Simulating Simplified Versions of the IKKT Matrix Model

We simulate a supersymmetric matrix model obtained from dimensional reduction of 4d SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory (a 4d counter part of the IKKT model or IIB matrix model). The eigenvalue distribution determines the space structure. The measurement of Wilson loop correlators reveals a universal large N scaling. Eguchi-Kawai equivalence may hold in a finite range of scale, which is also true for the bosonic case. We finally report on simulations of a low energy approximation of the 10d IKKT model, where we omit the phase of the Pfaffian and look for evidence for a spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking.

Monte Carlo Studies of the IIB Matrix Model at Large N

The low-energy effective theory of the IIB matrix model developed by H. Aoki et al. is written down explicitly in terms of bosonic variables only. The effective theory is then studied by Monte Carlo simulations in order to investigate the possibility of a spontaneous breakdown of Lorentz invariance. The imaginary part of the effective action, which causes the so-called sign problem in the simulation, is dropped by hand. The extent of the eigenvalue distribution of the bosonic matrices shows a power-law large N behavior, consistent with a simple branched-polymer prediction. We observe, however, that the eigenvalue distribution becomes more and more isotropic in the ten-dimensional space-time as we increase N. This suggests that if the spontaneous breakdown of Lorentz invariance really occurs in the IIB matrix model, a crucial role must be played by the imaginary part of the effective action.

Large N Dynamics of Dimensionally Reduced 4D SU(N) Super Yang-Mills Theory

We perform Monte Carlo simulations of a supersymmetric matrix model, which is obtained by dimensional reduction of 4D SU(N) super Yang-Mills theory. The model can be considered as a four-dimensional counterpart of the IIB matrix model. We extract the space-time structure represented by the eigenvalues of bosonic matrices. In particular we compare the large N behavior of the space-time extent with the result obtained from a low energy effective theory. We measure various Wilson loop correlators which represent string amplitudes and we observe a nontrivial universal scaling in N. We also observe that the Eguchi-Kawai equivalence to ordinary gauge theory does hold at least within a finite range of scale. Comparison with the results for the bosonic case clarifies the role of supersymmetry in the large N dynamics. It does affect the multi-point correlators qualitatively, but the Eguchi-Kawai equivalence is observed even in the bosonic case.

Studies of 100 um-thick silicon strip detector with analog VLSI readout

We evaluate the performances of a 100 um-thick silicon strip detector (SSD) with a 300 MeV proton beam and a 90Sr beta-ray source. Signals from the SSD have been read out using a VLSI chip. Common-mode noise, signal separation efficiency and energy resolution are compared with those for the SSD's with a thickness of 300 um and 500 um. Energy resolution for minimum ionizing particles (MIP's) is improved by fitting the non-constant component in a common-mode noise with a linear function.

Measurement of the 6Li(e,e'p) reaction cross sections at low momentum transfer

The triple differential cross sections for the 6Li(e,e'p) reaction have been measured in the excitation energy region from 27 to 46 MeV in a search for evidence of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in 6Li. The cross sections have no distinct structures in this energy region, and decrease smoothly with the energy transfer. Angular distributions are different from those expected with the GDR. Protons are emitted strongly in the momentum-transfer direction. The data are well reproduced by a DWIA calculation assuming a direct proton knockout process.

Dynamical Properties of Large N Reduced Model of Yang-Mills Theory

We study the large N reduced model of D-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with special attention to the dynamical aspects related to the eigenvalues of the NxN matrices, which correspond to the space-time coordinates in the IIB matrix model. We define a quantity which represents the uncertainty of the space-time coordinates and show that it is of the same order as the extent of the space time, which means that the classical space-time picture is maximally broken. The absence of the SSB of the Lorentz invariance is also shown.

Bloch electrons in a Jahn-Teller crystal and an orbital-density-wave state due to the Berry phase

The effect of the Berry phase is included explicitly in the wavefunction describing conduction electrons in a crystal composed of periodically arrayed Jahn-Teller centers that have conically intersecting potential energy surfaces. The Berry phase can make a drastic change in the band structure, leading generally to the formation of an orbital-density-wave state. We discuss implications of our theory and possible relations to the orbital ordering observed in the manganese perovskites.

Single massless Majorana fermion in the domain-wall formalism

We study the domain-wall formalism with additional Majorana mass term for the unwanted zero mode, which has recently been proposed for lattice construction of 4D N=1 super Yang-Mills theory without fine-tuning. Switching off the gauge field, we study the dispersion relation of the energy eigenstates numerically, and find that the method works for reasonable values of Majorana mass. We point out, however, that a problem arises for too large Majorana mass, which can be understood in terms of the seesaw mechanism.

A new phase structure in three-dimensional dynamical triangulation model

We investigate a new phase structure of the three-dimensional dynamical triangulation model with an additional local term by Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the first order phase transition observed for the naive Einstein-Hilbert action terminates at a finite coefficient of the new term. The phase transition turns into second order at the endpoint, beyond which it becomes a crossover.

Singular Vertices in the Strong Coupling Phase of Four-Dimensional Simplicial Gravity

We study four-dimensional simplicial gravity through numerical simulation with special attention to the existence of singular vertices, in the strong coupling phase, that are shared by abnormally large numbers of four-simplices. We attempt to cure this disease by adding a term to the action which suppresses such singular vertices. For a sufficiently large coefficient of the additional term, however, the phase transition disappears and the system is observed to be always in the branched polymer phase for any gravitational constant.

Scaling Behavior in 4D Simplicial Quantum Gravity

Scaling relations in four-dimensional simplicial quantum gravity are proposed using the concept of the geodesic distance. Based on the analogy of a loop length distribution in the two-dimensional case, the scaling relations of the boundary volume distribution in four dimensions are discussed in three regions: the strong-coupling phase, the critical point and the weak-coupling phase. In each phase a different scaling behavior is found.

Scaling Structures in Four-dimensional Simplicial Gravity

Four-dimensional(4D) spacetime structures are investigated using the concept of the geodesic distance in the simplicial quantum gravity. On the analogy of the loop length distribution in 2D case, the scaling relations of the boundary volume distribution in 4D are discussed in various coupling regions i.e. strong-coupling phase, critical point and weak-coupling phase. In each phase the different scaling relations are found.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking without Messenger Gauge Interactions

We investigate low-energy models of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking by means of vector-like gauge theories for dynamical SUSY breaking. It is not necessary to introduce messenger gauge interactions utilized so far to mediate the SUSY breaking to the standard-model sector, which reduces complication in the model building. We also consider various other ways of SUSY-breaking transmission.

Nonabelian Duality and Higgs Multiplets in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

We consider strongly interacting supersymmetric gauge theories which break dynamically the GUT symmetry and produce the light Higgs doublets naturally. Two models we proposed in the previous articles are reanalyzed as two phases of one theory and are shown to have desired features. Furthermore, employing nonabelian duality proposed recently by Seiberg, we study the dual theory of the above one and show that the low-energy physics of the original and dual models are the same as expected. We note that the Higgs multiplets in the original model are regarded as composite states of the elementary hyperquarks in its dual theory. Theories with other hypercolors and similar matter contents are also analyzed in the same way.

Quantum Restoration of the U(1)_Y Symmetry in Dynamically Broken SUSY-GUT's

We propose a supersymmetric hypercolor SU(3)_H gauge theory interacting strongly at the grand unification scale, in which the hyperquark condensation breaks SU(5)_GUT down to SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L without unbroken U(1)_Y at the classical level. However, we show that the broken U(1)_Y symmetry is restored by quantum mechanical effects and hence there remains the standard-model gauge symmetry at the electroweak scale. The dynamics of the strong interactions also produces naturally a pair of massless Higgs doublets. In addition to these Higgs doublets, we have a pair of massless singlets which contributes to the renormalization-group equations of gauge coupling constants and hence affects the GUT unification. We discuss a simple solution to this problem.

Singular Vertices in the Strong Coupling Phase of Four--Dimensional Simplicial Gravity

We study four--dimensional simplicial gravity through numerical simulation with special attention to the existence of singular vertices, in the strong coupling phase, that are shared by abnormally large numbers of four--simplices. The second order phase transition from the strong coupling phase into the weak coupling phase could be understood as the disappearance of the singular vertices. We also change the topology of the universe from the sphere to the torus.
