Bloch-Nordsieck Estimates of High-Temperature QED

In anticipation of a subsequent application to QCD, we consider the case of QED at high temperature. We introduce a Fradkin representation into the exact, Schwingerian, functional expression of a fermion propagator, as well as a new and relevant version of the Bloch-Nordsieck (BN) model, which extracts the soft contributions of every perturbative graph, in contradistinction to the assumed separation of energy scales of previous semi-perturbative treatments. Our results are applicable to the absorption of a fast particle which enters a heat bath, as well as to the propagation of a symmetric pulse within the thermal medium due to the appearance of an instantaneous, shock-wave-like source acting in the medium. An exponentially-decreasing time dependence of the incident particle's initial momentum combines with a stronger decrease in the particle's energy, estimated by a sum over all Matsubara frequencies, to model an initial "fireball", which subsequently decays in a Gaussian fashion. When extended to QCD, qualitative applications could be made to RHIC scattering, in which a fireball appears, expands and is damped away.

Twin Paradox and Causality

After pointing out the historical avatar at the origin of a would be twin or clock paradox, we argue that, at least on a local scale, the (re-qualified) paradox is but a necessary consequence of the sole principle of causality.

On a fate of hot quantum field theories

It is argued that for hot quantum fields, the necessary effective perturbation theories may be based on a resummation procedure which, contrarily to the zero temperature case, differs substantially from the one ordinarily in use. Important differences show up in the infrared sector of hot quantum field theories.

Puzzling aspects of hot quantum fields

Over the past decade, Finite Temperature Quantum Field Theories have benefitted from impressive developments, while an increasing number of intriguing points were made. Some of them are presented here, recent and older, in a non exhaustive list.

Comments on two papers by Kapusta and Wong

We critically examine recently published results on the thermal production of massive vector bosons in a quark-gluon plasma. We claim the production rate is a collinear safe observable.

Thermal Field Theory and Infinite Statistics

We construct a quantum thermal field theory for scalar particles in the case of infinite statistics. The extension is provided by working out the Fock space realization of a "quantum algebra", and by identifying the hamiltonian as the energy operator. We examine the perturbative behavior of this theory and in particular the possible extension of the KLN theorem, and argue that it appears as a stable structure in a quantum field theory context.
