Nutty black holes in galileon scalar-tensor gravity

Einstein gravity supplemented by a scalar field non-minimally coupled to a Gauss-Bonnet term provides an example of model of scalar-tensor gravity where hairy black holes do exist. We consider the classical equations within a metric endowed with a NUT-charge and obtain a two-parameter family of nutty-hairy black holes. The pattern of these solutions in the exterior and the interior of their horizon is studied in some details. The influence of both -- the hairs and the NUT-charge -- on the lightlike and timelike geodesics is emphasized.

Boson stars, neutron stars and black holes in five dimensions

Different types of gravitating compact objects occuring in d=5 space-time are considered: boson stars, hairy black holes and perfect fluid solutions. All these solutions of the Einstein equations coupled to matter have well established counterparts in d=4; in particular neutron stars can be modell§ed more or less realistically by a perfect fluid. A special emphasis is set on the possibility -and/or the necessity- for these solutions to have an intrinsic angular momentum or spin. The influence of a cosmological constant on their pattern is also studied. Several physical properties are presented from which common features to boson and neutron stars clearly emerge. We finally point out qualitative differences of the gravitational interaction supporting these classical lumps between four and five dimensions.

Giant Pulsar Glitches and the Inertia of Neutron-Star Crusts

Giant pulsar frequency glitches as detected in the emblematic Vela pulsar have long been thought to be the manifestation of a neutron superfluid permeating the inner crust of a neutron star. However, this superfluid has been recently found to be entrained by the crust, and as a consequence it does not carry enough angular momentum to explain giant glitches. The extent to which pulsar-timing observations can be reconciled with the standard vortex-mediated glitch theory is studied considering the current uncertainties on dense-matter properties. To this end, the crustal moment of inertia of glitching pulsars is calculated employing a series of different unified dense-matter equations of state.

Dirac equation for sphercially symmetric $AdS_5$ space-time and application to a boson star in EGB gravity

We discuss the Dirac equation in a curved 5-dimensional spherically symmetric space-time. The angular part of the solutions is thoroughly studied, in a formulation suited for extending to rotating space-times with equal angular momenta. It has a symmetry $SU(2)\times U(1)$ and is implemented by the Wigner functions. The radial part forms a Dirac-Schrödinger type equation, and existence of the analytical solutions of the massless and the massive modes is confirmed. The solutions are described by the Jacobi polynomials. Also, the spinor of the both large and small components is obtained numerically. As a direct application of our formulation, we evaluate the spectrum of the Dirac fermion in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet space-time and the space-time of a boson star.

Gravitating Q-tubes and cylindrical spacetime

We consider a model involving a self-interacting complex scalar field minimally coupled to gravity and emphasize the cylindrically symmetric classical solutions. A general ansatz is performed which transforms the field equations into a system of differential equations. In the generic case, the scalar field depends on the four space-time coordinates. The underlying Einstein vacuum equations are worth studying by themselve and lead to numerous analytic results extending the Kasner solutions. The solutions of the coupled system are -static as well as stationnary- gravitating Q-tubes of scalar matter which deform space-time.

Eddington inspired Born Infeld Theory: A new look to the matter-coupling paradigm

We discuss some of the consequences of changing the matter to gravity coupling without affecting the gravitational dynamics. The Einstein tensor is usually assumed to be proportional to the stress tensor due to the divergence free property of both object. This is not the only consistent way to couple matter to gravity; we explore some aspect of consistent modification to the matter/gravity coupling using the recently proposed Eddington inspired Born Infeld extension of gravity.

Charged and rotating Black AdS Branes in $n+p+2$ dimensions

We generalize the vacuum static black brane solutions of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant recently discussed in literature, by introducing rotations and an electromagnetic field. We investigate numerically the thermodynamical properties of the charged and of the rotating $AdS$ black brane and we provide evidences for the existence of the charged and rotating case. In particular, we study the influence of the rotation and charge on the tension and mass. We find that the rotation essentially influences the tensions while the charge essentially influences the mass.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black strings

We construct uniform black-string solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity for all dimensions $d$ between five and ten and discuss their basic properties. Closed form solutions are found by taking the Gauss-Bonnet term as a perturbation from pure Einstein gravity. Nonperturbative solutions are constructed by solving numerically the equations of the model. The Gregory-Laflamme instability of the black strings is explored via linearized perturbation theory. Our results indicate that new qualitative features occur for $d=6$, in which case stable configurations exist for large enough values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. For other dimensions, the black strings are dynamically unstable and have also a negative specific heat. We argue that this provides an explicit realization of the Gubser-Mitra conjecture, which links local dynamical and thermodynamic stability. Nonuniform black strings in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory are also constructed in six spacetime dimensions.

Charged-spinning-gravitating Q-balls

We consider the lagrangian of a self-interacting complex scalar field admitting generically Q-balls solutions. This model is extended by minimal coupling to electromagnetism and to gravity. A stationnary, axially-symmetric ansatz for the different fields is used in order to reduce the classical equations. The system of non-linear partial differential equations obtained becomes a boundary value problem by supplementing a suitable set of boundary conditions. We obtain numerical evidences that the angular excitations of uncharged Q-balls, which exist in flat space-time, get continuously deformed by the Maxwell and the Einstein terms. The electromagnetic and gravitating properties of several solutions, including the spinning Q-balls, are emphasized.

Non Uniform Black Strings and Critical Dimensions in $AdS_d$

We study the equations of black strings in spacetimes of arbitrary dimensions with a negative cosmological constant and construct numerically non uniform black strings solutions. Our results suggest the existence of a localised black hole in asymptotically locally $AdS$ spacetime. We also present evidences for a dependence of the critical dimension on the horizon radius. The critical dimension represents the dimension where the order of the phase transition between uniform and non uniform black string changes. Finally, we argue that both, the regular asymptotically locally $AdS$ solution and $AdS$ black string solutions with a very small horizon radius, present a negative tension. This turns out to be an unexpected feature of the solutions.

Charged-Rotating Black Holes in Higher-dimensional (A)DS-Gravity

We present numerical evidences for the existence of rotating black hole solutions in d-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant and for $d$ odd. The metric used possesses $(d+1)/2$ Killing vectors and the solutions have $(d-1)/2$ equal angular momenta. A Schwarschild-type coordinate is used for the radial variable and both signs of the cosmological constant are emphasized. Several properties of the solutions are studied, namely their surface gravity, mass and angular momentum as functions of two parameters: the magnetic field and the angular velocity at the horizon. The influence of the electromagnetic field on the domain of existence of the black holes is studied are compared to the vacuum case where analytic solutions are available.

New stable phase of non uniform black strings in ${AdS}_d$

We consider the non uniform $AdS$ black string equations in arbitrary number of dimension in a perturbative approach up to order 2 and in a non perturbative. We restrict the study in the perturbative approach to the backreacting modes, since they provide the first relevant corrections on the thermodynamical quantities of the solutions. We also present some preliminary results in the construction of non-perturbative solutions, in particular, we present a first part of the non uniform - uniform black string phase diagram. Our results suggests the existence of a new stable phase for $AdS$ non uniform black strings, namely long non uniform black string, with the extra direction length of the order of the $AdS$ curvature.

Stability of AdS black strings

We review the recent developements in the stability problem and phase diagram for asymptotically locally $AdS$ black strings. First, we quickly review the case of locally flat black string before turning to the case of locally $AdS$ spacetimes.

Remarks on bell-shaped lumps: stability and fermionic modes

We consider non-topological, "bell-shaped" localized and regular solutions available in some 1+1 dimensional scalar field theories. Several properties of such solutions are studied, namely their stability and the occurence of fermion bound states in the background of a kink and a kink-anti-kink solutions of the sine-Gordon model.

On the stability of AdS black strings

We explore via linearized perturbation theory the Gregory-Laflamme instability of the black string solutions of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant recently discussed in literature. Our results indicate that the black strings whose conformal infinity is the product of time and $S^{d-3}\times S^1$ are stable for large enough values of the event horizon radius. All topological black strings are also classically stable. We argue that this provides an explicit realization of the Gubser-Mitra conjecture.

Charged-rotating black holes and black strings in higher dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a positive cosmological constant

We present arguments for the existence of charged, rotating black holes in $d=2N+1$ dimensions, with $d\geq 5$ with a positive cosmological constant. These solutions posses both, a regular horizon and a cosmological horizon of spherical topology and have $N$ equal-magnitude angular momenta. They approach asymptotically the de Sitter spacetime background. The counterpart equations for $d=2N+2$ are investigated, by assuming that the fields are independant of the extra dimension $y$, leading to black strings solutions. These solutions are regular at the event horizon. The asymptotic form of the metric is not the de Sitter form and exhibit a naked singularity at finite proper distance.

Black strings and solitons in five dimensional space-time with positive cosmological constant

We consider the classical equations of the Einstein-Yang-Mills model in five space-time dimensions and in the presence of a cosmological constant. We assume that the fields do not depend on the extra dimension and that they are spherically symmetric with respect to the three standard space dimensions. The equations are then transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations that we solve numerically. We construct new types of regular (resp. black holes) solutions which, close to the origin (resp. the event horizon) resemble the 4-dimensional gravitating monopole (resp. non abelian black hole) but exhibit an unexpected asymptotic behaviour.

Inflating Brane inside hyper-spherically symmetric defects

Static and inflating brane world models are considered in $4+n$-dimensions with a non zero bulk cosmological constant and with a hyper-spherically symmetric topological defect residing in the $n$ extra dimensions. Several vacuum solutions can be constructed explicitely when the bulk and inflating constants are non zero. We study how these solutions are deformed by the presence of a global monopole for generic values of $n$ and a local monopole for $n=3$. New types of solutions, regular and periodic in the radial variable relative to the extra dimensions, are constructed.
