Modeling Dipolar Post-Shock Accretion Columns for Various Specific Accretion Rate Intermediate Polars

We model the post-shock accretion column (PSAC) for intermediate polars (IPs), with parameterizing specific accretion rate between 0.0001 and 100 g cm-2 s-1 and metal abundance between 0.1 and 2 times of solar abundance, and taking into account the gravitational potential and non-equipartition between ions, electrons and ionization degree. We assume the cylinder and dipole as geometry of the PSAC. The PSAC becomes higher against the white dwarf (WD) radius for lower specific accretion rate and more massive WD, and may be comparable to the WD radius. The consideration of the dipolar geometry significantly reduces the density and temperature over the whole PSAC comparing with the cylindrical case when the specific accretion rate is lower than a threshold which the PSAC height reachs 0.2 RWD with and is decreased by the more massive white dwarf. We calculate the spectra of the cylindrical and dipolar PSACs with the wide range of the specific accretion rate. Although the spectra soften as the specific accretion rate decreases for the both geometrical assumptions under the specific accretion rate threshold, the softening is more speedy for the dipolar PSAC. The fact means that the both geometrical assumptions lead the different WD masses for each other when their spectra are applied to the IPs hosting the low accretion or a massive WD. Although the ionization non-equilibrium are also involved for the spectral calculation, the effects are trivial because the radiation from ionization non-equilibrium plasma is a few percent of the whole at most.

The proton momentum distribution in strongly H-bonded phases of water; a critical test of electrostatic models

Water is often viewed as a collection of monomers interacting electrostatically with each other. We compare the water proton momentum distributions from recent neutron scattering data with those calculated from two electronic structure based models. We find that below 500 K the electrostatic models are not able to even qualitatively account for the sizable vibrational zero-point contribution to the enthalpy of vaporization. This discrepancy is evidence that the change in the proton well upon solvation cannot be entirely explained by electrostatic effects alone.

X-ray observation of AM Herculis in a very low state with Suzaku

The X-ray observation of AM Her in a very low state was performed with {\it Suzaku} in October 2008. One flare event with a time scale of $\sim$ 3700 sec was detected at the X-ray luminosity of $6.0 \times 10^{29} {\rm ~erg ~sec}^{-1}$ in the 0.5 -- 10 keV band assuming at a distance of 91 pc. The X-ray spectrum is represented by a thermal plasma emission model with a temperature of $8.67_{-1.14}^{+1.31}$ keV. During the quiescence out of the flare interval, {\it Suzaku} also detected significant X-rays at a luminosity of $1.7 \times 10^{29} {\rm ~erg ~sec}^{-1}$ in the 0.5 -- 10 keV band, showing a clear spin modulation at a period of 0.1289273(2) days at BJD 2454771.581. The X-ray spectra in the quiescence were represented by a MEKAL + Power Law (PL) model or a single CEMEKL model, which are also supported by phase-resolved analyses. A correlation between the temperature and the volume emission measure was found together with historical X-ray measurements of AM Her in various states. In order to account for a possible non-thermal emission from AM Her, particle acceleration mechanisms in the AM Her system are also discussed, including a new proposal of a shock acceleration process on the top of the accretion column.

A triple quantum dot in a single wall carbon nanotube

A top-gated single wall carbon nanotube is used to define three coupled quantum dots in series between two electrodes. The additional electron number on each quantum dot is controlled by top-gate voltages allowing for current measurements of single, double and triple quantum dot stability diagrams. Simulations using a capacitor model including tunnel coupling between neighboring dots captures the observed behavior with good agreement. Furthermore, anti-crossings between indirectly coupled levels and higher order cotunneling are discussed.

Discovery of a WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Nova, SDSS J102146.44+234926.3: Unprecedented Infrared Activity during a Rebrightening Phase

Several SU UMa-type dwarf novae, in particular, WZ Sge-type stars tend to exhibit rebrightenings after superoutbursts. The rebrightening phenomenon is problematic for the disk instability theory of dwarf novae since it requires a large amount of remnant matter in the disk even after superoutbursts. Here, we report our optical and infrared observations during the first-ever outburst of a new dwarf nova, SDSS J102146.44+234926.3. During the outburst, we detected superhumps with a period of 0.056281 +/- 0.000015 d, which is typical for superhump periods in WZ Sge stars. In conjunction with the appearance of a long-lived rebrightening, we conclude that the object is a new member of WZ Sge stars. Our observations, furthermore, revealed infrared behaviors for the first time in the rebrightening phase of WZ Sge stars. We discovered prominent infrared superhumps. We calculate the color temperature of the infrared superhump source to be 4600-6400 K. These temperatures are too low to be explained with a fully-ionized disk appearing during dwarf nova outbursts. We also found a Ks-band excess over the hot disk component. These unprecedented infrared activities provide evidence for the presence of mass reservoir at the outermost part of the accretion disk. We propose that a moderately high mass-accretion rate at this infrared active region leads to the long-lived rebrightening observed in SDSS J102146.44+234926.3.

Pauli spin blockade in cotunneling transport through a double quantum dot

We study spin correlation in a double quantum dot containing a few electrons in each dot (around 10). Clear current rectification with negative differential conductance is observed in the cotunneling regime, which is well explained by a Pauli spin blockade. The current feature is discussed in connection with exchange singlet-triplet splitting based on two simple models, one of which takes coherent interdot coupling and the other incoherent interdot coupling into account.

Electrical pump-and-probe study of spin singlet-triplet relaxation in a quantum dot

Spin relaxation from a triplet excited state to a singlet ground state in a semiconductor quantum dot is studied by employing an electrical pump-and-probe method. Spin relaxation occurs via cotunneling when the tunneling rate is relatively large, confirmed by a characteristic square dependence of the relaxation rate on the tunneling rate. When cotunneling is suppressed by reducing the tunneling rate, the intrinsic spin relaxation is dominated by spin-orbit interaction. We discuss a selection rule of the spin-orbit interaction based on the observed double-exponential decay of the triplet state.

Boson and Fermion Brownian Motion

Dynamics of quantum systems which are perturbed by linear coupling to the reservoir stochastically can be studied in terms of quantum stochastic differential equations (for example, quantum stochastic Liouville equation and quantum Langevin equation). To work it out one needs definition of quantum Brownian motion. Since till very recent times only its boson version has been known, in present paper we demonstrate definition which makes possible consideration also for fermion Brownian motion.

A search for deeply bound kaonic nuclear states

We have measured proton and neutron energy spectra by stopping negative kaons on liquid helium4. Two distinct peak structures were found on both spectra, which were assigned to the formation of new kinds of strange stribaryons. In this paper, we summarize both results.

Indication of a strange tribaryon S^+ from the ^4He(stopped K^-,n) reaction

We measured the neutron time-of-flight spectrum in the ^4He(stopped K^-, n) reaction by stopping negative kaons in a superfluid helium target. A clear enhancement was observed in the neutron spectrum, which indicates the formation of a strange tribaryon of charge +1 with a mass and width of M = 3141 +/- 3 (stat.) +4/-1 (sys.) MeV/c^2 and G < 23 MeV/c^2. This state, denoted as S^+(3140), is about 25 MeV/c^2 higher than the previously observed S^0(3115) T=1.

A Study of the Distribution of Star-Forming Regions in Luminous Infrared Galaxies by Means of H$α$ Imaging Observations

We performed H-alpha imaging observations of 22 luminous infrared galaxies to investigate how the distribution of star-forming regions in these galaxies is related to galaxy interactions. Based on correlation diagrams between H-alpha flux and continuum emission for individual galaxies, a sequence for the distribution of star-forming regions was found: very compact (~100 pc) nuclear starbursts with almost no star-forming activity in the outer regions (type 1), dominant nuclear starbursts < 1 kpc in size and a negligible contribution from the outer regions (type 2), nuclear starbursts > 1 kpc in size and a significant contribution from the outer regions (type 3), and extended starbursts with relatively faint nuclei (type 4). These classes of star-forming region were found to be strongly related to global star-forming properties such as star-formation efficiency, far-infrared color, and dust extinction. There was a clear tendency for the objects with more compact distributions of star-forming regions to show a higher star-formation efficiency and hotter far-infrared color. An appreciable fraction of the sample objects were dominated by extended starbursts (type 4), which is unexpected in the standard scenario of interaction-induced starburst galaxies. We also found that the distribution of star-forming regions was weakly but clearly related to galaxy morphology: severely disturbed objects had a more concentrated distribution of star-forming regions. This suggests that the properties of galaxy interactions, such as dynamical phase and orbital parameters, play a more important role than the internal properties of progenitor galaxies, such as dynamical structure or gas mass fraction. We also discuss the evolution of the distribution of star-forming regions in interacting galaxies.

Quantum stochastic differential equations for boson and fermion systems -- Method of Non-Equilibrium Thermo Field Dynamics

A unified canonical operator formalism for quantum stochastic differential equations, including the quantum stochastic Liouville equation and the quantum Langevin equation both of the Itô and the Stratonovich types, is presented within the framework of Non-Equilibrium Thermo Field Dynamics (NETFD). It is performed by introducing an appropriate martingale operator in the Schrödinger and the Heisenberg representations with fermionic and bosonic Brownian motions. In order to decide the double tilde conjugation rule and the thermal state conditions for fermions, a generalization of the system consisting of a vector field and Faddeev-Popov ghosts to dissipative open situations is carried out within NETFD.

Non-Anomalous Flavor Symmetries and $SU(6) \times SU(2)_R$ Model

We introduce the flavor symmetry ${\bf Z}_M \times {\bf Z}_N \times D_4$ into the $SU(6) \times SU(2)_R$ string-inspired model. The cyclic group ${\bf Z}_M$ and the dihedral group $D_4$ are R symmetries, while ${\bf Z}_N$ is a non-R symmetry. By imposing the anomaly-free conditions on the model, we obtain a viable solution under many phenomenological constraints coming from the particle spectra. For neutrino sector, we find a LMA-MSW solution but not SMA-MSW ones. The solution includes phenomenologically acceptable results concerning fermion masses and mixings and also concerning hierarchical energy scales including the GUT scale, the $μ$ scale and the Majorana mass scale of R-handed neutrinos.

Self-trapped states and the related luminescence in PbCl$_2$ crystals

We have comprehensively investigated localized states of photoinduced electron-hole pairs with electron-spin-resonance technique and photoluminescence (PL) in a wide temperature range of 5-200 K. At low temperatures below 70 K, holes localize on Pb$^{2+}$ ions and form self-trapping hole centers of Pb$^{3+}$. The holes transfer to other trapping centers above 70 K. On the other hand, electrons localize on two Pb$^{2+}$ ions at higher than 50 K and form self-trapping electron centers of Pb$_2$$^{3+}$. From the thermal stability of the localized states and PL, we clarify that blue-green PL band at 2.50 eV is closely related to the self-trapped holes.

Topological Obstruction in Block-spin Transformations

Block-spin transformations from a fine lattice to a coarse one are shown to give rise to a one-to-one correspondence between the zero-modes of the Ginsparg-Wilson Dirac operators. The index is then preserved under the blocking process. Such a one-to-one correspondence is violated and the block-spin transformation becomes necessarily ill-defined when the absolute value of the index is larger than 2rN, where N is the number of the sites on the coarse lattice and r is the dimension of the gauge group representation of the fermion variables.

Spin-Vacancy-Induced Long-Range Order in a New Haldane-Gap Antiferromagnet

Magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are used to study the magnetic properties of a new S=1 quasi-1-dimensional antiferromagnet PbNi2V2O8. Inter-chain interactions are shown to be almost, but not quite, strong enough to destroy the nonmagnetic singlet ground state and the energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Substituting nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ (S=0) ions for Ni$^{2+}$ (S=1) induces a magnetically ordered state at low temperatures. To our knowledge this is the first observation of doping-induced long-range order in a Haldane-gap system.

Similarity and Difference between Magnetic- and Nonmagnetic-Impurity Effects in Spin-Peierls Cuprate CuGeO_3

We have measured the magnetic susceptibility of single-crystal Cu_{1-x}Ni_xGeO_3 to study doping effects of the magnetic impurity (Ni^{2+} has S=1 spin) on the inorganic spin-Peierls (SP) material CuGeO_3. We observed the disappearance of the SP transition and the abrupt increase of the Neel temperature from 2.5 to 3.4 K at x nearly equal to 0.020, which indicates the first-order phase transition between the dimerized-antiferromagnetic (D-AF) and the uniform-antiferromagnetic (U-AF) phases, as was discovered in Mg-doped (Mg^{2+} is nonmagnetic) system [T. Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 4566 (1998)]. This indicates that this transition is universal for the doping to Cu site. We also found another phase with the easy axis in the a-c plane in low x region.

Neutron Electric Dipole Momento in Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

The effect of the "chromo-electric" dipole moment on the electric dipole moment(EDM) of the neutron is studied in the two-Higgs-doublet model. The Weinberg's operator $O_{3g}=GG\t G$ and the operator $O_{qg}=\bar qσ\t Gq$ are both investigated in the cases of $\tan\b\gg 1$, $\tan\b\ll 1$ and $\tan\b\simeq 1$. The neutron EDM is considerably reduced due to the destructive contribution with two light Higgs scalars exchanges.
