cloud stripping. The model predicts a drop in the average 100 micron flux density of galaxies in the core of the cluster compared to the average 100 micron flux density in the outer regions, which is actually indicated in the IRAS data of the cluster members. This drop is explained by the decrease in the total hydrogen column density N(H) and, therefore, also includes a decrease in the molecular gas content. In addition to results for the global CO content of the galaxy sample, high-resolution interferometric CO(1-0) observations of one of the cluster members, UGC 1347, exemplify the spatial distribution of the molecular gas in a galaxy of the cluster. With these observations, it was possible to confirm the existence of a bright off-nuclear CO-emission source and to derive molecular masses and line ratios for this source and the nucleus.

Selection of extragalactic Targets for AO and VLTI Observations

In this contribution we would like to emphasize the usefulness of data mining multiwavelength surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) or the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) -- which have become available to the public recently -- in order to find interesting objects suitable for adaptive optics (AO) or interferometric (VLTI) observations in the infrared. We will present a sample of extragalactic X-ray sources having an optical counterpart (based on SDSS data release 1) which are suitable for AO/VLTI observations using a natural guide star in their vicinity.
