Development and Quality Control of PMT Modules for the Large-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory

The camera of the Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) consists of 1855 pixels that are grouped into 265 high-performance photomultiplier tube (PMT) modules. Each module comprises a seven-light-guide plate, seven PMT units, a slow control board, and a readout board with a trigger board. %In this paper we describe The requirements for the PMT modules include various aspects, such as photon detection efficiency, dynamic range, buffer depth, and test pulse functionality. We have developed a high-performance PMT module that fulfills all these requirements. Mass-production and quality control (QC) of modules for all four LSTs of the northern CTAO have been completed. Here we report on the technical details of each element of the module and its performance, together with the methods and results of QC measurements.

Detection of current-sheet and bipolar ion flows in a self-generated antiparallel magnetic field of laser-produced plasmas for magnetic reconnection research

Magnetic reconnection in laser-produced magnetized plasma is investigated by using optical diagnostics. The magnetic field is generated via Biermann battery effect, and the inversely directed magnetic field lines interact with each other. It is shown by self-emission measurement that two colliding plasmas stagnate on a mid-plane forming two planar dense regions, and that they interact later in time. Laser Thomson scattering spectra are distorted in the direction of the self-generated magnetic field, indicating asymmetric ion velocity distribution and plasma acceleration. In addition, the spectra perpendicular to the magnetic field show different peak intensity, suggesting an electron current formation. These results are interpreted as magnetic field dissipation, reconnection, and outflow acceleration. Two-directional laser Thomson scattering is, as discussed here, a powerful tool for the investigation of microphysics in the reconnection region.

High-power laser experiment on developing supercritical shock propagating in homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient gas origin

A developing supercritical collisionless shock propagating in a homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient gas origin having higher uniformity than the previous experiments is formed by using high-power laser experiment. The ambient plasma is not contaminated by the plasma produced in the early time after the laser shot. While the observed developing shock does not have stationary downstream structure, it possesses some characteristics of a magnetized supercritical shock, which are supported by a one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation taking the effect of finite time of laser-target interaction into account.

High-power laser experiment forming a supercritical collisionless shock in a magnetized uniform plasma at rest

We present a new experimental method to generate quasi-perpendicular supercritical magnetized collisionless shocks. In our experiment, ambient nitrogen (N) plasma is at rest and well-magnetized, and it has uniform mass density. The plasma is pushed by laser-driven ablation aluminum (Al) plasma. Streaked optical pyrometry and spatially resolved laser collective Thomson scattering clarify structures of plasma density and temperatures, which are compared with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is indicated that just after the laser irradiation, the Al plasma is magnetized by a self-generated Biermann battery field, and the plasma slaps the incident N plasma. The compressed external field in the N plasma reflects N ions, leading to counter-streaming magnetized N flows. Namely we identify the edge of the reflected N ions. Such interacting plasmas form a magnetized collisionless shock.

The new MRTOF mass spectrograph following the ZeroDegree spectrometer at RIKEN's RIBF facility

A newly assembled multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph (MRTOF-MS) at RIKEN's RIBF facility became operational for the first time in spring 2020; further modifications and performance tests using stable ions were completed in early 2021. By using a pulsed-drift-tube technique to modify the ions' kinetic energy in a wide range, we directly characterize the dispersion function of the system for use in a new procedure for optimizing the voltages applied to the electrostatic mirrors. Thus far, a mass resolving power of $R_m > 1\,000\,000$ is reached within a total time-of-flight of only $12.5\,\mathrm{ms}$, making the spectrometer capable of studying short-lived nuclei possessing low-lying isomers. Detailed information about the setup and measurement procedure is reported, and an alternative in-MRTOF ion selection scheme to remove molecular contaminants in the absence of a dedicated deflection device is introduced. The setup underwent an initial on-line commissioning at the BigRIPS facility at the end of 2020, where more than 70 nuclear masses have been measured. A summary of the commissioning experiments and results from a test of mass accuracy will be presented.

Bulk quantum Hall effect of spin-valley-coupled Dirac fermions in a polar antiferromagnet BaMnSb$_2$

Unconventional features of relativistic Dirac/Weyl quasi-particles in topological materials are most evidently manifested in the 2D quantum Hall effect (QHE), whose variety is further enriched by their spin and/or valley polarization. Although its extension to three dimensions has been long-sought and inspired theoretical proposals, material candidates have been lacking. Here we have discovered valley-contrasting spin-polarized Dirac fermions in a multilayer form in bulk antiferromagnet BaMnSb$_2$, where the out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin splitting is induced by the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the distorted Sb square net. Furthermore, we have observed well-defined quantized Hall plateaus together with vanishing interlayer conductivity at low temperatures as a hallmark of the half-integer QHE in a bulk form. The Hall conductance of each layer is found to be nearly quantized to $2(N+1/2)e^2/h$ with $N$ being the Landau index, which is consistent with two spin-polarized Dirac valleys protected by the strong spin-valley coupling.

Rest-frame UV Properties of Luminous Strong Gravitationally Lensed Ly$α$ Emitters from the BELLS GALLERY Survey

We present deep rest-frame UV spectroscopic observations using the Gran Telescopio Canarias of six gravitationally lensed Lya emitters (LAEs) at $2.36<z<2.82$ selected from the BELLS GALLERY survey. By taking the magnifications into account, we show that LAEs can be as luminous as L(Lya) = 30x10$^{42}$ erg s-1 and M(UV) = -23 (AB) without invoking an AGN component, in contrast with previous findings. We measure Lya rest-frame equivalent widths, EW(Lya), ranging from 16Åto 50Åand Lya escape fractions, fesc(Lya), from 10% to 40%. Large EW(Lya) and fesc(Lya) are found predominantly in LAEs showing weak low-ionization ISM absorption (EW < 1Å) and narrow Lya profiles (< 300 km s-1 FWHM) with their peak close (< 80 km s-1) to their systemic redshifts, suggestive of less scatter from low HI column densities that favours the escape of Lya photons. We infer stellar metallicities of Z/Zsun ~ 0.2 in almost all LAEs by comparing the P-Cygni profiles of the wind lines NV1240Åand CIV1549Åwith those from stellar synthesis models. We also find a trend between M(UV) and the velocity offset of ISM absorption lines, such as the most luminous LAEs experience stronger outflows. The most luminous LAEs show star formation rates up to 180 Msun yr-1, yet they appear relatively blue ($β$(UV) ~ -1.8 to -2.0) showing evidence of little dust attenuation (E(B-V) = 0.10-0.14). These luminous LAEs may be particular cases of young starburst galaxies that have had no time to form large amounts of dust. If so, they are ideal laboratories to study the early phase of massive star formation, stellar and dust mass growth, and chemical enrichment histories of starburst galaxies at high-z.

Magnetization reversal, damping properties and magnetic anisotropy of L10-ordered FeNi thin films

L10 ordered magnetic alloys such as FePt, FePd, CoPt and FeNi are well known for their large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Among these, L10-FeNi alloy is economically viable material for magnetic recording media because it does not contain rare earth and noble elements. In this work, L10-FeNi films with three different strengths of anisotropy were fabricated by varying the deposition process in molecular beam epitaxy system. We have investigated the magnetization reversal along with domain imaging via magneto optic Kerr effect based microscope. It is found that in all three samples, the magnetization reversal is happening via domain wall motion. Further ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy was performed to evaluate the damping constant and magnetic anisotropy. It was observed that the FeNi sample with moderate strength of anisotropy exhibits low value of damping constant ~ 4.9X10^-3. In addition to this, it was found that the films possess a mixture of cubic and uniaxial anisotropies.

The Hyper Suprime-Cam SSP Survey: Overview and Survey Design

Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii. A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg$^2$ in five broad bands ($grizy$), with a $5\,σ$ point-source depth of $r \approx 26$. The Deep layer covers a total of 26~deg$^2$ in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg$^2$). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early phases of this survey.

Form factors of the half-infinite XXZ spin chain with a triangular boundary

The half-infinite XXZ spin chain with a triangular boundary is considered in the massive regime. Two integral representations of form factors of local operators are proposed using bosonization. Sufficient conditions such that the expressions for triangular boundary conditions coincide with those for diagonal boundary conditions are identified. The expressions are compared with known results upon specializations.Using the spin-reversal property which relates the Hamiltonian with upper and lower triangular boundary conditions, new identities between multiple integrals of infinite products are extracted.

The integrals of motion for the elliptic deformation of the Virasoro and $W_N$ algebra

We review the free field realization of the deformed Virasoro algebra $Vir_{q,t}$ and the deformed $W$ algebra $W_{q,t}(\hat{gl_N})$. We explicitly construct two classes of infinitly many commutative operators ${\cal I}_m$, ${\cal G}_m$, $(m \in {\mathbb N})$, in terms of these algebras. They can be regarded as the elliptic deformation of the local and nonlocal integrals of motion for the conformal field theory.

A remark on the integrals of motion associated with level $k$ realization of the elliptic algebra $U_{q,p}(sl_2^)$

We give one parameter deformation of level $k$ free field realization of the screening current of the elliptic algebra $U_{q,p}(sl_2^)$. By means of these free field realizations, we construct infinitly many commutative operators, which we call the nonlocal integrals of motion associated with level $k$ realization of the elliptic algebra $U_{q,p}(sl_2^)$. They are given as integrals involving a product of the screening current and elliptic theta functions. This paper give level $k$ generalization of the nonlocal integrals of motion given in [arXiv:0705.0427].

We explicitly construct two classes of infinitly many commutative operators in terms of the deformed Virasoro algebra. We call one of them local integrals and the other nonlocal one, since they can be regarded as elliptic deformations of the local and nonlocal integrals of motion obtained by V.Bazhanov, S.Lukyanov and Al.Zamolodchikov.

We explicitly construct two classes of infinitly many commutative operators in terms of the deformed W-algebra $W_{qt}(sl_N^)$, and give proofs of the commutation relations of these operators. We call one of them local integrals of motion and the other nonlocal one, since they can be regarded as elliptic deformation of local and nonlocal integrals of motion for the $W_N$ algebra.

The Integrals of Motion for the Deformed W-Algebra Wqt(sl_N^)

We review the deformed W-algebra Wqt(sl_N^) and its screening currents. We explicitly construct the local integrals of motion I_n for this deformed W-algebra. We explicitly construct the nonlocal integrals of motion G_n by means of the screening currents. Our integrals of motion commute with each other, and give the elliptic version of those for the Virasoro algebra and the W-algebra W(sl_3^), obtained by V.Bazhanov, A.Hibberd, S.Khoroshkin, S.Lukyanov and Al.Zamolodchikov.

The SU(n) invariant massive Thirring model with boundary reflection

We study the SU(n) invariant massive Thirring model with boundary reflection. Our approach is based on the free field approach. We construct the free field realizations of the boundary state and its dual. For an application of these realizations, we present integral representations for the form factors of the local operators.

Finite XXZ critical chain with double boundaries

Finite XXZ chain with double boundaries is considered at critical regime $-1<Δ<1$. We construct the eigenvectors of finite Hamiltonian by means of vertex operators and the quasi-boundary states. Using the free field realizations of the vertex operators and the quasi-boundary states, integral representations for the correlation functions are derived.
