Exploring Quantum Cosmology within the Framework of Teleparallel $f(T)$-gravity

We investigate quantum cosmology in teleparallel $f(T)$-gravity. We delve extensively into the minisuperspace description within the context of teleparallelism. The $f(T)$-theory constitutes a second-order theory of gravity, whose cosmological counterpart is delineated by a degenerate point-like Lagrangian. To formulate the Hamiltonian function encompassing all constraints and degrees of freedom inherent to $f(T)$ cosmology, we employ the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm. Subsequently, we determine the wave function of the universe and introduce a ``probabilistic'' interpretation. We perform comparisons to some classical solutions to see to what extent the quantum approach can cure classical singularities.

Minisuperspace description of $f(Q)$-cosmology

We investigate the existence of minisuperspace description for the homogeneous cosmological field equations within the framework of symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-gravity. We consider the background space to be described by the isotropic Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker geometry, the anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs and the anisotropic Bianchi III geometries. Across all these models, we establish that the field equations in $f(Q)$-cosmology exhibit second-order characteristics in the coincident gauge and those of a sixth-order theory in the non-coincident gauge. Specifically, within the latter scenario, the dynamic degrees of freedom are attributed to two scalar fields. Finally, as an example of integrability, we derive a vacuum cosmological solution within the non-coincident gauge.

Anisotropic Solutions in Symmetric Teleparallel $f\left( Q\right)$-theory: Kantowski-Sachs and Bianchi III LRS Cosmologies

We investigate the existence of anisotropic self-similar exact solutions in symmetric teleparallel $f\left( Q\right)$-theory. For the background geometry we consider the Kantowski-Sachs and the Locally Rotationally Symmetric Bianchi type III geometries. These two anisotropic spacetimes are of special interest because in the limit of isotropy they are related to the closed and open Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker cosmologies respectively. For each spacetime there exist two distinct families of flat, symmetric connections, which share the symmetries of the spacetime. We present the field equations, and from them, we determine the functional form of the $f\left( Q\right)$ Lagrangian which yields self-similar solutions. We initially consider the vacuum case and subsequently we introduce a matter source in terms of a perfect fluid. Last but not least, we report some self-similar solutions corresponding to static spherically symmetric spacetimes.

Self-similar Cosmological Solutions in Symmetric Teleparallel theory: Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetimes

The existence of self-similar solutions is discussed in symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-theory for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background geometry with zero and non-zero spatial curvature. For the four distinct families of connections which describe the specific cosmology in symmetric teleparallel gravity, the functional form of $f(Q)$ is reconstructed. Finally, to see if the analogy with General Relativity holds, we discuss the relation of the self-similar solutions with the asymptotic behaviour of more general $f(Q)$ functions.

FLRW solutions in $f(Q)$ theory: the effect of using different connections

We study a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time in the theory of $f(Q)$-gravity, where $Q$ denotes the non-metricity scalar. It has been previously shown in the literature, that there exist four distinct families of connections, which are compatible with the isometries of the FLRW metric; three for the spatially flat case and one when the spatial curvature is present. In the spatially flat case, one connection is dynamically irrelevant and yields the dynamics of the coincident gauge in the Cartesian coordinates. For this, we obtain the general solution of an arbitrary $f(Q)$ theory with a perfect fluid matter content, and present various examples for specific choices of the $f(Q)$ function. We proceed by studying the effect of the rest of the connections, which are dynamical and affect the equations of the motion. We concentrate in scenarios that depart from the $Q=$const. case, which just reproduces General Relativity with a cosmological constant, and derive novel vacuum solutions for a power-law $f(Q)$ function.

Quantum Cosmology in $f(Q)$ theory

We use Dirac's method for the quantization of constrained systems in order to quantize a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime in the context of $f(Q)$ cosmology. When the coincident gauge is considered, the resulting minisuperspace system possesses second class constraints. This distinguishes the quantization process from the typical Wheeler-DeWitt quantization, which is applied for cosmological models where only first class constraints are present (e.g. for models in General Relativity or in $f(R)$ gravity). We introduce the Dirac brackets, find appropriate canonical coordinates and then apply the canonical quantization procedure. We perform this method both in vacuum and in the presence of matter: a minimally coupled scalar field and a perfect fluid with a linear equation of state. We demonstrate that the matter content changes significantly the quantization procedure, with the perfect fluid even requiring to put in use the theory of fractional Quantum Mechanics in which the power of the momentum in the Hamiltonian is associated with the fractal dimension of a Lévy flight. The results of this analysis can be applied in $f(T)$ teleparallel cosmology, since $f(Q)$ and $f(T)$ theories have the same degrees of freedom and same dynamical constraints in cosmological studies.

Quantization of Einstein-aether Scalar field Cosmology

We present, for the first time, the quantization process for the Einstein-aether scalar field cosmology. We consider a cosmological theory proposed as a Lorentz violating inflationary model, where the aether and scalar fields interact through the assumption that the aether action constants are ultra-local functions of the scalar field. For this specific theory there is a valid minisuperspace description which we use to quantize. For a particular relation between the two free functions entering the reduced Lagrangian the solution to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation as also the generic classical solution are presented for any given arbitrary potential function.

Infinite dimensional symmetry groups of the Friedmann equations

We find the symmetry generators for the Friedman equations emanating from a perfect fluid source, in the presence of a cosmological constant term. The relevant dynamics is seen to be governed by two coupled, first order ordinary differential equations, the continuity and the quadratic constraint equation. Arbitrary functions appear in the components of the symmetry vector, indicating the infinity of the group. When the equation of state is considered as arbitrary but ab initio given, previously known results are recovered and/or generalized. When the pressure is considered among the dynamical variables, solutions for models with different equations of state are mapped to each other; thus enabling the presentation of solutions to models with complicated equations of state starting from simple known cases.

On solvable Lie algebras and integration method of ordinary differential equations

Some more general "inheritance conditions" have been found for a given set of symmetry generators $\{\mathbf{Z}_{\bar{l}}\}$ acting on some set of coupled ordinary differential equations, once the "first integration method" has been applied upon some Abelian sub-algebra of generators $\{\mathbf{Z}_{i}\}$ for the system of equations to be reduced. We have proven the following theorem: all the generators of some solvable sub-algebra can be used via the "first integration method" in order to reduce (the order) and/or (possibly) integrate the system of equations. The specific order in which the step by step reduction process has to be performed, and the condition to obtain the analytic solution solely in terms of quadratures, are also provided. We define the notion "optimum" for some given maximal, solvable sub-algebra and prove a theorem stating that: this algebra leads to the most profitable way of using the symmetry generators for the integration procedure at hand.

Exact solutions of Einstein-aether gravity in Bianchi Type V Cosmology

We present the solution space of the field equations in the Einstein-aether theory for the case of a vacuum Bianchi Type V space-time. We also find that there are portions of the initial parameters space for which no solution is admitted by the reduced equations. Whenever solutions do exist, their physical interpretation is examined through the behavior of Ricci and/or Kretsmann scalar, as well as with the identification of the effective energy momentum tensor in terms of a perfect fluid. There are cases in which no singularities appear and others where the effective fluid is isotropic.

Dynamically equivalent ΛCDM equations with underlying Bianchi Type geometry

Solutions have been found for gravity coupled to electromagnetic field and a set of charged and uncharged perfect fluids for Bianchi Types VI_{(-1)}, VIII, IX, under the primary assumption of the existence of a conformal Killing vector field. The electromagnetic field ``absorbs'' the ``frozen'' anisotropy and the remaining equations are dynamically equivalent with the equations of ΛCDM. There are solutions with flat, negative and positive effective spatial curvature corresponding to the three FLRW classes. Three equations of state for the charged perfect fluid where studied: non-relativistic w=0, relativistic w=\frac{1}{3} and dark energy-like w=-1. For the first two cases, maximum values exist for the scale factor, in order for the weak energy conditions to be respected, which depend upon the geometric and charged fluid parameters. A minimum value for the scale factor exists (for the solutions to be valid) in all the cases and Types, indicating the absence of initial spacetime singularity (big bang). This minimum value depends upon the geometric and electromagnetic parameters. The number of essential constants in the final form of each metric is the minimum without loss of generality due to the use of the constant Automorphism's group. A known solution, with the anisotropy absorbed via one free scalar field is reproduced with our method and contains the minimum possible number of parameters.

Cosmological Solutions in Multiscalar Field Theory

We consider a cosmological model with two scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity which have a mixed kinetic term. Hence, Chiral cosmology is included in our analysis. The coupling function and the potential function, which depend on one of the fields, characterize the model we study. We prove the existence of exact solutions that are of special interest for the cosmological evolution. Furthermore, we provide with a methodology that relates the scale factor behaviour to the free functions characterizing the scalar field kinetic term coupling and potential. We derive the necessary conditions that connect these two functions so that the relative cosmological solutions can be admitted. We find that unified dark matter and dark energy solutions are allowed by the theory in various scenarios involving the aforementioned functions.

Classical and quantum analysis of 3D electromagnetic pp-wave spacetime

The general classical solution of the 3D electromagnetic pp-wave spacetime has been obtained. The relevant line element contains an arbitrary essential function providing an infinite number of in-equivalent geometries as solutions. A classification is presented based on the symmetry group. To the best of our knowledge, the solution corresponding to only one of the Classes is known. The dynamics of some of the Classes was also derived from a minisuperspace Lagrangian which has been constructed. This Lagrangian contains a degree of freedom (the lapse) which can be considered either as dynamical or non-dynamical (indicating a singular or a regular Lagrangian correspondingly). Surprisingly enough, on the space of classical solutions, an equivalence of these two points of view can be established. The canonical quantization is then used in order to quantize the system for both the singular and regular Hamiltonian. A subsequent interpretation of quantum states is based on a Bohm-like analysis. The semi-classical trajectories deviate from the classical only for the regular Hamiltonian and in particular for a superposition of eigenstates (a Gaussian initial state has been used). Thus, the above mentioned equivalence is broken at the quantum level. It is noteworthy that the semi-classical trajectories tend to the classical ones in the limit where the initial wavepacket is widely spread. Hence, even with this simple superposition state, the classical solutions are acquired as a limit of the semi-classical.

Integrability of geodesic motions in curved manifolds through non-local conserved charges

In this work we study the general system of geodesic equations for the case of a massive particle moving on an arbitrary curved manifold. The investigation is carried out from the symmetry perspective. By exploiting the parametrization invariance property of the system we define nonlocal conserved charges that are independent from the typical integrals of motion constructed out of possible Killing vectors/tensors of the background metric. We show that with their help every two dimensional surface can - at least in principle - be characterized as integrable. Due to the nonlocal nature of these quantities not more than two can be used at the same time unless the solution of the system is known. We demonstrate that even so, the two dimensional geodesic problem can always be reduced to a single first order ordinary differential equation; we also provide several examples of this process.

Integrability of the mixmaster model

The mixmaster model has always been a field of controversy in the literature regarding its (non)integrability. In this work, we make use of a generalized definition of a class of nonlocal conserved charges in phase space to demonstrate that the anisotropic Bianchi type IX model in vacuum is -at least locally - Liouville integrable, thus supporting the findings of previous works pointing to this result. These additional integrals of motion that we use can be defined only due to the parametrization invariance of the system and can be seen to possess an explicit dependence on time. By promoting the time variable to a degree of freedom, we demonstrate the existence of two sets of four independent conserved charges that are in involution, thus leading to the characterization of the system as integrable in terms of the Liouville-Arnold theorem.

Quantum cosmology of Bianchi VIII, IX LRS geometries

In the present work we revisit the axisymmetric Bianchi VIII and IX models. At the classical level we reproduce the known analytic solution, in a novel way making use of two quadratic integrals of motion, the constraint equation, as well as a linear non-local integral of motion. These quantities correspond to two second rank Killing tensors and a homothetic vector field existing on the relevant configuration space. On the corresponding phase space the two quadratic charges commute with the Hamiltonian constraint but not among themselves. Thus, after turning these charges into operators we obtain two different solutions to the Wheeler DeWitt equation utilizing each of the quadratic operators. The homothetic vector is then used, as a natural guide line, to define a normalizable conditional probability which assigns zero to the classically collapsed configurations.

Reduced Lagrangians and analytic solutions in Einstein-æther Cosmology

We present the solution space of the field equations in the Einstein-æther theory for the case of a $FLRW$ and a LRS Bianchi Type $III$ space-time. We also find that there are portions of the initial parameters space for which no solution is admitted by the reduced equations. The reduced Lagrangians deduced from the full action are, in general, correctly describing the dynamics whenever solutions do exist

Quantization of the Szekeres System

We study the quantum corrections on the Szekeres system in the context of canonical quantization in the presence of symmetries. We start from an effective point-like Lagrangian with two integrals of motion, one corresponding to the Hamiltonian and the other to a second rank Killing tensor. Imposing their quantum version on the wave function results to a solution which is then interpreted in the context of Bohmian mechanics. In this semiclassical approach, it is shown that there is no quantum corrections, thus the classical trajectories of the Szekeres system are not affected at this level. Finally, we define a probability function which shows that a stationary surface of the probability corresponds to a classical exact solution
