The MAGPI Survey: Emission Line Products Data Release and the Role of Spectroscopic Aperture Covering Fraction on the Balmer Decrement-Stellar Mass Relation

The Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral field spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey is a Large Program on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope using the MUSE instrument. This paper presents the data release for the MAGPI emission line products and includes emission line maps for 836 galaxies at $0.05\leq z_\mathrm{spec}\leq 0.424$ ($\mathrm{H}\alpha$-window) and aperture-based emission line measurements for 2,607 galaxies at $0.05\leq z_\mathrm{spec}\leq 1.50$ (upper bound is [OII] cut-off), both based on the GIST software, for all 56 MAGPI fields. We use these data to examine dust attenuation, which represents a major source of uncertainty in the derived properties of galaxies that are critical to constrain models of galaxy evolution. We examine the role that the spectroscopic aperture covering fraction ($f_c$) has on the relationship between the Balmer decrement ($\mathrm{BD}=F(\mathrm{H}\alpha)/F(\mathrm{H}\beta)$; a common proxy for dust attenuation) and the total stellar mass ($M_\star$). Several studies have suggested that the BD-$M_\star$ relation may be redshift invariant; however, the compared surveys often have different $f_c$ due to their differing fibre or slit sizes that can cause systematic offsets. Our results indicate that $f_c$ has a significant impact on this relationship, due to galaxies having negative BD radial gradients, which are more negative for more massive galaxies at $z\lesssim0.4$. Comparing spectroscopic surveys with $\left \gtrsim 0.5$, we find that the BD-$M_\star$ relation shows a preference for redshift evolution and is roughly consistent with the behaviour of UV stellar continuum attenuation redshift evolution ($A_\mathrm{FUV}$-$z$), with the average dust attenuation in galaxies peaking at $z\sim1.2$ and decreasing at lower and higher redshifts.

The Multi-phase Biconical Outflow in the local IR-Luminous Merger IRASF01364-1042

We investigate the spatially-resolved ISM properties of the local ($z = 0.048$), IR-luminous ($L_{\rm IR} = 10^{11.87}$\,L$_\odot$), late-stage galaxy merger IRAS F01364-1042, combining multi-wavelength IFU observations from \textit{JWST/MIRI-MRS}, ALMA and Keck/KCWI. Using these datasets, we construct emission line maps of several key tracers of the ionized (e.g., [Ne\,II]\,12.8$\mu$m, [O\,III]$\lambda5007$), warm molecular (e.g., \ce{H2}\,0-0\,S(3)), and cold molecular gas (e.g., CO (J$=2-1$)), and perform detailed decomposition of spectra extracted in resolved regions across the areas of emission. We confirm the presence of a multi-phase galactic biconical outflow along the minor axis of a highly inclined rotating disk. The inferred outflow velocities are $\sim\,$500 - 600\,km\,s$^{-1}$ $\sim\,$350\,km\,s$^{-1}$, and $\sim\,$200 - 300\,km\,s$^{-1}$, in the ionized, warm and cold molecular phase, respectively, with corresponding mass outflow rates of $\sim 0.3 - 2.3$, $\sim 31$, and $\sim 38 - 240$\,M$_\odot\,$yr$^{-1}$. The cold molecular phase dominates both the total mass outflow rate and the associated kinetic energy ($\sim\,2 - 8 \times 10^{42}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$). We confirm, for the first time, a dust-obscured AGN in IRAS\,F01364-1042, via detection of the [Ne\,V]\,14.3$\mu$m line. The low inferred AGN bolometric luminosity ($1.2 - 1.8 \times 10^{43}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$) suggests that the nuclear starburst alone, with a star formation rate of $\sim 40 - 60$\,M$_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$, can account for the energy required to drive the outflow, though a more active AGN phase in the recent past may have also played a role. Our work showcases the necessity of multi-wavelength observations for interpreting the gas dynamics in merger-driven dusty starbursts, and the capability of \textit{JWST/MIRI-MRS} to uncover obscured, low-luminosity AGN that may be common in these systems.

Energy Correlators Within Jets in Transversely Polarized Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV

We report the first measurement of one- and two-point energy correlators within jets in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, using the STAR detector at RHIC. These observables quantify the energy-weighted angular distribution of single hadrons and hadron pairs within jets, respectively. Sizable spin-dependent asymmetries are observed for $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, and $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs, revealing the onset of nonperturbative dynamics at specific angular scales. By projecting the fragmentation dynamics onto Mellin moments, these measurements provide sensitivity to the nucleon's transversity while minimizing uncertainties from nonperturbative fragmentation functions. These results establish energy correlators as a novel and precise probe of nucleon structure and open a promising avenue for three-dimensional nucleon tomography at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Inclusive jet cross section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ and $510$ GeV

Jets are collimated clusters of particles formed by the hadronization of partons following a hard interaction. In proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), jet production is dominated by $gg$ and $qg$ partonic processes, allowing us to directly probe the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) in the proton in a way complementary to deep inelastic scattering. In this paper, we report the double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections as a function of jet transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and pseudorapidity, $\eta$, at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 200$ and $510$~GeV, from $pp$ collisions studied with the STAR detector. The jet $p_{\rm T}$ is corrected for underlying event contributions by applying an off-axis cone method. At mid-pseudorapidity, $|\eta| < 0.9$, the kinematic coverage of our data extends to $0.07 < x_{\rm T} \text{ (}= 2p_{\rm T}{} / \sqrt{s} \text{)} < 0.5$ and $0.03 < x_{\rm T} < 0.31$ at $\sqrt{s} = 200$~and 510 GeV, respectively, where the gluon PDF is poorly constrained by the TeV-scale $pp$~($p\bar{p}$) colliders. The inclusive jet cross sections are compared to the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations using several recent PDF sets as inputs. These results will further constrain the gluon PDF, help tune Monte Carlo generators, and provide critical reference data needed to study the quark-gluon plasma.

High-Precision Mass Measurements of Proton-Rich Rh, Pd, Cd isotopes in the vicinity of 100Sn and Impact on X-Ray Burst and Supernova Nucleosynthesis

Using the ZeroDegree multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph of the CRISMASS project at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, we performed high-precision mass measurements of proton-rich nuclei near the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn, achieving uncertainties on the order of 10 keV. The masses of 91Rh, 92Pd, and 96Cd were determined for the first time with high precision, and the accuracy of several additional masses was substantially improved. Incorporating the new data into X-ray burst simulations significantly reduces the abundance uncertainties in the $A$ = 90-100 region, shifting the reaction flow toward $A$ = 90 production and suppressing the synthesis of heavier nuclei. Further investigation of the $\nu p$-process indicates that 99Rh plays a significant role in the reaction flow within the mass region studied. These high-precision mass measurements refine the mass surface near 100Sn and provide critical constraints on models of proton-rich nucleosynthesis.

Probing Late-Stage Hadronic Interactions at High Baryon Density via $K^{*0}$ Production in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Program

A precision measurement of the $K^{*0}$ meson yield is reported in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7,\; 11.5,\; 14.6,\; 19.6,$ and $27~\mathrm{GeV}$ using the high-statistics data sample collected by the STAR experiment during the Beam Energy Scan II (BES-II) program at RHIC. The transeverse momentum ($p_{T}$)-integrated yield ratios $(K^{*0} + \overline{K^{*0}})/(K^{+} + K^{-})$ in central collisions show a suppression relative to peripheral collisions at the $(1.7\text{-}3.6)\,\sigma$ level, while a thermal model without final-stage rescattering overpredicts this ratio with a deviation of $(6.9\text{-}8.2)\,\sigma$. These results indicate a loss of the measured $K^{*0}$ signal in central collisions due to re-scattering of its hadronic decay products in the hadronic phase. The $p_{T}$-integrated yield of charged kaons exhibits an approximate scaling with charged-particle multiplicity, independent of collision energy and system size. A similar trend is observed for the short-lived $K^{*0}$ resonance, although significant deviations emerge at lower energies. At BES energies, the $K^{*0}/K$ ratio shows stronger suppression than at the highest RHIC and LHC energies within a given multiplicity bin, particularly in central and mid-central collisions. This behavior is consistent with changes in the effective hadronic interaction cross section and is supported by transport model calculations, which indicate dominant meson-baryon interactions at lower energies and meson-meson interactions at higher energies.

Identified charged hadron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV with the STAR detector

We present results on the production of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 54.4~GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC, at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 0.1). Invariant yields of these particles as a function of transverse momentum are shown. We determine bulk properties such as integrated particle yields ($dN/dy$), mean transverse momentum ($\langle p_{T} \rangle$), particle ratios, which provide insight into the particle production mechanisms. Additionally, the kinetic freezeout parameters ($T_\text{kin}$ and $\langle \beta_{T} \rangle$), which provide information about the dynamics of the system at the time of freezeout, are obtained. The Bjorken energy density ($\epsilon_{\rm{BJ}}$), which gives an estimate of the energy density in the central rapidity region of the collision zone at the formation time $\tau$, is calculated and presented as a function of multiplicity for various energies. The results are compared with those from the models such as A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) and Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator (HIJING) for further insights.

Study of Central Exclusive Production of $\pi^+\pi^-$, $K^+K^-$ and $p \bar{p}$ Pairs in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV with the STAR Detector at RHIC

We report on the first measurement of the Central Exclusive Production process in proton-proton collisions: $pp \ \rightarrow \ p h^+ h^- p$ (where $h = \pi, K, p$) at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. At this energy, the process is dominated by a double Pomeron exchange mechanism. Hence, it provides a clean environment for investigating Pomeron interactions by measuring fully reconstructed final states involving only two hadrons and two forward scattered protons. The oppositely charged hadron pairs are measured within the central detector of STAR. The forward scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system allowing the verification of the event's exclusivity. Differential fiducial cross sections within the STAR acceptance are presented as a function of the difference in the azimuthal angle between the outgoing protons. The invariant masses of the charged hadron pairs are measured up to approximately 3 GeV and the square of the four-momentum transfer ($t_1$ and $t_2$) of the two forward-scattered protons in the range $0.3 \text{ GeV}^2 < -t_1 , -t_2 < 1.6 \text{ GeV}^2$. The differential fiducial cross sections of the forward protons as a function of the $|t_1 + t_2|$ are also presented. All results for the $\pi^+\pi^-$ pair are presented in three mass ranges. A comparison with GRANIITTI Monte Carlo predictions are also presented, where the spectra include continuum and resonant contributions. The observed spectra are consistent with double Pomeron exchange, including resonances seen in previous studies.

Measurement of transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons inside jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

A surprisingly large transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in unpolarized hadron-nucleon/nucleus collisions has been observed for 50 years, and the origin of this polarization remains an important open question. Recently, theoretical frameworks have advanced in describing this puzzle with the polarizing fragmentation function (PFF). We report the first measurement of $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ transverse polarization inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions, which is directly attributed to the PFF. The polarization is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum, the fraction of the jet momentum carried by $\Lambda$($\overline{\Lambda}$) hyperons, and the transverse momentum of $\Lambda(\overline{\Lambda})$ hyperons relative to the jet axis. Covering a wide jet-energy range, these data provide the first constraints on the gluon PFF and allow tests of TMD evolution and its universality.

Observation of charmonium sequential suppression in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We report measurements of charmonium sequential suppression in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield ratio of $\psi$(2S) to J/$\psi$ as a function of transverse momentum is reported, along with the centrality dependence of the double ratio, defined as the $\psi$(2S) to J/$\psi$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in $p$+$p$ collisions. In the 0-80% centrality class, the double ratio is found to be 0.41 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.03 (syst) $\pm$ 0.02 (ref), lower than unity with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. This provides experimental evidence that $\psi$(2S) is significantly more suppressed than J/$\psi$ in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. This sequential suppression pattern seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions, but with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum.

Energy Independence of the Collins Asymmetry in $p^{\uparrow}p$ Collisions

The STAR experiment reports new, high-precision measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries for $\pi^{\pm}$ within jets, namely the Collins asymmetries, from transversely polarized ${p^{\uparrow}p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 GeV. The energy-scaled distribution of jet transverse momentum, $x_{\mathrm{T}} = 2p_{\mathrm{T,jet}}/\sqrt s$, shows a remarkable consistency for Collins asymmetries of $\pi^{\pm}$ in jets between $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV and 510 GeV. This indicates that the Collins asymmetries are nearly energy independent with, at most, a very weak scale dependence in $p^{\uparrow}p$ collisions. These results extend to high-momentum scales ($Q^2 \leq 3400$ GeV$^2$) and enable unique tests of evolution and universality in the transverse-momentum-dependent formalism, thus providing important constraints for the Collins fragmentation functions.

Onset of Constituent Quark Number Scaling in Heavy-Ion Collisions at RHIC

Partonic collectivity is one of the necessary signatures for the formation of quark-gluon plasma in high-energy nuclear collisions. Number of constituent quarks (NCQ) scaling has been observed for hadron elliptic flow $v_2$ in top energy nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the LHC, and this has been theoretically suggested as strong evidence for partonic collectivity. In this Letter, a systematic analysis of $v_2$ of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, $p$, and $\Lambda$ in Au+Au collisions at ${\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}}$ = 3.2, 3.5, 3.9, and 4.5 GeV, with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, is presented. NCQ scaling is markedly violated at 3.2 GeV, consistent with a hadronic-interaction dominated equation of state. However, as the collision energy increases, a gradual evolution to NCQ scaling is observed. This beam-energy dependence of $v_2$ for all hadrons studied provides evidence for the onset of dominant partonic interactions by ${\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}}$ = 4.5 GeV.

Measurement of Kaon Directed Flow in Au+Au Collisions in the High Baryon Density Region

Rapidity-odd directed flow $v_1$ measurements are presented for $K^{\pm}$ and $K^0_S$ in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 3.0, 3.2, 3.5, and 3.9 GeV with the STAR experiment. For comparison, $v_1$ of $\pi^{\pm}$, protons, and $\Lambda$ from the same collisions are also discussed. The mid-rapidity $v_1$ slope $\text{d}v_1/\text{d}y|_{y=0}$ for protons and $\Lambda$ is positive in these collisions. On the other hand, $v_1$ slope of kaons exhibits a strong $p_\text{T}$ dependence: negative at $p_\text{T} <$ 0.6 GeV/$c$ and positive at higher $p_\text{T}$. A similar $p_\text{T}$ dependence is also evident for the $v_1$ slope of charged pions. Compared to the spectator-removed calculations in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} =$ 3.0-3.9 GeV, the JAM model demonstrates a pronounced shift of the $v_1$ slopes of mesons towards the negative direction. It suggests that the shadowing effect of the spectators plays an important role in the observed kaon anti-flow at low $p_\text{T}$ in the high baryon density region of non-central collisions.

Correlations of event activity with hard and soft processes in $p$ + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at STAR

With the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativisic Heavy Ion Collider, we characterize $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV p+Au collisions by event activity (EA) measured within the pseudorapidity range $eta$ $in$ [-5, -3.4] in the Au-going direction and report correlations between this EA and hard- and soft- scale particle production at midrapidity ($\eta$ $\in$ [-1, 1]). At the soft scale, charged particle production in low-EA p+Au collisions is comparable to that in p+p collisions and increases monotonically with increasing EA. At the hard scale, we report measurements of high transverse momentum (pT) jets in events of different EAs. In contrast with the soft particle production, high-pT particle production and EA are found to be inversely related. To investigate whether this is a signal of jet quenching in high-EA events, we also report ratios of pT imbalance and azimuthal separation of dijets in high- and low-EA events. Within our measurement precision, no significant differences are observed, disfavoring the presence of jet quenching in the highest 30% EA p+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV.

First Exploration of Monopole-Driven Shell Evolution above the N = 126 shell closure: new Millisecond Isomers in 213Tl and 215Tl

Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in 213Tl and 874(5) keV in 215Tl. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in 213Tl and 3.0(3) ms in 215Tl suggest spins and parities 11/2- with the single proton-hole configuration h11/2 as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2+, interpreted as arising from a single s1/2 proton hole coupled to the 8+ seniority isomer in the (A+1)Pb cores. The lowering of the 11/2- states is ascribed to an increase of the h11/2 proton effective single-particle energy as the second g9/2 orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the h11/2 and g9/2 orbitals. The new ms-isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly-magic 208Pb.

Measurement of flow coefficients in high-multiplicity $p$+Au, $d$+Au and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$=200 GeV

Flow coefficients ($v_2$ and $v_3$) are measured in high-multiplicity $p$+Au, $d$+Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The measurements utilize two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity requirement of $|\eta| <$ 0.9 and a pair gap of $|\Delta\eta|>1.0$. The primary focus is on analysis methods, particularly the subtraction of non-flow contributions. Four established non-flow subtraction methods are applied to determine $v_n$, validated using the HIJING event generator. $v_n$ values are compared across the three collision systems at similar multiplicities; this comparison cancels the final state effects and isolates the impact of initial geometry. While $v_2$ values show differences among these collision systems, $v_3$ values are largely similar, consistent with expectations of subnucleon fluctuations in the initial geometry. The ordering of $v_n$ differs quantitatively from previous measurements using two-particle correlations with a larger rapidity gap, which, according to model calculations, can be partially attributed to the effects of longitudinal flow decorrelations. The prospects for future measurements to improve our understanding of flow decorrelation and subnucleonic fluctuations are also discussed.

Production of Protons and Light Nuclei in Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 3 GeV with the STAR Detector

We report the systematic measurement of protons and light nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 3 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) spectra of protons ($p$), deuterons ($d$), tritons ($t$), $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ are measured from mid-rapidity to target rapidity for different collision centralities. We present the rapidity and centrality dependence of particle yields ($dN/dy$), average transverse momentum ($\langle p_{T}\rangle$), yield ratios ($d/p$, $t/p$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}/p$, $^{4}\mathrm{He}/p$), as well as the coalescence parameters ($B_2$, $B_3$). The 4$\pi$ yields for various particles are determined by utilizing the measured rapidity distributions, $dN/dy$. Furthermore, we present the energy, centrality, and rapidity dependence of the compound yield ratios ($N_{p} \times N_{t} / N_{d}^{2}$) and compare them with various model calculations. The physics implications of those results on the production mechanism of light nuclei and on QCD phase structure are discussed.

Measurements of charged-particle multiplicity dependence of higher-order net-proton cumulants in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 200 GeV from STAR at RHIC

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV $p$+$p$ collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios $C_{4}/C_{2}$, $C_{5}/C_{1}$, and $C_{6}/C_{2}$ decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios $C_{5}/C_{1}$ and $C_{6}/C_{2}$ approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in $p$+$p$ collisions.
