Low lying excitations in $^{150}$Pm

The low lying excitations in odd-odd $^{150}$Pm have been studied through proton induced reaction with an array of five Compton suppressed Clover HPGe and one segmented planar Ge detectors. The relative excitation functions for the observed $\gamma$ rays have been studied using singles data at two beam energies of 8~MeV and 9~MeV. 16 new $\gamma$ rays and 15 new levels have been placed in the level scheme of $^{150}$Pm based on $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidence data. The relative intensities for the observed $\gamma$ rays have been determined using total and gated projections. Tentative spin-parity assignments were made to few low lying excitations of $^{150}$Pm, using limited angular distribution data and other information. Lifetimes were estimated for two excited levels in this nucleus using using generalized centroid difference analysis, applied in the nanosecond range, with Ge detectors. Large basis shell model and projected shell model calculation were performed to interpret the experimentally observed levels. The present work indicates 1$^-$ ground state, a 2$^-$ state close to the ground state ($\sim$50~keV) and a low lying 6$^-$ isomeric state in this odd-odd nucleus along with emerging band structures developed with two quasiparticle configurations.

Evidence of the Excited X(5)-like Critical-Point Symmetry Structures in 152Sm

The positive-parity structure of 152Sm has been investigated through high-statistics {\gamma}-ray spectroscopy following the (150Nd({\alpha},2n)152Sm reaction at Elab = 26 MeV. Several collective structures built on excited 0+ states have been extended through the observation of new levels and {\gamma}-ray transitions, and spin-parity assignments have been established using directional-correlation and linear-polarization measurements. Electromagnetic transition strengths (B(E2)), deduced from measured branching ratios and known level lifetimes, reveal pronounced collectivity among the excited configurations. The resulting level scheme provides evidence for a sequence of excited collective bands extending beyond the well-known ground-state and first excited 0+ structures. The excitation energies and transition strengths are examined within the framework of the X(5) critical-point description of the first-order U(5)-SU(3) shape-phase transition. In addition to the established X(5)-like features of the low-lying spectrum, the observed systematics of the higher-lying bands are found to be consistent with excited collective structures exhibiting X(5)-like characteristics. The results provide new constraints on the realization of critical-point behavior in finite nuclei and on the evolution of collectivity in the N=90 region.

Hindered $\Delta K=1$ Dipole Strength in octupole bands in $N=90$ $^{154}$Gd from Lifetime Measurements with $\gamma-\gamma$ fast timing technique

The lifetimes of the low-lying negative-parity $1^-$ state at 1414~keV and $2^-$ state at 1398~keV in $^{154}$Gd have been measured using the $\gamma$--$\gamma$ fast-timing technique with the VENTURE array at VECC, Kolkata. The states were populated through the $\beta$ decay of $^{154}$Tb, produced in proton-induced reactions at the K130 cyclotron. From the measured lifetimes, absolute $B(E1)$ transition strengths were deduced. The extracted $B(E1)$ values are compared with those of neighboring Gd isotopes and with Gogny-HFB-based $sdf$-IBM calculations. The results show that the measured $E1$ strengths from these states are strongly hindered compared with the corresponding $\Delta K=0$ transitions, providing evidence for weak $\Delta K=1$ dipole strength in $^{154}$Gd.

Lifetimes and Transition Probabilities in $N = 76 ^{130}Xe$

Lifetimes for the ${4}_1^+$ and ${6}_1^+$ states have been directly measured using $\gamma-\gamma$ fast timing technique for low lying states of $^{130}Xe$, populated from $\beta ^-$ decay of the parent $^{130}I$ produced through $^{nat}U(\alpha,f)$ reaction at $E_{\alpha}~=~40~MeV$. VENTURE array comprising of eight fast CeBr$_3$ detectors is used for lifetime measurement. The reduced transition probabilities deduced from the measured lifetimes have been compared with theoretical values obtained from the large basis shell model calculation and the interacting boson approximation (IBM) calculation.

A New Evidence of Interplay Between Tetrahedral and Octahedral Symmetries and Symmetry Breaking: Exotic Rotational Bands in $^{152}$Sm

We report on an experimental evidence for a new, second tetrahedral band in $^{152}_{\;\;62}$Sm$^{}_{90}$. It was populated via fusion evaporation reaction, $^{150}{\rm Nd}(\alpha, 2n)^{152}$Sm, employing 26 MeV beam of $\alpha$ particles from K-130 cyclotron at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata, India. The newly observed possible mixed parity sequence with absence of E2 and strong indication of E3 transitions is consistent with the spectroscopic criteria for a tetrahedral-symmetry rotational band that could be constructed from the allowed spin-parity assignments. This structure differs from the structure of the band previously found in the same nucleus, the new one manifesting tetrahedral symmetry not accompanied by the octahedral one. Our new experimental results are interpreted in terms of group representation theory and collective nuclear-motion theory of Bohr. We propose to generalize the notion of the tetrahedral vibrational bands and believe that our new experimental results support a number of theory predictions related to nuclear tetrahedral symmetry published earlier and bring a new light into the issue of spontaneous symmetry breaking in heavy nuclei.

Study of radioactivity built-up and decay with singles time-stamped data

Time-stamped data have been used to estimate the decay half-lives of radioactive 118mSb and 64,66,68Ga nuclei. These nuclei are populated through the reaction 4He (Elab = 32 MeV) + nat In and p (Elab = 10 MeV) + natZn, respectively. The g -rays emitted by the excited daughter nuclei are detected by a single high purity germanium (HPGe) detector and the data are acquired using a CAEN 5780M desktop digitizer. Half-lives of different orders of magnitudes for the above mentioned nuclei are obtained from both the decay of parent and the growth of daughter nuclei. It is observed that the half-lives obtained from both these techniques match fairly well and also are consistent with the reported values. It is demonstrated that the time-stamped data can be useful while studying certain half-lives which are too long for measurement using in-beam electronic technique and too short for decay studies in off-beam methods. The data also have a special relevance for constant monitoring of beam current and beam-tuning.

Coupling between two extreme excitation mode in weakly deformed $^{142}$Eu nucleus

Two opposite parity dipole bandlike structures DB I and DB II of $^{142}$Eu are investigated by the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA), using the fusion evaporation reaction $^{31}$P + $^{116}$Cd @ 148 MeV. The decreasing trend as well as magnitude of the measured $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$ transition rates of the band DB II has been reproduced well within the shears mechanism with the principal axis cranking model calculations. This calculation reflects the fact that the maximum contribution of the angular momentum of the states in DB II has been generated from the magnetic rotation (MR) phenomenon. The enhanced $B(E1)$ rates of the connecting $E1$ transitions from the states of DB II to DB I are demanding the octupole correlation due to the involvement of the octupole driving pair of orbitals $π{h_{11/2}}$ and $π{d_{5/2}}$ as evident from the quasiparticle alignment ($i_{x}$), the experimental routhians (e$^{'}$) and the calculated neutron and proton quasiparticle energies against the rotational frequency ($ω$).

Spectroscopic Criteria for Identification of Nuclear Tetrahedral and Octahedral Symmetries: Illustration on a Rare Earth Nucleus

We formulate criteria for identification of the nuclear tetrahedral and octahedral symmetries and illustrate for the first time their possible realization in a Rare Earth nucleus 152Sm. We use realistic nuclear mean-field theory calculations with the phenomenological macroscopic-microscopic method, the Gogny-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach and the general point-group theory considerations to guide the experimental identification method as illustrated on published experimental data. Following group-theory the examined symmetries imply the existence of exotic rotational bands on whose properties the spectroscopic identification criteria are based. These bands may contain simultaneously states of even and odd spins, of both parities and parity doublets at well defined spins. In the exact-symmetry limit those bands involve no E2-transitions. We show that coexistence of tetrahedral and octahedral deformations is essential when calculating the corresponding energy minima and surrounding barriers and that it has a characteristic impact on the rotational bands. The symmetries in question imply the existence of long-lived shape-isomers and, possibly, new waiting point nuclei -- impacting the nucleosynthesis processes in astrophysics -- and an existence of 16-fold degenerate particle-hole excitations. Specifically designed experiments which aim at strengthening the identification arguments are briefly discussed.

Evidence of the Antimagnetic rotation in an odd-odd nucleus: The case of 142Eu

The present work reported a conclusive evidence for anti-magnetic rotational (AMR) band in an odd-odd nucleus 142Eu. Parity of the states of a quadrupole sequence in 142Eu was firmly identified from polarization measurements using the Indian National Gamma Array and lifetimes of some of the states in the same structure were measured using the Doppler shift attenuation method. The decreasing trends of the deduced quadrupole transition strength B(E2) with spin, along with increasing J(2) / B(E2) values conclusively established the origin of these states as arising from Antimagnetic rotation. The results were well reproduced by numerical calculations within the framework of a semi-classical geometric model.

Identification of a long lived $β$ decaying isomer in $^{150}$Pm

The decay of odd-odd $^{150}$Pm has been studied by populating the nucleus with the $^{150}$Nd(p,n)$^{150}$Pm reaction at E$_{beam}$ = 8.0 MeV using 97$\%$ enriched $^{150}$Nd target. The presence of an isomeric state with $β$ decay half life of 2.2(1) h could be identified in $^{150}$Pm by following the half lives of the observed $γ$ transitions. The decay of the isomer to the excited levels of $^{150}$Sm has been confirmed by observing the $γ- γ$ coincidence with the VENUS array of six Compton suppressed Clover HPGe detectors. The $β$ decay end-point energies corresponding to the decay from the $^{150g}$Pm and $^{150m}$Pm have been measured using a $β-γ$ coincidence setup of two thin window Planar HPGe detectors and four Clover HPGe detectors of the VENUS array. The systematics of the similar isomeric states in neighboring nuclei has been studied to understand the underlying structure of these states. Shell model calculation has been performed by using OXBASH code which indicates the presence of a 5$^-$ isomeric state at very low excitation in the nucleus. The calculation also suggests hindered electromagnetic decay of this isomer and supports the possibility of its $β$ decay to the excited levels of $^{150}$Sm.

Antimagnetic rotation and sudden change of electric quadrupole transition strength in 143Eu

Lifetimes of the states in the quadrupole structure in 143Eu have been measured using the Doppler shift attenuation method as well as parity of the states in the sequence has been firmly identified from polarization measurement using the Indian National Gamma Array. The decreasing trends of the deduced quadrupole transition strength B(E2) with spin, along with increasing J (2) /B(E2) values before band crossing, conclusively establish the origin of these states as arising out of antimagnetic rotation. The abrupt increase in the B(E2) values after the band crossing in the quadrupole band, a novel feature observed in the present experiment, may indicates the crossing of different shears configurations resulting in re-opening of shears structure. The results are well reproduced by numerical calculation within the framework of semi-classical geometric model.

Role of p-induced population of medium mass(A $\sim$ 150) neutron rich nuclei

Excitation functions were measured by stacked-foil activation technique for the $^{150}$Nd(p, xpyn) reaction using 97.65$%$ enriched $^{150}$Nd target. Measurement up to $\sim$50$%$ above barrier and down to 18$%$ below the barrier was performed using proton beam energy (E$_p$) of 7 - 15 MeV from VECC Cyclotron. The yield of suitable $γ$ rays emitted following the decay of relevant evaporation residues was determined using a 50$%$ High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector.(p,n) cross section was found to follow the expected trend with a maximum value of 63.7(4.9)mb at E$_p$ $\sim$ 8.6 MeV. (p,2n) cross section gradually increased with E$_p$ and had maximum contribution to the total reaction cross section after E$_p$ $\sim$ 9.0 MeV. (p, p$^{\prime}$n) reaction channel also showed a reasonable yield with a threshold of E$_p$ $\sim$ 12.0 MeV. The experimental data were corroborated with statistical model calculations using different codes, viz., CASCADE, ALICE/91 and EMPIRE3.1. All the calculations using a suitable set of global parameters could reproduce the excitation function fairly well in the present energy range.

Crossing of large multiquasiparticle magnetic-rotation bands in $^{198}$Bi

High-spin states in the doubly-odd $^{198}$Bi nucleus have been studied by using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{16}$O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. $γ-γ$ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

Measurement of $β$-decay end point energy with Planar HPGe detector

The end point energies of nuclear $β$ decays have been measured with a segmented planar Ge LEPS detector using both singles and coincidence techniques. The $β- γ$ coincidence has been performed with a segmented planar Ge LEPS and a single 10$\%$ HPGe detector. The $γ$ ray and $β$ particle responses of the Segmented planer Ge LEPS detector were studied using monte carlo simulation code GEANT3. The experimentally obtained $β$ spectrum was in reasonably good agreement with the simulation results. The experimental end point energies are determined with substantial accuracy for some of the known $β$ decays in $^{106}$Rh, $^{210}$Bi and $^{90}$Y. The end point energies corresponding to three weak branches in $^{106}$Rh $\rightarrow$ $^{106}$Pd decay has been measured for the first time.

Band structures and intruder $π$$i_{13/2}$ state in $^{197}$Tl

The excited states in the odd-$A$ $^{197}$Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the $^{197}$Au($α$, 4$n$)$^{197}$Tl reaction at the beam energy of 48 MeV. The $γ-γ$ coincidence data were taken using a combination of clover, LEPS and single crystal HPGe detectors. Precise spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been done through the polarization and the DCO measurements. A new band structure has been identified and the evidence for a possible intruder $πi_{13/2}$ state has been found for the first time. Possible configurations of the observed bands have been discussed. The total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to study the shape of $^{197}$Tl for different configurations.

Low lying spectroscopy of odd-odd $^{146}$Eu

Electron Capture (EC) decay of $^{146}$Gd($\it{t_{1/2}}$ = 48d) to the low lying states of $^{146}$Eu has been studied using high-resolution $γ$ ray spectroscopy. The $^{146}$Gd activity was produced by ($α$, 2n) reaction at E$_α$ = 32 MeV using 93.8% enriched $^{144}$Sm target. The level structure has been considerably modified from the measurement of $γ$ ray singles, $γγ$ coincidences and decay half lives. Lifetime measurement has been performed for the 3$^-$ (114.06 keV) and 2$^-$ (229.4 keV) levels of $^{146}$Eu using Mirror Symmetric Centroid Difference (MSCD) method with LaBr$_3$ (Ce) detectors. The lifetimes for these two states have been found to be 5.38 $\pm$ 2.36 ps and 8.38 $\pm$ 2.19 ps respectively. Shell model calculation has been performed using OXBASH code in order to interpret the results.

High spin band structures in doubly-odd $^{194}$Tl

The high-spin states in odd-odd $^{194}$Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{13}$C, xn) reactions at 75 MeV of beam energy. $γ-γ$ coincidence measurement has been performed using the INGA array with a digital data acquisition system to record the time stamped data. Definite spin-parity assignment of the levels was made from the DCO ratio and the IPDCO ratio measurements. The level scheme of $^{194}$Tl has been extended up to 4.1 MeV in excitation energy including 19 new gamma ray transitions. The $πh_{9/2} \otimes νi_{13/2}$ band, in the neighboring odd-odd Tl isotopes show very similar properties in both experimental observables and calculated shapes. Two new band structures, with 6-quasiparticle configuration, have been observed for the first time in $^{194}$Tl. One of these bands has the characteristics of a magnetic rotational band. The cranked shell model calculations, using a deformed Woods-Saxon potential, have been performed to obtain the total Routhian surfaces in order to study the shapes of the bands and the band crossing in $^{194}$Tl. The semiclassical formalism has been used to describe the magnetic rotational band.

Onset of deformation at $N = 112$ in Bi nuclei

The high spin states in $^{195}$Bi has been studied by $γ$-ray spectroscopic method using the $^{181}$Ta($^{20}$Ne, 6n) fusion evaporation reaction at 130 MeV. The $γγ$ coincidence data were taken using an array of 8 clover HPGe detectors. The spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been made from the measured directional correlation from oriented states (DCO) ratios and integrated polarization asymmetry (IPDCO) ratios. The results show, for the first time, the evidence of a rotational like band based on a 13/2$^+$ band head in this nucleus, indicating the onset of deformation at neutron number $N = 112$ for the Bismuth isotopes. The results obtained were found to be consistent with the prediction of the total Routhian surface calculations using Woods Saxon potential. The same calculations also predict a change in shape from oblate to triaxial in $^{195}$Bi at high rotational frequency.
