New air fluorescence detectors employed in the Telescope Array experiment

Since 2007, the Telescope Array (TA) experiment, based in Utah, USA, has been observing ultra high energy cosmic rays to understand their origins. The experiment involves a surface detector (SD) array and three fluorescence detector (FD) stations. FD stations, installed surrounding the SD array, measure the air fluorescence light emitted from extensive air showers (EASs) for precise determination of their energies and species. The detectors employed at one of the three FD stations were relocated from the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment. At the other two stations, newly designed detectors were constructed for the TA experiment. An FD consists of a primary mirror and a camera equipped with photomultiplier tubes. To obtain the EAS parameters with high accuracies, understanding the FD optical characteristics is important. In this paper, we report the characteristics and installation of new FDs and the performances of the FD components. The results of the monitored mirror reflectance during the observation time are also described in this report.

Ly alpha emissters at z=6.5 in the SSA22 field: An area more neutral or void at the end of the reionization epoch

We present results of a survey of Lyman $α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=6.5$ which is thought to be the final epoch of the cosmic reionization. In a $\approx530$ arcmin$^2$ deep image of the SSA22 field taken through a narrowband filter NB912 installed in the Subaru/Suprime-Cam, we have found only 14 LAE candidates with $L_{\rm Lyα}\ga3\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Even applying the same colour selection criteria, the number density of the LAE candidates is a factor of 3 smaller than that found at the same redshift in the Subaru Deep field (SDF). Assuming the number density in the SDF is a cosmic average, the probability to have a number density equal to or smaller than that found in the SSA22 field is only 7% if we consider fluctuation by the large-scale structure (i.e. cosmic variance) and Poisson error. Therefore, the SSA22 field may be a rare void at $z=6.5$. On the other hand, we have found that the number density of $i'$-drop galaxies with $25.5<z'<26.0$ in the SSA22 field agrees well with that in the SDF. If we consider a scenario that a larger neutral fraction of intergalactic hydrogen, $x_{\rm HI}$, in the SSA22 field obscures a part of Ly$α$ emission, $x_{\rm HI}$ in the SSA22 field should be about 2 times larger than that in the SDF. This can be translated into $x_{\rm HI}<0.9$ at $z=6.5$ in the SSA22 field. A much larger survey area than previous ones is required to overcome a large fluctuation reported here and to obtain a robust constraint on $x_{\rm HI}$ at the end of the reionization from LAEs.

The Subaru Ly-alpha blob survey: A sample of 100 kpc Ly-alpha blobs at z=3

We present results of a survey for giant Ly-alpha nebulae (LABs) at z=3 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam. We obtained Ly-alpha imaging at z=3.09+-0.03 around the SSA22 protocluster and in several blank fields. The total survey area is 2.1 square degrees, corresponding to a comoving volume of 1.6 x 10^6 Mpc^3. Using a uniform detection threshold of 1.4 x 10^{-18} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} arcsec^{-2} for the Ly-alpha images, we construct a sample of 14 LAB candidates with major-axis diameters larger than 100 kpc, including five previously known blobs and two known quasars. This survey triples the number of known LABs over 100 kpc. The giant LAB sample shows a possible "morphology-density relation": filamentary LABs reside in average density environments as derived from compact Ly-alpha emitters, while circular LABs reside in both average density and overdense environments. Although it is hard to examine the formation mechanisms of LABs only from the Ly-alpha morphologies, more filamentary LABs may relate to cold gas accretion from the surrounding inter-galactic medium (IGM) and more circular LABs may relate to large-scale gas outflows, which are driven by intense starbursts and/or by AGN activities. Our survey highlights the potential usefulness of giant LABs to investigate the interactions between galaxies and the surrounding IGM from the field to overdense environments at high-redshift.

Evolution of the electronic structure from the insulator to the superconductor in Bi2Sr2-xLax(Ca,Y)Cu2O8+d

La-doped and Y-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) compounds Bi2Sr2-xLax(Ca,Y)Cu2O8+d, which range from the insulator to the deeply underdoped superconductor, have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have observed that the lower Hubbard band (LHB) of the parent insulator is gradually shifted upward with doping without significantly changing the band dispersions, which implies a downward shift of the chemical potential with hole doping. This behaviour is analogous to Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d (Bi2201) and Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 (Na-CCOC) but is different from La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO), where the LHB stays well below the chemical potential and does not move while its intensity quickly diminishes in the underdoped region.

A search for galaxies in and around an HI overdense region at z=5

We present the discovery of a large-scale structure of emission-line galaxies at redshift z=4.86 behind a massive cluster of galaxies, A1689. Previous spectroscopic observations of a galaxy, A1689-7.1 at z=4.87, near this structure, revealed a possible overdense region of inter-galactic medium (IGM) around the galaxy, which extends at least ~80 comoving Mpc along the line of sight. In order to investigate whether this z~5 IGM overdense region contains a galaxy overdensity, we undertook narrow- and broad-band imaging observations around A1689-7.1 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam. We detected 51 candidate Ly-alpha emitters at redshift z=4.86+-0.03 in the 32 x 24 arcmin^2 field of view. After correction for lensing by the foreground cluster, we found a large-scale (~20 x 60 comoving Mpc) overdense region of galaxies around A1689-7.1 in the source plane at z=4.86. The densest peak in this region has an overdensity of delta~4, suggesting that this structure is probably a good candidate for a protocluster. A1689-7.1 is located at the edge of this region, where the local galaxy density is ~1.6 times the mean density and is close to the density contrast in the IGM along the line of sight to A1689-7.1 estimated from the optical depth. The overdensities of galaxies we have found may suggest that at least some parts of the IGM overdense region have already started to form galaxies and moreover they relate to the formation of a protocluster. Although we lack information on the three dimensional distributions of both IGM and galaxy overdense regions, the similarity of the scales of both regions may suggest that the two are parts of a single large-scale structure, which would be an large edge-on sheet along the line of sight with a size of ~20 x 60 x 80 comoving Mpc.

A momentum-dependent perspective on quasiparticle interference in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}

Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) probes the momentum-space electronic structure of materials, and provides invaluable information about the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Likewise, the cuprate real-space, inhomogeneous electronic structure is elucidated by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS). Recently, STS has exploited quasiparticle interference (QPI) - wave-like electrons scattering off impurities to produce periodic interference patterns - to infer properties of the QP in momentum-space. Surprisingly, some interference peaks in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) are absent beyond the antiferromagnetic (AF) zone boundary, implying the dominance of particular scattering process. Here, we show that ARPES sees no evidence of quasiparticle (QP) extinction: QP-like peaks are measured everywhere on the Fermi surface, evolving smoothly across the AF zone boundary. This apparent contradiction stems from different natures of single-particle (ARPES) and two-particle (STS) processes underlying these probes. Using a simple model, we demonstrate extinction of QPI without implying the loss of QP beyond the AF zone boundary.

Field cooling memory effect in Bi2212 and Bi2223 single crystals

A memory effect in the Josephson vortex system created by magnetic field in the highly anisotropic superconductors Bi2212 and Bi2223 is demonstrated using microwave power absorption. This surprising effect appears despite a very low viscosity of Josephson vortices compared to Abrikosov vortices. The superconductor is field cooled in DC magnetic field H_{m} oriented parallel to the CuO planes through the critical temperature T_{c} down to 4K, with subsequent reduction of the field to zero and again above H_{m}. Large microwave power absorption signal is observed at a magnetic field just above the cooling field clearly indicating a memory effect. The dependence of the signal on deviation of magnetic field from H_{m} is the same for a wide range of H_{m} from 0.15T to 1.7T.

Characteristics of light reflected from a dense ionization wave with a tunable velocity

An optically-dense ionization wave (IW) produced by two femtosecond laser pulses focused cylindrically and crossing each other is shown to be an efficient coherent x-ray converter. The resulting velocity of a quasi-plane IW in the vicinity of pulse intersection increases with the angle between the pulses from the group velocity of ionizing pulses to infinity allowing an easy tuning the wavelength of x-rays. The x-ray spectra of a converted, lower frequency coherent light change from the monochromatic to a high order harmonic-like with the duration of ionizing pulses and the intensity of scattered pulses; the spectrum are not symmetrical at V c.

Out-of-plane thermopower of strongly correlated layered systems: an application to Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}

We calculate the out-of-plane thermopower in a quasi-two dimensional system, and argue that this quantity is an effective probe of the asymmetry of the single-particle spectral function. We find that the temperature and doping dependence of the out-of-plane thermopower in Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} single crystals is broadly consistent with the behavior of the spectral function determined from ARPES and tunneling experiments. We also investigate the relationship between out-of-plane thermopower and entropy in a quasi-two dimensional material. We present experimental evidence that at moderate temperatures, there is a qualitative correspondence between the out-of-plane thermopower in Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}, and the entropy obtained from specific heat measurements. Finally, we argue that the derivative of the entropy with respect to particle number may be the more appropriate quantity to compare with the thermopower, rather than the entropy per particle.

Enhancement of Superconducting Transition Temperature due to the strong Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in Non-centrosymmetric Heavy-fermion Superconductor CeIrSi3 :A 29Si-NMR Study under Pressure

We report a 29Si-NMR study on the pressure-induced superconductivity (SC) in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) heavy-fermion compound CeIrSi3 without inversion symmetry. In the SC state at P=2.7-2.8 GPa, the temperature dependence of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 below Tc exhibits a T^3 behavior without any coherence peak just below Tc, revealing the presence of line nodes in the SC gap. In the normal state, 1/T_1 follows a \sqrt{T}-like behavior, suggesting that the SC emerges under the non-Fermi liquid state dominated by AFM spin fluctuations enhanced around quantum critical point (QCP). The reason why the maximum Tc in CeIrSi3 is relatively high among the Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors may be the existence of the strong AFM spin fluctuations. We discuss the comparison with the other Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors.

JVN observations of H2O masers around the evolved star IRAS 22480+6002

We report on the H2O maser distributions around IRAS 22480+6002 (=IRC+60370) observed with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) at three epochs spanning 2 months. This object was identified as a K-type supergiant in 1970s, which was unusual as a stellar maser source. The spectrum of H2O masers consists of 5 peaks separated roughly equally by a few km/s each. The H2O masers were spatially resolved into more than 15 features, which spread about 50 mas along the east--west direction. However, no correlation was found between the proper motion vectors and their spatial distributions; the velocity field of the envelope seems random. A statistical parallax method applied to the observed proper-motion data set gives a distance of 1.0+-0.4 kpc for this object, that is considerably smaller than previously thought. The distance indicates that this is an evolved star with L~5800 Lsun. This star shows radio, infrared, and optical characteristics quite similar to those of the population II post-AGB stars such as RV Tau variables.

An SiO Maser Search off the Galactic Plane

We have searched for the SiO J=1--0 v= 1 and 2 maser lines at ~ 43 GHz in 277 2MASS/MSX/IRAS sources off the Galactic plane (|b|> 3 deg), which resulted in 119 (112 new) detections. Among the new detections, are two very faint objects with MSX 12 micron flux densities below 2 Jy. These are likely to be O-rich AGB-stars associated with dwarf-galaxy tidal tails. The sample also includes medium bright MSX objects at moderately high Galactic latitudes (3 deg<|b|<5 deg) and in the IRAS gap at higher latitudes. A signature of a warp of the inner Galactic disk is found for a disk subsample. This warp appears relatively strongly in the area of 0<l<45 deg and 3<|b|<5 deg. We also found a group of stars that does not follow to the Galactic rotation. This feature appears in the Galactic disk at l~ 27 deg, and extends more than 15 deg in Galactic latitude, like a stream of tidal debris from a dwarf galaxy.

Distinct Fermi-Momentum Dependent Energy Gaps in Deeply Underdoped Bi2212

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy applied to deeply underdoped cuprate superconductors Bi2Sr2(Ca,Y)Cu2O8 (Bi2212) to reveal the presence of two distinct energy gaps exhibiting different doping dependence. One gap, associated with the antinodal region where no coherent peak is observed, increases with underdoping - a behavior known for more than a decade and considered as the general gap behavior in the underdoped regime. The other gap, associated with the near nodal regime where a coherent peak in the spectrum can be observed, does not increase with less doping - a behavior not observed in the single particle spectra before. We propose a two-gap scenario in momentum space that is consistent with other experiments and may contain important information on the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity.

Universal Scaling Behavior of Anomalous Hall Effect and Anomalous Nernst Effect in Itinerant Ferromagnets

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in a variety of ferromagnetic metals including pure metals, oxides, and chalcogenides, are studied to obtain unified understandings of their origins. We show a universal scaling behavior of anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ as a function of longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ over five orders of magnitude, which is well explained by a recent theory of the AHE taking into account both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions. ANE is closely related with AHE and provides us with further information about the low-temperature electronic state of itinerant ferromagnets. Temperature dependence of transverse Peltier coefficient $α_{xy}$ shows an almost similar behavior among various ferromagnets, and this behavior is in good agreement quantitatively with that expected from the Mott rule.

Dynamic relaxation of magnetic clusters in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As epilayer

A new scenario of the mechanism of intriguing ferromagnetic properties in Mn-doped magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As is examined in detail. We find that magnetic features seen in zero-field cooled and field cooled magnetizations are not interpreted with a single domain model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 217204 (2005)], and the magnetic relaxation, which is similar to that seen in magnetic particles and granular systems, is becoming significant at temperatures above the lower-temperature peak in the temperature dependence of ac susceptibility, supporting the cluster/matrix model reported in our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 147203 (2005)]. Cole-Cole analysis reveals that magnetic interactions between such (Ga,Mn)As clusters are significant at temperatures below the higher-temperature peak in the temperature dependent ac susceptibility. The magnetizations of these films disappear above the temperature showing the higher-temperature peak, which is generally referred to as the Curie temperature. However, we suggest that these combined results are evidence that the temperature is actually the blocking temperature of (Ga,Mn)As clusters with a relatively high hole concentration compared to the (Ga,Mn)As matrix.

Static magnetic order in metallic K$_{0.49}$CoO$_{2}$

By means of muon spin spectroscopy, we have found that K$_{0.49}$CoO$_2$ crystals undergo successive magnetic transitions from a high-T paramagnetic state to a magnetic ordered state below 60 K and then to a second ordered state below 16 K, even though K_{0.49}CoO_2 is metallic at least down to 4 K. An isotropic magnetic behavior and wide internal-field distributions suggest the formation of a commensurate helical spin density wave (SDW) state below 16 K, while a linear SDW state is likely to exist above 16 K. It was also found that K_{0.49}CoO_2 exhibits a further transition at 150 K presumably due to a change in the spin state of the Co ions. Since the T dependence of the internal-field below 60 K was similar to that for Na_{0.5}CoO_2, this suggests that magnetic order is more strongly affected by the Co valence than by the interlayer distance/interaction and/or the charge-ordering.

Multi-epoch VERA Observations of H2O masers in OH 43.8-0.1

We report on the multi-epoch observations of H2O maser emission in star forming region OH 43.8-0.1 carried out with VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). The large-scale maser distributions obtained by single-beam VLBI mapping reveal new maser spots scattered in area of 0.7 x 1.0 arcsec, in addition to a `shell-like' structure with a scale of 0.3 x 0.5 arcsec which was previously mapped by Downes et al.(1979). Proper motions are also obtained for 43 spots based on 5-epoch monitoring with a time span of 281 days. The distributions of proper motions show a systematic outflow in the north-south direction with an expansion velocity of ~8 km/s, and overall distributions of maser spots as well as proper motions are better represented by a bipolar flow plus a central maser cluster with a complex structure, rather than a shell with a uniform expansion such as those found in Cep A R5 and W75N VLA2. The distance to OH 43.8-0.1 is also estimated based on the statistical parallax, yielding D = 2.8 +/- 0.5 kpc. This distance is consistent with a near kinematic distance and rules out a far kinematics distance (~9 kpc), and the LSR velocity of OH 43.8-0.1 combined with the distance provides a constraint on the flatness of the galactic rotation curve, that there is no systematic difference in rotation speeds at the Sun and at the position of OH 43.8-0.1, which is located at the galacto-centric radius of ~6.3 kpc.

Hysteretic current-voltage characteristics and resistance switching at an epitaxial oxide Schottky junction SrRuO$_{3}$/SrTi$_{0.99}$Nb$_{0.01}$O$_{3}$

Transport properties have been studied for a perovskite heterojunction consisting of SrRuO$_{3}$ (SRO) film epitaxially grown on SrTi$_{0.99}$Nb$_{0.01}$O$_{3}$ (Nb:STO) substrate. The SRO/Nb:STO interface exhibits rectifying current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics agreeing with those of a Schottky junction composed of a deep work-function metal (SRO) and an $n$-type semiconductor (Nb:STO). A hysteresis appears in the $I$-$V$ characteristics, where high resistance and low resistance states are induced by reverse and forward bias stresses, respectively. The resistance switching is also triggered by applying short voltage pulses of 1 $μ$s - 10 ms duration.
