Neutron Scattering Studies of Heavy Fermion Systems

We review the results of recent studies of the elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from a variety of heavy fermion compounds. This class of materials exhibits a rich variety of ground states: antiferromagnetically ordered, superconducting, semiconducting, and paramagnetic. Neutron scattering from single crystals and powders has been a productive tool for probing the magnetic order and fluctuations in all four cases. This review deals with work on UPt_3, UPd_2Al_3, UNi_2Al_3, UNi_4B, CeNiSn, Y_{1-x}U_xPd_3, and UCu_{5-x}Pd_x.

Magnetic correlations in deuteronium jarosite, a model S=5/2 Kagome antiferromagnet

Deuteronium jarosite, (D_3O)Fe_3(SO_4)_2(OD)_6, contains a kagome lattice of Heisenberg spins, S=5/2, with a coverage of 97+-1%. DC and AC susceptibility measurements show strong in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange (θ_CW=-1500+-300K) and a spin-glass transition at T_f=13.8 K, while the magnetic contribution to the specific heat below T_f rises with T as T^2, characteristic of two-dimensional propagating modes. Powder neutron diffraction reveals short-range magnetic correlations (\xsi=19+-2 Å) with a wavevector corresponding to the \sqrt{3}x\sqrt{3} spin structure at 1.9 K.

Influence of a magnetic field on the antiferromagnetic order in UPt_3

A neutron diffraction experiment was performed to investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3. Our results show that a field in the basal plane of up to 3.2 Tesla, higher than H_c2(0), has no effect: it can neither select a domain nor rotate the moment. This has a direct impact on current theories for the superconducting phase diagram based on a coupling to the magnetic order.
