A symmetry-projected variational approach to the 1-dimensional Hubbard-model

We apply a variational method devised for the nuclear many--body problem to the 1-dimensional Hubbard--model with nearest neighbor hopping and periodic boundary conditions. The test wave function consist for each state out of a single Hartree--Fock determinant mixing all the sites (or momenta) as well as the spin--projections of the electrons. Total spin and linear momentum are restored by projection methods before the variation. It is demonstrated that this approach reproduces the results of exact diagonalisations for half--filled N=12 and N=14 lattices not only for the energies and occupation numbers of the ground but also of the lowest excited states rather well. Furthermore, a system of 10 electrons in a N=12 lattice is investigated and, finally, a N=30 lattice is studied. In addition to energies and occupation numbers we present the spectral functions computed with the help of the symmetry--projected wave functions, too. Also here nice agreement with the exact results (where available) is reached.

Nonlinear microwave response of MgB2

We calculate the intrinsic nonlinear microwave response of the two gap superconductor MgB2 in the clean and dirty limits. Due to the small value of the pi band gap, the nonlinear response at low temperatures is larger than for a single gap Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) s-wave superconductor with a transition temperature of 40 K. Comparing this result with the intrinsic nonlinear d-wave response of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) we find a comparable response at temperatures around 20 K. Due to its two gap nature, impurity scattering in MgB2 can be used to reduce the nonlinear response if the scattering rate in the pi band is made larger than the one in the sigma band.

Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Unquenched ${QED}_3$

We investigate dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in unquenched ${QED}_3$ using the coupled set of Dyson--Schwinger equations for the fermion and photon propagators. For the fermion-photon interaction we employ an ansatz which satisfies its Ward--Green--Takahashi identity. We present self-consistent analytical solutions in the infrared as well as numerical results for all momenta. In Landau gauge, we find a phase transition at a critical number of flavours of $N_f^{\mathrm crit} \approx 4$. In the chirally symmetric phase the infrared behaviour of the propagators is described by power laws with interrelated exponents. For $N_f=1$ and $N_f=2$ we find small values for the chiral condensate in accordance with bounds from recent lattice calculations. We investigate the Dyson--Schwinger equations in other linear covariant gauges as well. A comparison of their solutions to the accordingly transformed Landau gauge solutions shows that the quenched solutions are approximately gauge covariant, but reveals a significant amount of violation of gauge covariance for the unquenched solutions.

Shadow on the wall cast by an Abrikosov vortex

At the surface of a d-wave superconductor, a zero-energy peak in the quasiparticle spectrum can be observed. This peak appears due to Andreev bound states and is maximal if the nodal direction of the d-wave pairing potential is perpendicular to the boundary. We examine the effect of a single Abrikosov vortex in front of a reflecting boundary on the zero-energy density of states. We can clearly see a splitting of the low-energy peak and therefore a suppression of the zero-energy density of states in a shadow-like region extending from the vortex to the boundary. This effect is stable for different models of the single Abrikosov vortex, for different mean free paths and also for different distances between the vortex center and the boundary. This observation promises to have also a substantial influence on the differential conductance and the tunneling characteristics for low excitation energies.

Correlation of microwave surface impedance of MgB_2 thin film with material parameters and a temperature niche for microwave applications

Two issues related to the microwave surface impedance Z_s of MgB_2 thin film are discussed in this Letter, both being significant for potential microwave applications. At first, a correlation between Zs and Alpha = Xi/l was found, where Xi is the coherence length, and l is the mean free path. The surface resistance Rs decreases with Alpha at moderate and large values of Alpha and saturates when Alpha approaches one. The values of the penetration depth at zero temperature Lamda(0) for different films could be well fitted by Lamda_L (1+Alpha)^(1/2), yielding a London penetration depth Lamda_L of 33.6 nm. The second issue is to find a temperature niche for possible microwave applications. Between 10K and 15K, our best MgB_2 films possess the lowest Rs values compared with other superconductors such as NbN, Nb3Sn and the high-temperature superconductor YBCO.

Influence of Fermi surface topology on the quasiparticle spectrum in the vortex state

We study the influence of Fermi surface topology on the quasiparticle density of states in the vortex state of type II superconductors. We observe that the field dependence and the shape of the momentum and spatially averaged density of states is affected significantly by the topology of the Fermi surface. We show that this behavior can be understood in terms of characteristic Fermi surface functions and that an important role is played by the number of points on the Fermi surface at which the Fermi velocity is directed parallel to the magnetic field. A critical comparison is made with a broadened BCS type density of states, that has been used frequently in analysis of tunneling data. We suggest a new formula as a replacement for the broadened BCS model for the special case of a cylindrical Fermi surface. We apply our results to the two gap superconductor MgB$_2$ and show that in this particular case the field dependence of the partial densities of states of the two gaps behaves very differently due to the different topologies of the corresponding Fermi surfaces, in qualitative agreement with recent tunneling experiments.

Anomalous microwave conductivity coherence peak in c-axis MgB2 thin film

The temperature dependence of the real part of the microwave complex conductivity at 17.9 GHz obtained from surface impedance measurements of two c-axis oriented MgB2 thin films reveals a pronounced maximum at a temperature around 0.6 times the critical temperature. Calculations in the frame of a two-band model based on Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory suggest that this maximum corresponds to an anomalous coherence peak resembling the two-gap nature of MgB2. Our model assumes there is no interband impurity scattering and a weak interband pairing interaction, as suggested by bandstructure calculations. In addition, the observation of a coherence peak indicates that the pi-band is in the dirty limit and dominates the total conductivity of our films

Fermi surface topology and the upper critical field in two-band superconductors - application to MgB2

Recent measurements of the anisotropy of the upper critical field Bc2 on MgB2 single crystals have shown a puzzling strong temperature dependence. Here, we present a calculation of the upper critical field based on a detailed modeling of bandstructure calculations that takes into account both the unusual Fermi surface topology and the two gap nature of the superconducting order parameter. Our results show that the strong temperature dependence of the Bc2 anisotropy can be understood as an interplay of the dominating gap on the sigma-band, which possesses a small c-axis component of the Fermi velocity, with the induced superconductivity on the pi-band possessing a large c-axis component of the Fermi velocity. We provide analytic formulas for the anisotropy ratio at T=0 and T=Tc and quantitatively predict the distortion of the vortex lattice based on our calculations.

Fermi surface topology and vortex state in MgB2

Based on a detailed modeling of the Fermi surface topology of MgB2 we calculated the anisotropy of the upper critical field Bc2 within the two gap model. The sigma-band is modeled as a distorted cylinder and the pi-band as a half-torus, with parameters determined from bandstructure calculations. Our results show that the unusual strong temperature dependence of the Bc2 anisotropy, that has been observed recently, can be understood due to the small c-axis dispersion of the cylindrical Fermi surface sheets and the small interband pairing interaction as obtained from bandstructure calculations. We calculate the magnetic field dependence of the density of states within the vortex state for field in c-axis direction and compare with recent measurements of the specific heat on MgB2 single crystals.

Anisotropic s-wave superconductivity: comparison with experiments on MgB2 single crystals

The recently discovered superconductivity in MgB2 has captured world attention due to its simple crystal structure and relatively high superconducting transition temperature Tc=39K. It appears to be generally accepted that it is phonon-mediated s-wave BCS-like superconductivity. Surprisingly, the strongly temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field, observed experimentally in magnesium diboride single crystals, is still lacking a consistent theoretical explanation. We propose a simple single-gap anisotropic s-wave order parameter in order to compare its implications with the prediction of a multi-gap isotropic s-wave model. The quasiparticle density of states, thermodynamic properties, NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate, optical conductivity, and Hc2 anisotropy have been analyzed within this anisotropic s-wave model. We show that the present model can capture many aspects of the unusual superconducting properties of MgB2 compound, though more experimental data appear to be necessary from single crystal MgB2.

Anisotropic critical fields of MgB2 single crystals

The recently discovered superconductivity in MgB2 has created the world sensation. In spite of the relatively high superconducting transition temperature Tc=39K, the superconductivity is understood in terms of rare two gap superconductor with energy gaps attached to the sigma- and pi-band. However, this simple model cannot describe the temperature dependent anisotropy in H_c2 or the temperature dependence of the anisotropic magnetic penetration depth. Here we propose a model with two anisotropic energy gaps with different shapes. Indeed the present model describes a number of pecularities of MgB2 which have been revealed only recently through single crystal MgB2.

Spectrum of low energy excitations in the vortex state: comparison of Doppler shift method to quasiclassical approach

We present a detailed comparison of numerical solutions of the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations with several approximation schemes for the density of states of s- and d-wave superconductors in the vortex state, which have been used recently. In particular, we critically examine the use of the Doppler shift method, which has been claimed to give good results for d-wave superconductors. Studying the single vortex case we show that there are important contributions coming from core states, which extend far from the vortex cores into the nodal directions and are not present in the Doppler shift method, but significantly affect the density of states at low energies. This leads to sizeable corrections to Volovik's law, which we expect to be sensitive to impurity scattering. For a vortex lattice we also show comparisons with the method due to Brandt, Pesch, and Tewordt and an approximate analytical method, generalizing a method due to Pesch. These are high field approximations strictly valid close to the upper critical field Bc2. At low energies the approximate analytical method turns out to give impressively good results over a broad field range and we recommend the use of this method for studies of the vortex state at not too low magnetic fields.

Models of Superconductivity in Sr_2RuO_4

Recent experimental data on purest Sr_2RuO_4 single crystals clearly indicate the presence of nodes in the superconducting order parameter. Here, we consider one special p-wave order parameter symmetry and two two-dimensional f-wave order parameter symmetries having nodes within the RuO_2 plane. These states reasonably describe both specific heat and penetration depth data. We calculate the thermal conductivity tensor for these three states and compare the results with recent thermal conductivity data. This allows us to single out one of these states being consistent with both thermodynamic and thermal conductivity data: the planar f-wave state having B_{1g} x E_u symmetry.

Theoretical analysis of Cooper-pair phase fluctuations in underdoped cuprates: a spin-fluctuation exchange study

We study Cooper-pair phase fluctuations in cuprate superconductors for a spin fluctuation pairing interaction. Using an electronic theory we calculate in particular for the underdoped cuprate superconductors the superfluid density $n_s(T)$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(x) \propto n_s$ below which phase coherent Cooper-pairs occur, and $T_c^{*}(x)$ where the phase incoherent Cooper-pairs disappear. Also we present results for the penetration depth $λ(x,T)$ and for the weak pseudogap temperature $T^{*}(x)$ at which a gap structure occurs in the spectral density. A Meißner effect is obtained only for $T < T_c$. We find that phase fluctuations become increasingly important in the underdoped regime and lead to a reduction of $T_c$ in good agreement with the experimental situation.

Effect of a Normal-State Pseudogap on Optical Conductivity in Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

We calculate the c-axis infrared conductivity $σ_c(ω)$ in underdoped cuprate superconductors for spinfluctuation exchange scattering within the CuO$_2$-planes including a phenomenological d-wave pseudogap of amplitude $E_g$. For temperatures decreasing below a temperature $T^* \sim E_g/2$, a gap for $ω< 2E_g$ develops in $σ_c(ω)$ in the incoherent (diffuse) transmission limit. The resistivity shows 'semiconducting' behavior, i.e. it increases for low temperatures above the constant behavior for $E_g=0$. We find that the pseudogap structure in the in-plane optical conductivity is about twice as big as in the interplane conductivity $σ_c(ω)$, in qualitative agreement with experiment. This is a consequence of the fact that the spinfluctuation exchange interaction is suppressed at low frequencies as a result of the opening of the pseudogap. While the c-axis conductivity in the underdoped regime is described best by incoherent transmission, in the overdoped regime coherent conductance gives a better description.

Nonlinear Current Response of a d-wave Superfluid

Despite several efforts the nonlinear Meissner effect in d-wave superconductors, as has been discussed by Yip and Sauls in 1992, has not been verified experimentally in high-Tc superconductors at present. Here, we reinvestigate the nonlinear response expected in a d-wave superconductor. While the linear H field dependence of the penetration depth, predicted by Yip and Sauls, is restricted by the lower critical field and can be masked by nonlocal effects, we argue that the upturn of the nonlinear coefficient of the quadratic field dependence is more stable and remains observable over a broader range of parameters. We investigate this by studying the influence of nonmagnetic impurities on the nonlinear response. We discuss the difficulties of observing this intrinsic d-wave signature in present day high-Tc films and single crystals.

Collective Modes in High-Temperature Superconductors

The role of collective modes in various experiments on the cuprates is investigated. We calculate the neutron scattering, photoemission (ARPES), and Raman scattering intensities below $T_c$ within the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation for the two-dimensional Hubbard model. It is shown that the large peak in the dynamical spin susceptibility arises from a weakly damped spin-density-wave collective mode. This gives rise to a dip between the sharp low energy peak and the higher binding energy hump in the ARPES spectrum. Furthermore, we show that the collective mode of the amplitude fluctuation of the d-wave gap yields a broad peak above the pair-breaking threshold in the $B_{1g}$ Raman spectrum.

Monte Carlo study of the pairing interaction in the two-leg Hubbard ladder

Monte Carlo calculations of the irreducible particle-particle interaction on a two-leg Hubbard ladder doped near half-filling are reported. As the temperature is lowered, this interaction develops structure in momentum space similar to the magnetic susceptibility $χ(q)$ and reflects the development of strong short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. Using this interaction, the eigenfunction of the leading singlet pair eigenvalue is found to have $d_{x^2-y^2}$ like symmetry. The single-particle spectral weight is also shown to peak near $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ when the ratio of the inter- to intra-chain hopping $t_{\perp}/t\simeq 1.5$, leading to an increased tendency for pairing.
