Isospin Violation in Pion-Nucleon Scattering at Threshold

We discuss the electromagnetic corrections to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths generated by minimal e. m. coupling from a knowledge of the low energy expansion of the pion-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude as well as from the nucleon and delta pole terms, all a consequence of purely strong interactions. We assume the heavy baryon limit; the e.m. and axial form factors and the masses are used with their empirical values, such that there is no free parameter. The different terms have a clear physical and intuitive origin. In particular, a large isospin breaking contribution to the isoscalar term appears for the elastic charged-pion scattering lengths. We attempt a comparison to the results from chiral effective field theory (EFT) with a physical interpretation of the empirical constants in that approach. The results are applied to the energy shift and width of pionic hydrogen.

Isospin breaking in pion-nucleon scattering at threshold by radiative processes

We investigate the dispersive contribution by radiative processes such as (pi- proton to neutron gamma) and (pi- proton to Delta gamma) to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths of charged pions in the heavy baryon limit. They give a large isospin violating contribution in the corresponding isoscalar scattering length, but only a small violation in the isovector one. These terms contribute 6.3(3)% to the 1s level shift of pionic hydrogen and give a chiral constant F_pi^2f_1=-25.8(8) MeV.

A phenomenological determination of the pion-nucleon scattering lengths from pionic hydrogen

A model independent expression for the electromagnetic corrections to a phenomenological hadronic pion-nucleon scattering length, extracted from pionic hydrogen, is obtained. In a non-relativistic approach and using an extended charge distribution, these corrections are derived up to terms of order (alpha)**2 log(alpha) in the limit of a short-range hadronic interaction. We infer a charged pion-proton scattering length of 0.0870(5) in units of inverse pion mass, which gives for the charged pion-proton-neutron coupling, through the GMO relation, a value of 14.04(17).

A phenomenological negatively charged pion-proton scattering length from pionic hydrogen

We derive a closed, model independent, expression for the electromagnetic correction factor to a phenomenological hadronic scattering length extracted from a hydrogenic atom. It is obtained in a non-relativistic approach and in the limit of a short ranged hadronic interaction to terms of order ((alpha)**2)(log(alpha)) using an extended charge distribution. A hadronic negatively charged pion-proton scattering length of 0.0870(5), in units of inverse charged pion-mass, is deduced, leading to a pion-nucleon coupling constant from the GMO relation equals to 14.04(17).

Determination of the pion-nucleon coupling constant and scattering lengths

We critically evaluate the isovector GMO sum rule for forward pion-nucleon scattering using the recent precision measurements of negatively charged pion-proton and pion-deuteron scattering lengths from pionic atoms. We deduce the charged-pion-nucleon coupling constant, with careful attention to systematic and statistical uncertainties. This determination gives, directly from data a pseudoscalar coupling constant of 14.11+-0.05(statistical)+-0.19(systematic) or a pseudovector one of 0.0783(11). This value is intermediate between that of indirect methods and the direct determination from backward neutron-proton differential scattering cross sections. We also use the pionic atom data to deduce the coherent symmetric and antisymmetric sums of the negatively charged pion-proton and pion-neutron scattering lengths with high precision. The symmetric sum gives 0.0012+-0.0002(statistical)+-0.0008 (systematic) and the antisymmetric one 0.0895+-0.0003(statistical)+-0.0013(systematic), both in units of inverse charged pion-mass. For the need of the present analysis, we improve the theoretical description of the pion-deuteron scattering length.

How precisely can the difference method determine the pion-nucleon coupling constant?

The Coulomb-like backward peak of the neutron-proton scattering differential cross section is due to one-pion exchange. Extrapolation to the pion pole of precise data should allow to obtain the value of the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant. This was classically attempted by the use of a smooth physical function, the Chew function, built from the cross section. To improve accuracy of such an extrapolation one has introduced a difference method. It consists of extrapolating the difference between the Chew function based on experimental data and that built from a model where the pion-nucleon coupling is exactly known. Here we cross-check to which precision can work this novel extrapolation method by applying it to differences between models and between data and models. With good reference models and for the 162 MeV neutron-proton Uppsala single energy precise data with a normalisation error of 2.3 %, the value of the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant is obtained with an accuracy close to 1.8 %.

How precisely can we determine the pion-nucleon coupling constant from the isovector GMO sum rule?

The isovector GMO sum rule for zero energy forward pion-nucleon scattering is critically studied to obtain the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant using the precise negatively charged pion-proton and pion-deuteron scattering lengths deduced recently from pionic atom experiments. This direct determination leads to a pseudoscalar charged pion-nucleon coupling constant of 14.23 +- 0.09 (statistic) +- 0.17 (systematic). We obtain also accurate values for the pion-nucleon scattering lengths.

Precision determination of the pi-N scattering lengths and the charged pi-NN coupling constant

We critically evaluate the isovector GMO sumrule for the charged $πN N$ coupling constant using recent precision data from $π^-$p and $π^-$d atoms and with careful attention to systematic errors. From the $π^-$d scattering length we deduce the pion-proton scattering lengths ${1/2}(a_{π^-p}+a_{π^-n})=(-20\pm 6$(statistic)$ \pm 10$ (systematic))~$\cdot 10^{-4}m_{π_c}^{-1}$ and ${1/2}(a_{π^-p}-a_{π^-n})=(903 \pm 14)\cdot 10^{-4}m_{π_c}^{-1}$. From this a direct evaluation gives $g^2_c(GMO)/4π=14.20\pm 0.07$(statistic)$\pm 0.13$(systematic) or $f^2_c/4π= 0.0786\pm 0.0008$.

Precise strength of th piNN coupling constant

We report here a preliminary value for the piNN coupling constant deduced from the GMO sumrule for forward piN scattering. As in our previous determination from np backward differential scattering cross sections we give a critical discussion of the analysis with careful attention not only to the statistical, but also to the systematic uncertainties. Our preliminary evaluation gives $g^2_c$(GMO) = 13.99(24).

The Pion-Nucleon coupling constant from np charge exchange scattering

A novel extrapolation method has been used to deduce the charged Pion-Nucleon coupling constant from backward $np$ differential scattering cross sections. We applied it to new measurements performed at 162 MeV at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala. In the angular range $150^\circ-180^\circ$, the carefully normalized data are steeper than those of most previous measurements. The extracted value, $g^2_{π^\pm} = 14.52 \pm 0.26$, in good agreement with the classical value, is higher than those determined in recent nucleon-nucleon partial-wave analyses.

Systematic effects in the determination of the piNN Coupling from pbar p -> nbar n differential cross section

We show that the $πNN$ coupling constant extracted model-independently from $\bar pp$ charge exchange is subject to a systematic correction, and, more importantly, that the strong absorption in the critical region prevents a determination of the coupling constant to high precision using this process. This attenuates the possible conflict with the value determined from the np charge exchange cross sections.
