TOI-1468: A system of two transiting planets, a super-Earth and a mini-Neptune, on opposite sides of the radius valley

We report the discovery and characterization of two small transiting planets orbiting the bright M3.0V star TOI-1468 (LSPM J0106+1913), whose transit signals were detected in the photometric time series in three sectors of the TESS mission. We confirm the e planetary nature of both of them using precise radial velocity measurements from the CARMENES and MAROON-X spectrographs, and supplement them with ground-based transit photometry. A joint analysis of all these data reveals that the shorter-period planet, TOI-1468 b ($P_{\rm b}$ = 1.88 d), has a planetary mass of $M_{\rm b} = 3.21\pm0.24$ $M_{\oplus}$ and a radius of $R_{\rm b} =1.280^{+0.038}_{-0.039} R_{\oplus}$, resulting in a density of $ρ_{\rm b} = 8.39^{+ 1.05}_{- 0.92}$ g cm$^{-3}$, which is consistent with a mostly rocky composition. For the outer planet, TOI-1468 c ($P_{\rm c} = 15.53$ d), we derive a mass of $M_{\rm c} = 6.64^{+ 0.67}_{- 0.68}$ $M_{\oplus}$, a radius of $R_{\rm c} = 2.06\pm0.04\,R_{\oplus}$, and a bulk density of $ρ_{c} = 2.00^{+ 0.21}_{- 0.19}$ g cm$^{-3}$, which corresponds to a rocky core composition with a H/He gas envelope. These planets are located on opposite sides of the radius valley, making our system an interesting discovery as there are only a handful of other systems with the same properties. This discovery can further help determine a more precise location of the radius valley for small planets around M dwarfs and, therefore, shed more light on planet formation and evolution scenarios.

Possible Enhancements of Collective Flow Anisotropy Induced by Uncertainty Relation for Fluid Element

In the stochastic formulation of viscous hydrodynamics, the velocity of a fluid element fluctuates satisfying a similar relation to the quantum-mechanical uncertainty relation. Using a non-relativistic toy model, we show that the presence of such a velocity fluctuation increases the local anisotropy of the momentum distributions of produced hadrons, and thus the collective flow parameters such as $v_2$ is emphasized.

Validation and atmospheric exploration of the sub-Neptune TOI-2136b around a nearby M3 dwarf

The NASA space telescope $TESS$ is currently in the extended mission of its all-sky search for new transiting planets. Of the thousands of candidates that TESS is expected to deliver, transiting planets orbiting nearby M dwarfs are particularly interesting targets since they provide a great opportunity to characterize their atmospheres by transmission spectroscopy. We aim to validate and characterize the new sub-Neptune-sized planet candidate TOI-2136.01 orbiting a nearby M dwarf ($d = 33.36 \pm 0.02$ pc, $T_{eff} = 3373 \pm 108$ K) with an orbital period of 7.852 days. We use TESS data, ground-based multicolor photometry, and radial velocity measurements with the InfraRed Doppler (IRD) instrument on the Subaru Telescope to validate the planetary nature of TOI-2136.01 and estimate the stellar and planetary parameters. We also conduct high-resolution transmission spectroscopy to search for helium in its atmosphere. We confirmed that TOI-2136.01 (now named as TOI-2136b) is a bona fide planet with a planetary radius of $R_p = 2.2 \pm 0.07$ $R_{Earth}$ and a mass of $M_p = 4.7^{+3.1}_{-2.6}$ $M_{Earth}$. We also search for helium 10830 Å absorption lines and place an upper limit on the equivalent width of $<$ 7.8 mÅ and on the absorption signal of $<$ 1.44 % with 95 % confidence. TOI-2136b is a sub-Neptune transiting a nearby and bright star (J=10.8) and is a potentially hycean planet, which is a new class of habitable planets with large oceans under a H$_2$-rich atmosphere, making it an excellent target for atmospheric studies to understand the formation, evolution, and habitability of the small planets.

A hot sub-Neptune in the desert and a temperate super-Earth around faint M dwarfs: Color validation of TOI-4479b and TOI-2081b

We report the discovery and validation of two TESS exoplanets orbiting faint M dwarfs: TOI-4479b and TOI-2081b. We have jointly analyzed space (TESS mission) and ground based (MuSCAT2, MuSCAT3 and SINISTRO instruments) lightcurves using our multi-color photometry transit analysis pipeline. This allowed us to compute contamination limits for both candidates and validate them as planet-sized companions. We found TOI-4479b to be a sub-Neptune-sized planet ($R_{p}=2.82^{+0.65}_{-0.63}~\rm R_{\oplus}$) and TOI-2081b to be a super-Earth-sized planet ($R_{p}=2.04^{+0.50}_{-0.54}~\rm R_{\oplus}$). Furthermore, we obtained that TOI-4479b, with a short orbital period of $1.15890^{+0.00002}_{-0.00001}~\rm days$, lies within the Neptune desert and is in fact the largest nearly ultra-short period planet around an M dwarf known to date. These results make TOI-4479b rare among the currently known exoplanet population around M dwarf stars, and an especially interesting target for spectroscopic follow-up and future studies of planet formation and evolution.

The Onset of a Globally Ice-covered State for a Land Planet

The climates of terrestrial planets with a small amount of water on their surface, called land planets, are significantly different from the climates of planets having a large amount of surface water. Land planets have a higher runaway greenhouse threshold than aqua planets, which extends the inner edge of the habitable zone inward. Land planets also have the advantage of avoiding global freezing due to drier tropics, leading to a lower planetary albedo. In this study, we systematically investigate the complete freezing limit for various surface water distribution using a three-dimensional dynamic atmospheric model. As in a previous study, we found that a land planet climate has dry tropics that result in less snow and fewer clouds. The complete freezing limit decreases from that for aqua planets (92% S0, where S0 is Earth's present insolation) to that for land planets (77% S0) with an increasing dry area. Values for the complete freezing limit for zonally uniform surface water distributions are consistently lower than those for meridionally uniform surface water distribution. This is because the surface water distribution in the tropics in the meridionally uniform cases causes ice-albedo feedback until a planet lapses into the complete freezing state. For a surface water distribution using the topographies of the terrestrial planets, the complete freezing limit has values near those for the meridionally uniform cases. Our results indicate that the water distribution is important for the onset of a global ice-covered state for Earth-like exoplanets.

TOI-1749: an M dwarf with a Trio of Planets including a Near-Resonant Pair

We report the discovery of one super-Earth- (TOI-1749b) and two sub-Neptune-sized planets (TOI-1749c and TOI-1749d) transiting an early M dwarf at a distance of 100~pc, which were first identified as planetary candidates using data from the TESS photometric survey. We have followed up this system from the ground by means of multiband transit photometry, adaptive-optics imaging, and low-resolution spectroscopy, from which we have validated the planetary nature of the candidates. We find that TOI-1749b, c, and d have orbital periods of 2.39, 4.49, and 9.05 days, and radii of 1.4, 2.1, and 2.5 $R_\oplus$, respectively. We also place 95\% confidence upper limits on the masses of 57, 14, and 15 $M_\oplus$ for TOI-1749b, c, and d, respectively, from transit timing variations. The periods, sizes, and tentative masses of these planets are in line with a scenario in which all three planets initially had a hydrogen envelope on top of a rocky core, and only the envelope of the innermost planet has been stripped away by photoevaporation and/or core-powered mass loss mechanisms. These planets are similar to other planetary trios found around M dwarfs, such as TOI-175b,c,d and TOI-270b,c,d, in the sense that the outer pair has a period ratio within 1\% of 2. Such a characteristic orbital configuration, in which an additional planet is located interior to a near 2:1 period-ratio pair, is relatively rare around FGK dwarfs.

Analytical representation for amplitudes and differential cross section of pp elastic scattering at 13 TeV

With analytical representation for the pp scattering amplitudes introduced and tested at lower energies, a description of high precision is given of the $dσ/dt$ data at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV for all values of the momentum transfer, with explicit identification of the real and imaginary parts. In both $t$ and $b$ coordinates the amplitudes have terms identified as of non-perturbative and perturbative nature, with distinction of their influences in forward and large $|t|$ ranges and in central and peripheral regions respectively. In the forward range, the role of the Coulomb-nuclear interference phase is investigated. The energy dependence of the parameters of the amplitudes are reviewed and updated, revealing a possible emergence of a peculiar behavior of elastic and inelastic profiles in b-space for central collisions, which seems to be enhanced quickly at higher energies. Some other models are also briefly discussed in comparison, including the above mentioned behavior in b-space.

COALAS: I. ATCA CO(1-0) survey and luminosity function in the Spiderweb protocluster at z=2.16

We report a detailed CO(1-0) survey of a galaxy protocluster field at $z=2.16$, based on 475 hours of observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We constructed a large mosaic of 13 individual pointings, covering an area of 21 arcmin$^2$ and $\pm6500$ km/s range in velocity. We obtain a robust sample of 46 CO(1-0) detections spanning $z=2.09-2.22$, constituting the largest sample of molecular gas measurements in protoclusters to date. The CO emitters show an overdensity at $z=2.12-2.21$, suggesting a galaxy super-protocluster or a protocluster connected to large-scale filaments with ~120 cMpc size. We find that 90% CO emitters have distances $>0'.5-4'$ to the center galaxy, indicating that small area surveys would miss the majority of gas reservoirs in similar structures. Half of the CO emitters have velocities larger than escape velocities, which appears gravitationally unbound to the cluster core. These unbound sources are barely found within the $R_{200}$ radius around the center, which is consistent with a picture in which the cluster core is collapsed while outer regions are still in formation. Compared to other protoclusters, this structure contains relatively more CO emitters with relatively narrow line width and high luminosity, indicating galaxy mergers. We use these CO emitters to place the first constraint on the CO luminosity function and molecular gas density in an overdense environment. The amplitude of the CO luminosity function is 1.6$\pm$0.5 orders of magnitudes higher than observed for field galaxy samples at $z\sim2$, and one order of magnitude higher than predictions for galaxy protoclusters from semi-analytical SHARK models. We derive a high molecular gas density of $0.6-1.3\times10^{9}$ $M_\odot$ cMpc$^{-3}$ for this structure, consistent with predictions for cold gas density of massive structures from hydro-dynamical DIANOGA simulations.

Time-Domain Hybrid PAM for Data-Rate and Distance Adaptive UWOC System

The challenge for next-generation underwater optical wireless communication systems is to develop optical transceivers that can operate with low power consumption by maximizing the transmission capacity according to the transmission distance between transmitters and receivers. This study proposes an underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using an optical transceiver with an optimum transmission rate for the deep sea with near-pure water properties. As a method for actualizing an optical transceiver with an optimum transmission rate in a UWOC system, time-domain hybrid pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) (TDHP) using a transmission rate and distance-adaptive intensity modulation/direct detection optical transceiver is considered. In the TDHP method, variable transmission capacity is actualized while changing the generation ratio of two intensity-modulated signals with different noise immunities in the time domain. Three different color laser diodes (LDs), red, blue, and green are used in an underwater channel transmission transceiver that comprises the LD and a photodiode. The maximum transmission distance while changing the incidence of PAM 2 and PAM 4 signals that calibrate the TDHP in a pure transmission line and how the maximum transmission distance changes when the optical transmitter/receiver spatial optical system is altered from the optimum conditions are clarified based on numerical calculation and simulation. To the best knowledge of the authors, there is no other research on data-rate and distance adaptive UWOC system that applies the TDHP signal with power optimization between two modulation formats.

Uncertainty Relations in Hydrodynamics

The uncertainty relations in hydrodynamics are numerically studied. We first give a review for the formulation of the generalized uncertainty relations in the stochastic variational method (SVM), following the paper by two of the present authors [Phys. Lett. A382, 1472 (2018)]. In this approach, the origin of the finite minimum value of uncertainty is attributed to the non-differentiable (virtual) trajectory of a quantum particle and then both of the Kennard and Robertson-Schrödinger inequalities in quantum mechanics are reproduced. The same non-differentiable trajectory is applied to the motion of fluid elements in hydrodynamics. By introducing the standard deviations of position and momentum for fluid elements, the uncertainty relations in hydrodynamics are derived. These are applicable even to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then the field-theoretical uncertainty relation is reproduced. We further investigate numerically the derived relations and find that the behaviors of the uncertainty relations for liquid and gas are qualitatively different. This suggests that the uncertainty relations in hydrodynamics are used as a criterion to classify liquid and gas in fluid.

ALMA 26 arcmin$^2$ survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO): millimeter properties of stellar mass selected galaxies

We make use of the ASAGAO, deep 1.2 mm continuum observations of a 26 arcmin$^2$ region in the GOODS-South field obtained with ALMA, to probe dust-enshrouded star formation in $K$-band selected (i.e., stellar mass selected) galaxies, which are drawn from the ZFOURGE catalog. Based on the ASAGAO combined map, which was created by combining ASAGAO and ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we find that 24 ZFOURGE sources have 1.2 mm counterparts with a signal-to-noise ratio $>$ 4.5 (1$σ\simeq$ 30 - 70 $μ$Jy beam$^{-1}$ at 1.2 mm). Their median redshift is estimated to be $z_\mathrm{median}=$ 2.38 $\pm$ 0.14. They generally follow the tight relationship of the stellar mass versus star formation rate (i.e., the main sequence of star-forming galaxies). ALMA-detected ZFOURGE sources exhibit systematically larger infrared (IR) excess (IRX $\equiv L_\mathrm{IR}/L_\mathrm{UV}$) compared to ZFOURGE galaxies without ALMA detections even though they have similar redshifts, stellar masses, and star formation rates. This implies the consensus stellar-mass versus IRX relation, which is known to be tight among rest-frame-UV-selected galaxies, can not fully predict the ALMA detectability of stellar-mass-selected galaxies. We find that ALMA-detected ZFOURGE sources are the main contributors to the cosmic IR star formation rate density at $z$ = 2 - 3.

Variational formulation of compressible hydrodynamics in curved spacetime and symmetry of stress tensor

Hydrodynamics of the non-relativistic compressible fluid in the curved spacetime is derived using the generalized framework of the stochastic variational method (SVM) for continuum medium. The fluid-stress tensor of the resultant equation becomes asymmetric for the exchange of the indices, differently from the standard Euclidean one. Its incompressible limit suggests that the viscous term should be represented with the Bochner Laplacian. Moreover the modified Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) equation proposed by Brenner can be considered even in the curved spacetime. To confirm the compatibility with the symmetry principle, SVM is applied to the gauge-invariant Lagrangian of a charged compressible fluid and then the Lorentz force is reproduced as the interaction between the Abelian gauge fields and the viscous charged fluid.

Kinematics of disk galaxies in (proto-)clusters at z=1.5

We observed star-forming galaxies at z~1.5 selected from the HyperSuprimeCam Subaru Strategic Program. The galaxies are part of two significant overdensities of [OII] emitters identified via narrow-band imaging and photometric redshifts from grizy photometry. We used VLT/KMOS to carry out Halpha integral field spectroscopy of 46 galaxies in total. Ionized gas maps, star formation rates and velocity fields were derived from the Halpha emission line. We quantified morphological and kinematical asymmetries to test for potential gravitational (e.g. galaxy-galaxy) or hydrodynamical (e.g. ram-pressure) interactions. Halpha emission was detected in 36 targets. 34 of the galaxies are members of two (proto-)clusters at z=1.47, confirming our selection strategy to be highly efficient. By fitting model velocity fields to the observed ones, we determined the intrinsic maximum rotation velocity Vmax of 14 galaxies. Utilizing the luminosity-velocity (Tully-Fisher) relation, we find that these galaxies are more luminous than their local counterparts of similar mass by up to ~4 mag in the rest-frame B-band. In contrast to field galaxies at z<1, the offsets of the z~1.5 (proto-)cluster galaxies from the local Tully-Fisher relation are not correlated with their star formation rates but with the ratio between Vmax and gas velocity dispersion sigma_g. This probably reflects that, as is observed in the field at similar redshifts, fewer disks have settled to purely rotational kinematics and high Vmax/sigma_g ratios. Due to relatively low galaxy velocity dispersions (sigma_v < 400 km/s) of the (proto-)clusters, gravitational interactions likely are more efficient, resulting in higher kinematical asymmetries, than in present-day clusters. Novel Effect Induced by Spacetime Curvature in Quantum Hydrodynamics

The interplay between quantum fluctuation and spacetime curvature is shown to induce an additional quantum-curvature (QC) term in the energy-momentum tensor of fluid using the generalized framework of the stochastic variational method (SVM). The QC term is necessary to satisfy the momentum conservation but the corresponding quantum hydrodynamics is not necessarily cast into the form of the Schrödinger equation, differently from the case of the Euclidean spacetime. This seems to suggest that the existence of the Hilbert space is not a priori requirement in the quantization of curved spacetime systems. As an example, we apply the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric and show that this effect contributes to the cosmological acceleration although it is too small in the present non-relativistic toy model.

Cluster induced quenching of galaxies in the massive cluster XMMXCSJ2215.9-1738 at z~1.5 traced by enhanced metallicities inside half R200

(Abridged) We explore the massive cluster XMMXCSJ2215.9-1738 at z~1.5 with KMOS spectroscopy of Halpha and [NII] covering a region that corresponds to about one virial radius. Using published spectroscopic redshifts of 108 galaxies in and around the cluster we computed the location of galaxies in the projected velocity vs. position phase-space to separate our cluster sample into a virialized region of objects accreted longer ago (roughly inside half R200) and a region of infalling galaxies. We measured oxygen abundances for ten cluster galaxies with detected [NII] lines in the individual galaxy spectra and compared the MZR of the galaxies inside half R200 with the infalling galaxies and a field sample at similar redshifts. We find that the oxygen abundances of individual z~1.5 star-forming cluster galaxies inside half R200 are comparable, at the respective stellar mass, to the higher local SDSS metallicity values. We find that the [NII]/Halpha line ratios inside half R200 are higher by 0.2 dex and that the resultant metallicities of the galaxies in the inner part of the cluster are higher by about 0.1 dex, at a given mass, than the metallicities of infalling galaxies and of field galaxies at z~1.5. The enhanced metallicities of cluster galaxies at z~1.5 inside half R200 indicate that the density of the ICM in this massive cluster becomes high enough toward the cluster center such that the ram pressure exceeds the restoring pressure of the hot gas reservoir of cluster galaxies. This can remove the gas reservoir initiating quenching; although the galaxies continue to form stars, albeit at slightly lower rates, using the available cold gas in the disk which is not stripped.

AzTEC 1.1 mm observations of high-z protocluster environments: SMG overdensities and misalignment between AGN jets and SMG distribution

We present observations at 1.1 mm towards 16 powerful radio galaxies and a radio-quiet quasar at 0.5<z<6.3 acquired with the AzTEC camera mounted at the JCMT and ASTE to study the spatial distribution of submillimeter galaxies towards possible protocluster regions. The survey covers a total area of 1.01 square degrees with rms depths of 0.52 - 1.44 mJy and detects 728 sources above 3sigma. We find overdensities of a factor of ~2 in the source counts of 3 individual fields (4C+23.56, PKS1138-262 and MRC0355-037) over areas of ~200 sq deg. When combining all fields, the source-count analysis finds an overdensity that reaches a factor $\gtrsim 3$ at S$_{\rm{1.1mm}} \ge 4$ mJy covering a 1.5-arcmin-radius area centred on the AGN. The large size of our maps allows us to establish that beyond a radius of 1.5 arcmin, the radial surface density of SMGs falls to that of a blank field. In addition, we find a trend for SMGs to align closely to a perpendicular direction with respect to the radio jets of the powerful central radio galaxies (73$_{+13}^{-14}$ degrees). This misalignment is found over projected co-moving scales of 4-20 Mpc, departs from perfect alignment (0 deg) by ~5sigma, and apparently has no dependence on SMG luminosity. Under the assumption that the AzTEC sources are at the redshift of the central radio galaxy, the misalignment reported here can be interpreted as SMGs preferentially inhabiting mass-dominant filaments funneling material towards the protoclusters, which are also the parent structures of the radio galaxies.

Generalization of Uncertainty Relation for Quantum and Stochastic Systems

The generalized uncertainty relation applicable to quantum and stochastic systems is derived within the stochastic variational method. This relation not only reproduces the well-known inequality in quantum mechanics but also is applicable to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation, showing that the finite minimum uncertainty between the position and the momentum is not an inherent property of quantum mechanics but a common feature of stochastic systems. We further discuss the possible implication of the present study in discussing the application of the hydrodynamic picture to microscopic systems, like relativistic heavy-ion collisions.
