Effect of random antiferromagnetic exchange on the spin waves in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet

Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO$_3$, with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced $via$ La-substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ as a model system to study the effect of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Data-Driven Key Performance Indicators and Datasets for Building Energy Flexibility: A Review and Perspectives

Energy flexibility, through short-term demand-side management (DSM) and energy storage technologies, is now seen as a major key to balancing the fluctuating supply in different energy grids with the energy demand of buildings. This is especially important when considering the intermittent nature of ever-growing renewable energy production, as well as the increasing dynamics of electricity demand in buildings. This paper provides a holistic review of (1) data-driven energy flexibility key performance indicators (KPIs) for buildings in the operational phase and (2) open datasets that can be used for testing energy flexibility KPIs. The review identifies a total of 81 data-driven KPIs from 91 recent publications. These KPIs were categorized and analyzed according to their type, complexity, scope, key stakeholders, data requirement, baseline requirement, resolution, and popularity. Moreover, 330 building datasets were collected and evaluated. Of those, 16 were deemed adequate to feature building performing demand response or building-to-grid (B2G) services. The DSM strategy, building scope, grid type, control strategy, needed data features, and usability of these selected 16 datasets were analyzed. This review reveals future opportunities to address limitations in the existing literature: (1) developing new data-driven methodologies to specifically evaluate different energy flexibility strategies and B2G services of existing buildings; (2) developing baseline-free KPIs that could be calculated from easily accessible building sensors and meter data; (3) devoting non-engineering efforts to promote building energy flexibility, such as designing utility programs, standardizing energy flexibility quantification and verification processes; and (4) curating datasets with proper description for energy flexibility assessments.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the quasi-2D antiferromagnet Zn-doped copper pyrovanadate

Magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn$_{0.15}$Cu$_{1.85}$V$_2$O$_7$ (ZnCVO) have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that ZnCVO with Zn = 0.15 is isostructural with $\beta$-Cu$_{2}$V$_2$O$_7$ ($\beta$-CVO) with small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic properties measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu$^{2+}$ spins were found to align along the crystallographic $c$-axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction $J_1$. Spin dynamics reveals a typical symmetric spin-wave dispersion with strong interactions in the $bc$-plane and weak interplane coupling. The exchange interaction analysis indicates that the spin network of ZnCVO is topologically consistent with the previous DFT prediction but the values of leading exchange interactions are contradictory. Furthermore, rather than the predicted 2D honeycomb structure, the spin network in ZnCVO could be better described by the anisotropic 2D spin network composing of $J_1$, $J_5$, and $J_6$ interactions, four bonds per one spin site, coupled by weak interplane interactions.

Growth and characterization of large (Y,La)TiO$_3$ and (Y,Ca)TiO$_3$ single crystals

The Mott-insulating rare-earth titanates (RTiO$_3$, R being a rare-earth ion) are an important class of materials that encompasses interesting spin-orbital phases as well as ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and insulator-metal transitions. The growth of these materials has been plagued by difficulties related to overoxidation, which arises from a strong tendency of Ti$^{3+}$ to oxidize to Ti$^{4+}$. We describe our efforts to grow sizable single crystals of YTiO$_3$ and its La-substituted and Ca-doped variants with the optical travelling-solvent floating-zone technique. We present sample characterization $via$ chemical composition analysis, magnetometry, charge transport, neutron scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to understand macroscopic physical property variations associated with overoxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a good signal-to-noise ratio in inelastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements of spin-wave excitations. A superconducting impurity phase, found to appear in Ca-doped samples at high doping levels, is identified as TiO.

Protocol Stack Perspective For Low Latency and Massive Connectivity in Future Cellular Networks

With the emergence of Internet-of-Things (IoT) and ever-increasing demand for the newly connected devices, there is a need for more effective storage and processing paradigms to cope with the data generated from these devices. In this study, we have discussed different paradigms for data processing and storage including Cloud, Fog, and Edge computing models and their suitability in integrating with the IoT. Moreover, a detailed discussion on low latency and massive connectivity requirements of future cellular networks in accordance with machine-type communication (MTC) is also presented. Furthermore, the need to bring IoT devices to Internet connectivity and a standardized protocol stack to regulate the data transmission between these devices is also addressed while keeping in view the resource constraint nature of IoT devices.

Nature of the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition in Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$

We explore the magnetically-ordered ground state of the isovalently-substituted Mott-insulator Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ for $x$ $\leq$ 0.3 via single crystal growth, magnetometry, neutron diffraction, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that the decrease in the magnetic transition temperature on approaching the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase boundary at the La concentration $x_c$ $\approx$ 0.3 is accompanied by a strong suppression of both bulk and local ordered magnetic moments, along with a volume-wise separation into magnetically-ordered and paramagnetic regions. The thermal phase transition does not show conventional second-order behavior, since neither a clear signature of dynamic critical behavior nor a power-law divergence of the magnetic correlation length is found for the studied substitution range; this finding becomes increasingly obvious with substitution. Finally, from SANS and magnetometry measurements, we discern a crossover from easy-axis to easy-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy with increasing La substitution. These results indicate complex changes in magnetic structure upon approaching the phase boundary.

Evolution of magnetic-field-induced ordering in the layered structure quantum Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

Quantum fluctuations in the effective spin one-half layered structure triangular-lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ lift the classical degeneracy of the antiferromagnetic ground state in magnetic field, producing a series of novel spin structures for magnetic fields applied within the crystallographic ab plane. Theoretically unresolved, however, are the effects of interlayer antferromagnetic coupling and transverse magnetic fields on the ground states of this system. To address these issues, we have used specific heat, neutron diffraction, thermal conductivity, and magnetic torque measurements to map out the phase diagram as a function of magnetic field intensity and orientation relative to the crystallographic ab plane. For H parallel to the ab plane, we have discovered an additional, previously unreported magnetic-field-induced phase transition at low temperature and an unexpected tetracritical point in the high field phase diagram, which - coupled with the apparent second-order nature of the phase transitions - eliminates several theoretically proposed spin structures for the high field phases. Our calorimetric measurements as a function of magnetic field orientation are in general agreement with theory for field-orientation angles close to plane parallel but diverge at angles near plane perpendicular; a predicted convergence of two phase boundaries at finite angle and a corresponding change in the order of the field induced phase transition is not observed experimentally. Our results emphasize the role of interlayer coupling in selecting and stabilizing field-induced phases, provide new guidance into the nature of the magnetic order in each phase, and reveal the need for new physics to account for the nature of magnetic ordering in this archetypal 2D spin one-half triangular lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Jiamusi pulsar observations: III. Nulling of 20 pulsars

Most of pulsar nulling observations were conducted at frequencies lower than 1400~MHz. We aim to understand the nulling behaviors of pulsars at relatively high frequency, and to check if nulling is caused by a global change of pulsar magnetosphere. 20 bright pulsars are observed at 2250~MHz with unprecedented lengths of time by using Jiamusi 66m telescope. Nulling fractions of these pulsars are estimated, and the null and emission states of pulses are identified. Nulling degrees and scales of the emission-null pairs are calculated to describe the distributions of emission and null lengths. Three pulsars, PSRs J0248+6021, J0543+2329 and J1844+00, are found to null for the first time. The details of null-to-emission and emission-to-null transitions within pulse window are first observed for PSR J1509+5531, which is a small probability event. A complete cycle of long nulls for hours is observed for PSR J1709-1640. For most of these pulsars, the K-S tests of nulling degrees and nulling scales reject the hypothesis that null and emission are of random processes at high significance levels. Emission-null sequences of some pulsars exhibit quasi-periodic, low-frequency or featureless modulations, which might be related to different origins. During transitions between emission and null states, pulse intensities have diverse tendencies for variations. Significant correlations are found for nulling fraction, nulling cadence and nulling scales with the energy loss rate of the pulsars. Combined with the nulling fractions reported in literatures for 146 nulling pulsars, we found that statistically large nulling fractions are more tightly related to pulsar period than to characteristic age or energy loss rate.

Coexistence and interaction of spinons and magnons in an antiferromagnet with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic quantum spin chains

In conventional quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets with quantum spins, magnetic excitations are carried by either magnons or spinons in different energy regimes: they do not coexist independently, nor could they interact with each other. In this Letter, by combining inelastic neutron scattering, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Random Phase Approximation calculations, we report the discovery and discuss the physics of the coexistence of magnons and spinons and their interactions in Botallackite-Cu2(OH)3Br. This is a unique quantum antiferromagnet consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 chains with weak inter-chain couplings. Our study presents a new paradigm where one can study the interaction between two different types of magnetic quasiparticles, magnons and spinons.

Magnetic Properties of the low dimensional BaM$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$(M= Cu, Co, Mn) system

We performed susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on single crystalline BaMn$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Based on the results, we revisited its spin structure with a more accurate solution and constructed a magnetic phase diagram with applied field along the $b$-axis, which contains a spin flop transition around 6 T. We also used susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat results confirmed the ferrimagnetic-like magnetism in polycrystalline BaCo$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Furthermore, we performed LSDA + U calculations for the BaM$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$ (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system. Our discussions based on the comparison among the obtained magnetic exchange interactions suggest the different structures and electronic configurations are the reasons for the different magnetic properties among the system members.

Colossal magnetoresistance in a Mott insulator via magnetic field-driven insulator-metal transition

We present a new type of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) arising from an anomalous collapse of the Mott insulating state via a modest magnetic field in a bilayer ruthenate, Ti-doped Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. Such an insulator-metal transition is accompanied by changes in both lattice and magnetic structures. Our findings have important implications because a magnetic field usually stabilizes the insulating ground state in a Mott-Hubbard system, thus calling for a deeper theoretical study to reexamine the magnetic field tuning of Mott systems with magnetic and electronic instabilities and spin-lattice-charge coupling. This study further provides a model approach to search for CMR systems other than manganites, such as Mott insulators in the vicinity of the boundary between competing phases.

Evolution of the magnetic and structural properties of Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$

The magnetic and structural properties of single crystal Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_{4}$ samples have been investigated by performing specific heat, susceptibility, neutron diffraction, and X-ray diffraction measurements. As the orbital-active Fe$^{2+}$ ions with larger ionic size are gradually substituted by the orbital-inactive Co$^{2+}$ ions with smaller ionic size, the system approaches the itinerant electron limit with decreasing V-V distance. Then, various factors such as the Jahn-Teller distortion and the spin-orbital coupling of the Fe$^{2+}$ ions on the A sites and the orbital ordering and electronic itinerancy of the V$^{3+}$ ions on the B sites compete with each other to produce a complex magnetic and structural phase diagram. This phase diagram is compared to those of Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$V$_2$O$_{4}$ and Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_{4}$ to emphasize several distinct features.

Magnetic ground states and magnetodielectric effect in $R$Cr(BO$_3$)$_2$ ($R$ = Y and Ho)

The layered perovskites $R$Cr(BO$_3$)$_2$ ($R$ = Y and Ho) with magnetic triangular lattices were studied by performing ac/dc susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and dielectric constant measurements. The results show (i) both samples' Cr$^{3+}$ spins order in a canted antiferromagnetic structure with $T_N$ around 8-9 K, while the Ho$^{3+}$ ions do not order down to $T$ = 1.5 K in HoCr(BO$_3$)$_2$; (ii) when a critical magnetic field H$_{C}$ around 2-3 T is applied below $T_{N}$, the Cr$^{3+}$ spins in the Y-compound and both the Cr$^{3+}$ and Ho$^{3+}$ spins in the Ho-compound order in a ferromagnetic state; (iii) both samples exhibit dielectric constant anomalies around the transition temperature and critical field, but the Ho-compound displays a much stronger magnetodielectric response. We speculate that this is due to the magnetostriction which depends on both of the Cr$^{3+}$ and the Ho$^{3+}$ ions' ordering in the Ho-compound. Moreover, by using linear spin wave theory to simulate the inelastic neutron scattering data, we estimated the Y-compound's intralayer and interlayer exchange strengths as ferromagnetic J$_{1}$ = -0.12 meV and antiferromagnetic J$_{2}$ = 0.014 meV, respectively. The competition between different kinds of superexchange interactions results in the ferromagnetic intralayer interaction.

Spin dynamics near a putative antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Cu substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and its relation to high-temperature superconductivity

We present the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on non-superconducting Ba(Fe${_{0.957}}$Cu${_{0.043}}$)${_2}$As${_2}$, a composition close to a quantum critical point between AFM ordered and paramagnetic phases. By comparing these results with the spin fluctuations in the low Cu composition as well as the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds, we demonstrate that paramagnon-like spin fluctuations are evident in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of Ba(Fe$_{0.957}$Cu$_{0.043}$)$_2$As$_2$, which is distinct from the AFM-like spin fluctuations in the superconducting compounds. Our observations suggest that Cu substitution decouples the interaction between quasiparticles and the spin fluctuations. We also show that the spin-spin correlation length, ${\xi(T)}$, increases rapidly as the temperature is lowered and find ${\omega/T}$ scaling behavior, the hallmark of quantum criticality, at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in CeCu$_{6-x}T_x$ ($T$ = Ag, Pd)

The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffraction measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $\approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $\approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $\approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($\delta_1$ 0 $\delta_2$) where $\delta_1 \sim 0.62$, $\delta_2 \sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $\delta_1 \sim 0.64$, $\delta_2 \sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell.

Magnons and a two-component spin gap in FeV2O4

The spinel vanadates have become a model family for exploring orbital order on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice, and recent debate has focused on the symmetry of local crystal fields at the cation sites. Here, we present neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum in $\mathrm{FeV_2O_4}$, a recent example of a ferrimagnetic spinel vanadate which is available in single crystal form. We report the existence of two emergent magnon modes at low temperatures, which draw strong parallels with the closely related material, $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$. We were able to reproduce the essential elements of both the magnetic ordering pattern and the dispersion of the inelastic modes with semi- classical spin wave calculations, using a minimal model that implies a sizeable single-ion anisotropy on the vanadium sublattice. Taking into account the direction of ordered spins, we associate this anisotropy with the large trigonal distortion of $\mathrm{VO_6}$ octahedra, previously observed via neutron powder diffraction measurements. We further report on the spin gap, which is an order-of-magnitude larger than that observed in $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$. By looking at the overall temperature dependence, we were able to show that the gap magnitude is largely associated with the ferro-orbital order known to exist on the iron sublattice, but the contribution to the gap from the vanadium sublattice is in fact comparable to what is reported in the Mn compound. This reinforces the conclusion that the spin canting transition is associated with the ordering of vanadium orbitals in this system, and closer analysis indicates closely related physics underlying orbital transitions in $\mathrm{FeV_2O_4}$ and $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$.

Magnetic Phase Transition in the Low Dimensional Compound BaMn2Si2O7

The structural and magnetic properties of BaMn2Si2O7 have been investigated. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, measured using single crystals, suggest that the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism originating from the loosely coupled Mn2+ chain carrying S=5/2 is present at high temperatures, which is similar to the other quasi-one-dimensional barium silicates, BaM2Si2O7 (M: Cu and Co). The Neel temperature (TN=26 K) is high compared to the magnetic interaction along the chain (J = -6 K). The neutron powder diffraction study has revealed that the magnetic structure is long-ranged with antiferromagnetic arrangement along the chain (c) direction and ferromagnetic arrangement along the a and b axes. The detailed structural analysis suggests that the interchain interaction via Mn-O-Mn bond along the a axis is relatively large, which makes the system behave more two-dimensionally in the ac plane and enhances TN.

The 2MASS Tully-Fisher Survey : Mapping the Mass in the Universe

The 2MASS Tully-Fisher Survey (2MTF) aims to measure Tully-Fisher (TF) distances for all bright inclined spirals in the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) using high quality HI widths and 2MASS photometry. Compared with previous peculiar velocity surveys, the 2MTF survey provides more accurate width measurements and more uniform sky coverage, combining observations with the Green Bank, Arecibo and Parkes telescopes. With this new redshift-independent distance database, we will significantly improve our understanding of the mass distribution in the local universe.
