Measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry for $B^0\to J/ψπ^0$ decays

We measure the branching fraction and time-dependent $CP$-violating asymmetry for $B^0\to J/ψπ^0$ decays using a data sample of 711 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ collected on the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle experiment running at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to J/ψπ^0) = [1.62\,\pm 0.11~({\rm stat}) \pm0.07~({\rm syst})]\times 10^{-5}$, which is the most precise measurement to date. The measured $CP$ asymmetry parameters are $\mathcal{S} = -0.59\,\pm 0.19~({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03~({\rm syst})$ and $\mathcal{A} = -0.15\,\pm 0.14~({\rm stat})\,^{+0.04}_{-0.03}~({\rm syst})$. The mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetry ($\mathcal{S}$) differs from the case of no $CP$ violation by 3.0 standard deviations, and the direct $CP$ asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}$) is consistent with zero.

Measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization and $R(D^*)$ in the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ with one-prong hadronic $τ$ decays at Belle

With the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider, the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ is studied with the hadronic $τ$ decays $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. The $τ$ polarization $P_τ(D^*)$ in two-body hadronic $τ$ decays is measured, as well as the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}(\bar {B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ) / \mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- \barν_\ell)$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon. Our results, $P_τ(D^*) = -0.38 \pm 0.51 {\rm (stat)} ^{+0.21}_{-0.16} {\rm (syst)}$ and $R(D^*) = 0.270 \pm 0.035{\rm (stat)} ^{+0.028}_{-0.025}{\rm (syst)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model. The polarization values of $P_τ(D^*) > +0.5$ are excluded at the 90\% confidence level.

Magnetic and superconducting properties on S-type single-crystal CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ probed by $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance

We have performed $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance/nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements to investigate the magnetic and superconducting (SC) properties on a "superconductivity dominant" ($S$-type) single crystal of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. Although the development of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations down to 1~K indicated that the AFM criticality was close, Korringa behavior was observed below 0.8~K, and no magnetic anomaly was observed above $T_{\rm c} \sim$ 0.6 K. These behaviors were expected in $S$-type CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. The temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ at zero field was almost identical to that in the previous polycrystalline samples down to 130~mK, but the temperature dependence deviated downward below 120~mK. In fact, $1/T_1$ in the SC state could be fitted with the two-gap $s_{\pm}$-wave rather than the two-gap $s_{++}$-wave model down to 90~mK. Under magnetic fields, the spin susceptibility in both directions clearly decreased below $T_{\rm c}$, indicative of the formation of spin singlet pairing. The residual part of the spin susceptibility was understood by the field-induced residual density of states evaluated from $1/T_1T$, which was ascribed to the effect of the vortex cores. No magnetic anomaly was observed above the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, but the development of AFM fluctuations was observed, indicating that superconductivity was realized in strong AFM fluctuations.

Evidence for Isospin Violation and Measurement of $CP$ Asymmetries in $B \to K^{\ast}(892) γ$

We report the first evidence for isospin violation in $B \to K^* γ$ and the first measurement of difference of $CP$ asymmetries between $B^+ \to K^{*+} γ$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1$σ$, $Δ_{0+} = (+6.2 \pm 1.5 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6 ({\rm syst.}) \pm 1.2 (f_{+-}/f_{00}))$\%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ production in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the SM. The result for the difference of $CP$ asymmetries is $ΔA_{CP} = (+2.4 \pm 2.8({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.5({\rm syst.}))$\%, consistent with zero. The measured branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B$ meson decays are the most precise to date. We also calculate the ratio of branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$ to $B_s^0 \to ϕγ$.

Sympathetic Cooling of Protons and Antiprotons with a Common Endcap Penning Trap

We present an experiment to sympathetically cool protons and antiprotons in a Penning trap by resonantly coupling the particles to laser cooled beryllium ions using a common endcap technique. Our analysis shows that preparation of (anti)protons at mK temperatures on timescales of tens of seconds is feasible. Successful implementation of the technique will have immediate and significant impact on high-precision comparisons of the fundamental properties of protons and antiprotons. This in turn will provide some of the most stringent tests of the fundamental symmetries of the Standard Model.

Measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization and $R(D^*)$ in the decay $\bar{B} \to D^* τ^- \barν_τ$

We report the first measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization $P_τ(D^*)$ in the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}(\bar {B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ) / \mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- \barν_\ell)$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, and the $τ$ is reconstructed in the modes $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our results, $P_τ(D^*) = -0.38 \pm 0.51 {\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.21}_{-0.16} {\rm (syst.)}$ and $R(D^*) = 0.270 \pm 0.035{\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.028}_{-0.025}{\rm (syst.)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model.

Observation of individual spin quantum transitions of a single antiproton

We report on the detection of individual spin quantum transitions of a single trapped antiproton in a Penning trap. The spin-state determination, which is based on the unambiguous detection of axial frequency shifts in presence of a strong magnetic bottle, reaches a fidelity of 92.1$\%$. Spin-state initialization with $>99.9\%$ fidelity and an average initialization time of 24 min are demonstrated. This is a major step towards an antiproton magnetic moment measurement with a relative uncertainty on the part-per-billion level.

Highly-sensitive superconducting circuits at ~700 kHz with tunable quality factors for image-current detection of single trapped antiprotons

We developed highly-sensitive image-current detection systems based on superconducting toroidal coils and ultra-low noise amplifiers for non-destructive measurements of the axial frequencies (550$\sim$800$\,$kHz) of single antiprotons stored in a cryogenic multi-Penning-trap system. The unloaded superconducting tuned circuits show quality factors of up to 500$\,$000, which corresponds to a factor of 10 improvement compared to our previously used solenoidal designs. Connected to ultra-low noise amplifiers and the trap system, signal-to-noise-ratios of 30$\,$dB at quality factors of > 20$\,$000 are achieved. In addition, we have developed a superconducting switch which allows continuous tuning of the detector's quality factor, and to sensitively tune the particle-detector interaction. This allowed us to improve frequency resolution at constant averaging time, which is crucial for single antiproton spin-transition spectroscopy experiments, as well as improved measurements of the proton-to-antiproton charge-to-mass ratio.

BASE - The Baryon Antibaryon Symmetry Experiment

The Baryon Antibaryon Symmetry Experiment (BASE) aims at performing a stringent test of the combined charge parity and time reversal (CPT) symmetry by comparing the magnetic moments of the proton and the antiproton with high precision. Using single particles in a Penning trap, the proton/antiproton $g$-factors, i.e. the magnetic moment in units of the nuclear magneton, are determined by measuring the respective ratio of the spin-precession frequency to the cyclotron frequency. The spin precession frequency is measured by non-destructive detection of spin quantum transitions using the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect, and the cyclotron frequency is determined from the particle's motional eigenfrequencies in the Penning trap using the invariance theorem. By application of the double Penning-trap method we expect that in our measurements a fractional precision of $δg/g$ 10$^{-9}$ can be achieved. The successful application of this method to the antiproton will represent a factor 1000 improvement in the fractional precision of its magnetic moment. The BASE collaboration has constructed and commissioned a new experiment at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) of CERN. This article describes and summarizes the physical and technical aspects of this new experiment.

The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Search for $B^+ \to e^+ ν$ and $B^+ \to μ^+ ν$ decays using hadronic tagging

We present a search for the rare leptonic decays $B^+ \to e^+ ν_e$ and $B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ$, using the full $Υ(4S)$ data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the $\small\textbf{KEKB}$ asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. One of the $B$ mesons from the $Υ(4S) \to B\bar{B}$ decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode, while the recoiling side is analyzed for the signal decay. We find no evidence of a signal in any of the decay modes. Upper limits of the corresponding branching fractions are determined as ${\cal B}(B^+ \to e^+ ν_e)<3.5\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ)<2.7 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90$\%$ confidence level.

Measurement of the $\bar{B} \rightarrow X_s γ$ Branching Fraction with a Sum of Exclusive Decays

We use 772$\times 10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ meson pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector to measure the branching fraction for $\bar{B} \rightarrow X_s γ$. Our measurement uses a sum-of-exclusives approach in which 38 of the hadronic final states with strangeness equal to $+1$, denoted by $X_s$, are reconstructed. The inclusive branching fraction for $M_{X_s}<$ 2.8 GeV/$c^2$, which corresponds to a minimum photon energy of 1.9 GeV, is measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow X_s γ)=(3.51\pm0.17\pm0.33)\times10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of Time-Dependent $CP$ Violation in $B^0\to η'K^0$ Decays

We present a measurement of the time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters in $B^0\toη'K^0$ decays. The measurement is based on the full data sample containing $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance using the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The measured values of the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters are: \begin{align} \sin 2 ϕ^{\rm eff}_1 &= +0.68\pm 0.07 \pm 0.03, \nonumber \\ \mathcal{A}_{η'K^0} &= +0.03\pm 0.05\pm 0.04, \nonumber \end{align} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The values obtained are the most accurate to date. Furthermore, these results are consistent with our previous measurements and with the world-average value of $\sin 2ϕ_1$ measured in $B^0\to J/ψK^0$ decays.}

Observation of the decay $B^0 \to η' K^*(892)^0$

We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of neutral $B$ mesons to $η' K^{*}(892)^{0}$. We also measure the $CP$ violating asymmetry as ${\cal A}_{CP}[B^0\toη' K^{*}(892)^{0}]=-0.22\pm0.29{\rm (stat)}\pm0.07{\rm syst}$.

Study of B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 decays, implications for the CKM angle phi_2 and search for other B^0 decay modes with a four-pion final state

We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0->rho0rho0 and the fraction of longitudinally polarized rho0 mesons in this decay. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find 166 +- 59 B^0 -> rho0 rho0 events (including systematic uncertainties), corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B^0->rho0rho0) = (1.02 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst)) x 10^{-6} with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a longitudinal polarization fraction fL = 0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (stat) +- 0.15 (syst). We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle phi_2 = (84.9 +- 13.5) degrees through an isospin analysis in the B->rhorho system. We furthermore find 149 +- 49 B^0->f0rho0 events, corresponding to B(B^0->f0rho0) x B(f0->pi+pi-) = (0.78 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst)) x 10^{-6}, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations. We find no other significant contribution with the same final state, and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the (product) branching fractions, B(B^0->pi+pi-pi+pi-)<11.2 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->rho0pi+pi-)<12.0 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->f0pi+pi-) x B(f0->pi+pi-) <3.0 x 10^{-6} and B(B^0->f0f0) x B(f0->pi+pi-)^{2} < 0.2 x 10^{-6}.

Observation of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ Mixing in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

We measure the mixing parameters ${x'}^2 = (0.09\pm0.22)\times 10^{-3}$ and $y' = (4.6\pm3.4)\times 10^{-3}$ and the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored decay rates $R_D = (3.53\pm0.13)\times 10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic combined. Our measurement excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at the 5.1 standard deviation level.

Measurement of branching fractions for B \to J/ψηK decays and search for a narrow resonance in the J/ψηfinal state

We report an observation of the $B^{\pm} \to J/ψηK^{\pm}$ and $B^0 \to J/ψηK^0_S$ decays using 772$\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We obtain the branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^{\pm}\rightarrow J/ψηK^{\pm})=(1.27\pm 0.11{\rm (stat.)\pm 0.11{\rm (syst.)})}\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^0\to J/ψηK^0_S)=(5.22 \pm 0.78 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.49{\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$. We search for a new narrow charmonium(-like) state $X$ in the $J/ψη$ mass spectrum and find no significant excess. We set upper limits on the product of branching fractions, ${\cal B}(B^\pm \to XK^\pm){\cal B}(X \to J/ψη)$, at 3872 MeV$/c^2$ where a $C$-odd partner of X(3872) may exist, at $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$ assuming their known mass and width, and over a range from 3.8 to 4.8 GeV$/c^2$. % at a 5 MeV$/c^2$ step. The obtained upper limits at 90% confidence level for $X^{C{\rm -odd}}(3872)$, $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$ are 3.8$\times 10^{-6}$, 15.5$\times 10^{-6}$ and 7.4$\times 10^{-6}$, respectively.

Measurement of the CP Violation Parameters in B0 -> pi+ pi- Decays

We present a measurement of the time-dependent charge-parity (CP) violation parameters in B0 -> pi+ pi- decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the CP violation parameters Acp = +0.33 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) and Scp = -0.64 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst), where Acp and Scp represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. Using an isospin analysis including results from other Belle measurements, we find 23.8 < phi2 < 66.8 degrees is disfavored at the 1 sigma level, where phi2 is one of the three interior angles of the CKM unitarity triangle related to B_{u,d} decays.
