Second-order moment equivalence of twisted Gaussian Schell model beams and orbital angular momentum eigenmodes

We show that the covariance matrix of any cylindrically symmetric coherent orbital angular momentum (OAM) eigenmode with quantum number $\ell$ takes a universal form depending only on $\langle r^2\rangle$, $\langle k_r^2\rangle$, and $\ell$, independently of the radial profile, and that this form is identical to the covariance matrix of a twisted Gaussian Schell-model (TGSM) beam.} More specifically, both matrices share the same pattern of zero and nonzero entries, with the off-diagonal blocks proportional to $\ell$ and the TGSM twist parameter $u$, respectively. This result holds for an arbitrary radial profile and provides direct term-by-term identification of parameters between the two sets of beams. We work out the correspondence in detail for three important families: Laguerre--Gaussian (LG), Bessel--Gaussian, and perfect vortex beams (PVBs), and derive the conditions under which each coherent OAM mode maps onto a physically realizable TGSM beam. {Because the covariance matrix governs second-moment evolution under arbitrary ABCD (symplectic) transformations, any two beams sharing the same covariance matrix are second-order indistinguishable at every propagation plane. In particular, the matched TGSM and coherent OAM beams share identical beam-width evolution, far-field divergence, and $M^2$ beam-quality factor.} In particular, the well-developed TGSM propagation toolbox applies directly to the second-order moment evolution of the three coherent families. We further show that within each beam family the covariance matrix uniquely determines the beam parameters, with exact uniqueness established for LG modes. Additional results include cross-family second-moment equivalence conditions and a proof that PVB modes form a complete orthonormal basis in the limit $w\to 0$.

The young exoplanetary system TOI-4562: Confirming the presence of a third body in the system

Young planetary systems represent an opportunity to investigate the early stages of (exo)planetary formation because the gravitational interactions have not yet significantly changed the initial configuration of the system. TOI-4562 b is a highly eccentric temperate Jupiter analogue orbiting a young F7V-type star of $<700$ Myr in age with an orbital period of $P_{orb} \sim 225$ days and an eccentricity of $e=0.76$, and is one of the largest known exoplanets to have formed in situ. We observed a new transit of TOI-4562 b using the 0.6-m Zeiss telescope at the Pico dos Dias Observatory (OPD/LNA) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and combine our data with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and archive data, with the aim being to improve the ephemerides of this interesting system. The $O-C$ diagram for the new ephemeris is consistent with the presence of a giant planet in an outer orbit around TOI-4562. TOI-4562 c is a planet with a mass of $M=5.77 M_{Jup}$, an orbital period of $P_{orb}= 3990$ days, and a semi-major axis of $a = 5.219$ AU. We report the discovery of TOI-4562 c, the exoplanet with the longest orbital period discovered to date via the transit timing variation (TTV) method. The TOI-4562 system is in the process of violent evolution with intense dynamical changes - judging by its young age and high eccentricity - and is therefore a prime target for studies of formation and evolution of planetary systems.

The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea eXtended (VVVX) ESO public survey: Completion of the observations and legacy

The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST.

The N5K Challenge: Non-Limber Integration for LSST Cosmology

The rapidly increasing statistical power of cosmological imaging surveys requires us to reassess the regime of validity for various approximations that accelerate the calculation of relevant theoretical predictions. In this paper, we present the results of the 'N5K non-Limber integration challenge', the goal of which was to quantify the performance of different approaches to calculating the angular power spectrum of galaxy number counts and cosmic shear data without invoking the so-called 'Limber approximation', in the context of the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We quantify the performance, in terms of accuracy and speed, of three non-Limber implementations: ${\tt FKEM (CosmoLike)}$, ${\tt Levin}$, and ${\tt matter}$, themselves based on different integration schemes and approximations. We find that in the challenge's fiducial 3x2pt LSST Year 10 scenario, ${\tt FKEM (CosmoLike)}$ produces the fastest run time within the required accuracy by a considerable margin, positioning it favourably for use in Bayesian parameter inference. This method, however, requires further development and testing to extend its use to certain analysis scenarios, particularly those involving a scale-dependent growth rate. For this and other reasons discussed herein, alternative approaches such as ${\tt matter}$ and ${\tt Levin}$ may be necessary for a full exploration of parameter space. We also find that the usual first-order Limber approximation is insufficiently accurate for LSST Year 10 3x2pt analysis on $\ell=200-1000$, whereas invoking the second-order Limber approximation on these scales (with a full non-Limber method at smaller $\ell$) does suffice.

Relationship between A-site Cation and Magnetic Structure in 3d-5d-4f Double Perovskite Iridates Ln2NiIrO6 (Ln=La, Pr, Nd)

We report a comprehensive investigation of Ln2NiIrO6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) using thermodynamic and transport properties, neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the role of A-site cations on the magnetic interactions in this family of hybrid 3d-5d-4f compositions. Magnetic structure determination using neutron diffraction reveals antiferromagnetism for La2NiIrO6, a collinear ferrimagnetic Ni/Ir state that is driven to long range antiferromagnetism upon the onset of Nd ordering in Nd2NiIrO6, and a non-collinear ferrimagnetic Ni/Ir sublattice interpenetrated by a ferromagnetic Pr lattice for Pr2NiIrO6. For Pr2NiIrO6 heat capacity results reveal the presence of two independent magnetic sublattices and transport resistivity indicates insulating behavior and a conduction pathway that is thermally mediated. First principles DFT calculation elucidates the existence of the two independent magnetic sublattices within Pr2NiIrO6 and offers insight into the behavior in La2NiIrO6 and Nd2NiIrO6. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is consistent with spin-orbit coupling splitting the t2g manifold of octahedral Ir4+ into a Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 state for all members of the series considered.

Interaction in the dark sector: a Bayesian analysis with latest observations

By combining cosmological probes at low, intermediate and high redshifts, we investigate the observational viability of a class of models with interaction in the dark sector. We perform a Bayesian analysis using the latest data sets of type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, the angular acoustic scale of the cosmic microwave background, and measurements of the expansion rate. When combined with the current measurement of the local expansion rate obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we find that these observations provide evidence in favour of interacting models with respect to the standard cosmology.
