Direct measurement of the in-medium $\eta^{\prime}$ mass spectrum through the $\gamma\gamma$ decay channel

We measured the invariant mass of the $\eta^{\prime}(958)$ meson through the $\eta^{\prime}\to\gamma\gamma$ decay channel to search for possible character change of $\eta^{\prime}$ in a nuclear medium. The measured invariant-mass spectra were analyzed by fitting realistic spectral functions. An enhancement was observed in the lower tail of the $\eta^{\prime}$ mass peak for low-momentum ($P_{\gamma\gamma} < 1$~$\mathrm{GeV/c}$) events. Three statistical methods were applied to assess the significance of the enhancement. All methods yield a statistical significance above 3.7$\sigma$. The spectral fitting indicates a mass reduction of $57.5^{+~5.7}_{-27.8}$~$\mathrm{MeV/c}^{2}$. Our result provides the first evidence for an in-medium spectral modification of the $\eta^{\prime}$ meson obtained through a direct measurement of its invariant mass.

Evidence for a $\bar{K}NN$ quasi-bound state in the $\gamma d \to K^0\Lambda p$ reaction

The $\gamma d \to K^{0}\Lambda p$ reaction has been studied to search for a $\bar{K}NN$ quasi-bound state using the LEPS2 solenoid spectrometer at SPring-8. A localized enhancement concentrated at low $q$ is observed in the $(M_{\Lambda p},q)$ distribution below the $K^-pp$ mass threshold, where $M_{\Lambda p}$ is the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass and $q \equiv |\vec{p}_{\gamma}-\vec{p}_{K^{0}}| = |\vec{p}_{\Lambda p}|$ is the momentum transfer. A two-dimensional $(M_{\Lambda p},q)$ fit demonstrates that the enhancement near the threshold is statistically significant, yielding a local significance of $7.3,\sigma$. The enhancement is characterized by effective shape parameters including the Breit--Wigner mass $M$ and width $\Gamma$, and a Gaussian form-factor momentum scale $Q$: $M = 2.354 \pm 0.011(\mathrm{stat.})^{+0.009}_{-0.005}(\mathrm{syst.})~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$, $\Gamma = 0.055 \pm 0.023(\mathrm{stat.})^{+0.031}_{-0.009}(\mathrm{syst.})~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$, and $Q = 0.350 \pm 0.041(\mathrm{stat.})^{+0.035}_{-0.010}(\mathrm{syst.})~\mathrm{GeV}/c$. The obtained results support the existence of a $\bar{K}NN$ quasi-bound state in photoproduction.

Comprehensive measurement of $\eta^\prime$ photoproduction off the proton at $E_\gamma < 2.4$ $\mathrm{GeV}$

For the spectroscopy of nucleon resonances at the total energies from the $\eta^\prime$-meson production threshold to $2.32$ $\mathrm{GeV}$, photon beam asymmetries of the reaction $\gamma p \to \eta^\prime p$ were measured together with total and differential cross sections by analyzing the two decay modes $\eta^\prime \to \gamma \gamma$ and $\pi^0 \pi^0 \eta$. New constraints for amplitude decomposition were given by the first-time result of photon beam asymmetries at $E_\gamma > 1.84$ $\mathrm{GeV}$ and the most precise data of differential cross sections to date at extremely backward $\eta^\prime$ angles. The possibility of a larger coupling constant of the $\eta^\prime$-nucleon system to the $N(2250)$ resonance was implied in the partial wave analyses using the present data.

Fingerprints of Mott and Slater gaps in the core-level photoemission spectra of antiferromagnetic iridates

We present Ir $4f$ core-level hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) experiments conducted across antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering transition in Ruddlesden-Popper iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The Ir $4f$ spectra exhibit distinct changes between the AFM and paramagnetic (PM) phases, with the spectral difference $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ showing a contrasting behavior in the two compounds. By employing computational simulations using the local-density approximation combined with the dynamical mean-field theory method, we elucidate that $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ primary reflects the Slater or Mott-Hubbard character of the AFM insulating state rather than material specific details. This sensitivity to fine low-energy electronic structure arises from the dependence of charge-transfer responses to the sudden creation of a localized core hole on both metal-insulator transitions and long-range AFM ordering. Our result broadens the applications of core-level HAXPES as a tool for characterization of electronic structure.

Hybridized and Localized 4f Electronic States of Nd-based Intermetallic Compounds in Cubic Symmetry Probed by High-Energy Photoemission

We have performed soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopies on NdTi2Al20 and NdBe13 which show antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures. The Nd 3d core-level photoemission and Nd 3d-4f valence-band resonant photoemission spectra show finite 4f4 initial-state components in addition to the 4f3 configurations attributed to the c-f hybridization effects in NdTi2Al20, while the 4f3 initial-state components with localized character are dominant in NdBe13. These results imply the emergence of overscreening channel due to the two-channel Kondo effect in NdTi2Al20 through the the strong c-f hybridization effect.

Prospects for Pentaquark Baryon Search with the Upgraded LEPS2 Facility

We present prospects for the $Θ^+$ pentaquark baryon search using the newly constructed LEPS2 facility at SPring-8. The LEPS2 detector system features significant improvements in acceptance for multi-particle final states compared to previous experiments. Our search employs two complementary strategies: direct production in the $γn \to K^-Θ^+$ reaction using a liquid deuterium target with a photon beam up to 2.4 GeV, and $\bar{K}^{*0}$-associated $Θ^+$ production using a liquid hydrogen target with a photon beam up to 2.9 GeV. The extended acceptance covers both forward and large angle regions, effectively spanning the kinematic regions explored by previous LEPS and CLAS experiments. The large acceptance and improved resolution of LEPS2, combined with these complementary approaches, provide unprecedented sensitivity for establishing the existence of the $Θ^+$ or placing definitive upper limits on its production.

Superconducting LaPtH$_{ 6 }$ with triatomic hydrogen units

To veryfy "hot supreconductivity" recently proposed in lanthanum hydride-based compounds, we explored thermodynamically stable and superconducting phases in the lanthanum (La)-platinum (Pt)-hydrogen (H) ternary system at 20 GPa using an evolutionary construction scheme of a formation-enthalpy convex hull, universal neural network potential calculations, and density functional theory calculations. Although we found no evidence of the hot superconductivity in this ternary system, we predicted a unique compound, LaPtH$_{ 6 }$, which has equilateral triangular H$_{ 3 }$ units nearly forming a two-dimensional kagome lattice between La and Pt layers and shows the superconductivity at 18.67 K. This structure is dynamically stable from ambient pressure to at least 200 GPa and the superconducting critical temperature increases from 13.51 to 40.63 K.

Measurement of the mesonic decay branch of the $\bar{K}\!N\!N$ quasi-bound state

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to π\!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $Λ(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $π\! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $π\! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to π\! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $Γ_{πΛN} \sim Γ_{πΣN}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $Λ$(1405).

Ultrafast Anisotropic Polarization Dynamics of Electronic Ferroelectrics LuFe2O4

Femtosecond time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements were performed at room temperature on a single crystal of LuFe2O4, which has recently attracted attention as an electronic ferroelectric material in which polarization occurs due to the real-space arrangement of Fe2+ and Fe3+. We irradiated the crystal with 800 nm laser pulses, traced the subsequent SHG changes, and observed anisotropic polarization dynamics: immediately after photoexcitation, the in-plane (ab-plane) component of the SHG greatly reduced, while the inter-plane (c-axis) SHG increased. This means that a hidden photoexcited state, in which the in-plane charge ordering is broken but the polarization along c-axis direction enhanced, has been created by photoexcitation, indicating that the electronic ferroelectricity can be controlled on a femtosecond scale.

Near-Ultraviolet Radiation toward Molecular Cloud N4 in W 50/SS 433: Evidence for Direct Interaction of the Jet with Molecular Cloud

We compared the molecular clouds in the western part of SS 433 with near-ultraviolet radiation data obtained from GALEX. Near-ultraviolet radiation is prominently confirmed toward only N4, while no near-ultraviolet radiation is detected toward N1, N2, and N3. The radiative region of near-ultraviolet radiation is nearly the same as the CO-emitting region in N4, and does not extend beyond the jet seen in X-ray radiation. Near-ultraviolet radiation cannot be explained solely by broadband continuous radiation and may originate from line emissions. The intensity of near-ultraviolet radiation exhibits an anti-correlation with that of 13CO(J=3-2) emission. This anti-correlation, along with strong far-infrared radiation in the region with weaker near-ultraviolet radiation intensity compared to its surroundings, suggests that near-ultraviolet radiation originates from behind the molecular cloud, heating up the interstellar dust in N4. Subsequently, the dust in N4 re-radiates in the far-infrared band. In the same region, a high peak T_MB ratio of 12CO(J=3-2)/12CO(J=1-0) of ~0.9, and a high kinetic temperature of T_k ~56 K in the molecular cloud indicate that CO molecules are highly excited, and the molecular cloud is heated through photoelectric heating. This heating results from electrons released due to the photoelectric effect caused by the phenomenon where interstellar dust absorbs near-ultraviolet radiation. In terms of the timescale of near-ultraviolet radiation originating from line emissions, near-ultraviolet radiation towards N4 cannot be explained by the shock of the blast wave from a supernova that created W 50. These findings also suggest that N4 directly interacts with the jet from SS 433. As a result of this direct interaction, near-ultraviolet radiation is emitted from an interacting layer between the jet and N4.

Bulk superconductivity in Pb-substituted BiS$_{\bf 2}$-based compounds studied by hard-x-ray spectroscopy

In this study, we investigate the bulk electronic structure of Pb-substituted LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals, using two types of hard-x-ray spectroscopy. High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a spectral change at low temperatures. Using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we find that the temperature-induced change originates from a structural phase transition, similar to the pressure-induced transition in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. This finding suggests that the mechanism of bulk superconductivity induced by Pb substitution is the same as that under high pressure. Furthermore, a novel low-valence state with a mixture of divalent and trivalent Bi ions is discovered using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with the aid of DFT calculations.

Impact of the ground-state $4f$ symmetry for anisotropic $cf$-hybridization in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$

We report the ground-state symmetry of the Ce $4f$ states in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, yielding anisotropic $cf$-hybridization between the Ce $4f$ states and conducting electrons. By analyzing linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption and core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectra, the $4f$ symmetry is determined as $Σ$-type $Γ_{7}$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge $4p$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$.

Pole position of $Λ(1405)$ measured in $d(K^-,n)πΣ$ reactions

We measured a set of $π^\pmΣ^\mp$, $π^0Σ^0$, and $π^-Σ^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrowπΣ$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $Λ(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron at incident energies below 1.15 GeV

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $π^0 η$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $π^0 η$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πη}$, the $π^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πd}$, the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{ηd}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $dσ/dΩ_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $dσ/dΩ_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $dσ/dM_{ηd}$ near the $ηd$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $ηd$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $η$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $π^0η$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $η$-nuclear interaction are also discussed.

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of $η$ photoproduction on the proton at $E_γ$ = 1.3-2.4 GeV

We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $η$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $γp \to ηp$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{θ^η_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $γ$'s produced by an $η$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $η$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $η$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies.

SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline: A facility to produce a multi-GeV photon beam via laser Compton scattering

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

Pairwise scattering and bound states of spherical microorganisms

The dynamic interactions between pairs of swimming microorganisms underpin the collective behaviour of larger suspensions, but accurately calculating pairwise collisions has typically required the use of numerical simulations in which hydrodynamic interactions are fully resolved. In this paper, we utilise analytical expressions for forces and torques acting on two closely separated spherical squirmers -- accurate to second order in the ratio of cell-cell spacing to squirmer radius -- in order to calculate their scattering dynamics. Attention is limited to squirmers whose orientation vectors lie in the same plane. We characterise the outgoing angles of pairs of bottom-heavy squirmers in terms of their incoming angles, the squirmer parameter $β$, and the strength of the external gravitational field, discovering transient scattering, stationary bound states, pairwise swimming motion, and circular orbits. These results compare well with full numerical solutions obtained using boundary element methods, highlighting the utility of lubrication theory. We expect these results will be useful for the foundations of mesoscale continuum models for suspensions of spherical microorganisms.

Recent results and future prospects of kaonic nuclei at J-PARC

$\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($Λ(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. In the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, we will measure the $\bar K NNN$ ($A=3$) system as a first step toward a comprehensive study.
