Riemann-Hilbert problem for the small dispersion limit of the KdV equation and linear overdetermined systems of Euler-Poisson-Darboux type

We study the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with small dispersion and with monotonically increasing initial data using the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) approach. The solution of the Cauchy problem, in the zero dispersion limit, is obtained using the steepest descent method for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems. The asymptotic solution is completely described by a scalar function $\g$ that satisfies a scalar RH problem and a set of algebraic equations constrained by algebraic inequalities. The scalar function $\g$ is equivalent to the solution of the Lax-Levermore maximization problem. The solution of the set of algebraic equations satisfies the Whitham equations. We show that the scalar function $\g$ and the Lax-Levermore maximizer can be expressed as the solution of a linear overdetermined system of equations of Euler-Poisson-Darboux type. We also show that the set of algebraic equations and algebraic inequalities can be expressed in terms of the solution of a different set of linear overdetermined systems of equations of Euler-Poisson-Darboux type. Furthermore we show that the set of algebraic equations is equivalent to the classical solution of the Whitham equations expressed by the hodograph transformation.

Bifurcation diagram of a one-parameter family of dispersive waves

The Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with small dispersion is a model for the formation and propagation of dispersive shock waves in one dimension. Dispersive shock waves in KdV are characterized by the appearance of zones of rapid modulated oscillations in the solution of the Cauchy problem with smooth initial data. The modulation in time and space of the amplitudes, the frequencies and the wave-numbers of these oscillations and their interactions is approximately described by the $g$-phase Whitham equations. We study the initial value problem for the Whitham equations for a one parameter family of monotone decreasing initial data. We obtain the bifurcation diagram of the number $g$ of interacting oscillatory zones.

From the solution of the Tsarev system to the solution of the Whitham equations

We study the Cauchy problem for the Whitham modulation equations for monotone increasing smooth initial data. The Whitham equations are a collection of one-dimensional quasi-linear hyperbolic systems. This collection of systems is enumerated by the genus g=0,1,2,... of the corresponding hyperelliptic Riemann surface. Each of these systems can be integrated by the so called hodograph transform introduced by Tsarev. A key step in the integration process is the solution of the Tsarev linear overdetermined system. For each $g>0$, we construct the unique solution of the Tsarev system, which matches the genus $g+1$ and $g-1$ solutions on the transition boundaries. Next we characterize initial data such that the solution of the Whitham equations has genus $g\leq N$, $N>0$, for all real $t\geq 0$ and $x$.
