Defect-induced modulation of magnetic, electronic and optical properties of double perovskite oxide La$_2$CoMnO$_6$

Electron- and hole-doped La$_2$CoMnO$_6$(LCMO) are investigated using first principles DFT calculations. Hole and electron doping are achieved respectively by introducing Sr$^{2+}$ at La$^{3+}$ sites and by inducing O-site vacancies in LCMO. Electronic structure calculations suggest that hole doping alters the charge and valence state of Co ions, whereas electron doping influences the Mn ions. Introduction of defects is found to enhance antisite disorder(ASD) at Co/Mn site, which is expected to influence the magnetodielectric properties of the system. Our calculations suggest that while ASD and/or hole doping induces half-metallicity in LCMO, electron doping restores its insulating state. Mean-field calculations performed using exchange constants obtained by mapping DFT total energies of different collinear spin configurations onto the Ising Hamiltonian find that defects tend to reduce the Curie temperature ($T_C$). Interestingly, the calculated linear optical properties of the system suggest that the material becomes optically active with high values of birefringence in the presence of defects, a property that is highly sought-after in the optical communications and laser industry.

Critical behavior and magnetic relaxation dynamics of Nd0.4Sr0.6MnO3 nanoparticles

Detailed dc and ac magnetic properties of chemically synthesized Nd0.4Sr0.6MnO3 with different particle size (down to 27 nm) have been studied in details. We have found ferromagnetic state in the nanoparticles, whereas, the bulk Nd0.4Sr0.6MnO3 is known to be an A-type antiferromagnet. A Griffiths-like phase has also been identified in the nanoparticles. Further, critical behavior of the nanoparticles has been studied around the second order ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition region (|(T-TC)/TC|£ 0.04) in terms of modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot and critical isotherm analysis. The estimated critical exponents (b,g,d) are quite different from those predicted according to three-dimensional mean-field, Heisenberg and Ising models. This signifies a quite unusual nature of the size-induced ferromagnetic state in Nd0.4Sr0.6MnO3. The nanoparticles are found to be interacting and do not behave like ideal superparamagnet. Interestingly, we find spin glass like slow relaxation of magnetization, aging and memory effect in the nanometric samples. These phenomena have been attributed to very broad distribution of relaxation time as well as to inter-particle interaction. Experimentally, we have found out that the dynamics of the nanoparticle systems can be best described by hierarchical model of spin glasses.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies of transition-metal-co-doped ZnO nano-particles

We report on x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the paramagnetic (Mn,Co)-co-doped ZnO and ferromagnetic (Fe,Co)-co-doped ZnO nano-particles. Both the surface-sensitive total-electron-yield mode and the bulk-sensitive total-fluorescence-yield mode have been employed to extract the valence and spin states of the surface and inner core regions of the nano-particles. XAS spectra reveal that significant part of the doped Mn and Co atoms are found in the trivalent and tetravalent state in particular in the surface region while majority of Fe atoms are found in the trivalent state both in the inner core region and surface region. The XMCD spectra show that the Fe$^{3+}$ ions in the surface region give rise to the ferromagnetism while both the Co and Mn ions in the surface region show only paramagnetic behaviors. The transition-metal atoms in the inner core region do not show magnetic signals, meaning that they are antiferromagnetically coupled. The present result combined with the previous results on transition-metal-doped ZnO nano-particles and nano-wires suggest that doped holes, probably due to Zn vacancy formation at the surfaces of the nano-particles and nano-wires, rather than doped electrons are involved in the occurrence of ferromagnetism in these systems.

Size-dependent electronic-transport mechanism and sign reversal of magnetoresistance in Nd0.5Sr0.5CoO3

A detailed investigation of electronic-transport properties of Nd0.5Sr0.5CoO3 has been carried out as a function of grain size ranging from micrometer order down to an average size of 28 nm. Interestingly, we observe a size induced metal-insulator transition in the lowest grain size sample while the bulk-like sample is metallic in the whole measured temperature regime. An analysis of the temperature dependent resistivity in the metallic regime reveals that the electron-electron interaction is the dominating mechanism while other processes like electron-magnon and electron-phonon scatterings are also likely to be present. The fascinating observation of enhanced low temperature upturn and minimum in resistivity on reduction of grain size is found due to electron-electron interaction (quantum interference effect). This effect is attributed to enhanced disorder on reduction of grain size. Interestingly, we observed a cross over from positive to negative magnetoresistance in the low temperature regime as the grain size is reduced. This observed sign reversal is attributed to enhanced phase separation on decreasing the grain size of the cobaltite.

Size-Induced Exchange Bias Effect and Griffiths Phase in Electron Doped Sm0.09Ca0.91MnO3 manganites

We report here the magnetic properties of electron-doped Sm1-xCaxMnO3 manganites with the doping level of x=0.91. Exchange bias effect has been observed in Sm0.09Ca0.91MnO3 nanomanagnites system and can be tuned by the strength of cooling magnetic field (Hcool). The values of exchange bias parameter i.e. exchange bias fields (HE), coercivity (HC), remanence asymmetry (ME) and magnetic coercivity (MC) are found to strongly depend on Hcool. The larger effective magnetic moments and deviation of inverse susceptibility (\c{hi}-1) from Curie-Weiss law indicate the possible existence of Griffiths phase (GP). A rigorous measurement of linear and nonlinear ac and dc magnetic susceptibility in nanomanganites proves the existence of Griffiths phase (GP) in the temperature range TC<T<TG (Griffiths temperature). The effect of size reduction on exchange bias effect and GP is addressed here. The enhancement of exchange bias effect and GP has been argued to be due to the modification of the phase separated state on size reduction.

Evidence of electronic phase arrest and glassy ferromagnetic behaviour in (Nd0.4Gd0.3)Sr0.3MnO3 manganite : Comparative study between bulk and nanometric samples

The effect of doping of rare earth Gd 3+ ion replacing Nd 3+ in Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3 is investigated in details. Measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetization, linear and non linear ac magnetic susceptibility on chemically synthesized (Nd0.7-xGdx)Sr0.3MnO3 shows various interesting features with doping level x=0.3. Comparative study has been carried out between a bulk and a nanometric sample (grain size ~ 60 nm) synthesized from the same as prepared powder to maintain identical stoichiometry. Resistivity of the samples shows strong dependence on the magnetic field - temperature history. The magnetoresistance of the samples also show strong irreversibility with respect to sweeping of the field between highest positive and negative values. Moreover, resistivity is found to increase with time after field cooling and then switching off the field. All these phenomena have been attributed to phase separation effect and arrest of phases in the samples. Furthermore, the bulk sample displays a spin glass like behaviour as evident from frequency dependence of linear ac magnetic susceptibility and critical divergence of the nonlinear ac magnetic susceptibility. The experimentally obtained characteristic time t after dynamical scaling analysis of the frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility is found to be t=10-17 s which implies that the system is different from a canonical spin glass. An unusual frequency dependence of the second harmonic of ac susceptibility around the magnetic transition temperature led us to designate the magnetic state of the sample to be glassy ferromagnetic. On reduction of grain size low field magnetoresistance and phase arrest phenomena are found to enhance but the glassy state is observed to be destabilized in the nanometric sample.

Transition from a ferromagnetic insulating to a ferromagnetic metallic state in nanoparticles of Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3 : Study of the electronic - and magneto - transport properties

A detailed investigation of the electronic - and magneto - transport properties of Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3 with the variation of grain size (down to 42 nm) is presented here. Interestingly, we observe that the ferromagnetic insulating state is suppressed and a metallic state is stabilized as the grain size of the sample is reduced. As a result, metal insulator transition is observed in this low doped manganite which is insulating in nature in its bulk form. Destabilization of polaronic order in the ferromagnetic insulating state due to enhanced surface disorder on grain size reduction has been attributed to this effect. A phenomenological model has been proposed to represent the concept of destabilization of polaron formation in the surface region of the nano grains. Resistivity and magnetoresistance data have been carefully analyzed employing different suitable models. Electrical third harmonic resistance has been measured to directly probe the electrical nonlinearity in the samples.

Emergence Of Ferromagnetism In Nanoparticles Of Antiferromagnetic Nd0.4Sr0.6MnO3

We have investigated the magnetic state of Nd0.4Sr0.6MnO3 with the variation of its grain size down to average nanometric diameter (40 nm). The bulk sample is antiferromagnetic (AFM) in nature. However, on reduction of the grain size, emergence of ferromagnetic behavior is experimentally observed. Linear and nonlinear ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that ferromagnetic nature is enhanced as the grain size is reduced. Large coercivity and bifurcation between zero field cooled and field cooled magnetization curves indicate an intrinsic disorder and large anisotropy in the system. Observed behaviors are attributed to surface disorder as well as to possible pressure effect on nano grains.

Probing the magnetic state by linear and non linear ac magnetic susceptibility measurements in under doped manganite Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3

We have thoroughly investigated the entire magnetic states of under doped ferromagnetic insulating manganite Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3 through temperature dependent linear and non linear complex ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. This ferromagnetic insulating manganite is found to have frequency independent ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature at around 140 K. At around 90 K (\approx T_f) the sample shows a second frequency dependent re - entrant magnetic transition as explored through complex ac susceptibility measurements. Non linear ac susceptibility measurements (higher harmonics of ac susceptibility) have also been performed (with and without the superposition of a dc magnetic field) to further investigate the origin of this frequency dependence (dynamic behavior at this re-entrant magnetic transition). Divergence of 3rd order susceptibility in the limit of zero exciting field indicates a spin glass like freezing phenomena. However, large value of spin relaxation time (?0= 10-8 s) and small value of coercivity (~22 Oe) obtained at low temperature (below T_f) from critical slowing down model and dc magnetic measurements, respectively, are in contrast with what generally observed in a canonical spin glass (?0 = 10-12 - 10-14 s and very large value of coercivity below freezing temperature). We have attributed our observation to the formation of finite size ferromagnetic clusters which are formed as consequence of intrinsic separation and undergo cluster glass like freezing below certain temperature in this under doped manganite. The results are supported by the electronic - and magneto - transport data.

On the question of metallicity and ferromagnetism in charge ordered insulating Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 nanoparticles

The fascinating phenomenon of destabilization of charge/orbital order in Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 with the reduction of grain size is critically investigated. Based on our magnetic and transport experiments followed by a theoretical analysis, we analyze various possible mechanisms and try to delineate a universal scenario behind this phenomenon. We, revisit this issue and discuss the overwhelming evidence from experiments on nano and bulk manganites as well as the absence of correlation between size reduction and pressure effects on manganites. We propose a phenomenological understanding on the basis of enhanced surface disorder to explain the appearance of weak ferromagnetism and metallicity in nanoparticles of Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3. We also provide supportive evidence from an ab-initio electron structure calculation and a recent numerical simulation and argue that the mechanism is universal in all nanosize charge ordered manganites.

Electronic structure and magnetism of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Fe-doped ZnO nano-particles

We have studied the electronic structure of Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature, by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental and cluster-model calculation results, we find that Fe atoms are predominantly in the Fe$^{3+}$ ionic state with mixture of a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ and that Fe$^{3+}$ ions are dominant in the surface region of the nano-particles. It is shown that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles is primarily originated from the antiferromagnetic coupling between unequal amounts of Fe$^{3+}$ ions occupying two sets of nonequivalent positions in the region of the XMCD probing depth of $\sim$ 2-3 nm.

Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectroscopy in epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films

Magneto optic measurements are a very powerful tool for investigating the polarization of a conduction band as a function of temperature and are used here to study the polarization of the mobile electrons in 50nm LSMO (x=0.3) strained thin films grown epitaxially on single crystalline (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) and (001) lattice matched substrate (LSAT). The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has been investigated in magnetic fields up to 0.5 T and over a temperature range (10 to 450 K). The MCD spectra of both the films show a peak at the band gap at around 3 eV and the peak is found to be shifted towards lower energy side with the increase of temperature. A separate polaron peak (well known in insulating samples) appears at lower energy (about 1.8 eV) with the increase of temperature in all these metallic films. The rapid decrease in conduction band polarization in the film on LAO has strong implications for the use of these manganites in room temperature spintronics.

Enhanced grain surface effect on magnetic properties of nanometric La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 manganite : Evidence of surface spin freezing of manganite nanoparticles

We have investigated the effect of nanometric grain size on magnetic properties of single phase, nanocrystalline, granular La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) sample. We have considered core-shell structure of our LCMO nanoparticles, which can explain its magnetic properties. From the temperature dependence of field cooled (FC) and zero-field cooled (ZFC) dc magnetization (DCM), the magnetic properties could be distinguished into two regimes: a relatively high temperature regime T > 40 K where the broad maximum of ZFC curve (at T = Tmax) is associated with the blocking of core particle moments, whereas the sharp maximum (at T = TS) is related to the freezing of surface (shell) spins. The unusual shape of M (H) loop at T = 1.5 K, temperature dependent feature of coercive field and remanent magnetization give a strong support of surface spin freezing that are occurring at lower temperature regime (T < 40 K) in this LCMO nanoparticles. Additionally, waiting time (tw) dependence of ZFC relaxation measurements at T = 50 K show weak dependence of relaxation rate [S(t)] on tw and dM/dln(t) following a logarithmic variation on time. Both of these features strongly support the high temperature regime to be associated with the blocking of core moments. At T = 20 K, ZFC relaxation measurements indicates the existence of two different types of relaxation processes in the sample with S(t) attaining a maximum at the elapsed time very close to the wait time tw = 1000 sec, which is an unequivocal sign of glassy behavior. This age-dependent effect convincingly establish the surface spin freezing of our LCMO nanoparticles associated with a background of superparamagnetic (SPM) phase of core moments.

Effect of substrate-induced strain on transport and magnetic properties of epitaxial La_0.66Sr_0.33MnO_3 thin films

We have studied electrical transport and magnetic properties of epitaxial La_0.66 Sr_0.33 Mn O_3 thin films grown on different substrates having different lattice strains induced by different film-substrate lattice-mismatch. Both electrical transport and magnetic properties exhibit strong correlation with Jahn-Teller strain. Our study shows a sufficiently large Jahn-Teller strain giving rise to distinct semi-conducting/insulating state in LSMO thin films even below the respective para-ferromagnetic Curie temperatutes Tc, which is in contradiction with the established phase diagram of Sr-doped manganites. We have presented a microscopic model for the analysis of our data instead of the usual expansion around the undistorted state generally in use in the literature. The model incorporates the two relevant e_g orbitals (and their ordering thereof) and the effect of both Jahn-Teller and bulk strain on the transition temperature via double exchange.

Ferromagnetism in Fe-doped ZnO Nanocrystals: Experimental and Theoretical investigations

Fe-doped ZnO nanocrystals are successfully synthesized and structurally characterized by using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetization measurements on the same system reveal a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature > 450 K with a low-temperature transition from ferromagnetic to spin-glass state due to canting of the disordered surface spins in the nanoparticle system. Local magnetic probes like EPR and Mossbauer indicate the presence of Fe in both valence states Fe2+ and Fe3+. We argue that the presence of Fe3+ is due to the possible hole doping in the system by cation (Zn) vacancies. In a successive ab-initio electronic structure calculation, the effects of defects (e.g. O- and Zn-vacancy) on the nature and origin of ferromagnetism are investigated for Fe-doped ZnO system. Electronic structure calculations suggest hole doping (Zn-vacancy) to be more effective to stabilize ferromagnetism in Fe doped ZnO and our results are consistent with the experimental signature of hole doping in the ferromagnetic Fe doped ZnO samples.

Direct evidence of random field effect on magnetic ordering of La_(0.5)Gd_(0.2)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3) manganite system

We report direct experimental evidence of the effect of quenched random field on magnetic ordering of La_(0.5)Gd_(0.2)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3) manganites system. We demonstrate magnetic measurements providing serious evidence to support that quenched random field of Gd divides the system in finite size clusters which undergo cluster-glass like freezing. The size or concentration of these clusters is found to be closely related to the effect of random field, which in turn is a function of applied field.
