Laser-Induced Transient Magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 Throughout the Brillouin Zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, and that they persist for several picoseconds which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Formation of buried domain walls in the ultrafast transition of SmTe$_3$

We study ultrafast x-ray diffraction on the charge density wave (CDW) of SmTe$_3$ using an x-ray free electron laser. The CDW peaks show that photoexcitation with near-infrared pump centered at 800 nm generates domain walls of the order parameter propagating perpendicular to the sample surface. These domain walls break the CDW long range order and suppress the diffraction intensity of the CDW for times much longer than the $\sim 1$~ps recovery of the local electronic gap. We reconstruct the spatial and temporal dependence of the order parameter using a simple Ginzburg-Landau model and find good agreement between the experimental and model fluence dependences. Based on the model we find that at long times, depending on the pump fluence, multiple domain walls remain at distances of few nm from the surface.

Coherent order parameter dynamics in SmTe$_3$

We present a combined ultrafast optical pump-probe and ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurement of the CDW dynamics in SmTe$_3$ at 300 K. The ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurements, taken at the Linac Coherent Light Source reveal a $\sim 1.55$ THz mode that becomes overdamped with increasing fluence. We identify this oscillation with the lattice component of the amplitude mode. Furthermore, these data allow for a more clear identification of the frequencies present in the optical pump-probe data. In both, reflectivity and diffraction, we observe a crossover of the response from linear (for small displacements) to quadratic in the amplitude of the order parameter displacement. Finally, a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model captures the essential features of the experimental observations.

Ultrafast energy and momentum resolved dynamics of magnetic correlations in photo-doped Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoexcitation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-doping the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane Néel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. The dramatic difference in these two timescales, implies that characterizing the dimensionality of magnetic correlations will be vital in our efforts to understand ultrafast magnetic dynamics.

Coherent Acoustic Perturbation of Second-Harmonic-Generation in NiO

We investigate the structural and magnetic origins of the unusual ultrafast second-harmonicgeneration (SHG) response of femtosecond-laser-excited nickel oxide (NiO) previously attributed to oscillatory reorientation dynamics of the magnetic structure induced by d-d excitations. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction from the (3/2 3/2 3/2) magnetic planes, we show that changes in the magnitude of the magnetic structure factor following ultrafast optical excitation are limited to $Δ / $ = 1.5% in the first 30 ps. An extended investigation of the ultrafast SHG response reveals a strong dependence on wavelength as well as characteristic echoes, both of which give evidence for an acoustic origin of the dynamics. We therefore propose an alternative mechanism for the SHG response based on perturbations of the nonlinear susceptibility via optically induced strain in a spatially confined medium. In this model, the two observed oscillation periods can be understood as the times required for an acoustic strain wave to traverse one coherence length of the SHG process in either the collinear or anti-collinear geometries.

Experimental Test of Momentum Cooling Model Predictions at COSY and Conclusions for WASA and HESR

The High-Energy Storage Ring (HESR) of the future International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt is planned as an anti-proton cooler ring in the momentum range from 1.5 to 15 GeV/c. An important and challenging feature of the new facility is the combination of highly dense phase space cooled beams with internal targets. A detailed numerical and analytical approach to the Fokker-Planck equation for longitudinal filter cooling including the beam - target interaction has been carried out to demonstrate the stochastic cooling capability. To gain confidence in the model predictions a series of experimental stochastic cooling studies with the internal target ANKE at COSY have been carried out. A remarkable agreement between model and experiment was achieved. On this basis longitudinal stochastic cooling simulations were performed to predict the possibilities and limits of cooling when the newly installed WASA Pellet-target is operated.

A search for deeply bound kaonic nuclear states

We have measured proton and neutron energy spectra by stopping negative kaons on liquid helium4. Two distinct peak structures were found on both spectra, which were assigned to the formation of new kinds of strange stribaryons. In this paper, we summarize both results.

Indication of a strange tribaryon S^+ from the ^4He(stopped K^-,n) reaction

We measured the neutron time-of-flight spectrum in the ^4He(stopped K^-, n) reaction by stopping negative kaons in a superfluid helium target. A clear enhancement was observed in the neutron spectrum, which indicates the formation of a strange tribaryon of charge +1 with a mass and width of M = 3141 +/- 3 (stat.) +4/-1 (sys.) MeV/c^2 and G < 23 MeV/c^2. This state, denoted as S^+(3140), is about 25 MeV/c^2 higher than the previously observed S^0(3115) T=1.

The Data Acquisition System Based on PMC Bus

High energy physics experiments in KEK/Japan rush into over KHz trigger stage. Thus, we need a successor of the data acquisition(DAQ) system that replaces the CAMAC or FASTBUS systems. To meet these needs, we have developed a DAQ system which includes a crate, base-board modules, daughter cards for front-end A/D or T/D conversion, and back-end communication cards for data transfer and timing control. The size of the crate is for the 9U Euro-cards with the standard VME32 bus and extension connectors for power supply. The base-board comprises of a local bus with the sequencer connected to the front-end daughter cards via event buffering FIFOs, and the standard PMC (PCI mezzanine card) bus to be set a PMC processor unit to reduce data size from the front-end daughter cards. A data transfer module, which is connected to the event building system, and a trigger control unit, which communicates with the central timing controller are installed on the back-end communication card connected to the rear end of the base-board. We describe the design of this DAQ system and evaluate the performance of it.

Development of a PCI Based Data Acquisition Platform for High Intensity Accelerator Experiments

Data logging at an upgraded KEKB accelerator or the J-PARC facility, currently under commission, requires a high density data acquisition platform with integrated data reduction CPUs. To follow market trends, we have developed a DAQ platform based on the PCI bus, a choice which permits a fast DAQ and a long expected lifetime of the system. The platform is a 9U-VME motherboard consisting of four slots for signal digitization modules, readout FIFOs for data buffering, and three PMC slots, on one of which resides a data reduction CPU. We have performed long term and thermal stability tests. The readout speed on the platform has been measured up to 125 MB/s in DMA mode.
