ANTIHEROES-PRODIGE: Quantifying the connection from envelope to disk with the IRAM 30m telescope and NOEMA I. Attack of the streamers: L1448N's fight for order in the chaos

Star formation is a hierarchical process ranging from molecular clouds down to individual protostars. In particular how infalling asymmetric structures, called streamers, delivering new material onto protostellar systems, are connected to the surrounding envelope is not understood. We investigate the connection between the cloud material at 10000 au scales down to 300 au scales towards L1448N in the Perseus star-forming region hosting three young Class 0/I protostellar systems. Sensitive molecular line observations taken with the IRAM 30m telescope and NOEMA at 1.4 mm are used to study the kinematic properties in the region traced by the molecular lines. Several infalling streamers are associated with the protostellar systems, some of them traced by C18O and DCN, while one of them is bright in SO and SO2. The kinematic properties of the former streamers are consistent with the velocities observed at large envelope scales of 10000 au, while the latter case show different kinematics. The masses and infall rates of the streamers are 0.01 Msun and 0.01-0.1 Msun and 10^-6 Msun/yr and 5-18x10^-6 Msun/yr for IRS3A and IRS3C, respectively. The envelope mass in the L1448N region is ~16Msun, thus the mass of a single streamer is low compared to the envelope mass (<1%). However, compared to the estimated mass of the protostellar systems a single streamer could deliver up to 1% and 8-17% of mass towards IRS3A (M*~1.2 Msun) and IRS3C (M*~1 Msun), respectively. The rotational signatures of structures in L1448N are all connected - from the large-scale envelope, infalling streamers, down to the rotation of all three disks. Two of the three Class 0/I protostellar systems are still fed by this surrounding material, which can be associated to the remnant envelope. However, we also find a streamer that is bright in SO and SO2 towards IRS3C that could be connected to a nearby sulfur reservoir.

PRODIGE -- envelope to disk with NOEMA. IV. An infalling gas bridge surrounding two Class 0/I systems in L1448N

Context. The formation of stars has been subject to extensive studies in the past decades from molecular cloud to protoplanetary disk scales. It is still not fully understood how the surrounding material in a protostellar system, that often shows asymmetric structures with complex kinematic properties, feeds the central protostar(s) and their disk(s). Aims. We study the spatial morphology and kinematic properties of the molecular gas surrounding the IRS3A and IRS3B protostellar systems in the L1448N region located in the Perseus molecular cloud. Methods. We present 1 mm NOEMA observations of the PRODIGE large program and analyze the kinematic properties of molecular lines. Given the complexity of the spectral profiles, the lines are fitted with up to three Gaussian velocity components. The clustering algorithm DBSCAN is used to disentangle the velocity components into the underlying physical structure. Results. We discover an extended gas bridge (~3000 au) surrounding both the IRS3A and IRS3B systems in six molecular line tracers (C18O, SO, DCN, H2CO, HC3N, and CH3OH). This gas bridge is oriented along the northeast-southwest direction and shows clear velocity gradients on the order of 100 km/s/pc towards the IRS3A system. We find that the observed velocity profile is consistent with analytical streamline models of gravitational infall towards IRS3A. The high-velocity C18O (2-1) emission towards IRS3A indicates a protostellar mass of ~1.2 Msun. Conclusions. While high angular resolution continuum data often show IRS3A and IRS3B in isolation, molecular gas observations reveal that these systems are still embedded within a large-scale mass reservoir with a complex spatial morphology as well as velocity profiles. The kinematic properties of the extended gas bridge are consistent with gravitational infall toward the IRS3A protostar.

PRODIGE -- Envelope to disk with NOEMA I. A 3000 au streamer feeding a Class I protostar

Context. In the past few years, there has been a rise in the detection of streamers, asymmetric flows of material directed toward the protostellar disk with material from outside the star's natal core. It is unclear how they affect the process of mass accretion, in particular beyond the Class 0 phase. Aims. We investigate the gas kinematics around Per-emb-50, a Class I source in the crowded star-forming region NGC 1333. Our goal is to study how the mass infall proceeds from envelope to disk scales in this source. Results. We discover a streamer delivering material toward Per-emb-50 in H$_2$CO and C$^{18}$O emission. The streamer's emission can be well described by the analytic solutions for an infalling parcel of gas along a streamline with conserved angular momentum, both in the image plane and along the line of sight velocities. The streamer has a mean infall rate of $1.3 \times 10^{ -6}$ M$_{ \odot}$ yr$^{ -1}$, $5 -10$ times higher than the current accretion rate of the protostar. SO and SO$_2$ emission reveal asymmetric infall motions in the inner envelope, additional to the streamer around Per-emb-50. Furthermore, the presence of SO$_2$ could mark the impact zone of the infalling material. Conclusions. The streamer delivers sufficient mass to sustain the protostellar accretion rate and might produce an accretion burst, which would explain the protostar's high luminosity with respect to other Class I sources. Our results highlight the importance of late infall for protostellar evolution: streamers might provide a significant amount of mass for stellar accretion after the Class 0 phase.

Generation of Thermofield Double States and Critical Ground States with a Quantum Computer

Finite-temperature phases of many-body quantum systems are fundamental to phenomena ranging from condensed-matter physics to cosmology, yet they are generally difficult to simulate. Using an ion trap quantum computer and protocols motivated by the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), we generate nontrivial thermal quantum states of the transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) by preparing thermofield double states at a variety of temperatures. We also prepare the critical state of the TFIM at zero temperature using quantum-classical hybrid optimization. The entanglement structure of thermofield double and critical states plays a key role in the study of black holes, and our work simulates such nontrivial structures on a quantum computer. Moreover, we find that the variational quantum circuits exhibit noise thresholds above which the lowest depth QAOA circuits provide the best results.

Chiral properties of light mesons with $N_f=2+1$ overlap fermions

We present an update of the light meson spectrum with $N_f$=2+1 overlap fermions on a $16^3\times 48$ lattice at five different up and down quark masses and two strange quark masses. Based on our experience with the previous simulation with $N_f=2$, we carry out the chiral extrapolation with the prediction of the chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-next-to leading order. We also check the consistency of our analysis by using alternative chiral extrapolation with a reduced theory in which the strange quark mass is integrated out.

Flavor-singlet mesons in N_f=2+1 QCD with dynamical overlap quarks

We report on our study of flavor-singlet mesons in three-flavor QCD with dynamical overlap quarks. Gauge ensembles are generated on a 16^3 x 48 lattice at a lattice spacing of 0.10 fm with the strange quark masses around its physical value m_s,phys and up and down quark masses down to m_s,phys/5. Connected and disconnected meson correlators are calculated using the all-to-all quark propagator. We present our preliminary results on the spectrum of flavor-singlet pseudoscalar and vector mesons.

Pion form factors from two-flavor lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry

We calculate pion vector and scalar form factors in two-flavor lattice QCD and study the chiral behavior of the vector and scalar radii _{V,S}. Numerical simulations are carried out on a 16^3 x 32 lattice at a lattice spacing of 0.12 fm with quark masses down to \sim m_s/6, where m_s is the physical strange quark mass. Chiral symmetry, which is essential for a direct comparison with chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), is exactly preserved in our calculation at finite lattice spacing by employing the overlap quark action. We utilize the so-called all-to-all quark propagator in order to calculate the scalar form factor including the contributions of disconnected diagrams and to improve statistical accuracy of the form factors. A detailed comparison with ChPT reveals that the next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions to the radii are essential to describe their chiral behavior in the region of quark mass from m_s/6 to m_s/2. Chiral extrapolation based on two-loop ChPT yields _V=0.409(23)(37)fm and _S=0.617(79)(66)fm, which are consistent with phenomenological analysis. We also present our estimates of relevant low-energy constants.

Lattice study of vacuum polarization function and determination of strong coupling constant

We calculate the vacuum polarization functions on the lattice using the overlap fermion formulation.By matching the lattice data at large momentum scales with the perturbative expansion supplemented by Operator Product Expansion (OPE), we extract the strong coupling constant $α_s(μ)$ in two-flavor QCD as $Λ^{(2)}_{\overline{MS}}$ = $0.234(9)(^{+16}_{- 0})$ GeV, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. In addition, from the analysis of the difference between the vector and axial-vector channels, we obtain some of the four-quark condensates.

Topological susceptibility in (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD with overlap fermion

We determine the topological susceptibility χ_t in the topologically-trivial sector generated by lattice simulations of N_f = 2+1 QCD with overlap Dirac fermion, on a 16^3 x 48 lattice with lattice spacing ~ 0.11 fm, for five sea quark masses m_q ranging from m_s/6 to m_s (where m_s is the physical strange quark mass). The χ_t is extracted from the plateau (at large time separation) of the 2-point and 4-point time-correlation functions of the flavor-singlet pseudoscalar meson η', which arises from the finite size effect due to fixed topology. In the small m_q regime, our result of χ_t agrees with the chiral effective theory. Using the formula χ_t = Σ(m_u^{-1} + m_d^{-1} + m_s^{-1})^{-1} by Leutwyler-Smilga, we obtain the chiral condensate Σ^{MSbar}(2 GeV) = [249(4)(2) MeV]^3.

Convergence of the chiral expansion in two-flavor lattice QCD

We test the convergence property of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) using a lattice QCD calculation of pion mass and decay constant with two dynamical quark flavors. The lattice calculation is performed using the overlap fermion formulation, which realizes exact chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacing. By comparing various expansion prescriptions, we find that the chiral expansion is well saturated at the next-to-leading order (NLO) for pions lighter than $\sim$450 MeV. Better convergence behavior is found in particular for a resummed expansion parameter $ξ$, with which the lattice data in the pion mass region 290$\sim$750 MeV can be fitted well with the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) formulae. We obtain the results in two-flavor QCD for the low energy constants $\bar{l}_3$ and $\bar{l}_4$ as well as the pion decay constant, the chiral condensate, and the average up and down quark mass.

Pion vector and scalar form factors with dynamical overlap quarks

We calculate the pion vector and scalar form factors in two-flavor QCD. Gauge configurations are generated with dynamical overlap quarks on a 16^3 x 32 lattice at a lattice spacing of 0.12 fm with sea quark masses down to a sixth of the physical strange quark mass. Contributions of disconnected diagrams to the scalar form factor is calculated employing the all-to-all quark propagators. We present a detailed comparison of the vector and scalar radii with chiral perturbation theory to two loops.

Light meson spectrum with $N_f=2+1$ dynamical overlap fermions

We report on a numerical simulation with 2+1 dynamical flavors of overlap fermions. We calculate pseudo-scalar masses and decay constants on a $16^3\times 48 \times (0.11 {\rm fm})^4$ lattice at five different up and down quark masses and two strange quark masses. The lightest pion mass corresponds to $\approx 310$ MeV. We also study the validity of the chiral perturbation theory using the results of the numerical simulation with two dynamical flavors and conclude that the one-loop formulae cannot be directly applied in the strange quark mass region. We therefore extrapolate our 2+1-flavor results to the chiral limit by fitting the data to the two-loop formulae of the chiral perturbation theory.

Topological susceptibility in 2-flavor lattice QCD with fixed topology

We determine the topological susceptibility $ χ_t $ in the trivial topological sector generated by lattice simulations of two-flavor QCD with overlap Dirac fermion, on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice with lattice spacing $\sim$ 0.12 fm, at six sea quark masses $m_q$ ranging from $m_s/6$ to $m_s$ (where $m_s$ is the physical strange quark mass). The $ χ_t $ is extracted from the plateau (at large time separation) of the time-correlation function of the flavor-singlet pseudoscalar meson ($η'$), which arises from the finite size effect due to fixed topology. In the small $m_q$ regime, our result of $χ_t$ is proportional to $m_q$ as expected from chiral effective theory. Using the formula $χ_t=m_qΣ/N_f$ by Leutwyler-Smilga, we obtain the chiral condensate in $N_f=2$ QCD as $Σ^{\bar{\mathrm{MS}}}(\mathrm{2 GeV})=[252(5)(10) \mathrm{MeV}]^3 $, in good agreement with our previous result obtained in the $ε$-regime.

Topological susceptibility in two-flavor lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry

We determine the topological susceptibility $χ_t$ in two-flavor QCD using the lattice simulations at a fixed topological sector. The topological charge density is unambiguously defined on the lattice using the overlap-Dirac operator which possesses exact chiral symmetry. Simulations are performed on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice at lattice spacing $\sim$ 0.12 fm at six sea quark masses $m_q$ ranging in $m_s/6$--$m_s$ with $m_s$ the physical strange quark mass. The $χ_t$ is extracted from the constant behavior of the time-correlation of flavor-singlet pseudo-scalar meson two-point function at large distances, which arises from the finite size effect due to the fixed topology. In the small $m_q$ regime, our result of $χ_t$ is proportional to $m_q$ as expected from chiral effective theory. Using the formula $χ_t=m_qΣ/N_f$ by Leutwyler-Smilga, we obtain the chiral condensate in $N_f=2$ QCD as $Σ^{\bar{\mathrm{MS}}}(\mathrm{2 GeV}) = [252(5)(10) \mathrm{MeV}]^3 $, in good agreement with our previous result obtained in the $ε$-regime.
