Phase diagrams of flux lattices with disorder

We review the prediction, made in a previous work [Phys. Rev. B 52 (1995)], that the phase diagram of type II superconductors consists of a topologically ordered Bragg glass phase at low fields undergoing a transition at higher fields into a vortex glass or a liquid. We estimate the position of the phase boundary using a Lindemann criterion. We find that the proposed phenomenology is compatible with recent experiments on superconductors.

Stability of the Bragg glass phase in a layered geometry

We study the stability of the dislocation-free Bragg glass phase in a layered geometry consisting of coupled parallel planes of d=1+1 vortex lines lying within each plane, in the presence of impurity disorder. Using renormalization group, replica variational calculations and physical arguments we show that at temperatures $T<T_G$ the 3D Bragg glass phase is always stable for weak disorder. It undergoes a weakly first order transition into a decoupled 2D vortex glass upon increase of disorder.

Effects of a weak disorder on two coupled Hubbard chains

We consider the effect of weak nonmagnetic disorder on two chains of interacting fermions (with and without spins) coupled by interchain hopping. For the spinless case, interchain hopping increases localization for repulsive interactions but {\it stabilizes} the s-wave superconducting phase for attractive interactions. For the case with spin, the d-wave phase arising from purely repulsive interactions in the clean system is destroyed by an infinitesimal disorder while for attractive interactions, the s-wave superconductivity is more resistant to disorder than in the one-chain case.

Elastic theory of flux lattices in presence of weak disorder

The effect of disorder on flux lattices at equilibrium is studied quantitatively in the absence of free dislocations using both the Gaussian variational method and the renormalization group. Our results for the mean square relative displacements clarify the nature of the crossovers with distance. We find three regimes: (i) a short distance regime (``Larkin regime'') where elasticity holds (ii) an intermediate regime (``Random Manifold'') where vortices are pinned independently (iii) a large distance, quasi-ordered regime where the periodicity of the lattice becomes important and there is universal logarithmic growth of displacements for $2<d<4$ and persistence of algebraic quasi-long range translational order. The functional renormalization group to $O(ε=4-d)$ and the variational method, agree within $10\%$ on the value of the exponent. In $d=3$ we compute the crossover function between the three regimes. We discuss the observable signature of this crossover in decoration experiments and in neutron diffraction experiments on flux lattices. Qualitative arguments are given suggesting the existence for weak disorder in $d=3$ of a `` Bragg glass '' phase without free dislocations and with algebraically divergent Bragg peaks. In $d=1+1$ both the variational method and the Cardy-Ostlund renormalization group predict a glassy state below the same transition temperature $T=T_c$, but with different behaviors. Applications to $d=2+0$ systems and experiments on magnetic bubbles are discussed.

Does the attractive Hubbard model support larger persistent currents than the repulsive one ?

We consider a one-dimensional Hubbard model in the presence of disorder. We compute the charge stiffness for a mesoscopic ring, as a function of the size $L$, which is a measure of the permanent currents. We find that for finite disorder the permanent currents of the system with repulsive interactions are larger than those of the system with attractive interactions. This counter intuitive result is due to the fact that local density fluctuations are reduced in the presence of repulsive interactions.

Replica Symmetry Breaking Instability in the 2D XY model in a random field

We study the 2D vortex-free XY model in a random field, a model for randomly pinned flux lines in a plane. We construct controlled RG recursion relations which allow for replica symmetry breaking (RSB). The fixed point previously found by Cardy and Ostlund in the glass phase $T<T_c$ is {\it unstable} to RSB. The susceptibility $χ$ associated to infinitesimal RSB perturbation in the high-temperature phase is found to diverge as $χ\propto (T-T_c)^{-γ}$ when $T \rightarrow T_c^{+}$. This provides analytical evidence that RSB occurs in finite dimensional models. The physical consequences for the glass phase are discussed.

Transport properties of a quantum wire in the presence of impurities and long-range Coulomb forces

One-dimensional electron systems interacting with long-range Coulomb forces (quantum wires) show a Wigner crystal structure. We investigate in this paper the transport properties of such a Wigner crystal in the presence of impurities. Contrary to what happens when only short-range interactions are included, the system is dominated by $4 k_F$ scattering on the impurities. There are two important length scales in such a problem: one is the pinning length above which the (quasi-)long-range order of the Wigner crystal is destroyed by disorder. The other length $ξ_{cr}$ is the length below which Coulomb interactions are not important and the system is behaving as a standard Luttinger liquid with short-range interactions. We obtain the frequency and temperature dependence of the conductivity. We show that such a system is very similar to a classical charge density wave pinned by impurities, but with important differences due to quantum fluctuations and long-range Coulomb interactions. Finally we discuss our results in comparison with experimental systems.

Elastic Theory of pinned flux lattices

The pinning of flux lattices by weak impurity disorder is studied in the absence of free dislocations using both the gaussian variational method and, to $O(ε=4-d)$, the functional renormalization group. We find universal logarithmic growth of displacements for $2<d<4$: $\overline{\langle u(x)-u(0) \rangle ^2}\sim A_d \log|x|$ and persistence of algebraic quasi-long range translational order. When the two methods can be compared they agree within $10\%$ on the value of $A_d$. We compute the function describing the crossover between the ``random manifold'' regime and the logarithmic regime. This crossover should be observable in present decoration experiments.
