The Strongly Interacting $WW$ System: Gold--Plated Modes

In this paper we survey the signals and backgrounds for a strongly-interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector at hadron supercolliders in the TeV region. We study the process pp->WWX, and compute the rates for the ``gold-plated'' channels, where W^{+/-}->l^{+/-}νand Z -> l^+l^- (l = e,μ), for a wide variety of models. Using a forward jet-tag, a central jet-veto and a back-to-back lepton cut to suppress the Standard Model backgrounds, we demonstrate that the SSC and LHC have substantial sensitivity to strong interactions in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector.

QCD Corrections to Hadronic $Wγ$ Production with Non-standard $WWγ$ Couplings

The process $p \pbar \rightarrow W^{\pm}γ+ X \rightarrow \ell^\pm νγ+ X$ is calculated to ${\cal O}(α_s)$ for general $CP$ conserving $WWγ$ couplings. At the Tevatron center of mass energy, the QCD corrections to $Wγ$ production are modest, and the Born and inclusive ${\cal O}(α_s)$ cross sections have similar sensitivities to the effects of anomalous couplings. At supercollider energies, the inclusive QCD corrections are large at high photon transverse momenta, reducing the sensitivity to non-standard $WWγ$ couplings by up to a factor~2. The size of the QCD corrections can be reduced significantly, and a large fraction of the sensitivity lost can be regained, if a jet veto is imposed.

Finding the Leptonic $WW$ Decay Mode of a Heavy Higgs Boson

We reanalyze the extraction of the heavy Higgs boson signal $H\rightarrow W^+W^-\rightarrow \bar\ellν,\ell\barν$ $(\ell=e\hbox{ or }μ)$ from the Standard Model background at hadron supercolliders, taking into account revised estimates of the top quark background. With new acceptance criteria the detection of the signal remains viable. Requiring a forward jet-tag, a central jet-veto, and a large relative transverse momentum of the two charged leptons yields $S/\sqrt B>6$ for one year of running at the SSC or LHC.

Structure Function Approach to Vector-Boson Scattering in pp Collisions

We discuss weak-vector-boson scattering, at next-to-leading order in QCD, within the framework of hadronic structure functions. We use this approach to calculate the Higgs-boson production cross section via vector-boson fusion at the LHC/SSC; we find a modest increase over the leading-order prediction. We also give expressions for the distribution of vector bosons in a proton (effective-$W$ approximation) including ${\cal O} (α_s)$ corrections.

Test of the Dimopouos-Hall-Raby Ansatz for Fermion Mass Matrices

By evolution of fermion mass matrices of the Fritzsch and the Georgi-Jarlskog forms from the supersymmetric grand unified scale, DHR obtained predictions for the quark masses and mixings. Using Monte Carlo methods we test these predictions against the latest determinations of the mixings, the CP-violating parameter epsilon_K and the B_d^0--Bbar_d^0 mixing parameter r_d. The acceptable solutions closely specify the quark masses and mixings, but lie at the edges of allowed regions at 90% confidence level.
