Terahertz cascades from nanoparticles

In this article we propose a system capable of THz radiation with quantum yield above unity. The system consists of nanoparticles where the material composition varies along the radial direction of each nanoparticle in such a way that a ladder of equidistant energy levels emerges. By then exciting the highest level of this ladder we produce multiple photons of the same frequency in the THz range. We demonstrate how we can calculate a continuous material composition profile that achieves a high quantum yield and then show that a more experimentally friendly design of a multishell nanoparticle can still result in a high quantum yield.

Semiconductor quantum well irradiated by a two-mode electromagnetic field as a terahertz emitter

We study theoretically the nonlinear optical properties of a semiconductor quantum well (QW) irradiated by a two-mode electromagnetic wave consisting of a strong resonant dressing field and a weak off-resonant driving field. In the considered strongly coupled electron-field system, the dressing field opens dynamic Stark gaps in the electron energy spectrum of the QW, whereas the driving field induces electron oscillations in the QW plane. Since the gapped electron spectrum restricts the amplitude of the oscillations, the emission of a frequency comb from the QW appears. Therefore, the doubly-driven QW operates as a nonlinear optical element which can be used, particularly, for optically controlled generation of terahertz radiation.

Phonon-Mediated Phase Transitions in Two-Dimensional Driven-Dissipative Systems

We develop a two-dimensional stochastic dissipative theory for the description of the transport of exciton polaritons accounting for their interaction with the environment of acoustic phonons. Our approach is based on the explicit modeling of the corresponding microscopic processes using a Monte Carlo framework rather than modeling from phenomenological principles. We show the dynamic formation of a condensate and investigate its characteristics, including threshold-like behavior in populations and the formation of spatial and temporal coherence at different temperatures of the environment and accounting for the stimulated nonlinear scattering, caused by system-environment interaction. The spatial coherence reveals a transition from an exponential to polynomial decay which can be attributed to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitzh-Thouless-like phase.

Synchronization crossover of polariton condensates in weakly disordered lattices

We demonstrate that the synchronization of a lattice of solid-state condensates when inter-site tunnelling is switched on, depends strongly on the weak local disorder. This finding is vital for implementation of condensate arrays as computation devices. The condensates here are nonlinear bosonic fluids of exciton-polaritons trapped in a weakly disordered Bose-Hubbard potential, where the nearest neighboring tunneling rate (Josephson coupling) can be dynamically tuned. The system can thus be tuned from a localized to a delocalized fluid as the number density, or the Josephson coupling between nearest neighbors increases. The localized fluid is observed as a lattice of unsynchronized condensates emitting at different energies set by the disorder potential. In the delocalized phase the condensates synchronize, and long-range order appears, evidenced by narrowing of momentum and energy distributions, new diffraction peaks in momentum space, and spatial coherence between condensates. Our work identifies similarities and differences of this nonequilibrium crossover to the traditional Bose-glass to superfluid transition in atomic condensates.

The Design for a Nanoscale Single-Photon Spin Splitter

We propose using the effective spin-orbit interaction of light in Bragg-modulated cylindrical waveguides for the effcient separation of spin-up and spin-down photons emitted by a single photon emitter. Due to the spin and directional dependence of photonic stopbands in the waveguides, spin-up (down) photon propagation in the negative (positive) direction along the waveguide axis is blocked while the same photon freely propagates in the opposite direction.

Parity bifurcations in trapped multistable phase locked exciton-polariton condensates

We present a theoretical scheme for multistability in planar microcavity exciton-polariton condensates under nonresonant driving. Using an excitation profile resulting in a spatially patterned condensate, we observe organized phase locking which can abruptly reorganize as a result of pump induced instability made possible by nonlinear interactions. For $π/2$ symmetric systems this reorganization can be regarded as a parity transition and is found to be a fingerprint of multistable regimes existing over a finite range of excitation strengths. The natural degeneracy of the planar equations of motion gives rise to parity bifurcation points where the condensate, as a function of excitation intensity, bifurcates into one of two anisotropic degenerate solutions. Deterministic transitions between multistable states are made possible using controlled nonresonant pulses, perturbing the solution from one attractor to another.

Kinetic Monte Carlo Approach to Non-equilibrium Bosonic Systems

We consider the use of a Kinetic Monte Carlo approach for the description of non-equilibrium bosonic systems, taking non-resonantly excited exciton-polariton condensates and bosonic cascade lasers as examples. In the former case, the considered approach allows the study of the cross-over between incoherent and coherent regimes, which represents the formation of a quasi-condensate that forms purely from the action of energy relaxation processes rather than interactions between the condensing particles themselves. In the latter case, we show that a bosonic cascade can theoretically develop an output coherent state.

Spin order and phase transitions in chains of polariton condensates

We demonstrate that multiply-coupled spinor polariton condensates can be optically tuned through a sequence of spin-ordered phases by changing the coupling strength between nearest neighbors. For closed 4-condensate chains these phases span from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM), separated by an unexpected crossover phase. This crossover phase is composed of alternating FM-AFM bonds. For larger 8 condensate chains, we show the critical role of spatial inhomogeneities and demonstrate a scheme to overcome them and prepare any desired spin state. Our observations thus demonstrate a fully controllable non-equilibrium spin lattice.

Optically induced transparency in bosonic cascade lasers

Bosonic cascade lasers are terahertz (THz) lasers based on stimulated radiative transitions between bosonic condensates of excitons or exciton-polaritons confined in a trap. We study the interaction of an incoming THz pulse resonant in frequency with the transitions between neighboring energy levels of the cascade. We show that at certain optical pump conditions the cascade becomes transparent to the incident pulse: it neither absorbs nor amplifies it, in the mean field approximation. The populations of intermediate levels of the bosonic cascade change as the THz pulse passes, nevertheless. In comparison, a fermionic cascade laser does not reveal any of these properties.

Spontaneous polariton currents in periodic lateral chains

We predict spontaneous generation of superfluid polariton currents in planar microcavities with lateral periodic modulation of both potential and decay rate. A spontaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry of a polariton condensate emerges at a critical pumping, and the current direction is stochastically chosen. We analyse the stability of the current with respect to the fluctuations of the condensate. A peculiar spatial current domain structure emerges, where the current direction is switched at the domain walls, and the characteristic domain size and lifetime scale with the pumping power.

Spontaneous and Superfluid Chiral Edge States in Exciton-Polariton Condensates

We present a scheme of interaction-induced topological bandstructures based on the spin anisotropy of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. We predict theoretically that this scheme allows the engineering of topological gaps, without requiring a magnetic field or strong spin-orbit interaction (transverse electric-transverse magnetic splitting). Under non-resonant pumping, we find that an initially topologically trivial system undergoes a topological transition upon the spontaneous breaking of phase symmetry associated with polariton condensation. Under resonant coherent pumping, we find that it is also possible to engineer a topological dispersion that is linear in wavevector -- a property associated with polariton superfluidity.

Quantum Exciton-Polariton Networks through Inverse Four-Wave Mixing

We demonstrate the potential of quantum operation using lattices of exciton-polaritons in patterned semiconductor microcavities. By introducing an inverse four-wave mixing scheme acting on localized modes, we show that it is possible to develop non-classical correlations between individual condensates. This allows a concept of quantum exciton-polariton networks, characterized by the appearance of multimode entanglement even in the presence of realistic levels of dissipation.

Multivalley engineering in semiconductor microcavities

We consider exciton-photon coupling in semiconductor microcavities in which separate periodic potentials have been embedded for excitons and photons. We show theoretically that this system supports degenerate ground-states appearing at non-zero in-plane momenta, corresponding to multiple valleys in reciprocal space, which are further separated in polarization corresponding to a polarization-valley coupling in the system. Aside forming a basis for valleytronics, the multivalley dispersion is predicted to allow for spontaneous momentum symmetry breaking and two-mode squeezing under non-resonant and resonant excitation, respectively.

Chiral modes at exceptional points in exciton-polariton quantum fluids

We demonstrate generation of chiral modes -- vortex flows with fixed handedness in exciton-polariton quantum fluids. The chiral modes arise in the vicinity of exceptional points (non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies) in an optically-induced resonator for exciton polaritons. In particular, a vortex is generated by driving two dipole modes of the non-Hermitian ring resonator into degeneracy. Transition through the exceptional point in the space of the system's parameters is enabled by precise manipulation of real and imaginary parts of the closed-wall potential forming the resonator. As the system is driven to the vicinity of the exceptional point, we observe the formation of a vortex state with a fixed orbital angular momentum (topological charge). Our method can be extended to generate high-order orbital angular momentum states through coalescence of multiple non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies, which could find application in integrated optoelectronics.

Spontaneous condensation of exciton polaritons in the single-shot regime

Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity is a macroscopically populated coherent quantum state subject to concurrent pumping and decay. Debates about the fundamental nature of the condensed phase in this open quantum system still persist. Here, we gain a new insight into the spontaneous condensation process by imaging long-lifetime exciton polaritons in a high-quality inorganic microcavity in the single-shot optical excitation regime, without averaging over multiple condensate realisations. In this highly non-stationary regime, a condensate is strongly influenced by the `hot' incoherent reservoir, and reservoir depletion is critical for the transition to the ground energy and momentum state. Condensates formed by more photonic exciton polaritons exhibit dramatic reservoir-induced density filamentation and shot-to-shot fluctuations. In contrast, condensates of more excitonic quasiparticles display smooth density and are second-order coherent. Our observations show that the single-shot measurements offer a unique opportunity to study formation of macroscopic phase coherence during a quantum phase transition in a solid state system.

A driven-dissipative spin chain model based on exciton-polariton condensates

An infinite chain of driven-dissipative condensate spins with uniform nearest-neighbor coherent coupling is solved analytically and investigated numerically. Above a critical occupation threshold the condensates undergo spontaneous spin bifurcation (becoming magnetized) forming a binary chain of spin-up or spin-down states. Minimization of the bifurcation threshold determines the magnetic order as a function of the coupling strength. This allows control of multiple magnetic orders via adiabatic (slow ramping of) pumping. In addition to ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic ordered states we show the formation of a paired-spin ordered state $\left|\dots \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \dots \right. \rangle$ as a consequence of the phase degree of freedom between condensates.

Interactive optomechanical coupling with nonlinear polaritonic systems

We study a system of interacting matter quasiparticles strongly coupled to photons inside an optomechanical cavity. The resulting normal modes of the system are represented by hybrid polaritonic quasiparticles, which acquire effective nonlinearity. Its strength is influenced by the presence of the mechanical mode and depends on the resonance frequency of the cavity. This leads to an interactive type of optomechanical coupling, being distinct from the previously studied dispersive and dissipative couplings in optomechanical systems. The emergent interactive coupling is shown to generate effective optical nonlinearity terms of high order, being quartic in the polariton number. We consider particular systems of exciton-polaritons and dipolaritons, and show that the induced effective optical nonlinearity due to the interactive coupling can exceed in magnitude the strength of Kerr nonlinear terms, such as those arising from polariton-polariton interactions. As applications, we show that the higher order terms give rise to localized bright flat top solitons, which may form spontaneously in polariton condensates.

Robust platform for engineering pure-quantum-state transitions in polariton condensates

We report on pure-quantum-state polariton condensates in optical annular traps. The study of the underlying mechanism reveals that the polariton wavefunction always coalesces in a single pure-quantum-state that, counter-intuitively, is always the uppermost confined state with the highest overlap to the exciton reservoir. The tunability of such states combined with the short polariton lifetime allows for ultrafast transitions between coherent mesoscopic wavefunctions of distinctly different symmetries rendering optically confined polariton condensates a promising platform for applications such as many-body quantum circuitry and continuous-variable quantum processing.
