First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super $B$ factory, an asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider with a design luminosity of $8 \times 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, which is around 50 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented.

Measurements of Cherenkov Photons with Silicon Photomultipliers

A novel photon detector, the Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM), has been tested in proximity focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) counters that were exposed to cosmic-ray particles in Ljubljana, and a 2 GeV electron beam at the KEK research facility. This type of RICH detector is a candidate for the particle identification detector upgrade of the BELLE detector at the KEK B-factory, for which the use of SiPMs, microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes or hybrid avalanche photodetectors, rather than traditional Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) is essential due to the presence of high magnetic fields. In both experiments, SiPMs are found to compare favourably with PMTs, with higher photon detection rates per unit area. Through the use of hemispherical and truncated pyramid light guides to concentrate photons onto the active surface area, the light yield increases significantly. An estimate of the contribution to dark noise from false coincidences between SiPMs in an array is also presented.

Spectroscopic Observations of WZ Sge-type Dwarf Novae, GW Lib and V455 And in Superoutburst

We carried out intensive spectroscopic observations of two WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, GW Lib, and V455 And during their superoutbursts in 2007, at 6 observatories. The observations covered the whole of both superoutbursts from the very maximum to the fading tail. We found evidence of the winds having a speed of $\sim$1000 km s$^{-1}$ which blew in GW Lib during the rising phase. The evolution of the hydrogen, helium, and carbon lines suggests flaring of the accretion disk and emergence of the temperature inversion layer on the disk.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

SN 2003du: 480 days in the Life of a Normal Type Ia Supernova

An extensive set of optical and NIR photometry and low-resolution spectra the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2003du was obtained using a number of facilities. The observations started 13 days before B-band maximum light and continued for 480 days with exceptionally good time sampling. The optical photometry was calibrated through the S-correction technique. The UBVRIJHK light curves and the color indices of SN 2003du closely resemble those of normal SNe Ia. SN 2003du reached a B-band maximum of 13.49 (+/-0.02) mag on JD2452766.38 (+/-0.5). We derive a B-band stretch parameter of 0.988 (+/-0.003), which corresponds to dM15=1.02 (+/-0.05), indicative of a SN Ia of standard luminosity. The reddening in the host galaxy was estimated by three methods, and was consistently found to be negligible. We estimate a distance modulus of 32.79 (+/-0.15) mag to the host galaxy, UGC 9391. The peak UVOIR bolometric luminosity of 1.35(+/-0.20) 10^43 erg/s and Arnett's rule implies that M(Ni56)=0.68 (+/-0.14)M_sun of Ni56 was synthesized during the explosion. Modeling of the UVOIR bolometric light curve also indicates M(Ni56) in the range 0.6-0.8 M_sun. The spectral evolution of SN 2003du at both optical and NIR wavelengths also closely resembles normal SNe Ia. In particular, the Si II ratio at maximum R(Si II)=0.22 (+/-0.02) and the time evolution of the blueshift velocities of the absorption line minima are typical. The pre-maximum spectra of SN 2003du showed conspicuous high-velocity features in the Ca II H&K doublet and infrared triplet, and possibly in Si II 6355, lines. We compare the time evolution of the profiles of these lines with other well-observed SNe Ia and we suggest that the peculiar pre-maximum evolution of Si II 6355 line in many SNe Ia is due to the presence of two blended absorption components.

A giant outburst two years before the core-collapse of a massive star

The death of massive stars produces a variety of supernovae, which are linked to the structure of the exploding stars. The detection of several precursor stars of Type II supernovae have been reported, however we do not yet have direct information on the progenitors of the hydrogen deficient Type Ib and Ic supernovae. Here we report that the peculiar Type Ib supernova SN2006jc is spatially coincident with a bright optical transient that occurred in 2004. Spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the supernova leads us to suggest that the progenitor was a carbon-oxygen Wolf-Rayet star embedded within a helium-rich circumstellar medium. There are different possible explanations for this pre-explosion transient. It appears similar to the giant outbursts of Luminous Blue Variables (LBV) of 60-100 solar mass stars, however the progenitor of SN2006jc was helium and hydrogen deficient. An LBV-like outburst of a Wolf-Rayet star could be invoked, but this would be the first observational evidence of such a phenomenon. Alternatively a massive binary system composed of an LBV which erupted in 2004, and a Wolf-Rayet star exploding as SN2006jc, could explain the observations.

Development of Multi-Pixel Photon Counters

The multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) is a newly developed photodetector with an excellent photon counting capability. It also has many attractive features such as small size, high gain, low operation voltage and power consumption, and capability of operating in magnetic fields and in room temperature. The basic performance of samples has been measured. A gain of ~10^6 is achieved with a noise rate less than 1 MHz with 1 p.e. threshold, and cross-talk probability of less than 30% at room temperature. The photon detection efficiency for green light is twice or more that of the photomultiplier tubes. It is found that the basic performance of the MPPC is satisfactory for use in real experiments.

SN 2005cs in M51 I. The first month of evolution of a subluminous SN II plateau

Early time optical observations of supernova (SN) 2005cs in the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51), are reported. Photometric data suggest that SN 2005cs is a moderately under-luminous Type II plateau supernova (SN IIP). The SN was unusually blue at early epochs (U-B ~ -0.9 about three days after explosion) which indicates very high continuum temperatures. The spectra show relatively narrow P-Cygni features, suggesting ejecta velocities lower than observed in more typical SNe IIP. The earliest spectra show weak absorption features in the blue wing of the He I 5876A absorption component and, less clearly, of H$β$ and H$α$. Based on spectral modelling, two different interpretations can be proposed: these features may either be due to high-velocity H and He I components, or (more likely) be produced by different ions (N II, Si II). Analogies with the low-luminosity, $^{56}$Ni-poor, low-velocity SNe IIP are also discussed. While a more extended spectral coverage is necessary in order to determine accurately the properties of the progenitor star, published estimates of the progenitor mass seem not to be consistent with stellar evolution models.

Averages of b-hadron Properties at the End of 2005

This article reports world averages for measurements on b-hadron properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using the available results as of at the end of 2005. In the averaging, the input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and all known correlations are taken into account. The averages include lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, branching fractions of B meson decays to final states with open charm, charmonium and no charm, and measurements related to CP asymmetries.

A novel type of proximity focusing RICH counter with multiple refractive index aerogel radiator

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector, with the radiator consisting of two or more aerogel layers of different refractive indices, has been tested in 1-4 GeV/c pion beams at KEK. Essentially, a multiple refractive index aerogel radiator allows for an increase in Cherenkov photon yield on account of the increase in overall radiator thickness, while avoiding the simultaneous degradation in single photon angular resolution associated with the increased uncertainty of the emission point. With the refractive index of consecutive layers suitably increasing in the downstream direction, one may achieve overlapping of the Cherenkov rings from a single charged particle. In the opposite case of decreasing refractive index, one may obtain well separated rings. In the former combination an approximately 40% increase in photon yield is accompanied with just a minor degradation in single photon angular resolution. The impact of this improvement on the pion/kaon separation at the upgraded Belle detector is discussed.

Measurement of the Xi-p Scattering Cross Sections at Low Energy

In this paper we report cross-section measurements for $Ξ^-p$ elastic and inelastic scatterings at low energy using a scintillating fiber active target. Upper limit on the total cross-section for the elastic scattering was found to be 24 mb at 90% confidence level, and the total cross section for the $Ξ^-p\toΛΛ$ reaction was found to be $4.3^{+6.3}_{-2.7}$ mb. We compare the results with currently competing theoretical estimates.

Development of a multi-pixel hybrid photo-detector with high quantum efficiency and gain

A hybrid photo-detector (HPD) consisting of a photocathode and a multi-pixel avalanche diode (MP-AD) was developed a few years ago. Our previous studies showed that its inherent potential for high resolution photon counting could be further enhanced by reducing fluctuations in charge loss in the dead layer at the entrance of the MP-AD. In this paper, we report on the improvement with the newly developed HPD whose encapsulated MP-AD has a thinner dead layer than before. It is demonstrated that the new HPD has much better energy resolution, which enables clearer counting up to nine photoelectrons. Further enhancement of the photocathode sensitivity of the HPD is also discussed.

Dramatic Spectral Evolution of WZ Sagittae during the 2001 Superoutburst

We carried out optical spectroscopic observations of the most enigmatic dwarf nova WZ Sge in 11 nights during the 2001 superoutburst. Our observations covered the period from the initial phase, several hours before the maximum, to the ninth maximum of the rebrightening phase. The first spectrum shows absorption lines of H I (except for Halpha), He I, and Na I, as well as emission lines of He\II, C III/N III, and Halpha in doubly-peaked shapes. The same spectrum shows the emission lines of C IV and N IV which are the first detection in dwarf novae. The spectral features dramatically changed in various time scales. For example, the peak separations of the emission lines of H I and He II changed from ~700 km/s to 1300 km/s, and one of the peaks dominated over an orbital period in the genuine-superhump era, but the dominant peak interchanged with the orbital phase in the early-superhump era. The lines of H I and He I were in emission at minima of the rebrightening phase (with no high-excitation lines, nor Na I), while they became in absorption at maxima. We report on these observational results in detail and their implications concerning the outburst mechanism, two types of superhumps, and variation of the disk structure.

Studies of Proximity Focusing RICH with an aerogel radiator using Flat-panel multi-anode PMTs (Hamamatsu H8500)

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector using aerogel as the radiator has been studied for an upgrade of the Belle detector at the KEK-B-factory. We constructed a prototype Cherenkov counter using a 4 x 4 array of 64-channel flat-panel multi-anode PMTs (Hamamatsu H8500) with a large effective area. The aerogel samples were made with a new technique to obtain a higher transmission length at a high refractive index (n=1.05). Multi-channel PMTs are read-out with analog memory chips. The detector was tested at the KEK-PS pi2 beam line in November, 2002. To evaluate systematically the performance of the detector, tests were carried out with various aerogel samples using pion beams with momenta between 0.5 GeV/c and 4 GeV/c. The typical angular resolution was around 14 mrad, and the average number of detected photoelectrons was around 6. We expect that pions and kaons can be separated at a 4 sigma level at 4 GeV/c.

Tests of a proximity focusing RICH with aerogel as radiator

Using aerogel as radiator and multianode PMTs for photon detection, a proximity focusing Cherenkov ring imaging detector has been constructed and tested in the KEK $π$2 beam. The aim is to experimentally study the basic parameters such as resolution of the single photon Cherenkov angle and number of detected photons per ring. The resolution obtained is well approximated by estimates of contributions from pixel size and emission point uncertainty. The number of detected photons per Cherenkov ring is in good agreement with estimates based on aerogel and detector characteristics. The values obtained turn out to be rather low, mainly due to Rayleigh scattering and to the relatively large dead space between the photocathodes. A light collection system or a higher fraction of the photomultiplier active area, together with better quality aerogels are expected to improve the situation. The reduction of Cherenkov yield, for charged particle impact in the vicinity of the aerogel tile side wall, has also been measured.
