Precision measurement of reactor antineutrino oscillation at kilometer-scale baselines by Daya Bay

We present a new determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the mass-squared difference $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32}$ using a final sample of $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ inverse beta-decay (IBD) candidates with the final-state neutron captured on gadolinium. This sample was selected from the complete data set obtained by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in 3158 days of operation. Compared to the previous Daya Bay results, selection of IBD candidates has been optimized, energy calibration refined, and treatment of backgrounds further improved. The resulting oscillation parameters are ${\rm sin}^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.0851 \pm 0.0024$, $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32} = (2.466 \pm 0.060) \times 10^{-3}{\rm eV}^{2}$ for the normal mass ordering or $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32} = -(2.571 \pm 0.060) \times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^{2}$ for the inverted mass ordering.

First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-$Q_β$ isotopes in commercial reactors.

Exploring the intrinsic energy resolution of liquid scintillator to approximately 1 MeV electrons

We proposed a novel method for exploring the intrinsic energy resolution of a liquid scintillator (LAB + 2.5 g/L PPO + 3 mg/L bis-MSB) for approximately 1 MeV electrons. With the help of coincidence detection technology, single-energy electrons of Bi 207 were effectively selected. With careful measurement and analysis of the energy resolution of a small liquid scintillator detector, the intrinsic energy resolution to 976 keV electrons was extracted to be 1.83%. We used the wide-angle Compton coincidence (WACC) method to measure the luminescent nonlinearity of the liquid scintillator and found that it contributes only weakly to the intrinsic energy resolution of electrons. Such an unexpected large intrinsic energy resolution may come from fluctuations in energy transfer processes.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of $^{235}$U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the $^{235}$U spectral shape to about 3\%. The ${}^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Antineutrino Energy Spectrum Unfolding Based on the Daya Bay Measurement and Its Applications

The prediction of reactor antineutrino spectra will play a crucial role as reactor experiments enter the precision era. The positron energy spectrum of 3.5 million antineutrino inverse beta decay reactions observed by the Daya Bay experiment, in combination with the fission rates of fissile isotopes in the reactor, is used to extract the positron energy spectra resulting from the fission of specific isotopes. This information can be used to produce a precise, data-based prediction of the antineutrino energy spectrum in other reactor antineutrino experiments with different fission fractions than Daya Bay. The positron energy spectra are unfolded to obtain the antineutrino energy spectra by removing the contribution from detector response with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. Consistent results are obtained with other unfolding methods. A technique to construct a data-based prediction of the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum is proposed and investigated. Given the reactor fission fractions, the technique can predict the energy spectrum to a 2% precision. In addition, we illustrate how to perform a rigorous comparison between the unfolded antineutrino spectrum and a theoretical model prediction that avoids the input model bias of the unfolding method.

Photoproduction of $η$ mesons off the proton for $1.2 < E_γ< 4.7$ GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction $γp\to pη$ using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The $η$ mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, $η\to π^+π^-π^0$, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new $η$ photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of $η$ MAID\,2018 and the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis. Differential cross sections $dσ/dt$ are presented for incident photon energies $E_γ> 2.9$ GeV ($W > 2.5$ GeV), and compared with predictions which are based on Regge trajectories exchange in the $t$-channel (Regge models). The data confirm the expected dominance of $ρ$, $ω$ vector-meson exchange in an analysis by the Joint Physics Analysis Center.

Search For Electron-Antineutrinos Associated With Gravitational-Wave Events GW150914, GW151012, GW151226, GW170104, GW170608, GW170814, and GW170817 at Daya Bay

Providing a possible connection between neutrino emission and gravitational-wave (GW) bursts is important to our understanding of the physical processes that occur when black holes or neutron stars merge. In the Daya Bay experiment, using data collected from December 2011 to August 2017, a search has been performed for electron-antineutrino signals coinciding with detected GW events, including GW150914, GW151012, GW151226, GW170104, GW170608, GW170814, and GW170817. We used three time windows of $\mathrm{\pm 10~s}$, $\mathrm{\pm 500~s}$, and $\mathrm{\pm 1000~s}$ relative to the occurrence of the GW events, and a neutrino energy range of 1.8 to 100 MeV to search for correlated neutrino candidates. The detected electron-antineutrino candidates are consistent with the expected background rates for all the three time windows. Assuming monochromatic spectra, we found upper limits (90% confidence level) on electron-antineutrino fluence of $(1.13~-~2.44) \times 10^{11}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ at 5 MeV to $8.0 \times 10^{7}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ at 100 MeV for the three time windows. Under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum, the upper limits were found to be $(5.4~-~7.0)\times 10^{9}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ for the three time windows.

Flyback-Based Multiple Output dc-dc Converter with Independent Voltage Regulation

This paper proposes a new single input multiple output power supply by integrating a flyback converter and several buck converters. The flyback converter works as the main regulator, and the buck converters provide series voltage compensation with the aim of tight regulation. A time multiplexing switching scheme is proposed to deliver multiple output voltage levels via a two winding transformer and to eliminate the cross regulation between output channels. This configuration reduces the size of flyback transformer and filter capacitors, and consequently improves the overall form factor. A detailed steady state analysis is conducted on the circuit to obtain the design criteria. A three output channel power supply is designed and the effectiveness of the proposed configuration is validated via simulation with a MATLAB/Simscape model. Simulation results also demonstrate satisfactory transient response to load changes.

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the $θ_{μe}$ mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CL$_s$ for $Δm^2_{41}<5\,$eV$^2$.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CL$_s$ for $Δm^2_{41}$ $<$ 1.2 eV$^2$.

Multiple string LED driver with flexible and high performance PWM dimming control

The main objectives in driving multiple LED strings include achieving uniform current control and high performance PWM dimming for all strings. This work proposes a new multiple string LED driver to achieve not only current balance, but also flexible and wide range PWM dimming ratio for each string. A compact single-inductor multiple-output topology is adopted in the driver, accompanied by synchronous integrators and variable dimming frequency, to achieve both high efficiency and high performance dimming. By using the proposed variable dimming frequency scheme, high dimming frequency is applied to a string with high dimming ratio, which helps to maintain the deviation of LED string current in an acceptable range, while low dimming frequency is applied to a string with low dimming ratio, which helps to achieve rectangular LED current waveform. Meanwhile, the new time multiplexing control scheme automatically optimizes the LED string's bus voltages, thus minimizes each string's power loss. A three string LED driver prototype is constructed to validate the effectiveness of the peoposed control scheme, where the three strings can have different dimming ratios between 4% and 100%.

Extraction of the $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Antineutrino Spectra at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first extraction of individual antineutrino spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu fission and an improved measurement of the prompt energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay. The analysis uses $3.5\times 10^6$ inverse beta-decay candidates in four near antineutrino detectors in 1958 days. The individual antineutrino spectra of the two dominant isotopes, $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu, are extracted using the evolution of the prompt spectrum as a function of the isotope fission fractions. In the energy window of 4--6~MeV, a 7\% (9\%) excess of events is observed for the $^{235}$U ($^{239}$Pu) spectrum compared with the normalized Huber-Mueller model prediction. The significance of discrepancy is $4.0σ$ for $^{235}$U spectral shape compared with the Huber-Mueller model prediction. The shape of the measured inverse beta-decay prompt energy spectrum disagrees with the prediction of the Huber-Mueller model at $5.3σ$. In the energy range of 4--6~MeV, a maximal local discrepancy of $6.3σ$ is observed.

A high precision calibration of the nonlinear energy response at Daya Bay

A high precision calibration of the nonlinearity in the energy response of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment's antineutrino detectors is presented in detail. The energy nonlinearity originates from the particle-dependent light yield of the scintillator and charge-dependent electronics response. The nonlinearity model is constrained by $γ$ calibration points from deployed and naturally occurring radioactive sources, the $β$ spectrum from $^{12}$B decays, and a direct measurement of the electronics nonlinearity with a new flash analog-to-digital converter readout system. Less than 0.5% uncertainty in the energy nonlinearity calibration is achieved for positrons of kinetic energies greater than 1 MeV.

Controllable crystal restructuring in MXene by electron irradiation

Recent decades have witnessed the breakthroughs in utilizing electron beams as the smallest tools to tailor materials. Whereas, the manipulation of atoms in a controllable manner by the electron beams is a long-time challenge due to the random nature of atom-knock-on. Here, we show that electron irradiation can controllably manipulate atoms in newly-developed MXene multilayers. The multilayers consist of many few-atom-thick transition metal carbide slabs that are terminated with hydroxyl and O functional groups on each slab. Upon electron irradiation, the H atoms of the hydroxyl are knocked off, creating cation traps surrounded by dangling O confined in a nano-sized slit. Simultaneously, the transition metal atoms partially struck away from the carbide slabs migrate into the cation traps periodically, resulting in crystal restructuring. Crystal restructuring is versatile for various MXenes and dramatically improves the electric conductivity and lessens the anisotropy, holding significant implications in engineering MXenes at the atomic scale.

Evidence of a resonant structure in the $e^+e^-\to π^+D^0D^{*-}$ cross section between 4.05 and 4.60 GeV

The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to π^+D^0D^{*-}$ for center-of-mass energies from 4.05 to 4.60~GeV is measured precisely using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and 4.40~GeV. Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of $4228.6 \pm 4.1 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}/c^2$ and a width of $77.0 \pm 6.8 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the $Y(4220)$ state and the theoretical prediction of a $D\bar{D}_1(2420)$ molecule. This result is the first observation of $Y(4220)$ associated with an open-charm final state. Fits with three resonance functions with additional $Y(4260)$, $Y(4320)$, $Y(4360)$, $ψ(4415)$, or a new resonance, do not show significant contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from $ψ(4415)$ and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better understand this enhancement.

Study of electromagnetic Dalitz decays $χ_{cJ} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ$

Using $4.48 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we search for the decays $χ_{cJ} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ$ through the radiative decays $ψ(3686) \rightarrow γχ_{cJ}$, where $J=0,1,2$. The decays $χ_{c1,2} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ$ are observed, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c1} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ) = (2.51 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.20)\times10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c2} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ) = (2.33 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.29)\times10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one systematic. No significant $χ_{c0} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ$ decay is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be $2.0\times10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level. Also, we present a study of di-muon invariant mass dependent transition form factor for the decays $χ_{c1,2} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}J/ψ$.

Search for a strangeonium-like structure $Z_s$ decaying into $ϕπ$ and a measurement of the cross section $e^+e^-\rightarrowϕππ$

Using a data sample of $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 108 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 2.125 GeV, we study the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕππ$ and search for a strangeoniumlike structure $Z_s$ decaying into $ϕπ$. No signal is observed in the $ϕπ$ mass spectrum. Upper limits on the cross sections for $Z_s$ production at the 90\% confidence level are determined. In addition, the cross sections of $e^+e^-\rightarrowϕπ^{+}π^{-}$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrowϕπ^{0}π^{0}$ at 2.125 GeV are measured to be $(436.2\pm6.4\pm30.1)$ pb and $(237.0\pm8.6\pm15.4)$ pb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation with 1958 days of operation at Daya Bay

We report a measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment with nearly 4 million reactor $\overlineν_{e}$ inverse beta decay candidates observed over 1958 days of data collection. The installation of a Flash-ADC readout system and a special calibration campaign using different source enclosures reduce uncertainties in the absolute energy calibration to less than 0.5% for visible energies larger than 2 MeV. The uncertainty in the cosmogenic $^9$Li and $^8$He background is reduced from 45% to 30% in the near detectors. A detailed investigation of the spent nuclear fuel history improves its uncertainty from 100% to 30%. Analysis of the relative $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra among detectors yields $\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.0856\pm 0.0029$ and $Δm^2_{32}=(2.471^{+0.068}_{-0.070})\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ assuming the normal hierarchy, and $Δm^2_{32}=-(2.575^{+0.068}_{-0.070})\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ assuming the inverted hierarchy.
