Impact of the ground-state $4f$ symmetry for anisotropic $cf$-hybridization in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$

We report the ground-state symmetry of the Ce $4f$ states in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, yielding anisotropic $cf$-hybridization between the Ce $4f$ states and conducting electrons. By analyzing linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption and core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectra, the $4f$ symmetry is determined as $\Sigma$-type $\Gamma_{7}$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge $4p$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$.

CeCu_2Ge_2: Challenging our Understanding of Quantum Criticality

Here, we unveil evidence for a quantum phase-transition in CeCu_2Ge_2 which displays both an incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) ground-state, and a strong renormalization of the quasiparticle effective masses (mu) due to the Kondo-effect. For all angles theta between an external magnetic field (H) and the crystallographic c-axis, the application of H leads to the suppression of the SDW-state through a 2^nd-order phase-transition at a theta-dependent critical-field H_p(theta) leading to the observation of small Fermi surfaces (FSs) in the paramagnetic (PM) state. For H || c-axis, these FSs are characterized by light mu's pointing also to the suppression of the Kondo-effect at H_p with surprisingly, no experimental evidence for quantum-criticality (QC). But as $H$ is rotated towards the a-axis, these mu's increase considerably becoming undetectable for θ> 56^0 between H and the c-axis. Around H_p^a~ 30 T the resistivity becomes proportional T which, coupled to the divergence of mu, indicates the existence of a field-induced QC-point at H_p^a(T=0 K). This observation, suggesting FS hot-spots associated with the SDW nesting-vector, is at odds with current QC scenarios for which the continuous suppression of all relevant energy scales at H_p(theta,T) should lead to a line of quantum-critical points in the H-theta plane. Finally, we show that the complexity of its magnetic phase-diagram(s) makes CeCu_2Ge_2 an ideal system to explore field-induced quantum tricritical and QC end-points.

Laboratory Studies on the Removal of Radon-Born Lead from KamLAND's Organic Liquid Scintillator

The removal of radioactivity from liquid scintillator has been studied in preparation of a low background phase of KamLAND. This paper describes the methods and techniques developed to measure and efficiently extract radon decay products from liquid scintillator. We report the radio-isotope reduction factors obtained when applying various extraction methods. During this study, distillation was identified as the most efficient method for removing radon daughters from liquid scintillator.

Suppression of f-Electron Itinerancy in CeRu2Si2 by a Strong Magnetic Field

The valence state of Ce in a canonical heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy at 1.8 K in high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. The valence was slightly larger than for the pure trivalent state (Ce3+: f1), as expected in heavy fermion compounds, and it decreased toward the trivalent state as the magnetic field was increased. The field-induced valence reduction indicates that the itinerant character of the 4f electrons in CeRu2Si2 was suppressed by a strong magnetic field. The suppression was gradual and showed characteristic magnetic field dependence, which reflects the metamagnetism around Hm \sim 8 T. The itinerant character persisted, even at 40 T (\sim 5Hm), suggesting that the Kondo bound state is continuously broken by magnetic fields and that it should completely collapse at fields exceeding 200 T.

Pressure Evolution of a Field Induced Fermi Surface Reconstruction and of the Neel Critical Field in CeIn3

We report high-pressure skin depth measurements on the heavy fermion material CeIn3 in magnetic fields up to 64 T using a self-resonant tank circuit based on a tunnel diode oscillator. At ambient pressure, an anomaly in the skin depth is seen at 45 T. The field where this anomaly occurs decreases with applied pressure until approximately 1.0 GPa, where it begins to increase before merging with the antiferromagnetic phase boundary. Possible origins for this transport anomaly are explored in terms of a Fermi surface reconstruction. The critical magnetic field at which the Neel ordered phase is suppressed is also mapped as a function of pressure and extrapolates to the previous ambient pressure measurements at high magnetic fields and high pressure measurements at zero magnetic field.

Heavy holes: precursor to superconductivity in antiferromagnetic CeIn3

Numerous phenomenological parallels have been drawn between f- and d- electron systems in an attempt to understand their display of unconventional superconductivity. The microscopics of how electrons evolve from participation in large moment antiferromagnetism to superconductivity in these systems, however, remains a mystery. Knowing the origin of Cooper paired electrons in momentum space is a crucial prerequisite for understanding the pairing mechanism. Of especial interest are pressure-induced superconductors CeIn3 and CeRhIn5 in which disparate magnetic and superconducting orders apparently coexist - arising from within the same f-electron degrees of freedom. Here we present ambient pressure quantum oscillation measurements on CeIn3 that crucially identify the electronic structure - potentially similar to high temperature superconductors. Heavy pockets of f-character are revealed in CeIn3, undergoing an unexpected effective mass divergence well before the antiferromagnetic critical field. We thus uncover the softening of a branch of quasiparticle excitations located away from the traditional spin-fluctuation dominated antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. The observed Fermi surface of dispersive f-electrons in CeIn3 could potentially explain the emergence of Cooper pairs from within a strong moment antiferromagnet.

Fermi surface of CeIn3 above the Neel critical field

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in CeIn3 in magnetic fields extending to ~90 T, well above the Ne'el critical field of Hc ~61 T. The unreconstructed Fermi surface a-sheet is observed in the high magnetic field polarized paramagnetic limit, but with its effective mass and Fermi surface volume strongly reduced in size compared to that observed in the low magnetic field paramagnetic regime under pressure. The spheroidal topology of this sheet provides an ideal realization of the transformation from a `large Fermi surface' accommodating f-electrons to a `small Fermi surface' when the f-electron moments become polarized.

Universal scaling in the dynamical conductivity of heavy fermion Ce and Yb compounds

Dynamical conductivity spectra s(w) have been measured for a diverse range of heavy-fermion (HF) Ce and Yb compounds. A characteristic excitation peak has been observed in the mid-infrared region of s(w) for all the compounds, and has been analyzed in terms of a simple model based on conduction (c)-f electron hybridized band. A universal scaling is found between the observed peak energies and the estimated c-f hybridization strengths of these HF compounds. This scaling demonstrates that the model of c-f hybridized band can generally and quantitatively describe the charge excitation spectra of a wide range of HF compounds.

Infrared study of valence transition compound YbInCu4 using cleaved surfaces

Optical reflectivity R(w) of YbInCu4 single crystals has been measured across its first-order valence transition at T_v ~ 42 K, using both polished and cleaved surfaces. R(w) measured on cleaved surfaces Rc(w) was found much lower than that on polished surface Rp(w) over the entire infrared region. Upon cooling through T_v, Rc(w) showed a rapid change over a temperature range of less than 2 K, and showed only minor changes with further cooling. In contrast, Rp(w) showed much more gradual and continuous changes across T_v, similarly to previously reported data on polished surfaces. The present result on cleaved surfaces demonstrates that the microscopic electronic structures of YbInCu4 observed with infrared spectroscopy indeed undergo a sudden change upon the valence transition. The gradual temperature-evolution of Rp(w) is most likely due to the compositional and/or Yb-In site disorders caused by polishing.

Pseudogap Formation and Heavy Carrier Dynamics in Intermediate Valence YbAl3

Infrared optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] of the intermediate valence compound YbAl$_3$ has been measured at temperatures 8 K $\leq T \leq$ 690 K to study its microscopic electronic structures. Despite the highly metallic characters of YbAl$_3$, $σ(ω)$ exhibits a clear pseudogap (strong depletion of spectral weight) of about 60 meV below 40 K. It also shows a strong mid-infrared peak centered at $\sim$ 0.25 eV. Energy-dependent effective mass and scattering rate of the carriers obtained from the data indicate the formation of a heavy-mass Fermi liquid state. These characteristic results are discussed in terms of the hybridization states between the Yb 4$f$ and the conduction electrons. It is argued, in particular, that the pseudogap and the mid-infrared peak result from the indirect and the direct gaps, respectively, within the hybridization state. band.

Field dependent effective masses in YbAl$_{3}$

We show for the intermediate valence compound YbAl$_{3}$ that the high field (40 $\lesssim B \lesssim$ 60T) effective masses measured by the de Haas-van Alphen experiment for field along the $<111>$ direction are smaller by approximately a factor of two than the low field masses. The field $B^{*} \sim$ 40T for this reduction is much smaller than the Kondo field $B_{K} \sim k_{B}T_{K}/μ_{B}$ ($T_{K}\sim$ 670K) but is comparable to the field $k_{B}T_{coh}/μ_{B}$ where $T_{coh}\sim$ 40K is the temperature for the onset of Fermi liquid coherence. This suggests that the field scale $B^{*}$ does not arise from 4$f$ polarization but is connected with the removal of the anomalies that are known to occur in the Fermi liquid state of this compound.

Two energy scales and slow crossover in YbAl3

Experimental results for the susceptibility, specific heat, 4f occupation number, Hall effect and magnetoresistance for single crystals of YbAl$_{3}$ show that, in addition to the Kondo energy scale $k_{B}T_{K}$ $% \sim $ 670K, there is a low temperature scale $T_{coh}<50$K for the onset of coherence. Furthermore the crossover from the low temperature Fermi liquid regime to the high temperature local moment regime is slower than predicted by the Anderson impurity model. These effects may reflect the behavior of the Anderson Lattice in the limit of low conduction electron density.

Regularization Ambiguity Problem for the Chern-Simons Shift

We consider the Chern-Simons parameter shift with the hybrid regularization consisting of the higher covariant derivative (HCD) and the Pauli-Villars (PV) regulators. We show that the shift is closely related to the parity of the regulators and get the shift and no-shift results by a suitable choice of the PV regulators. A naive treatment of the HCD term leads incorrect value of the shift.

Multicritical Points in a Lattice Yukawa Model with the Wilson-Yukawa Coupling

For a lattice regularized chiral-invariant $SU(2)_L\times~SU(2)_R$ fermion-scalar model with a Yukawa coupling $y$ and a Wilson-Yukawa coupling $w$, we investigate the phase structure and in particular show the existence of the multicritical line, in the strong Yukawa and/or Wilson Yukawa coupling region, at which four phases meet. The result is in good agreement with the Monte Carlo simulation. This analytical result is derived from the effective scalar model obtained by integrating out the fermion field where the action is explicitly obtained from the hopping parameter expansion up to next-to-leading order. For estimates on the correlation function of the scalar field we apply the mean-field method.
