Transient triplet blockade in Andreev junction

We study the time-dependent triplet configuration, appearing under nonequilibrium conditions in a nanoscopic junction with two quantum dots coupled in series between superconductor and normal metallic lead. We show that in the situation, when both quantum dots are singly occupied by identical spin electrons, the on-dot electron pairing is suppressed what substantially affects the subgap charge transport. We investigate processes in which such configuration can be temporarily encountered, either due to the initial conditions or by imposing the external magnetic field. Our analytical and numerical calculations provide estimations for the temporal scales, characterizing evolution of the triplet configuration which could be manifested in the time-resolved tunneling measurements. Such nonequilibrium features of the triplet configuration might be relevant to operations on superconducting qubits, in their conventional and/or topological realizations.

Subgap dynamics of double quantum dot coupled between superconducting and normal leads

Dynamical processes induced by the external time-dependent fields can provide valuable insight into the characteristic energy scales of a given physical system. We investigate them here in a nanoscopic heterostructure, consisting of the double quantum dot coupled in series to the superconducting and the metallic reservoirs, analyzing its response to (i)~abrupt bias voltage applied across the junction, (ii) sudden change of the energy levels, and imposed by (iii)~their periodic driving. We explore subgap properties of this setup which are strictly related to the in-gap quasiparticles and discuss their signatures manifested in the time-dependent charge currents. The characteristic multi-mode oscillations, their beating patters and photon-assisted harmonics reveal a rich spectrum of dynamical features that might be important for designing the superconducting qubits.

Dynamical leakage of Majorana mode into side-attached quantum dot

We study a hybrid structure, comprising the single-level quantum dot attached to the topological superconducting nanowire, inspecting dynamical transfer of the Majorana quasiparticle onto normal region. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of such heterostructure and its investigation under the stationary conditions [L. Schneider et al., https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-020-18540-3, Nature Communications 11, 4707 (2020)] where the quantum dot energy level can be tuned by gate potential we examine how much time is needed for the Majorana mode to leak into the normal region. We estimate, that for typical hybrid structures this dynamical process would take about 20 nanoseconds. We propose a feasible empirical protocol for its detection by means of the time-resolved Andreev tunneling spectroscopy.

Time-dependent Andreev bound states of a quantum dot coupled to two superconducting leads

Sub-gap transport properties of a quantum dot (QD) coupled to two superconducting and one metallic leads are studied theoretically, solving the time-dependent equation of motion by the Laplace transform technique. We focus on time-dependent response of the system induced by a sudden switching on the QD-leads couplings, studying the influence of initial conditions on the transient currents and the differential conductance. We derive analytical expressions for measurable quantities and find that they oscillate in time with the frequency governed by the QD-superconducting lead coupling and acquire damping, due to relaxation driven by the normal lead. Period of these oscillations increases with the superconducting phase difference $\phi$. In particular, for $\phi=\pi$ the QD occupancy and the normal current evolve monotonically (without any oscillations) to their stationary values. In such case the induced electron pairing vanishes and the superconducting current is completely blocked. We also analyze time-dependent development of the Andreev bound states. We show, that the measurable conductance peaks do not appear immediately after sudden switching of the QD coupling to external leads but it takes some finite time-interval for the system needs create these Andreev states. Such time-delay is mainly controlled by the QD-normal lead coupling.

Fluctuation conductivity due to the preformed local pairs

We investigate the properties of a system where the itinerant electrons coexist and interact with the preformed local pairs. Using the nonperturbative continuous unitary transformation technique we show that Andreev-type scattering between these charge carriers gives rise to the enhanced diamagnetic response and is accompanied by appearance of the Drude peak inside the pseudogap regime \omega <2\Delta_{pg}. Both thes effects are caused above the transition temperature T_c by the short-range superconducting correlations. In fact, the residual diamagnetism has been detected by the torque magnetometry in the lanthanum and bismuth cuprate superconductors at temperatures up to ~ 1.5T_c. In this work we show how the superconducting correlations can be observed in the a.c. and d.c. conductivity.

Interplay between pairing and correlations in spin-polarized bound states

We investigate the single and multiple defects embedded in a superconducting host, studying interplay between the proximity induced pairing and interactions. We explore influence of the spin-orbit coupling on energies, polarization and spatial patterns of the bound (Yu-Shiba-Rusinov) states of magnetic impurities in 2-dimensional square lattice. We also address the peculiar bound states in the proximitized Rashba chain, resembling the Majorana quasiparticles, focusing on their magnetic polarization which has been recently reported by S. Jeon et al., [Science 358, 772 (2017)]. Finally, we study leakage of these polarized Majorana quasiparticles on the side-attached nanoscopic regions and confront them with the subgap Kondo effect near to the singlet-doublet phase transition.

Kondo and Majorana signatures near the singlet-doublet quantum phase transition

We study the low energy spectrum of a correlated quantum dot embedded between the normal conducting and superconducting reservoirs and hybridized with the topological superconducting nanowire, hosting the Majorana end-modes. We investigate the leaking Majorana quasiparticle and inspect its interplay with the proximity induced on-dot pairing and correlations. In particular, we focus on the subgap Kondo effect near the quantum phase transition/crossover from the spinfull (doublet) to the spinless (BCS-type singlet) configurations. Treating the correlations perturbatively and within the NRG approach we study its signatures observable in the Andreev (particle-to-hole conversion) tunneling spectroscopy. We find, that the leaking Majorana mode has a spin-selective influence on the subgap Kondo effect.

Spin-polarized Andreev tunneling through the Rashba chain

We demonstrate that the selective equal spin Andreev reflection (SESAR) spectroscopy can be used in STM experiments to distinguish the zero-energy Majorana quasiparticles from the ordinary fermionic states of the Rashba chain. Such technique, designed for probing the p-wave superconductivity, could be applied to the intersite pairing of equal-spin electrons in the chain of magnetic Fe atoms deposited on the superconducting Pb substrate. Our calculations of the effective pairing amplitude for individual spin components imply the magnetically polarized Andreev conductance, which can be used to `filter' the Majorana quasiparticles from the ordinary in-gap states, although the pure spin current (i.e., perfect polarization) is impossible.

How long does it take to form the Andreev quasiparticles ?

We study transient effects in a setup, where the quantum dot (QD) is abruptly sandwiched between the metallic and superconducting leads. Focusing on the proximity-induced electron pairing, manifested by the in-gap bound states, we determine characteristic time-scale needed for these quasiparticles to develop. In particular, we derive analytic expressions for (i) charge occupancy of the QD, (ii) amplitude of the induced electron pairing, and (iii) the transient currents under equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions. We also investigate the correlation effects within the Hartree-Fock-Bogolubov approximation, revealing a competition between the Coulomb interactions and electron pairing.

Interplay between electron pairing and Dicke effect in triple quantum dots structures

We study the influence of the proximity-induced pairing on electronic version of the Dicke effect in a heterostructure, comprising three quantum dots vertically coupled between the metallic and superconducting leads. We discuss a feasible experimental procedure for detecting the narrow/broad (subradiant/superradiant) contributions by means of the subgap Andreev spectroscopy. In the Kondo regime and for small energy level detuning the Dicke effect is manifested in the differential conductance.

Majorana quasiparticles of inhomogeneous Rashba chain

We investigate the inhomogeneous Rashba chain coupled to a superconducting substrate, hosting the Majorana quasiparticles near its edges. We discuss its subgap spectrum and study how robust are the zero-energy quasiparticles against the diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. Studying the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant we show that disorder induced transition from the topologically non-trivial to trivial phases is manifested by characteristic features in the spatially-resolved quasiparticle spectrum at zero energy. We provide evidence for the non-local nature of the zero-energy Majorana quasiparticles, that are well preserved upon partitioning the chain into separate pieces. Even though the Majorana quasiparticles are not completely immune to inhomogeneity we show that they can spread onto other (normal) nanoscopic objects via the proximity effect.

Spin-resolved interference due to Majorana state on interface between normal and superconducting leads

We investigate the subgap spectrum and transport properties of the quantum dot placed on interface between metallic and superconducting leads and additionally side-coupled to the edge of topological superconducting (TS) chain, hosting the Majorana quasiparticle. Due to chiral nature of the Majorana states only one spin component, say $\uparrow$, of the quantum dot electrons is directly hybridized with the TS wire. We study the spin-selective interferometric patterns driven by the Majorana quasiparticle. The proximity induced on-dot pairing effectively transmits the interference onto both spin components, but each of them is characterized by completely different (even opposite) signatures. To explain their origin we confront our results with the toy model, where TS chain is replaced by the usual quantum and the tunneling of $\downarrow$ electrons is prohibited. We also address unique interplay of the Majorana and Kondo features, both appearing at zero energy.

Cooper pair splitting efficiency in the hybrid three-terminal quantum dot

Nanodevices consisting of a quantum dot tunnel coupled to one superconducting and two normal electrodes may serve as a source of entangled electrons. As a result of crossed Andreev reflection the Cooper pair of s-wave character may be split into two electrons and each of them goes into a distinct normal electrode, preserving entanglement. Efficiency of the process depends on the specific system and is tunable by electric means. Our calculations show that in the studied device this efficiency may attain values as large as $80 \%$.

Quasiparticle states driven by a scattering on the preformed electron pairs

We analyze evolution of the single particle excitation spectrum of the underdoped cuprate superconductors near the anti-nodal region, considering temperatures below and and above the phase transition. We inspect the phenomenological self-energy that reproduces the angle-resolved-photoemission-spectroscopy (ARPES) data and we show that above the critical temperature, such procedure implies a transfer of the spectral weight from the Bogoliubov-type quasiparticles towards the in-gap damped states. We also discuss some possible microscopic arguments explaining this process.

Constructive influence of the induced electron pairing on the Kondo state

Superconductivity and magnetism are usually the conflicting (competing) phenomena. We show, however, that in nanoscopic objects the electron pairing may promote the magnetic ordering. Such situation is possible at low temperatures in the quantum dots placed between the conducting and superconducting reservoirs, where the proximity induced electron pairing cooperates with the correlations enhancing the spin-exchange interactions. The emerging Kondo resonance, which is observable in the Andreev conductance, can be significantly enhanced by the coupling to superconducting lead. We explain this intriguing tendency within the Anderson impurity model using: the generalized Schrieffer-Wolff canonical transformation, the second order perturbative treatment of the Coulomb repulsion, and the nonperturbative numerical renormalization group calculations. We also provide hints for experimental observability of this phenomenon.

Novel non-local effects in three-terminal hybrid devices with quantum dot

We predict strong non-local effects in the three-terminal hybrid device, comprising the quantum dot embedded between two conducting leads and third superconducting reservoir. They result from competition between the ballistic electron transfer and the crossed Andreev scattering. The non-local voltage induced in response to the 'driving' current changes the magnitude and sign upon varying the gate potential and/or coupling to the superconducting lead. Such effect is robust both in the linear and non-linear regimes, where the screening and the long-range interactions play significant role. This novel subgap transport is provided by the Shiba states and can be contrasted with much weaker non-local effects observed hitherto in the three-terminal 'planar' junctions.

Enhancements of Andreev conductance induced by the photon/vibron scattering

We analyze the subgap spectrum and transport properties of the quantum dot embedded between one superconducting and another metallic reservoirs and additionally coupled to an external boson mode. Emission/absorption of the bosonic quanta induces a series of the subgap Andreev states, that eventually interfere with each other. We discuss their signatures in the differential conductance both, for the linear and nonlinear regimes.

Kondo impurity between superconducting and metallic reservoir: the flow equation approach

It is well established that a correlated quantum impurity embedded in a metallic host can form the many-body Kondo state with itinerant electrons due to the effective antiferromagnetic coupling. Such effect is manifested spectroscopically by a narrow Abrikosov-Suhl peak appearing at the Fermi level below a characteristic temperature T_K. Recent experiments using nanoscopic heterojunctions where the correlated quantum impurities (dots) are coupled to superconducting reservoirs revealed that the Kondo-type correlations are substantially weaker because: i) the single-particle states of superconductors are depleted around the Fermi level and ii) the on-dot pairing (proximity effect) competes with the spin ordering. Within the Anderson impurity scenario we study here influence of such induced on-dot paring on the exchange interaction adopting the continuous unitary transformation, which goes beyond the perturbative framework. Our analytical and numerical results show strong detrimental influence of the electron pairing on the effective antiferromagnetic coupling thereby suppressing the Kondo temperature in agreement with the experimental observations.
