MSW Without Matter

We examine the effects of a scalar field, coupled only to neutrinos, on oscillations among weak interaction current eigenstates. The existence of a real scalar field is manifested as effective masses for the neutrino mass eigenstates, the same for $\nbar$ as for $\n$. Under some conditions, this can lead to a vanishing of $δm^2$, giving rise to MSW-like effects. We present an idealized example and show that it may be possible to resolve the apparent discrepancy in spectra required by r-process nucleosynthesis in the mantles of supernovae and by Solar neutrino solutions.

Dynamical Critical Phenomena and Large Scale Structure of the Universe: the Power Spectrum for Density Fluctuations

As is well known, structure formation in the Universe at times after decoupling can be described by hydrodynamic equations. These are shown here to be equivalent to a generalization of the stochastic Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation with time-- dependent viscosity in epochs of dissipation. As a consequence of the Dynamical Critical Scaling induced by noise and fluctuations, these equations describe the fractal behavior (with a scale dependent fractal dimension) observed at the smaller scales for the galaxy--to--galaxy correlation function and $also$ the Harrison--Zel'dovich spectrum at decoupling. By a Renormalization Group calculation of the two--point correlation function between galaxies in the presence of (i) the expansion of the Universe and (ii) non--equilibrium, we can account, from first principles, for the main features of the observed shape of the power spectrum.

No Lambda oscillations

We examine a recently published calculation which predicts an oscillatory behaviour for the decay of Lambdas produced together with a neutral kaon, and proposes a new expression for the wavelength of kaon strangeness oscillations. We modify the calculation by imposing the requirement that the interference of the K_L and K_S components of the kaon wave function occurs at a specific space-time point. With this requirement, the unusual results predicted vanish, and the conventional results are recovered.

Neutrino Clouds

We consider the possibility that neutrinos are coupled very weakly to an extremely light scalar boson. We first analyze the simple problem of one generation of neutrino and show that, for ranges of parameters that are allowed by existing data, such a system can have serious consequences for the evolution of stars and could impact precision laboratory measurements. We discuss the extension to more generations and show that the general conclusion remains viable. Finally, we note that, should such a scalar field be present, experiments give information about effective masses, not the masses that arise in unified field theories.

Phenomenological Aspects of Isospin Violation in the Nuclear Force

Phenomenological Lagrangians and dimensional power counting are used to assess isospin violation in the nucleon-nucleon force. The $πNN$ coupling constants (including the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy), charge-symmetry breaking, and meson-mixing models are examined. A one-loop analysis of the isospin-violating $πNN$ coupling constants is performed using chiral perturbation theory. Meson-mixing models and the $^3$He - $^3$H mass difference are also discussed in the context of naturalness.

Quark Delocalization, Color Screening and Dibaryons

The quark delocalization and color screening model, a quark potential model, is used for a systematic search of dibaryon candidates in the $u,d$ and $s$ three flavor world. Color screening which appears in unquenched lattice gauge calculations and quark delocalization (which is similar to electron delocalization in molecular physics) are both included. Flavor symmetry breaking and channel coupling effects are studied. The model is constrained not only by baryon ground state properties but also by the $N$-$N$ scattering phase shifts. The deuteron and zero energy di-nucleon resonance are both reproduced qualitatively. The model predicts two extreme types of dibaryonic systems: ``molecular'' like the deuteron, and highly delocalized six-quark systems among which only a few narrow dibaryon resonances occur in the $u,d$ and $s$ three flavor world. Possible high spin dibaryon resonances are emphasized.

Are Antiprotons Forever?

Up to one million antiprotons from a single LEAR spill have been captured in a large Penning trap. Surprisingly, when the antiprotons are cooled to energies significantly below 1 eV, the annihilation rate falls below background. Thus, very long storage times for antiprotons have been demonstrated in the trap, even at the compromised vacuum conditions imposed by the experimental set up. The significance for future ultra-low energy experiments, including portable antiproton traps, is discussed.

Antimatter Gravity and Antihydrogen Production

Certain modern theories of gravity predict that antimatter will fall differently than matter in the Earth's gravitational field. However, no experimental tests of gravity on antimatter exist and all conclusions drawn from experiments on matter depend, at some level, on a specific model. We have proposed a direct measurement that would compare the gravitational acceleration of antiprotons to that of negatively charged hydrogen ions. Substantial progress towards the development of this experiment has been achieved. Based on our work a number of alternative proposals for measuring ``$g$" on both charged and neutral antimatter have been made. We summarize the present status of our experiment and also discuss the steps that would be necessary to produce antihydrogen in an environment suitable for gravity measurements.

Renormalization Group Calculation of the Galaxy-Galaxy Correlation Function

The observable Universe is described by a collection of equal mass galaxies linked into a common unit by their mutual gravitational interaction. The partition function of this system is cast in terms of Ising model spin variables and maps exactly onto a three-dimensional stochastic scalar classical field theory. The full machinery of the renormalization group and critical phenomena is brought to bear on this field theory allowing one to calculate the galaxy-galaxy correlation function, whose critical exponent is predicted to be between 1.530 to 1.862, compared to the phenomenological value of 1.6 to 1.8

Quark Model Calculations Of Symmetry Breaking in Parton Distributions

Using a quark model, we calculate symmetry breaking effects in the valence quark distributions of the nucleon. In particular, we examine the breaking of the quark model SU(4) symmetry by color magnetic effects, and find that color magnetism provides an explanation for deviation of the ratio $d_V(x)/u_V(x)$ from $1/2$. Additionally, we calculate the effect of charge symmetry breaking in the valence quark distributions of the proton and neutron and find, in contrast to other authors, that the effect is too small to be seen experimentally.

Ising Model formulation of Large Scale Dynamics: Universality in the Universe

The partition function of a system of galaxies in gravitational interaction can be cast in an Ising Model form, and this reformulated via a Hubbard--Stratonovich transformation into a three dimensional stochastic and classical scalar field theory, whose critical exponents are calculable and known. This allows one to {\it compute\/} the galaxy to galaxy correlation function, whose non--integer exponent is predicted to be between 1.530 and 1.862, to be compared with the phenomenological value of 1.6 to 1.8.

Theoretical Motivation for Gravitation Experiments on Ultra-Low Energy Antiprotons and Antihydrogen

We know that the generally accepted theories of gravity and quantum mechanics are fundamentally incompatible. Thus, when we try to combine these theories, we must beware of physical pitfalls. Modern theories of quantum gravity are trying to overcome these problems. Any ideas must confront the present agreement with general relativity, but yet be free to wonder about not understood phenomena, such as the dark matter problem and the anomalous spacecraft data which we announce here. This all has led some ``intrepid" theorists to consider a new gravitational regime, that of antimatter. Even more ``daring" experimentalists are attempting, or considering attempting, the measurement of the gravitational force on antimatter, including low-energy antiprotons and, perhaps most enticing, antihydrogen.

Gamma Ray Bursts, Neutron Star Quakes, and the Casimir Effect

We propose that the dynamic Casimir effect is a mechanism that converts the energy of neutron starquakes into $γ$--rays. This mechanism efficiently produces photons from electromagnetic Casimir energy released by the rapid motion of a dielectric medium into a vacuum. Estimates based on the cutoff energy of the gamma ray bursts and the volume involved in a starquake indicate that the total gamma ray energy emission is consonant with observational requirements.

Confinement, Crossing Symmetry, and Glueballs

We suggest that the quark-confining force is related by crossing symmetry to a color-singlet glueball ${\cal G}$ which is well described as a loop of one quantum of color magnetic flux. Electron pair annihilation as high as $\approx 2 GeV$ above the $Υ$ mass could produce $Υ\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ accompanied by ${\cal G}$ or one of its excited states.

Radiative Leptonic Decays of Heavy Mesons

We compute the photon spectrum and the rate for the decays $B(D)\to lν_lγ$ These photonic modes constitute a potentially large background for the purely leptonic decays which are used to extract the heavy meson decay constants. While the rate for $D\to l\n\g$ is small, the radiative decay in the $B$ meson case could be of comparable magnitude or even larger than $B\to\m\n$. This would affect the determination of $f_B$ if the $τ$ channel cannot be identified. We obtain theoretical estimates for the photonic rates and disscuss their possible experimental implications.

Space-Time Symmetries: P and CP Violation

We begin with a few remarks on an explicit construction of a Bargmann-Wightman-Wigner-type quantum field theory [Phys. Lett. B {\bf 316}, 102 (1993)] in which bosons and associated antibosons have opposite relative intrinsic parities. We then construct $(1,0)\oplus(0,1)$ Majorana ($CP$ self conjugate) and Majorana-like ($CΓ^5$ self conjugate, $Γ^5=$ chirality operator) fields. We point out that this new structure in the space time symmetries may be relevant to $P$ and $CP$ violation.

(J,0)+(0,j) Representation Space: Dirac-Like Construct

This is first of the two invited lectures presented (by D. V. Ahluwalia) at the ``XVII International School of Theoretical Physics: Standard Model and Beyond' 93.'' The text is essentially based on a recent publication by the present authors [Phys. Lett. B 316 (1993) 102]. Here we show that the Dirac-like construct in the $(j,0)\oplus(0,j)$ representation space supports a Bargmann-Wightman-Wigner-type quantum field theory.
