High-Precision Lattice QCD Confronts Experiment

We argue that high-precision lattice QCD is now possible, for the first time, because of a new improved staggered quark discretization. We compare a wide variety of nonperturbative calculations in QCD with experiment, and find agreement to within statistical and systematic errors of 3% or less. We also present a new determination of alpha_msbar(Mz); we obtain 0.121(3). We discuss the implications of this breakthrough for phenomenology and, in particular, for heavy-quark physics.

Heavy-light meson decay constants with N_f=3

During the past year the MILC Collaboration has continued its study of heavy-light meson decay constants with three dynamical quarks. Calculations have been extended to a second lattice spacing of about 0.09 fm. At this lattice spacing, there are results in the quenched approximation and for three sets of dynamical quark mass: m_l=m_s; m_l=0.4 m_s and m_l=0.2 m_s, where m_l is the light mass for the u and d quarks and m_s is the strange quark mass. At the coarser lattice spacing, for which results were presented at Lattice 2001, statistics have been increased for two sets of quark masses and three additional sets of quark masses have been studied, giving a total of eight combinations used to interpolate between the quenched and chiral limits. When these calculations are completed, we can study the decay constants taking into account both chiral and continuum extrapolations.

Exotic hybrid mesons from improved Kogut-Susskind fermions

We summarize our measurement of the mass of the exotic $1^{-+}$ hybrid meson using an improved Kogut-Susskind action. We show results from both quenched and dynamical quark simulations and compare with results from Wilson quarks. Extrapolation of these results to the physical quark mass allows comparison with experimental candidates for the $1^{-+}$ hybrid meson.

High temperature QCD with three flavors of improved staggered quarks

We present an update of our study of high temperature QCD with three flavors of quarks, using a Symanzik improved gauge action and the Asqtad staggered quark action. Simulations are being carried out on lattices with Nt=4, 6 and 8 for the case of three degenerate quarks with masses less than or equal to the strange quark mass, $m_s$, and on lattices with Nt=6 and 8 for degenerate up and down quarks with masses in the range 0.2 m_s \leq m_{u,d} \leq 0.6 m_s, and the strange quark fixed near its physical value. We also report on first computations of quark number susceptibilities with the Asqtad action. These susceptibilities are of interest because they can be related to event-by-event fluctuations in heavy ion collision experiments. Use of the improved quark action leads to a substantial reduction in lattice artifacts. This can be seen already for free fermions and carries over into our results for QCD.

Static hybrid quarkonium potential with improved staggered quarks

We are studying the effects of light dynamical quarks on the excitation energies of a flux tube between a static quark and antiquark. We report preliminary results of an analysis of the ground state potential and the $Σ^{\prime+}_g$ and $Π_u$ potentials. We have measured these potentials on closely matched ensembles of gauge configurations, generated in the quenched approximation and with 2+1 flavors of Asqtad improved staggered quarks.

Topological susceptibility with the improved Asqtad action

As a test of the chiral properties of the improved Asqtad (staggered fermion) action, we have been measuring the topological susceptibility as a function of quark masses for 2 + 1 dynamical flavors. We report preliminary results, which show reasonable agreement with leading order chiral perturbation theory for lattice spacing less than 0.1 fm. The total topological charge, however, shows strong persistence over Monte Carlo time.

Light hadron properties with improved staggered quarks

Preliminary results from simulations with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors at a lattice spacing of 0.09 fm are combined with earlier results at a=0.13 fm. We examine the approach to the continuum limit and investigate the dependence of the pseudoscalar masses and decay constants as the sea and valence quark masses are separately varied.

Heavy-light decay constants with three dynamical flavors

We present preliminary results for the heavy-light leptonic decay constants in the presence of three light dynamical flavors. We generate dynamical configurations with improved staggered and gauge actions and analyze them for heavy-light physics with tadpole improved clover valence quarks. When the scale is set by $m_ρ$, we find an increase of approximately 23% in $f_B$ with three dynamical flavors over the quenched case. Discretization errors appear to be small (of order 3% or less) in the quenched case but have not yet been measured in the dynamical case.

Thermodynamics with 3 and 2+1 Flavors of Improved Staggered Quarks

We present preliminary results from exploring the phase diagram of finite temperature QCD with three degenerate flavors and with two light flavors and the mass of the third held approximately at the strange quark mass. We use an order $α_s^2 a^2, a^4$ Symanzik improved gauge action and an order $α_s a^2, a^4$ improved staggered quark action. The improved staggered action leads to a dispersion relation with diminished lattice artifacts, and hence better thermodynamic properties. It decreases the flavor symmetry breaking of staggered quarks substantially, and we estimate that at the transition temperature for an $N_t=8$ to $N_t=10$ lattice {\em all} pions will be lighter than the lightest kaon. Preliminary results on lattices with $N_t=4$, 6 and 8 are presented.

Zero Temperature String Breaking with Staggered Quarks

The separation of a heavy quark and antiquark pair leads to the formation of a tube of flux, or "string", which should break in the presence of light quark-antiquark pairs. This expected zero-temperature phenomenon has proven elusive in simulations of lattice QCD. In an extension of work reported last year we present clear evidence for string breaking in QCD with two flavors of dynamical staggered sea quarks and apply our results to a simple three-state mixing model for string breaking. We find that mixing is weak and falls to zero at level crossing.

Quark Loop Effects with an Improved Staggered Action

We have been studying effects of dynamical quarks on various hadronic observables, using our recently formulated improvement for staggered fermions. To illustrate improvement, we show that the light hadron spectrum in the quenched approximation gives remarkably good scaling. We highlight three new results: (1) We find no apparent quark loop effects in the Edinburgh plot with 2+1 flavors of dynamical quarks at a = 0.14 fm. (2) We show that dynamical quarks modify the shape of the heavy quark potential. (3) We present results hinting at meson decay effects in light hadron spectroscopy.

The static quark potential in three flavor QCD

We study the effects of dynamical quarks on the static quark potential at distances shorter than those where string breaking is expected. Quenched calculations and calculations with three flavors of dynamical quarks are done on sets of lattices with the lattice spacings matched within about one percent. The effect of the sea quarks on the shape of the potential is clearly visible. We investigate the consequences of these effects in a very crude model, namely solving Schroedinger's equation in the resulting potential.

Scaling tests of the improved Kogut-Susskind quark action

Improved lattice actions for Kogut-Susskind quarks have been shown to improve rotational symmetry and flavor symmetry. In this work we find improved scaling behavior of the rho and nucleon masses expressed in units of a length scale obtained from the static quark potential, and better behavior of the Dirac operator in instanton backgrounds.
