59-Co and 75-As NMR Investigation of Electron-Doped High Tc Superconductor BaFe(1.8)Co(0.2)As(2) (Tc = 22K)

We report an NMR investigation of the superconductivity in BaFe(2)As(2) induced by Co doping (Tc=22K). We demonstrate that Co atoms form an alloy with Fe atoms and donate carriers without creating localized moments. Our finding strongly suggests that the underlying physics of iron-pnictide superconductors is quite different from the widely accepted physical picture of high Tc cuprates as doped Mott insulators. We also show a crossover of electronic properties into a low temperature pseudo-gap phase with a pseudo-gap Delta 560K, where chi(spin) constant and resisitivty T. The NMR Knight shift below Tc decreases for both along the c-axis and ab-plane, and is consistent with the singlet pairing scenario.

^{59}Co NMR evidence for charge ordering below T_{CO}\sim 51 K in Na_{0.5}CoO_2

The CoO$_{2}$ layers in sodium-cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ may be viewed as a spin $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice doped with charge carriers. The underlying physics of the cobaltates is very similar to that of the high $T_{c}$ cuprates. We will present unequivocal $^{59}$Co NMR evidence that below $T_{CO}\sim51 K$, the insulating ground state of the itinerant antiferromagnet Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_{2}$ ($T_{N}\sim 86 K$) is induced by charge ordering.

^{63}Cu, ^{35}Cl, and ^{1}H NMR in the S=1/2 Kagomé Lattice ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}

ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ ($S=1/2$) is a promising new candidate for an ideal Kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet, because there is no magnetic phase transition down to $\sim$50 mK. We investigated its local magnetic and lattice environments with NMR techniques. We demonstrate that the intrinsic local spin susceptibility {\it decreases} toward T=0, but that slow freezing of the lattice near $\sim$50 K, presumably associated with OH bonds, contributes to a large increase of local spin susceptibility and its distribution. Spin dynamics near T=0 obey a power-law behavior in high magnetic fields.

Sodium vacancy ordering and the co-existence of localized spins and itinerant charges in NaxCoO2

The sodium cobaltate family (NaxCoO2) is unique among transition metal oxides because the Co sits on a triangular lattice and its valence can be tuned over a wide range by varying the Na concentration x. Up to now detailed modeling of the rich phenomenology (which ranges from unconventional superconductivity to enhanced thermopower) has been hampered by the difficulty of controlling pure phases. We discovered that certain Na concentrations are specially stable and are associated with superlattice ordering of the Na clusters. This leads naturally to a picture of co-existence of localized spins and itinerant charge carriers. For x = 0.84 we found a remarkably small Fermi energy of 87 K. Our picture brings coherence to a variety of measurements ranging from NMR to optical to thermal transport. Our results also allow us to take the first step towards modeling the mysterious ``Curie-Weiss'' metal state at x = 0.71. We suggest the local moments may form a quantum spin liquid state and we propose experimental test of our hypothesis.

17-O NMR studies of a triangular-lattice superconductor Na{x}CoO{2}yH{2}O

We report the first 17-O NMR studies of a triangular-lattice superconductor Na{1/3}CoO{2}-[4/3]H{2}O and the host material Na{x}CoO{2} (x=0.35 and 0.72). Knight shift measurements reveal that p-d hybridization induces sizable spin polarization in the O triangular-lattice layers. Water-intercalation makes CoO{2} planes homogeneous, and enhances low frequency spin fluctuations near T{c}=4.5 K at some finite wave-vectors different from both the ferromagnetic and ``120 degree'' modes.

Spin-Dynamics in the Carrier-Doped $S=1/2$ Triangular-Lattice of Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$-yH$_{2}$O

We probed the local electronic properties of the mixed-valent Co(+4-x) triangular-lattice in Na{x}CoO{2}-yH{2}O by 59-Co NMR. We observed two distinct types of Co sites for x>=1/2, but the valence seems averaged out for x~1/3. Local spin fluctuations exhibit qualitatively the same trend down to ~100 K regardless of the carrier-concentration x, and hence the nature of the electronic ground state. A canonical Fermi-liquid behavior emerges below ~100 K only for x~1/3.

Effective Actions of Matrix Models on Homogeneous Spaces

We evaluate the effective actions of supersymmetric matrix models on fuzzy S^2\times S^2 up to the two loop level. Remarkably it turns out to be a consistent solution of IIB matrix model. Based on the power counting and SUSY cancellation arguments, we can identify the 't Hooft coupling and large N scaling behavior of the effective actions to all orders. In the large N limit, the quantum corrections survive except in 2 dimensional limits. They are O(N) and O(N^{4\over 3}) for 4 and 6 dimensional spaces respectively. We argue that quantum effects single out 4 dimensionality among fuzzy homogeneous spaces.

The Most General and Renormalizable Maximal Abelian Gauge

We construct the most general gauge fixing and the associated Faddeev-Popov ghost term for the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, which leaves the global U(1) gauge symmetry intact (i.e., the most general Maximal Abelian gauge). We show that the most general form involves eleven independent gauge parameters. Then we require various symmetries which help to reduce the number of independent parameters for obtaining the simpler form. In the simplest case, the off-diagonal part of the gauge fixing term obtained in this way is identical to the modified maximal Abelian gauge term with two gauge parameters which was proposed in the previous paper from the viewpoint of renormalizability. In this case, moreover, we calculate the beta function, anomalous dimensions of all fields and renormalization group functions of all gauge parameters in perturbation theory to one-loop order. We also discuss the implication of these results to obtain information on low-energy physics of QCD.

Quantum Corrections on Fuzzy Sphere

We investigate quantum corrections in non-commutative gauge theory on fuzzy sphere. We study translation invariant models which classically favor a single fuzzy sphere with U(1) gauge group. We evaluate the effective actions up to the two loop level. We find non-vanishing quantum corrections at each order even in supersymmetric models. In particular the two loop contribution favors U(n) gauge group over U(1) contrary to the tree action in a deformed IIB matrix model with a Myers term. We further observe close correspondences to 2 dimensional quantum gravity.

{63}Cu NQR Study of the Inhomogeneous Electronic State in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4}

We report detailed systematic measurements of the spatial variation in electronic states in the high T{c} superconductor La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} (0.04<= x <= 0.16) using {63}Cu NQR for {63}Cu isotope enriched poly-crystalline samples. We demonstrate that the spatial variation in local hole concentration {63}x{local} given by {63}x{local} = x +/- {63}Dx{local}, where x is the nominal hole concentration and {63}Dx{local} is defined as the amplitude (or extent) of the spatial variation, is reflected in the frequency dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate {63}1/T{1} across the inhomogeneous linebroadening of the {63}Cu NQR spectrum. By using high precision measurements of the temperature dependence of {63}1/T_{1} at various positions across the {63}Cu NQR lineshape, we demonstrate that {63}Dx{local} increases below 500 - 600 K and reaches values as large as {63}Dx{local} / x ~ 0.5 in the temperature region > 150 K. By incorporating the random positioning of {+2}Sr donor ions in the lattice in a novel approach, a lower bound to the length scale of the spatial variation {63}R{patch} is deduced by fitting the entire {63}Cu NQR spectrum (including the ``B'' -line) using a patch-by-patch distribution of the spatial variation {63}x{local} with the patch radius {63}R_{patch} > 3.0 nm as the only free parameter. A corresponding upper bound to the amplitude of the spatial variation {63}Dx{patch} (~ 1/{63}R_{patch}) is deduced within the model, and consistent results are found with {63}Dx{local} . We also deduce the onset temperature T{Q} (> 400 K) for local orthorhombic lattice distortions which, in the region x > 0.04, is found to be larger than the onset temperature of long range structural order.

What has NMR taught us about stripes and inhomogeneity?

The purpose of this brief invited paper is to summarize what we have (not) learned from NMR on stripes and inhomogeneity in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4}. We explain that the reality is far more complicated than generally accepted.

Novel Spin-Gap Behavior in Layered S=1/2 Quantum Spin System TiOCl

We have investigated the spin fluctuations and their interplay with lattice instabilities in a layered S=1/2 quantum spin system TiOCl. Our Ti and Cl NMR data demonstrate a pseudo spin-gap behavior below T*=135 K, followed by successive phase transitions at T_c1=94K and T_c2=66K into the singlet ground state with an unusually large energy gap E_g=430K. The broad distribution of the local electric field gradient in the intermediate phase between T_c1 and T_c2 suggests unconventional spin and lattice (probably orbital) states with an emerging spin-gap.

17O NMR Study of the Local Charge State in the Hole Doped Cu2O3 Two-Leg Spin-Ladder A14Cu24O41 (A=La6Ca8, Sr14, Sr11Ca3, Sr6Ca8)

NMR measurements of the ^{17}O nuclear quadrupole interactions, ^{17}ν_{Q}, show that the charge environment of the S=1/2 Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg spin-ladder layer of hole-doped A_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} changes dramatically above a certain temperature, T*. This temperature, T*, decreases with additional doping and is correlated with the magnetic crossover from the spin gap regime to the paramagnetic regime. We demonstrate that these changes in ^{17}ν_{Q} are consistent with an increase in the effective hole concentration in the Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg ladder above T*. The effective hole concentration increases primarily in the oxygen 2pσorbitals.

A Confining String Theory Derivable from Yang-Mills Theory due to a Novel Vacuum Condensate

We discuss within the weak-field approximation and the derivative expansion how the area law of the Wilson loop follows directly from the vacuum condensate of mass dimension 2, i.e., simultaneous Bose-Einstein condensation of gluon pair and ghost-antighost pair. Such a novel vacuum condensate was recently claimed to exist as the non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of a BRST-invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2. First of all, we use a version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem to rewrite the Wilson loop line integral to a surface integral. Then we convert the Yang-Mills theory with an insertion of the Wilson loop operator into a bosonic string theory with a rigidity term by way of an equivalent antisymmetric tensor gauge theory which couples to the surface spanned by the Wilson loop. This result suggests an intimate relationship between quark confinement and mass gap in Yang-Mills theory. In fact, the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the dual superconductivity is also derivable by making use of duality transformations without using the naive Abelian projection and without breaking the global color invariance of the original Yang-Mills theory. This feature is desirable from the viewpoint of color confinement preserving color symmetry.

Systematic (63)Cu NQR and (89)Y NMR Study of Spin Dynamics in Y(1-z)Ca(z)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) Across Superconductor-Insulator Boundary

We demonstrate that the spin dynamics in underdoped Y(1-z)Ca(z)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) for y=~6.0 exhibit qualitatively the same behavior to underdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) for an equal amount of hole concentration p=z/2=x<0.11. However,a spin-gap appears as more holes are doped into the CuO(2) plane by increasing the oxygen concentration to y=~6.5 for a fixed value of Ca concentration z. Our results also suggest that Ca doping causes disorder effects that enhance the low frequency spin fluctuations.

Renormalizing a BRST-invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2 in Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the renormalization of a BRST and anti-BRST invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2 in Yang-Mills theory with the general BRST and anti-BRST invariant gauge fixing term of the Lorentz type. The interest of this study stems from a recent claim that the non-vanishing vacuum condensate of the composite operator in question can be an origin of mass gap and quark confinement in any manifestly covariant gauge, as proposed by one of the authors. First, we obtain the renormalization group flow of the Yang-Mills theory. Next, we show the multiplicative renormalizability of the composite operator and that the BRST and anti-BRST invariance of the bare composite operator is preserved under the renormalization. Third, we perform the operator product expansion of the gluon and ghost propagators and obtain the Wilson coefficient corresponding to the vacuum condensate of mass dimension 2. Finally, we discuss the connection of this work with the previous works and argue the physical implications of the obtained results.

Superconductivity and Spin Fluctuations in the Electron-Doped Infinitely-Layered High Tc Superconductor Sr$_0.9$La$_0.1$CuO$_2$ (Tc=42K)

This paper describes the first 63-Cu NMR study of an electron-doped infinitely-layered high Tc superconductor Sr$_0.9$La$_0.1$CuO$_2$ (Tc=42K). The spin dynamics in the normal state above Tc exhibits qualitatively the same behavior as some hole-doped materials with significantly enhanced spin fluctuations. Below Tc, we observed no signature of a Hebel-Slichter coherence peak, suggesting an unconventional nature of the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.
