Dynamical overlap fermions in the epsilon-regime

We report on the two-flavor QCD simulation in the epsilon-regime using the overlap fermion formulation. Sea quark mass is reduced to ~ 2 MeV on a 16^3x32 lattice with the lattice spacing ~ 0.11fm. Topological charge is fixed at Q=0. We compare the eigenvalue distribution of the overlap-Dirac operator with the prediction of the chiral random matrix theory. Preliminary results on meson correlators are also reported.

Dynamical overlap fermion at fixed topology

We launched a project to perform dymanical fermion simulations using the overlap fermion formulation for sea quarks. In order to avoid the appearace of near-zero modes of the hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator $H_W$, we introduce a pair of extra Wilson fermions with a large negative mass term. Crossing of the topological boundary is then strictly prohibited, and the topological charge is conserved during simulations. It makes the simulations substantially faster compared to the algorithms which allow the topology change. We discuss on the finite volume effects due to the fixed global topology.

Nonperturbative $O(a)$ improvement of the Wilson quark action with the RG-improved gauge action using the Schrödinger functional method

We perform a nonperturbative determination of the $O(a)$-improvement coefficient $c_{\rm SW}$ and the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$ for $N_f$=3, 2, 0 flavor QCD with the RG-improved gauge action using the Schrödinger functional method. In order to interpolate $c_{\rm SW}$ and $κ_c$ as a function of the bare coupling, a wide range of $β$ from the weak coupling region to the moderately strong coupling points used in large-scale simulations is studied. Corrections at finite lattice size of $O(a/L)$ turned out to be large for the RG-improved gauge action, and hence we make the determination at a size fixed in physical units using a modified improvement condition. This enables us to avoid $O(a)$ scaling violations which would remain in physical observables if $c_{\rm SW}$ determined for a fixed lattice size $L/a$ is used in numerical simulations.

GRACE at ONE-LOOP: Automatic calculation of 1-loop diagrams in the electroweak theory with gauge parameter independence checks

We describe the main building blocks of a generic automated package for the calculation of Feynman diagrams. These blocks include the generation and creation of a model file, the graph generation, the symbolic calculation at an intermediate level of the Dirac and tensor algebra, implementation of the loop integrals, the generation of the matrix elements or helicity amplitudes, methods for the phase space integrations and eventually the event generation. The report focuses on the fully automated systems for the calculation of physical processes based on the experience in developing GRACE-loop. As such, a detailed description of the renormalisation procedure in the Standard Model is given emphasizing the central role played by the non-linear gauge fixing conditions for the construction of such automated codes. The need for such gauges is better appreciated when it comes to devising efficient and powerful algorithms for the reduction of the tensorial structures of the loop integrals. A new technique for these reduction algorithms is described. Explicit formulae for all two-point functions in a generalised non-linear gauge are given, together with the complete set of counterterms. We also show how infrared divergences are dealt with in the system. We give a comprehensive presentation of some systematic test-runs which have been performed at the one-loop level for a wide variety of two-to-two processes to show the validity of the gauge check. These cover fermion-fermion scattering, gauge boson scattering into fermions, gauge bosons and Higgs bosons scattering processes. Comparisons with existing results on some one-loop computation in the Standard Model show excellent agreement. We also briefly recount some recent development concerning the calculation of mutli-leg one-loop corrections.

Les Houches Physics at TeV Colliders 2005, Standard Model and Higgs working group: Summary report

This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Finally, the fourth part deals with the use of Monte Carlos for simulation of LHC physics.

GR@PPA 2.7 event generator for $pp$/$p\bar{p}$ collisions

The GR@PPA event generator has been updated to version 2.7. This distribution provides event generators for $V$ ($W$ or $Z$) + jets ($\leq$ 4 jets), $VV$ + jets ($\leq$ 2 jets) and QCD multi-jet ($\leq$ 4 jets) production processes at $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ collisions, in addition to the four bottom quark productions implemented in our previous work (GR@PPA\_4b). Also included are the top-pair and top-pair + jet production processes, where the correlation between the decay products are fully reproduced at the tree level. Namely, processes up to seven-body productions can be simulated, based on ordinary Feynman diagram calculations at the tree level. In this version, the GR@PPA framework and the process dependent matrix-element routines are separately provided. This makes it easier to add further new processes, and allows users to make a choice of processes to implement. This version also has several new features to handle complicated multi-body production processes. A systematic way to combine many subprocesses to a single base-subprocess has been introduced, and a new method has been adopted to calculate the color factors of complicated QCD processes. They speed up the calculation significantly.

K_l3 form factor with two-flavors of dynamical domain-wall quarks

We report on our calculation of K \to πvector form factor by numerical simulations of two-flavor QCD on a 16^3x32x12 lattice at a \simeq 0.12 fm using domain-wall quarks and DBW2 glue. Our preliminary result at a single sea quark mass correponding to m_PS/m_V \simeq 0.53 shows a good agreement with previous estimate in quenched QCD and that from a phenomenological model.

Pion form factors in two-flavor QCD

We present a calculation of pion electromagnetic and scalar form factors in two-flavor QCD with the non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermion. Chiral extrapolation of the corresponding charge radius is discussed based on the chiral perturbation theory.

Electroweak Corrections for the Study of the Higgs Potential at the LC

The full electroweak radiative correction is calculated for the process ee--> nunubarHH which is a window for the study of the Higgs potential at the future linear collider. The calculation is done by using GRACE, the automated system for the calculation of Feynman diagrams. The magnitude of the weak correction in the G-mu scheme is small in the high energy region where this process dominates over the ZHH production.

Kaon semileptonic decay form factors in two-flavor QCD

We present a calculation of the kaon form factors in two-flavor QCD with the non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. In order to achieve a few percent accuracy in the study of SU(3) breaking effects, we use a set of double ratios of the matrix elements, with which the bulk of the statistical fluctuation and the multiplicative renormalization factors cancel.

Light hadron spectrum and quark masses in 2+1 flavor QCD

CP-PACS and JLQCD collaborations are carrying out a joint project of the 2+1 flavor full QCD simulation. Gauge configurations are generated for the non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action and the Iwasaki gauge action using PHMC algorithm at three lattice spacings, $a\sim 0.076$, 0.010 and 0.122 fm, with a fixed physical volume $(2.0 fm)^3$. We present analysis for the light meson spectrum and quark masses in the continuum limit, which are determined using data obtained from the simulations at the two coarser lattices. Our simulations reproduce experimental values of meson masses. The ud and strange quark masses turn out to be $m_{ud}^{\bar{MS}}(μ=2 GeV)=3.34(23) MeV$ and $m_s^{\bar{MS}}(μ=2 GeV)=86.7(5.9) MeV$. We also show preliminary results at our finest lattice spacing for which simulations are still being continued.

High-significance Sunyaev-Zel'dovich measurement: Abell 1914 seen with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager

We report the first detection of a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (S-Z) decrement with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI). We have made commissioning observations towards the cluster A1914 and have measured an integrated flux density of -8.61 mJy in a uv-tapered map with noise level 0.19 mJy/beam. We find that the spectrum of the decrement, measured in the six channels between 13.5-18GHz, is consistent with that expected for a S-Z effect. The sensitivity of the telescope is consistent with the figures used in our simulations of cluster surveys with AMI.

Non-perturbative O(a)-improvement of Wilson quark action in three-flavor QCD with plaquette gauge action

We perform a non-perturbative determination of the O(a)-improvement coefficient c_SW for the Wilson quark action in three-flavor QCD with the plaquette gauge action. Numerical simulations are carried out in a range of β=12.0-5.2 on a single lattice size of 8^3x16 employing the Schrödinger functional setup of lattice QCD. As our main result, we obtain an interpolation formula for c_SW and the critical hopping parameter K_c as a function of the bare coupling. This enables us to remove O(a) scaling violation from physical observables in future numerical simulation in the wide range of β. Our analysis with a perturbatively modified improvement condition for c_SW suggests that finite volume effects in c_SW are not large on the 8^3x16 lattice. We investigate N_f dependence of c_SW by additional simulations for N_f=4, 2 and 0 at β=9.6. As a preparatory step for this study, we also determine c_SW in two-flavor QCD at β=5.2. At this β, several groups carried out large-scale calculations of the hadron spectrum, while no systematic determination of c_SW has been performed.

I=2 Pion Scattering Length from Two-Pion Wave Functions

We calculate the two-pion wave function in the ground state of the I=2 $S$-wave system and find the interaction range between two pions, which allows us to examine the validity of the necessary condition for the finite-volume method for the scattering length proposed by Lüscher. We work in the quenched approximation employing a renormalization group improved gauge action for gluons and an improved Wilson action for quarks at $1/a=1.207(12) {\rm GeV}$ on $16^3 \times 80$, $20^3 \times 80$ and $24^3 \times 80$ lattices. We conclude that the necessary condition is satisfied within the statistical errors for the lattice sizes $L\ge 24$ ($3.92 {\rm fm}$) when the quark mass is in the range that corresponds to $m_π^2 = 0.273-0.736 {\rm GeV}^2$. We obtain the scattering length with a smaller statistical error from the wave function than from the two-pion time correlator.

Numerical Contour Integration for Loop Integrals

A fully numerical method to calculate loop integrals, a numerical contour-integration method, is proposed. Loop integrals can be interpreted as a contour integral in a complex plane for an integrand with multi-poles in the plane. Stable and efficient numerical integrations an along appropriate contour can be performed for tensor integrals as well as for scalar ones appearing in loop calculations of the standard model. Examples of 3- and 4-point diagrams in 1-loop integrals and 2- and 3-point diagrams in 2-loop integrals with arbitrary masses are shown. Moreover it is shown that numerical evaluations of the Hypergeometric function, which often appears in the loop integrals, can be performed using the numerical contour-integration method.

Light hadron spectrum in 2+1 flavor full QCD by CP-PACS and JLQCD Collaborations

CP-PACS and JLQCD Collaborations are carrying out a joint project of the 2+1 flavor full QCD with the RG-improved gauge action and the non-perturbatively ${\cal O}(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. This simulation removes quenching effects of all three light quarks, which is the last major uncertainty in lattice QCD. In this report we present our results for the light meson spectrum and quark masses on a $20^3\times 40$ lattice at the lattice spacing $a\simeq 0.10$ fm.

A scaling study of the step scaling function of quenched QCD with improved gauge actions

We study the scaling behavior of the step scaling function for SU(3) gauge theory, employing the Iwasaki gauge action and the Luescher-Weisz gauge action. In particular, we test the choice of boundary counter terms and apply a perturbative procedure for removal of lattice artifacts for the simulation results in the extrapolation procedure. We confirm the universality of the step scaling functions at both weak and strong coupling regions. We also measure the low energy scale ratio with the Iwasaki action, and confirm its universality.

Charmed meson spectra and decay constants with one-loop $O(a)$ improved relativistic heavy quark action

We calculate charmed meson spectra and decay constants in lattice QCD employing one-loop $O(a)$ improved heavy quark action and axial-vector currents. In quenched simulations at $a \sim 0.1$ fm with the plaquette gauge action as well as a renormalization-group improved one, it is shown that the deviation from the continuum dispersion relation and the violation of space-time symmetry for the pseudoscalar meson decay constants are substantially reduced, once the $O(a)$ improvement is applied. Preliminary results with two flavors of dynamical quarks are also presented.
