Equation of state at finite density in two-flavor QCD with improved Wilson quarks

We study the equation of state in two-flavor QCD at finite temperature and density. Simulations are made with the RG-improved gluon action and the clover-improved Wilson quark action. Along the lines of constant physics for $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V} = 0.65$ and 0.80, we compute the derivatives of the quark determinant with respect to the quark chemical potential $μ_q$ up to the fourth order at $μ_q=0$. We adopt several improvement techniques in the evaluation. We study thermodynamic quantities and quark number susceptibilities at finite $μ_q$ using these derivatives. We find enhancement of the quark number susceptibility at finite $μ_q$, in accordance with previous observations using staggered-type quarks. This suggests the existence of a nearby critical point.

Nuclear Force from Monte Carlo Simulations of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics

The nuclear force acting between protons and neutrons is studied in the Monte Carlo simulations of the fundamental theory of the strong interaction, the quantum chromodynamics defined on the hypercubic space-time lattice. After a brief summary of the empirical nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials which can fit the NN scattering experiments in high precision, we outline the basic formulation to derive the potential between the extended objects such as the nucleons composed of quarks. The equal-time Bethe-Salpeter amplitude is a key ingredient for defining the NN potential on the lattice. We show the results of the numerical simulations on a $32^4$ lattice with the lattice spacing $a \simeq 0.137 $fm (lattice volume (4.4 fm)$^4$) in the quenched approximation. The calculation was carried out using the massively parallel computer Blue Gene/L at KEK. We found that the calculated NN potential at low energy has basic features expected from the empirical NN potentials; attraction at long and medium distances and the repulsive core at short distance. Various future directions along this line of research are also summarized.

In-medium Pion and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry

The partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium is investigated in a model independent way by exploiting operator relations in QCD. An exact sum rule is derived for the quark condensate valid for all density. This sum rule is simplified at low density to a new relation with the in-medium quark condensate *, in-medium pion decay constant F_{pi}^t and in-medium pion wave-function renormalization Z_{pi}*. Calculating Z_{pi}*at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data and relating F_{pi}^t to the isovector pion-nucleus scattering length b_1^*, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleus interaction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms directly implies the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowledge of the in-medium pion mass m_{pi}* is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

Thermodynamics of SU(3) gauge theory at fixed lattice spacing

We study thermodynamics of SU(3) gauge theory at fixed scales on the lattice, where we vary temperature by changing the temporal lattice size N_t=(Ta_t)^{-1}. In the fixed scale approach, finite temperature simulations are performed on common lattice spacings and spatial volumes. Consequently, we can isolate thermal effects in observables from other uncertainties, such as lattice artifact, renormalization factor, and spatial volume effect. Furthermore, in the EOS calculations, the fixed scale approach is able to reduce computational costs for zero temperature subtraction and parameter search to find lines of constant physics, which are demanding in full QCD simulations. As a test of the approach, we study the thermodynamics of the SU(3) gauge theory on isotropic and anisotropic lattices. In addition to the equation of state, we calculate the critical temperature and the static quark free energy at a fixed scale.

Lattice QCD approach to nuclear force

We present our updated results of the nucleon-nucleon potential in quenched lattice QCD simulations with the plaquette gauge action and the Wilson quark action on the 32^4(\simeq (4.4 fm)^4) lattice. From the equal-time Bethe-Salpeter (BS) wave function, the NN potential is constructed through the Schroedinger-type equation. Resulting NN potential has all the qualitative features which phenomenological potentials commonly have: the repulsive core at short distance and the attractive well at medium and long distances. In the L \to \infty limit, our NN potential is guaranteed to reproduce the scattering length obtained from the Luescher's formula. The quark mass dependence of the NN potential is studied with m_{pi} \sim 380, 529, 731 MeV. The results suggest that both the repulsive core at short distance and the attractive well at medium distance are enhanced in the light quark mass region.

Hyperon-nucleon potentials from lattice QCD

We calculate $pΞ^0$ potentials from the equal-time Bethe-Salpeter amplitude measured in the quenched QCD simulation with the spatial lattice volume, (4.4 fm)$^3$. The standard Wilson gauge action with the gauge coupling $β=5.7$ on $32^4$ lattice together with the standard Wilson quark action are used. The hopping parameter $κ_{ud}=0.1678$ is chosen for $u$ and $d$ quarks, which corresponds to $m_π\simeq 0.37$ GeV. The physical strange quark mass is used by taking the parameter $κ_s=0.1643$ which is deduced from the physical $K$ meson mass. The lattice spacing $a=0.1420$ fm is determined by the physical $ρ$ meson mass. We find that the $pΞ^0$ potential has strong spin dependence. Strong repulsive core is found in $^1S_0$ channel while the effective central potential in the $^3S_1$ channel has relatively weak repulsive core. The potentials also have weak attractive parts in the medium to long distance region (0.6 fm $\lsim r \lsim 1.2$ fm) in both of the $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$ channels.

Thermodynamics and heavy-quark free energies at finite temperature and density with two flavors of improved Wilson quarks

Thermodynamics of two-flavor QCD at finite temperature and density is studied on a $16^3 \times 4$ lattice, using a renormalization group improved gauge action and the clover improved Wilson quark action. In the simulations along lines of constant $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V}$, we calculate the Taylor expansion coefficients of the heavy-quark free energy with respect to the quark chemical potential ($μ_q$) up to the second order. By comparing the expansion coefficients of the free energies between quark($Q$)and antiquark($\bar{Q}$), and between $Q$ and $Q$, we find a characteristic difference at finite $μ_q$ due to the first order coefficient of the Taylor expansion. We also calculate the quark number and isospin susceptibilities, and find that the second order coefficient of the quark number susceptibility shows enhancement around the pseudo-critical temperature.

Onset of $J/ψ$ Melting in Quark-Gluon Fluid at RHIC

A strong $J/ψ$ suppression in central Au+Au collisions has been observed by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We develop a hydro+$J/ψ$ model in which hot quark-gluon matter is described by the full (3+1)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics and $J/ψ$ is treated as an impurity traversing through the matter. The experimental $J/ψ$ suppression pattern in mid-rapidity is reproduced well by the sequential melting of $χ_{\rm c}$, $ψ'$, and $J/ψ$ in dynamically expanding fluid. The melting temperature of directly produced $J/ψ$ is well constrained by the participant-number dependence of the $J/ψ$ suppression and is found to be about $2.T_{\rm c}$ with $T_{\rm c}$ being the pseudo-critical temperature.

Nuclear Force from Lattice QCD

Nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential is studied by lattice QCD simulations in the quenched approximation, using the plaquette gauge action and the Wilson quark action on a 32^4 (\simeq (4.4 fm)^4) lattice. A NN potential V_{NN}(r) is defined from the equal-time Bethe-Salpeter amplitude with a local interpolating operator for the nucleon. By studying the NN interaction in the ^1S_0 and ^3S_1 channels, we show that the central part of V_{NN}(r) has a strong repulsive core of a few hundred MeV at short distances (r \alt 0.5 fm) surrounded by an attractive well at medium and long distances. These features are consistent with the known phenomenological features of the nuclear force.

In-medium Pions and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry: a model-independent analysis

Exploiting operator relations in QCD, we derive a novel and model-independent formula relating the in-medium quark condensate * to the decay constant F*_t and the wave function renormalization constant Z* of the pion in the nuclear medium. Evaluating Z* at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleusinteraction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms implies directly the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowlege of the in-medium pion mass is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

Stau-catalyzed $^6$Li Production in Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis

If the gravitino mass is in the region from a few GeV to a few 10's GeV, the scalar lepton X such as stau is most likely the next lightest supersymmetry particle. The negatively charged and long-lived X^- may form a Coulomb bound state (A X) with a nucleus A and may affect the big-bang nucleosynthesis through catalyzed fusion process. We calculate a production cross section of Li6 from the catalyzed fusion (He4 X^-) + d \to Li6 + X^- by solving the Schrödinger equation exactly for three-body system of He4, d, and X. We utilize the state-of-the-art coupled-channel method, which is known to be very accurate to describe other three-body systems in nuclear and atomic reactions. The importance of the use of appropriate nuclear potential and the exact treatment of the quantum tunneling in the fusion process are emphasized. We find that the astrophysical S-factor at the Gamow peak corresponding to T=10 keV is 0.038 MeV barn. This leads to the Li6 abundance from the catalyzed process as Li6|_{CBBN}\simeq 4.3\times 10^{-11} (D/2.8\times 10^{-5}) ([n_{X^-}/s]/10^{-16}) in the limit of long lifetime of X. Particle physics implication of this result is also discussed.

Heavy-Quark Free Energy, Debye Mass, and Spatial String Tension at Finite Temperature in Two Flavor Lattice QCD with Wilson Quark Action

We study Polyakov loop correlations and spatial Wilson loop at finite Temperature in two-flavor QCD simulations with the RG-improved gluon action and the clover-improved Wilson quark action on a $ 16^3 \times 4$ lattice. From the line of constant physics at $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V}=0.65$ and 0.80, we extract the heavy-quark free energies, the effective running coupling $g_{\rm eff}(T)$ and the Debye screening mass $m_D(T)$ for various color channels of heavy quark--quark and quark--anti-quark pairs above the critical temperature. The free energies are well approximated by the screened Coulomb form with the appropriate Casimir factors at high temperature. The magnitude and the temperature dependence of the Debye mass are compared to those of the next-to-leading order thermal perturbation theory and to a phenomenological formula in terms of $g_{\rm eff}(T)$. We make a comparison between our results with the Wilson quark action and the previous results with the staggered quark action. The spatial string tension is also studied in the high temperature phase and is compared to the next-to-next-leading order prediction in an effective theory with dimensional reduction.

We evaluate the critical temperature of two flavor QCD in the chiral limit at zero chemical potential and show the preliminary result. Also we discuss fluctuations at none-zero temperature and density by calculating the quark number and isospin susceptibilities and their derivatives with respect to chemical potential.

Hadron-quark continuity induced by the axial anomaly in dense QCD

We investigate the interplay between the chiral and diquark condensates on the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau potential with QCD symmetry. We demonstrate that the axial anomaly drives a new critical point at low temperature in the QCD phase diagram and leads to a smooth crossover between the hadronic and color superconducting phases.

Stau-catalyzed Nuclear Fusion

We point out that the stau may play a role of a catalyst for nuclear fusions if the stau is a long-lived particle as in the scenario of gravitino dark matter. In this letter, we consider d d fusion under the influence of stau where the fusion is enhanced because of a short distance between the two deuterons. We find that one chain of the d d fusion may release an energy of O(10) GeV per stau. We discuss problems of making the stau-catalyzed nuclear fusion of practical use with the present technology of producing stau.

Equation of state for two-flavor QCD with an improved Wilson quark action at non-zero chemical potential

The QCD thermodynamics on the lattice provides fundamental theoretical grounds to analyze the various experimental data in relativistic heavy ion collisions. So far, most of the numerical simulations on the lattice have been performed by using the staggered-type fermion actions. Therefore it is important to carry out studies using different fermion formulations to test the uncertainties of the lattice QCD results. For this purpose, we perform systematic simulations of two-flavor QCD with an improved Wilson quark action to investigate the equation of state. We report the current status of our project and show the preliminary results of the Taylor expansion coefficients of the thermodynamic grand partition function in terms of chemical potential.
