A diagnostic system of 5.7 keV muon beam for muon accelerator

Realization of a low-emittance muon beam through the acceleration of keV-scale muons requires the injection of a suitably matched beam into an accelerator, since beam mismatch can lead to emittance growth and reduced acceleration efficiency. In one such scheme, muons are first thermalized to room temperature and then injected into a linear accelerator. Non-destructive diagnostics are challenging because of the low energy and low intensity. We developed a compact low-energy muon diagnostic system compatible with the accelerator under construction at J-PARC. The system is designed to evaluate beam conditions required for precise tuning prior to acceleration. Commissioning with low-energy muon sources shows the system's capability to identify low-energy muon signals and measure beam profiles.

AT 2025abao: The fourth luminous red nova in M 31

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT 2025abao, the fourth discovered in M 31. The LRN, associated to the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star WNTR23bzdiq, was discovered during the fast rise following the minimum phase. It reached its peak at $g=15.1$ mag ($M_g=-9.5\pm0.1$ mag), and then it settled onto a long-duration plateau in the red bands, lasting 70 days, while it was slowly linearly declining in the blue bands. At the peak the object showed similarities with the canonical LRNe V838 Monocerotis, V1309 Scorpii, and the faint and fast-evolving AT 2019zhd, which is the third LRN in M31, though the later evolution is different. Spectroscopically, AT 2025abao evolved as a canonical LRN: the early spectra present a blue continuum with narrow Balmer lines in emission; at the peak, the spectral continuum has cooled to a yellow colour, with a photospheric temperature of 6000 K. Balmer lines had weakened, while absorption lines from metals (Fe I, Fe II, Sc II, Ba II, Ti II) had developed, and they were particularly broad from the UV Ca II H&K lines. Medium- and high-resolution spectra reveal narrow ($\sim$50 km/s) absorption and broad ($\sim$450 km/s) emission profiles in the Balmer lines, from a slower wind and a faster outflow, respectively. Finally, late-time spectra show an orange continuum ($T\sim4000-5000$ K), a return in strength of the Balmer lines and the formation of molecular absorption bands. AT 2025abao is the rare case of an LRN with detailed archival information regarding the progenitor system. For the first time, we obtained the spectral energy distribution in the infrared of the precursor of an LRN, which is consistent with that of an M~giant/AGB. We propose that the dichotomy of light-curve behaviour in LRNe (two peaks vs. plateau) can be explained by the extent and H-richness of the common envelope.

Aerogel RICH Counter at the Belle II Detector

We report on the design, operation, and performance of a novel proximity-focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector equipped with a multilayer focusing aerogel radiator, developed for the forward region of the Belle II spectrometer at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The system achieves effective separation of charged pions, kaons, and protons across the full kinematic range of the experiment, from 0.5 GeV/c to 4 GeV/c. To date, the detector has successfully operated in data-taking, contributing to the collection and analysis of nearly 600/fb of Belle II $e^+e^-$ collision data.

Optical and Near-infrared Observations of SN 2023ixf for over 600 days after the Explosion

Context. We present a comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic study of the nearby Type II supernova (SN) 2023ixf, with our extensive observations spanning the phases from ~3 to over 600 days after the first light.\\ Aims. The aim of this study is to obtain key information on the explosion properties of SN\,2023ixf and the nature of its progenitor.\\ Methods. The observational properties of SN\,2023ixf are compared with those of a sample of Type IIP/L SNe to investigate commonalities and diversities. We conduct a detailed analysis of temporal evolution of major spectral features observed throughout different phases of the SN\,2023ixf explosion. Several interpretations are addressed through a comparison between the data and the model spectra for progenitor stars within a range of zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) masses.\\ Results. Our observations indicate that SN\,2023ixf is a transitional SN that bridges the gap between Type IIP and IIL subclasses of H-rich SNe, characterized by a relatively short plateau ($\lesssim 70$\,d) in the light curve. It shows a rather prompt spectroscopic evolution toward the nebular phase; emission lines of Na, O, H, and Ca in nebular spectra all exhibit multipeak profiles, which might be attributed to bipolar distribution of the ejecta. In particular, the H$\alpha$ profile can be separated into two central peaked components (with a velocity of about 1500\,km\,s$^{-1}$) that is likely due to nickel-powered ejecta and two outer peak/box components (with a velocity extending up to ~8000 km\,s$^{-1}$) that can arise from interaction of the outermost ejecta with a circumstellar shell at a distance of $\sim6.2\times10^{15}$cm. The nebular-phase spectra of SN\,2023ixf show good agreement with those predicted by model spectra for progenitor stars with a ZAMS mass ranging from 15 to 19\,M${_\odot}$. A distance $D = 6.35^{+0.31}_{-0.39}$\,Mpc is estimated for M101.

Development of a picosecond-timing Cherenkov detector using gaseous photomultiplification

Photosensitive gaseous detectors with a simple photoelectron multiplication mechanism as resistive plate chambers are expected to offer both large photo coverage and excellent time resolution while keeping costs low. We have developed a gaseous photomultiplier (GasPM) and demonstrated that a single-photon time resolution is $25\pm1.1~\rm{ps}$ at the gain of $3.3\times10^6$ with a $\rm {LaB_6}$ photocathode, which has an extremely low quantum efficiency. We then developed a Cherenkov detector using GasPM with a $\rm{CsI}$ photocathode aiming for an application in time-of-flight measurements with a resolution below 10~$\rm{ps}$ for particle identification. We performed a test using the 3 GeV electron beam at the PF-AR test beamline located at KEK, Japan. As a result, the resolution of time-of-flight between the detector and an MCP-PMT is measured to be $\sigma=73.0\pm2.4~\rm{ps}$. The obtained resolution is worse than the target because of the lower gap voltage compared to the design. However, it is consistent with the expectation from the applied gap voltage. It is an important milestone for achieving the designed resolution by increasing the gap voltage and photon detection efficiency in future development.

Acceleration of positive muons by a radio-frequency cavity

Acceleration of positive muons from thermal energy to $100~$keV has been demonstrated. Thermal muons were generated by resonant multi-photon ionization of muonium atoms emitted from a sheet of laser-ablated aerogel. The thermal muons were first electrostatically accelerated to $5.7~$keV, followed by further acceleration to 100 keV using a radio-frequency quadrupole. The transverse normalized emittance of the accelerated muons in the horizontal and vertical planes were $0.85 \pm 0.25 ~\rm{(stat.)}~^{+0.22}_{-0.13} ~\rm{(syst.)}~\pi~$mm$\cdot$mrad and $0.32\pm 0.03~\rm{(stat.)} ^{+0.05}_{-0.02} ~\rm{(syst.)}~\pi~$mm$\cdot$mrad, respectively. The measured emittance values demonstrated phase space reduction by a factor of $2.0\times 10^2$ (horizontal) and $4.1\times 10^2$ (vertical) allowing good acceleration efficiency. These results pave the way to realize the first-ever muon accelerator for a variety of applications in particle physics, material science, and other fields.

The Belle II Detector Upgrades Framework Conceptual Design Report

We describe the planned near-term and potential longer-term upgrades of the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider operating at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan. These upgrades will allow increasingly sensitive searches for possible new physics beyond the Standard Model in flavor, tau, electroweak and dark sector physics that are both complementary to and competitive with the LHC and other experiments.

Angular analysis of $B \to K^* e^+ e^-$ in the low-$q^2$ region with new electron identification at Belle

We perform an angular analysis of the $B\to K^* e^+ e^-$ decay for the dielectron mass squared, $q^2$, range of $0.0008$ to $1.1200 ~\text{GeV}^2 /c^4$ using the full Belle data set in the $K^{*0} \to K^+ \pi^-$ and $K^{*+} \to K_S^0 \pi^+$ channels, incorporating new methods of electron identification to improve the statistical power of the data set. This analysis is sensitive to contributions from right-handed currents from physics beyond the Standard Model by constraining the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_7^{(\prime)}$. We perform a fit to the $B\to K^* e^+ e^-$ differential decay rate and measure the imaginary component of the transversality amplitude to be $A_T^{\rm Im} = -1.27 \pm 0.52 \pm 0.12$, and the $K^*$ transverse asymmetry to be $A_T^{(2)} = 0.52 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.11$, with $F_L$ and $A_T^{\rm Re}$ fixed to the Standard Model values. The resulting constraints on the value of $\mathcal{C}_7^{\prime}$ are consistent with the Standard Model within a $2\sigma$ confidence interval.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in $\Upsilon(2S) \to \ell^\mp\tau^\pm$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) decays at Belle

We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in $\Upsilon(2S) \to \ell^\mp\tau^\pm$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) decays using a $25~\fbi$ $\Upsilon(2S)$ sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We find no evidence for a signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) at 90\% confidence level. We obtain the most stringent upper limits: $\mathcal{B}(\Ytomutau) < 0.23 \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\Ytoetau) < 1.12 \times 10^{-6}$.

Observation of charmed strange meson pair production in $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays and in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52~ \rm{GeV}$

We observe the process $\Upsilon(2S)\to D_s^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^{-}$ and continuum production $e^+e^- \to D_s^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^- $ at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$ GeV (and their charge conjugates) using the data samples collected by the Belle detector at KEKB, where $D_{sJ}^-$ is $D_{s1}(2536)^-$ or $D^{*}_{s2}(2573)^-$. Both $D_{sJ}^-$ states are identified through their decay into $\bar{K}\bar{D}^{(*)}$. We measure the products of branching fractions ${\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S) \to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-) {\cal B}(D_{sJ}^-\to \bar{K} \bar{D}^{(*)})$ and the Born cross sections $\sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^- \to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-) {\cal B}(D_{sJ}^-\to \bar{K} \bar{D}^{(*)})$, and then compare the ratios $R_1 \equiv {\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-)/{\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S)\to\mu^{+}\mu^-)$ for $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays and $R_2 \equiv \sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-)/\sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\to \mu^{+}\mu^-)$ for continuum production. We obtain $R_1/R_2 = 9.7\pm 2.3 \pm 1.1$, $6.8 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.8$, $10.2 \pm 3.3 \pm 2.5$, and $3.4 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.5$ for the $D_s^+ D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^{*+} D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^+ D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$, and $D_s^{*+} D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$ final states in the $D_{sJ}^-\to K^{-} \bar{D}^{(*)0}$ modes, respectively. Therefore, the strong decay is expected to dominate in the $\Upsilon(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-$ processes. We also measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K_S^0 D^{*}(2010)^{-})/{\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K^{-} D^{*}(2007)^0) = 0.48 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.02$ and ${\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K_S^0 D^-)/{\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K^{-}D^0) = 0.49 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.02$, which are consistent with isospin symmetry. The second ratio is the first measurement of this quantity. Here, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Search for the double-charmonium state with $\eta_c J/\psi$ at Belle

We measure the cross section of $e^+e^-\rightarrow\eta_c J/\psi$ at the $\Upsilon(nS) (n=1$ -- $5)$ on-resonance and 10.52 GeV off-resonance energy points using the full data sample collected by the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of $955~\rm fb^{-1}$. We also search for double charmonium production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow\eta_c J/\psi$ via initial state radiation near the $\eta_c J/\psi$ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the $e^+e^-\rightarrow\eta_c J/\psi$ process is found with a statistical significance greater than $3.3\sigma$ near the $\eta_c J/\psi$ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.

Search for $CP$ violation in $D^{+}_{(s)}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}h^{+}h^{-}$ $(h=K,\pi)$ decays and observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}$

We search for $CP$ violation by measuring a $T$-odd asymmetry in the Cabibbo-suppressed $D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} $ decay, and in the Cabibbo-favored $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ and $D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}$ decays. We use 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector running at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The $C\!P$-violating $T$-odd parameter ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}$ is measured to be ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})=(0.34\pm0.87\pm0.32)\%,$ ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}(D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})=(-0.46\pm0.63\pm0.38)\%,$ and ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+})=(-3.34\pm2.66\pm0.35)\%,$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}$. The branching fraction is measured relative to that of the analogous Cabibbo-favored decay : $B(D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}) / B(D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}) = (1.36\pm 0.15\pm 0.04)\%$.

First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive $\left|V_{ub}\right|$

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$ using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb${}^{-1}$. We analyze collision events in which one $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic $X_u$ system of the semileptonic $b \to u \ell \bar \nu_\ell$ decay. We separate exclusive $B \to \pi \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ decays from other inclusive $B \to X_u \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit, that utilizes the number of charged pions in the $X_u$ system and the four-momentum transfer $q^2$ between the $B$ and $X_u$ system. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the $B \to \pi \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ form factor, we determine $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| = (3.78 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = (3.88 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| / \left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = 0.97 \pm 0.12$ is compatible with unity.

Study of the muon decay-in-flight in the $\tau^-\to\mu^-\bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$ decay to measure the Michel parameter $\xi^\prime$

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameter $\xi^\prime$ in the $\tau^-\to\mu^-\bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$ decay using the full data sample of $988\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The method is based on the reconstruction of the $\mu^- \to e^- \bar{\nu}_e\nu_\mu$ decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber and relies on the correlation between muon spin and its daughter electron momentum. We study the main sources of the background that can imitate the signal decay, such as kaon and pion decays-in-flight and charged particle scattering on the detector material. Highly efficient methods of their suppression are developed and applied to select 165 signal-candidate events. We obtain $\xi^\prime=0.22\pm0.94\pm0.42$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second one is systematic. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of $\xi^\prime=1$.

First measurement of the Michel parameter $\xi^\prime$ in the $\tau^-\to\mu^-\bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$ decay at Belle

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter $\xi^\prime$ in the $\tau^-\to\mu^-\bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$ decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the $\tau^-\to\mu^-\bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$ events with subsequent muon decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of $988\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately $912\times10^6$ $\tau^+ \tau^-$ pairs. We measure $\xi^\prime=0.22\pm0.94(\text{stat})\pm0.42(\text{syst})$, which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of $\xi^\prime=1$. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.

Study of the lineshape of $X(3872)$ using $B$ decays to $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$

We present a study of the $X(3872)$ lineshape in the decay $B \to X(3872)K\to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$ using a data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The peak near the threshold in the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be $m = 3873.71 ^{+0.56}_{-0.50} ({\rm stat}) \pm0.13 ({\rm syst}) ~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and $\Gamma_0 = 5.2 ^{+2.2}_{-1.5} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 ({\rm syst})~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The branching fraction is found to be ${\cal B} (B^+\to X(3872)K^+) \times {\cal{B}}(X(3872) \to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}) = (0.97 ^{+0.21}_{-0.18} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.10 ({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. The signal from $B^0$ decays is observed for the first time with $5.2\sigma$ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral $B$ decays is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^0\to X(3872)K^0)/{\cal B}(B^+ \to X(3872)K^+) = 1.34^{+0.47}_{-0.40} ({\rm stat}) ^{+0.10}_{-0.12} ({\rm syst})$. The peak is also studied using a Flatt\'{e} lineshape. We determine the lower limit on the $D\overline{D}{}^{*}$ coupling constant $g$ to be $0.075$ at 95% credibility in the parameter region where the ratio of $g$ to the mass difference from the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ threshold is equal to $-15.11~{\rm GeV}^{-1}$, as measured by LHCb.

Search for $B{}^0_s \rightarrow \ell^{\mp} \tau^{\pm}$ with the Semi-leptonic Tagging Method at Belle

We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays $B{}^0_s \rightarrow \ell^{\mp}\tau^{\pm}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$, using the full data sample of $121~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the $\Upsilon(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We use $B{}^0_s \overline{B}{}^0_s$ events in which one $B{}^0_s$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the other in the signal mode. We find no evidence for $B{}^0_s \rightarrow \ell^{\mp}\tau^{\pm}$ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at $90\%$ confidence level as $\mathcal{B}(B{}^0_s \rightarrow e^{\mp}\tau^{\pm}) < 14 \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B{}^0_s \rightarrow \mu^{\mp}\tau^{\pm}) < 7.3 \times 10^{-4}$. Our result represents the first upper limit on the $B{}^0_s \rightarrow e^{\mp}\tau^{\pm}$ decay rate.
