TARGET: toward a solution for the readout electronics of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

TARGET is an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to read out signals recorded by the photosensors in cameras of very-high-energy gamma-ray telescopes exploiting the imaging of Cherenkov radiation from atmospheric showers. TARGET capabilities include sampling at a high rate (typically 1 GSample/s), digitization, and triggering on the sum of four adjacent pixels. The small size, large number of channels read out per ASIC (16), low cost per channel, and deep buffer for trigger latency (~16 $μ$s at 1 GSample/s) make TARGET ideally suited for the readout in systems with a large number of telescopes instrumented with compact photosensors like multi-anode or silicon photomultipliers combined with dual-mirror optics. The possible advantages of such systems are better sensitivity, a larger field of view, and improved angular resolution. The two latest generations of TARGET ASICs, TARGET 5 and TARGET 7, are soon to be used for the first time in two prototypes of small-sized and medium-sized dual-mirror telescopes proposed in the framework of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project. In this contribution we report on the performance of the TARGET ASICs and discuss future developments.

Magneto-hydrodynamic Simulations of a Jet Drilling an HI Cloud: Shock Induced Formation of Molecular Clouds and Jet Breakup

The formation mechanism of the jet-aligned CO clouds found by NANTEN CO observations is studied by magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations taking into account the cooling of the interstellar medium. Motivated by the association of the CO clouds with the enhancement of HI gas density, we carried out MHD simulations of the propagation of a supersonic jet injected into the dense HI gas. We found that the HI gas compressed by the bow shock ahead of the jet is cooled down by growth of the cooling instability triggered by the density enhancement. As a result, cold dense sheath is formed around the interface between the jet and the HI gas. The radial speed of the cold, dense gas in the sheath is a few km/s almost independent of the jet speed. Molecular clouds can be formed in this region. Since the dense sheath wrapping the jet reflects waves generated in the cocoon, the jet is strongly perturbed by the vortices of the warm gas in the cocoon, which breaks up the jet and forms a secondary shock in the HI-cavity drilled by the jet. The particle acceleration at the shock can be the origin of radio and X-ray filaments observed near the eastern edge of W50 nebula surrounding the galactic jet source SS433.

High pressure high temperature (HPHT) synthesis and magnetization of Magneto-Superconducting RuSr2(LnCe2)Cu2O12.25 (Ru-1232) compounds (Ln = Y and Dy)

RuSr2(LnCe2)Cu2O12.25 (Ru-1232) compounds with Ln = Y and Dy being synthesized by high pressure high temperature (6GPa, 12000C) solid state synthesis route do crystallize in space group P4/mmm in near single phase form with small quantities of SrRuO3 and RuSr2(RE1.5Ce0.5)Cu2O10 (Ru-1222). Both samples exhibit magnetic transitions (Tmag.) at ~90 K with significant branching of zfc (zero-field-cooled) and fc (field-cooled) magnetization and a sharp cusp in zfc at ~ 70 K, followed by superconducting transitions at ~ 30 K. Both compounds show typical ferromagnetic hysteresis loops in magnetic moment (M) versus field (H) magnetization right upto Tmag. i.e. < 90K. To our knowledge these are the first successfully synthesized Ru-1232 compounds in near single phase with lanthanides including Y and Dy. The results are compared with widely reported Gd/Ru-1222 and Ru-1212 (RuSr2GdCu2O8) compounds. In particular, it seems that the Ru moments magnetic ordering temperature (Tmag.) scales with the c-direction distance between magnetic RuO6 octahedras in Ru-1212/1222 or 1232 systems.

Possible phase separated bulk superconductivity in Ru0.9Sr2YCu2.1O7.9

The Ru0.9Sr2YCu2.1O7.9 sample being synthesized by high-pressure high-temperature solid-state reaction underwent (weak) ferromagnetic transition at 150 K followed by superconducting transition at 30 K. It showed clear Meissner signal in the field-cooled process up to external magnetic field of a few hundred Oe (~300 Oe). The magnetic susceptibility data and magnetic hysteresis data could be explained assuming that the sample was a macroscopic mixture of a superconductor and a (weak) ferromagnet. Any anomalous behaviour implying the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism on a microscopic scale was not observed.
