Laser spectroscopy of the $^2S_{1/2} - ^2P_{1/2}$, $^2P_{3/2}$ transitions in stored and cooled relativistic C$^{3+}$ ions

The $^2S_{1/2} - ^2P_{1/2}$ and $^2S_{1/2} - ^2P_{3/2}$ transitions in Li-like carbon ions stored and cooled at a velocity of $β\approx 0.47$ in the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt have been investigated in a laser spectroscopy experiment. Resonance wavelengths were obtained using a new continuous-wave UV laser system and a novel extreme UV (XUV) detection system to detect forward emitted fluorescence photons. The results obtained for the two transitions are compared to existing experimental and theoretical data. A discrepancy found in an earlier laser spectroscopy measurement at the ESR with results from plasma spectroscopy and interferometry has been resolved and agreement between experiment and theory is confirmed.

Polarization-Dependent Disappearance of a Resonance Signal -- Indication for Optical Pumping in a Storage Ring?

We report on laser spectroscopic measurements on Li$^+$ ions in the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Driving the $2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{3}{2}) \,\leftrightarrow\,2p\,^3\!P_2\;(F=\frac{5}{2}) \leftrightarrow 2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{5}{2})$ $Λ$-transition in $^7$Li$^+$ with two superimposed laser beams it was found that the use of circularly polarized light leads to a disappearance of the resonance structure in the fluorescence signal. This can be explained by optical pumping into a dark state of polarized ions. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of this process that supports the interpretation of optical pumping and demonstrates that the polarization induced by the laser light must then be at least partially maintained during the round trip of the ions in the storage ring. Such polarized ion beams in storage rings will provide opportunities for new experiments, especially on parity violation.

New Test of Modulated Electron Capture Decay of Hydrogen-Like $^{142}$Pm Ions: Precision Measurement of Purely Exponential Decay

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7) s$^{-1}$ for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7) s$^{-1}$ for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

Detection system for forward emitted photons at the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI

A single photon counting system has been developed for efficient detection of forward emitted fluorescence photons at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI. The system employs a movable parabolic mirror with a central slit that can be positioned around the ion beam and a selected low noise photomultiplier for detection of the collected photons. Compared to the previously used system of mirror segments installed inside the ESR the collection efficiency for forward-emitted photons is improved by more than a factor of 5. No adverse effects on the stored ion beam have been observed during operation besides a small drop in the ion current of about 5% during movement of the mirror into the beam position. The new detection system has been used in the LIBELLE experiment at ESR and enabled for the first time the detection of the ground-state hyperfine M1 transition in lithium-like bismuth (209Bi80+) in a laser-spectroscopy measurement.

Modern Ives-Stilwell Experiments At Storage Rings: Large Boosts Meet High Precision

We give a brief overview of time dilation tests using high-resolution laser spectroscopy at heavy-ion storage rings. We reflect on the various methods used to eliminate the first-order Doppler effect and on the pitfalls encountered, and comment on possible extensions at future facilities providing relativistic heavy ion beams at $γ\gg 1$.

Comment on "Missing Transverse-Doppler Effect in Time-Dilation Experiments with High-Speed Ions"

In an article "Missing Transverse-Doppler Effect in Time-Dilation Experiments with High-Speed Ions" by S. Devasia [arXiv:1003.2970v1], our recent Doppler shift experiments on fast ion beams are reanalyzed. Contrary to our analysis, Devasia concludes that our results provide an "indication of Lorentz violation". We argue that this conclusion is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our experimental scheme and reiterate that our results are in excellent agreement with Special Relativity.

Extended Cluster Model for Light, and Medium Nuclei

The structures, the electromagnetic transitions, and the beta decay strengths of exotic nuclei are investigated within an extended cluster model. We start by deriving an effective nuclear Hamiltonian within the $S_2$ correlation operator. Tensor forces are introduced in a perturbative expansion which includes up to the second order terms. Within this Hamiltonian we calculate the distributions and the radii of A=3,~4 nuclei. For exotic nuclei characterized by n valence protons/neutrons we excite the structure of the closed shell nuclei via mixed modes formed by considering correlations operators of higher order. Good results have been obtained for the calculated transitions and for the beta decay transition probabilities.

Correlated EoM and Distributions for A=6 Nuclei

Energy spectra and electromagnetic transitions of nuclei are strongly depending from the correlations of the bound nucleons. Two particle correlations are responsible for the scattering of model particles either to low momentum- or to high momentum-states. The low momentum states form the model space while the high momentum states are used to calculate the G-matrix. The three and higher order particle correlations do not play a role in the latter calculation especially if the correlations induced by the scattering operator are of sufficient short range. They modify however, via the long tail of the nuclear potential, the Slater determinant of the A particles by generating excited Slater's determinants. In this work the influence of the correlations on the level structure and ground state distributions of even open shell nuclei is analyzed via the boson dynamic correlation model BDCM. The model is based on the unitary operator $e^S$ ({\it S} is the correlation operator) formalism which in this paper is presented within a non perturbative approximation. The low lying spectrum calculated for $^6$Li reproduce very well the experimental spectrum while for $^6$He a charge radius slightly larger than that obtained within the isotopic-shift (IS) theory has been calculated. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been obtained without the introduction of a genuine three body force.

Transition energy and lifetime for the ground state hyperfine splitting of high Z lithiumlike ions

The ground state hyperfine splitting values and the transition probabilities between the hyperfine structure components of high Z lithiumlike ions are calculated in the range $Z=49-83$. The relativistic, nuclear, QED and interelectronic interaction corrections are taken into account. It is found that the Bohr-Weisskopf effect can be eliminated in a combination of the hyperfine splitting values of the hydrogenlike and lithiumlike ions of an isotope. This gives a possibility for testing the QED effects in a combination of the strong electric and magnetic fields of the heavy nucleus. Using the experimental result for the $1s$ hyperfine splitting in ^{209}Bi^{82+}, the 2s hyperfine splitting in ^{209}Bi^{80+} is calculated to be ΔE=0.7969(2) eV.

Ground state hyperfine splitting of high Z hydrogenlike ions

The ground state hyperfine splitting values of high Z hydrogenlike ions are calculated. The relativistic, nuclear and QED corrections are taken into account. The nuclear magnetization distribution correction (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect) is evaluated within the single particle model with the g_{S}-factor chosen to yield the observed nuclear moment. An additional contribution caused by the nuclear spin-orbit interaction is included in the calculation of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. It is found that the theoretical value of the wavelength of the transition between the hyperfine splitting components in ^{165}Ho^{66+} is in good agreement with experiment.
