I describe the recent measurement of the CP violating parameter $\sin 2 ϕ_1 =(0.99\pm 0.14\pm 0.05)$ from the Belle experiment at KEK.
We review recent progress at the two $e^+ e^-$ B factories. The first measurement of CP violation and the prospects for measuring all the angles of the unitarity triangle are discussed.
We report results of a search for $B\toτν$ in a sample of 9.7 million charged $B$ meson decays. The search uses both $πν$ and $\ellν\barν$ decay modes of the $τ$, and demands exclusive reconstruction of the companion $\bar B$ decay to suppress background. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction ${\cal B}(B\to τν) < 8.4\times 10^{-4}$ at 90% confidence level. With slight modification to the analysis we also establish ${\cal B}(B^\pm\to K^\pmν\barν) < 2.4\times 10^{-4}$ at 90% confidence level.
We consider the possibility of measuring both $\sin (2 β)$ and $\cos (2 β)$ in the KM unitarity triangle using the process $B^0 \to D^{*+}D^{*-}K_s$. This decay mode has a higher branching fraction (O(1%)) than the mode $B^0 \to D^{*+}D^{*-}$. We use the factorization assumption and heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory to estimate the branching fraction and polarization. The time dependent rate for $B^0(t) \to D^{*+} D^{*-} K_s$ can be used to measure $\sin (2 β)$ and $\cos(2 β)$ . Furthermore, examination of the $D^{*+} K_s$ mass spectrum may be the best way to experimentally find the broad $1^+$ p-wave $D_s$ meson.
Using the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider, we have measured the structure functions in the decay tau+/- --> pi+/- pi0 pi0 nu, based on a sample corresponding to 4*10E6 produced tau-pair events. We determine the integrated structure functions, which depend only on the three pion invariant mass, as well as the structure functions differential in the Dalitz plot. We extract model independent limits on non-axial-vector contributions from the measured structure functions as less than 16.6% of the total branching fraction, at the 95% confidence level. Separating the non-axial-vector contributions into scalar and vector contributions, we measure that scalars (vectors) contribute with less than 9.4% (7.3%) to the total branching ratio, at the 95% confidence level.
We consider the possibility of observing CP violation in quasi-inclusive decays of the type $B^-\to K^- X$, $B^-\to K^{*-} X$, $\bar B^0\to K^- X$ and $\bar B^0\to K^{*-} X$, where $X$ does not contain strange quarks. We present estimates of rates and asymmetries for these decays in the Standard Model and comment on the experimental feasibility of observing CP violation in these decays at future $B$ factories. We find the rate asymmetries can be quite sizeable.
We report the first observation of $B\to η' X$ transitions with high momentum $η'$ mesons. We observe $39.0\pm 11.6$ B decay events with $2.0< p_{η'} < 2.7$ GeV/c, the high momentum region where background from $b\to c$ processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to $b\to s g^*$ transitions. Given that interpretation, we find ${\cal B}(B\to η' X_s) = (6.2 \pm 1.6(stat) \pm 1.3(sys)^{+0.0}_{-1.5}(bkg))\times 10^{-4} $ for $2.0<p_{η'}<2.7$ GeV/c.

We review recent experimental results from CLEO and LEP experiments on hadronic decays of hadrons containing $b$ quarks. We discuss charm counting and the semileptonic branching fraction in $B$ decays and the color suppressed amplitude in $B$ decay. (to appear in the Proceedings of 1997 Heavy Flavors Conference in Santa Barbara)
We review recent experimental results on hadronic decays and lifetimes of hadrons containing b and c quarks. We discuss charm counting and the semileptonic branching fraction in B decays, the color suppressed amplitude in B decay, and the search for gluonic penguins in B decay.
We review recent experimental results on hadronic decays and lifetimes of hadrons containing b and c quarks. We discuss charm counting and the semileptonic branching fraction in B decays, the color suppressed amplitude in B and D decay, and the search for gluonic penguins in B decay.
We review recent experimental results on lifetimes and hadronic decays of hadrons that contain $c$ and $b$ quarks. The theoretical implications of these results are also considered. An understanding of hadronic decays of heavy quarks is required to interpret the CP violating asymmetries in $B$ decays that will be observed in experiments planned for the near future.
This paper summarizes two experimental issues in the study of particle antiparticle mixing. We propose a new method to extract the ratio $|V_{ts}/V_{td}|^2$ from a measurement of $ΔΓ/Γ$ for the $B_s$ meson. This method is experimentally more sensitive than the conventional method for large values of $|V_{ts}|$ but depends on the accuracy of parton level calculations. We then briefly discuss the implications of large CP violation and final state interactions (FSI) in the experimental search for $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing. The work described here was carried out in collaboration with S. Pakvasa.
We argue that an experimental search for an $η_c'$, the first radial excitation of the $η_c(2980)$, may be carried out using the two photon process $e^+e^- \to e^+e^- γγ\ra e^+e^-η_c'$. We estimate the partial width $Γ_{γγ}(η_c')$ and the branching fraction $B(η_c' \to h)$, where $h$ is an exclusive hadronic channel, and find that for $h = K^o_s K^\pm π^\mp$ it may be possible to observe this state in two photon collisions at CLEO-II.
We discuss the implications of CP violation as well as final state interaction phases in the experimental search for $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing. At the present level of sensitivity, these are not yet a significant systematic experimental limitation.
We review recent results on rare and hadronic B decays from the CLEO, CDF and LEP experiments.
