A variational atomic model of plasma accounting for ion radial correlations and electronic structure of ions (VAMPIRES)

We propose a model of ion-electron plasma (or nucleus-electron plasma) that accounts for the electronic structure around nuclei (i.e. ion structure) as well as for ion-ion correlations. The model equations are obtained through the minimization of an approximate free-energy functional, and it is shown that the model fulfills the virial theorem. The main hypotheses of this model are 1) nuclei are treated as classical indistinguishable particles 2) electronic density is seen as a superposition of a uniform background and spherically-symmetric distributions around each nucleus (system of ions in a plasma) 3) free energy is approached using a cluster expansion (non-overlapping ions) 4) resulting ion fluid is modeled through an approximate integral equation. In the present paper, the model is described only in its average-atom version.

Variational average-atom model of electron-ion plasma with correlations and quantum bound electrons

In the present paper, we propose a variational average-atom model of electron-ion plasma performing a quantum treatment of bound electrons and accounting for correlations (VAAQBEC). This model addresses the correlation functions in a weakly-coupled plasma, while also accounting self-consistently for the ion average shell structure. This is done at the price of treating the free electrons classically, whereas bound electrons are treated quantum-mechanically. When ions are approximated by point-like particles, the present approach yields the usual Debye-Hückel corrections to the orbital energies and chemical potential. If one disregards the interactions of continuum electrons, the present approach yields ion-ion correlation corrections through a self-consistent one-component-classical-plasma contribution. Comparisons are presented with the broadly-used continuum-lowering approach of Stewart and Pyatt and with the dense-plasma average-atom models INFERNO and VAAQP, on warm silicon and hot iron cases.

Addendum to "Free-energy functional of the Debye-Hückel model of simple fluids"

In previous publications [arXiv:1608.08430, arXiv:1704.06502], the authors have proposed Debye-Hückel-approximate free-energy functionals of the pair distribution functions for one-component fluid and two-component plasmas. These functionals yield the corresponding Debye-Hückel integral equations when they are minimized with respect to the pair distribution functions, lead to correct thermodynamic relations and fulfill the virial theorem. In the present addendum, we update our results by providing simpler functionals that have the same properties. We relate these functionals to the approaches of Lado [Phys. Rev. A 8:2548, 1973] and of Olivares and McQuarrie [J. Chem. Phys. 65:3604, 1976]. We also discuss briefly the non-uniqueness issue that is raised by these results.

Free-energy functional of the Debye-Hückel model of two-component plasmas

We present a generalization of the Debye-Hückel free-energy-density functional of simple fluids to the case of two-component systems with arbitrary interaction potentials. It allows one to obtain the two-component Debye-Hückel integral equations through its minimization with respect to the pair correlation functions, leads to the correct form of the internal energy density, and fulfills the virial theorem. It is based on our previous idea, proposed for the one-component Debye-Hückel approach, and which was published recently \cite{Piron16}. We use the Debye-Kirkwood charging method in the same way as in \cite{Piron16}, in order to build an expression of the free-energy density functional. Main properties of the two-component Debye-Hückel free energy are presented and discussed, including the virial theorem in the case of long-range interaction potentials.

Free-energy functional of the Debye-Hückel model of simple fluids

The Debye-Hückel approximation to the free-energy of a simple fluid is written as a functional of the pair correlation function. This functional can be seen as the Debye-Hückel equivalent to the functional derived in the hyper-netted chain framework by Morita and Hiroike, as well as by Lado. It allows one to obtain the Debye-Hückel integral equation through a minimization with respect to the pair correlation function, leads to the correct form of the internal energy, and fulfills the virial theorem.

Linear response of a variational average atom in plasma : semi-classical model

The frequency-dependent linear response of a plasma is studied in the finite-temperature Thomas-Fermi approximation, with electron dynamics described using Bloch hydrodynamics. The variational framework of average-atoms in a plasma is used. Extinction cross-sections are calculated for several plasma conditions. Comparisons with a previously studied Thomas-Fermi Impurity in Jellium model are presented. An Ehrenfest-type sum rule, originally proposed in a full quantum approach is derived in the present formalism and checked numerically. This sum rule is used to define Bremsstrahlung and collective contributions to the extinction cross-section. It is shown that none of these is negligible. Each can constitute the main contribution to the cross-section, depending on the frequency region and plasma conditions. This result obtained in the Thomas-Fermi-Bloch case stresses the importance of the self consistent approach to the linear response in general. Some of the methods used in this study can be extended to the linear response in the quantum case.

Comparison of Fe and Ni opacity calculations for a better understanding of pulsating stellar envelopes

Opacity is an important ingredient of the evolution of stars. The calculation of opacity coefficients is complicated by the fact that the plasma contains partially ionized heavy ions that contribute to opacity dominated by H and He. Up to now, the astrophysical community has greatly benefited from the work of the contributions of Los Alamos [1], Livermore [2] and the Opacity Project (OP) [3]. However unexplained differences of up to 50% in the radiative forces and Rosseland mean values for Fe have been noticed for conditions corresponding to stellar envelopes. Such uncertainty has a real impact on the understanding of pulsating stellar envelopes, on the excitation of modes, and on the identification of the mode frequencies. Temperature and density conditions equivalent to those found in stars can now be produced in laboratory experiments for various atomic species. Recently the photo-absorption spectra of nickel and iron plasmas have been measured during the LULI 2010 campaign, for temperatures between 15 and 40 eV and densities of ~3 mg/cm3. A large theoretical collaboration, the "OPAC", has been formed to prepare these experiments. We present here the set of opacity calculations performed by eight different groups for conditions relevant to the LULI 2010 experiment and to astrophysical stellar envelope conditions.

Iron and Nickel spectral opacity calculations in conditions relevant for pulsating stellar envelopes and experiments

Seismology of stars is strongly developing. To address this question we have formed an international collaboration OPAC to perform specific experimental measurements, compare opacity calculations and improve the opacity calculations in the stellar codes [1]. We consider the following opacity codes: SCO, CASSANDRA, STA, OPAS, LEDCOP, OP, SCO-RCG. Their comparison has shown large differences for Fe and Ni in equivalent conditions of envelopes of type II supernova precursors, temperatures between 15 and 40 eV and densities of a few mg/cm3 [2, 3, 4]. LEDCOP, OPAS, SCO-RCG structure codes and STA give similar results and differ from OP ones for the lower temperatures and for spectral interval values [3]. In this work we discuss the role of Configuration Interaction (CI) and the influence of the number of used configurations. We present and include in the opacity code comparisons new HULLAC-v9 calculations [5, 6] that include full CI. To illustrate the importance of this effect we compare different CI approximations (modes) available in HULLAC-v9 [7]. These results are compared to previous predictions and to experimental data. Differences with OP results are discussed.

Radiative properties of stellar plasmas and open challenges

The lifetime of solar-like stars, the envelope structure of more massive stars, and stellar acoustic frequencies largely depend on the radiative properties of the stellar plasma. Up to now, these complex quantities have been estimated only theoretically. The development of the powerful tools of helio- and astero- seismology has made it possible to gain insights on the interiors of stars. Consequently, increased emphasis is now placed on knowledge of the monochromatic opacity coefficients. Here we review how these radiative properties play a role, and where they are most important. We then concentrate specifically on the envelopes of $β$ Cephei variable stars. We discuss the dispersion of eight different theoretical estimates of the monochromatic opacity spectrum and the challenges we need to face to check these calculations experimentally.

Thermodynamic coherence of the Variational Average-Atom in Quantum Plasmas (VAAQP) approach

A new code called VAAQP (Variational Average-Atom in Quantum Plasmas) is reported. The model as well as main results of previous studies are briefly recalled. The code is based on a new fully variational model of dense plasmas at equilibrium with quantum treatment of all electrons. The code can calculate the Average Atom structure and the mean ionization from the variational equations respecting the virial theorem and without imposing the neutrality of the Wigner-Seitz sphere. The formula obtained for the electronic pressure is simple and does not require any numerical differentiation. A description of the principal features of the code is given. The thermodynamic consistency of the results obtained with VAAQP is shown by a comparison with another approach on the example of the aluminium 10 eV isotherm EOS curve. A first comparison to an INFERNO-type model is also presented.

Variational Average-Atom in Quantum Plasmas (VAAQP) - first numerical results

The work on a new fully variational model of average-atom in quantum plasmas using a numerical code called VAAQP is reported. A brief description of the code is given. Application to aluminium at solid density and temperatures between 0.05 and 12 eV is presented. Comparisons to results obtained using other approaches are also shown and discussed. The results prove the feasibility of the variational model in the warm dense matter regime. Effects of the variational treatment can lead in this region to significant differences with respect to existing models.
