$β$-Decay Half-Lives of 55 Neutron-Rich Isotopes beyond the N=82 Shell Gap

The $β$-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei $^{134-139}$Sn, $^{134-142}$Sb, $^{137-144}$Te, $^{140-146}$I, $^{142-148}$Xe, $^{145-151}$Cs, $^{148-153}$Ba, $^{151-155}$La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of $^{238}$U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of $r$ process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ($A$ $\approx$ 130) peak.

First direct measurement of the $^{11}$C($α$, p)$^{14}$N stellar reaction by an extended thick-target method

The $^{11}$C($α$, p) reaction is an important $α$-induced reaction competing with $β$-limited hydrogen-burning processes in high-temperature explosive stars. We directly measured its reaction cross sections both for the ground-state transition ($α$, $p_{0}$) and the excited-state transitions ($α$, $p_{1}$) and ($α$, $p_{2}$) at relevant stellar energies 1.3 - 4.5 MeV by an extended thick-target method featuring time of flight for the first time. We revised the reaction rate by numerical integration including the ($α$, $p_{1}$) and ($α$, $p_{2}$) contributions and also low-lying resonances of ($α$, $p_{0}$) using both the present and the previous experimental data which were totally neglected in the previous compilation works. The present total reaction rate lies between the previous ($α$, $p_{0}$) rate and the total rate of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculation, which is consistent with the relevant explosive hydrogen-burning scenarios such as the $νp$-process.

Nuclear structure of 140Te with N = 88: Structural symmetry and asymmetry in Te isotopes with respect to the double-shell closure Z = 50 and N = 82

We study for the first time the internal structure of 140Te through the beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of 140Sb. The very neutron-rich 140Sb, Z = 51 and N = 89, ions were produced by the in-flight fission of 238U beam on a 9Be target at 345 MeV per nucleon at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory, RIKEN. The half-life and spin-parity of 140Sb are reported as 124(30) ms and (4-), respectively. In addition to the excited states of 140Te produced by the beta-decay branch, the beta-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron emission branches were also established. By identifying the first 2+ and 4+ excited states of 140Te, we found that Te isotopes persist their vibrator character with E(4+)/E(2+) = 2. We discuss the distinctive features manifest in this region, such as valence neutron symmetry and asymmetry, revealed in pairs of isotopes with the same neutron holes and particles with respect to N = 82.

First application of the Trojan Horse Method with a Radioactive Ion Beam: study of the $^{18}$F($p,α$)$^{15}$O}} reaction at astrophysical energies

Measurement of nuclear cross sections at astrophysical energies involving unstable species is one of the most challenging tasks in experimental nuclear physics. The use of indirect methods is often unavoidable in this scenario. In this paper the Trojan Horse Method is applied for the first time to a radioactive ion beam induced reaction studying the $^{18}$F($p,α$)$^{15}$O process at low energies relevant to astrophysics via the three body reaction $^{2}$H($^{18}$F,$α^{15}$O)n. The knowledge of the $^{18}$F($p, α$)$^{15}$O reaction rate is crucial to understand the nova explosion phenomena. The cross section of this reaction is characterized by the presence of several resonances in $^{19}$Ne and possibly interference effects among them. The results reported in Literature are not satisfactory and new investigations of the $^{18}$F($p,α$)$^{15}$O reaction cross section will be useful. In the present work the spin-parity assignments of relevant levels have been discussed and the astrophysical S-factor has been extracted considering also interference effects

Investigation of thermonuclear $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na rate via resonant elastic scattering of $^{21}$Na+$p$

The $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na reaction is thought to be one of the key breakout reactions from the hot CNO cycles to the rp-process in type I x-ray bursts. In this work, the resonant properties of the compound nucleus $^{22}$Mg have been investigated by measuring the resonant elastic scattering of $^{21}$Na+$p$. An 89 MeV $^{21}$Na radioactive beam delivered from the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam Separator bombarded an 8.8 mg/cm$^2$ thick polyethylene (CH$_{2}$)$_{n}$ target. The $^{21}$Na beam intensity was about 2$\times$10$^{5}$ pps, with a purity of about 70% on target. The recoiled protons were measured at the center-of-mass scattering angles of $θ_{c.m.}$$\approx$175.2${^\circ}$, 152.2${^\circ}$, and 150.5${^\circ}$ by three sets of $ΔE$-$E$ telescopes, respectively. The excitation function was obtained with the thick-target method over energies $E_x$($^{22}$Mg)=5.5--9.2 MeV. In total, 23 states above the proton-threshold in $^{22}$Mg were observed, and their resonant parameters were determined via an $R$-matrix analysis of the excitation functions. We have made several new $J^π$ assignments and confirmed some tentative assignments made in previous work. The thermonuclear $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na rate has been recalculated based on our recommended spin-parity assignments. The astrophysical impact of our new rate has been investigated through one-zone postprocessing x-ray burst calculations. We find that the $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na rate significantly affects the peak nuclear energy generation rate, reaction fluxes, as well as the onset temperature of this breakout reaction in these astrophysical phenomena.

The 18Ne(a,p)21Na breakout reaction in x-ray bursts: experimental determination of spin-parities for alpha resonances in 22Mg via resonant elastic scattering of 21Na+p

The $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na reaction provides a pathway for breakout from the hot CNO cycles to the $rp$-process in type I x-ray bursts. To better determine this astrophysical reaction rate, the resonance parameters of the compound nucleus $^{22}$Mg have been investigated by measuring the resonant elastic scattering of $^{21}$Na+$p$. An 89 MeV $^{21}$Na radioactive ion beam was produced at the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam Separator and bombarded an 8.8 mg/cm$^2$ thick polyethylene target. The recoiled protons were measured at scattering angles of $θ_{c.m.}$$\approx 175 {^\circ}$ and 152${^\circ}$ by three $ΔE$-$E$ silicon telescopes. The excitation function was obtained with a thick-target method over energies $E_x$($^{22}$Mg)=5.5--9.2 MeV. The resonance parameters have been determined through an $R$-matrix analysis. For the first time, the $J^π$ values for ten states above the alpha threshold in $^{22}$Mg have been experimentally determined in a single consistent measurement. We have made three new $J^π$ assignments and confirmed seven of the ten tentative assignments in the previous work. The $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na reaction rate has been recalculated, and the astrophysical impact of our new rate has been investigated through one-zone postprocessing x-ray burst calculations. We find that the $^{18}$Ne($α$,$p$)$^{21}$Na rate significantly affects the peak nuclear energy generation rate and the onset temperature of this breakout reaction in these phenomena.

Nuclear structure of 30S and its implications for nucleosynthesis in classical novae

The uncertainty in the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction rate over the temperature range of 0.1 - 1.3 GK was previously determined to span ~4 orders of magnitude due to the uncertain location of two previously unobserved 3+ and 2+ resonances in the 4.7 - 4.8 MeV excitation region in 30S. Therefore, the abundances of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae, which are relevant for the identification of presolar grains of putative nova origin, were uncertain by a factor of 3. To investigate the level structure of 30S above the proton threshold (4394.9(7) keV), a charged-particle spectroscopy and an in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments were performed. Differential cross sections of the 32S(p,t)30S reaction were measured at 34.5 MeV. Distorted wave Born approximation calculations were performed to constrain the spin-parity assignments of the observed levels. An energy level scheme was deduced from gamma-gamma coincidence measurements using the 28Si(3He,n-gamma)30S reaction. Spin-parity assignments based on measurements of gamma-ray angular distributions and gamma-gamma directional correlation from oriented nuclei were made for most of the observed levels of 30S. As a result, the resonance energies corresponding to the excited states in 4.5 MeV - 6 MeV region, including the two astrophysically important states predicted previously, are measured with significantly better precision than before. The uncertainty in the rate of the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction is substantially reduced over the temperature range of interest. Finally, the influence of this rate on the abundance ratios of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae are obtained via 1D hydrodynamic nova simulations.

Universality and Critical Behavior at the Critical-End-Point on Itinerant-Metamagnet UCoAl

We performed nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements on itinerant-electron metamagnet UCoAl in order to investigate the critical behavior of the magnetism near a metamagnetic (MM) critical endpoint (CEP). We derived c-axis magnetization $M_c$ and its fluctuation $S_c$ from the measurements of Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ as a function of the c-axis external field ($H_c$) and temperature ($T$). We developed contour plots of $M_c$ and $S_c$ on the $H_c$ - $T$ phase diagram, and observed the strong divergence of $S_c$ at the CEP. The critical exponents of $M_c$ and $S_c$ near the CEP are estimated, and found to be close to the universal properties of a three-dimensional (3-D) Ising model. We indicate that the critical phenomena at the itinerant-electron MM CEP in UCoAl have a common feature as a gas-liquid transition.

4f-derived Fermi Surfaces of CeRu2(Si[1-x]Ge[x])2 near the Quantum Critical Point: Resonant Soft X-ray ARPES Study

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in the Ce 3d-4f excitation region was measured for the paramagnetic state of CeRu2Si2, CeRu2(Si0.82Ge0.18)2, and LaRu2Si2 to investigate the changes of the 4$f$ electron Fermi surfaces around the quantum critical point. While the difference of the Fermi surfaces between CeRu2Si2 and LaRu2Si2 was experimentally confirmed, a strong 4f-electron character was observed in the band structures and the Fermi surfaces of CeRu2Si2 and CeRu2(Si0.82Ge0.18)2, consequently indicating a delocalized nature of the 4$f$ electrons in both compounds. The absence of Fermi surface reconstruction across the critical composition suggests that SDW quantum criticality is more appropriate than local quantum criticality in CeRu2(Si[1-x]Ge[x])2.

Radiation Damage Study for PHENIX Silicon Stripixel Sensors

Silicon stripixel sensors which were developed at BNL will be installed as part of the RHIC-PHENIX silicon vertex tracker (VTX). RHIC II operations provide luminosity up to 2x10^32 /cm2/s so the silicon stripixel sensors will be exposed to a significant amount of radiation. The most problematic radiation effect for VTX is the increase of leakage current, which degrades the signal to noise ratio and may saturate the readout electronics. We studied the radiation damage using the same diodes as CERN-RD48. First, the proportionality between the irradiation fluence and the increase of leakage current of CERN-RD48 was reproduced. Then beam experiments with stripixel sensor were done in which leakage current was found to increase in the same way as that of thereference diode. A stripixel sensor was also irradiated at the PHENIX interaction region (IR) during the 2006 run. We found the same relation between the integrated luminosity and determined fluence from increase of leakage current. The expected fluence is 3-6x10^12 Neq/cm2 (1 MeV neutron equivalent) in RHIC II operations for 10 years. Due to this expected exposure, setting the operating temperature in PHENIX to T< 0 deg. C to suppress leakage current is needed to avoid saturation of preamplifiers.

Candidate chiral doublet bands in the odd-odd nucleus $^{126}$Cs

The candidate chiral doublet bands recently observed in $^{126}$Cs have been extended to higher spins, several new linking transitions between the two partner members of the chiral doublet bands are observed, and $γ$$-$intensities related to the chiral doublet bands are presented by analyzing the $γ$$-$$γ$ coincidence data collected earlier at the NORDBALL through the $^{116}$Cd$($$^{14}$N, 4n$)$$^{126}$Cs reaction at a beam energy of 65 MeV. The intraband $B(M1)/B(E2)$ and interband $B(M1)_{in}/B(M1)_{out}$ ratios and the energy staggering parameter, S(I), have been deduced for these doublet bands. The results are found to be consistent with the chiral interpretation for the two structures. Furthermore, the observation of chiral doublet bands in $^{126}$Cs together with those in $^{124}$Cs, $^{128}$Cs, $^{130}$Cs and $^{132}$Cs also indicates that the chiral conditions do not change rapidly with decreasing neutron number in these odd-odd Cesium isotopes.

Magnetisation dynamics in the normal and condensate phases of UPd2Al3 I: Surveys in reciprocal space using neutron inelastic scattering

This paper, I, presents new results from neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd2Al3. The focus is on the experimental position whilst the sequel, II, advances theoretical perspectives. We present a detailed and complete characterisation of the wavevector- and energy-dependent magnetisation dynamics in UPd2Al3 as measured by neutron inelastic scattering primarily in the form of extensive surveys in energy-momentum space under a wide range of experimental conditions, and put our observations in context with data that has been previously published by two independent groups. In this way we emphasize the commonality and robust nature of the data which indicate the intricate nature of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of this material. Our results yield unique insight into the low temperature ground state which exhibits a microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity making UPd2Al3 one of the most accessible heavy-fermion superconductors that can be fully characterised by neutron spectroscopy.

The Magnetic Phase Diagram and the Pressure and Field Dependence of the Fermi Surface in UGe$_2$

The ac susceptibility and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in UGe$_2$ are measured at pressures {\it P} up to 17.7 kbar for the magnetic field {\it B} parallel to the {\it a} axis, which is the easy axis of magnetization. Two anomalies are observed at {\it B$_x$}({\it P}) and {\it B}$_m$({\it P}) ({\it B$_x$} $>$ {\it B}$_m$ at any {\it P}), and the {\it P}-{\it B} phase diagram is presented. The Fermi surface and quasiparticle mass are found to vary smoothly with pressure up to 17.7 kbar unless the phase boundary {\it B$_x$}({\it P}) is crossed. The observed dHvA frequencies may be grouped into three according to their pressure dependences, which are largely positive, nearly constant or negative. It is suggested that the quasiparticle mass moderately increases as the boundary {\it B$_x$}({\it P}) is approached. DHvA effect measurements are also performed across the boundary at 16.8 kbar.
