Ferromagnetic 0-pi Junctions as Classical Spins

The ground state of highly damped PdNi based 0-pi ferromagnetic Josephson junctions shows a spontaneous half quantum vortex, sustained by a supercurrent of undetermined sign. This supercurrent flows in the electrode of a Josephson junction used as a detector and produces a phi(0)/4 shift in its magnetic diffraction pattern. We have measured the statistics of the positive or negative sign shift occurring at the superconducting transition of such a junction. The randomness of the shift sign, the reproducibility of its magnitude and the possibility of achieving exact flux compensation upon field cooling: all these features show that 0-pi junctions behave as classical spins, just as magnetic nanoparticles with uniaxial anisotropy.

Electrical Spin Injection in Multi-Wall carbon NanoTubes with transparent ferromagnetic contacts

We report on electrical spin injection measurements on MWNTs . We use a ferromagnetic alloy Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$ with x $\approx$ 0.7 which allows to obtain devices with resistances as low as 5.6 $kΩ$ at 300 $K$. The yield of device resistances below 100 $kΩ$, at 300 $K$, is around 50%. We measure at 2 $K$ a hysteretic magneto-resistance due to the magnetization reversal of the ferromagnetic leads. The relative difference between the resistance in the antiparallel (AP) orientation and the parallel (P) orientation is about 2%.

Shot-noise and conductance measurements of transparent superconductor / two-dimensional electron gas junctions

We have measured the conductance and shot-noise of superconductor-normal metal (S-N) junctions between a Niobium (Nb) film and a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), formed in an InAs-based semiconductor heterostructure. Adjacent to the junction, the 2DEG is shaped into a submicrometer beam-splitter. The current shot-noise measured through one arm of the beam-splitter is found to be enhanced due to Andreev reflection. Both noise and conductance measurements indicate that the Nb-2DEG interface is of high quality with a transparency approaching approx. 60-70 %. The present device can be seen as a quasi-ballistic S-N beam-splitter junction.

On the Kondo effect in carbon nanotubes at half halfing

In a single state of a quantum dot the Kondo effect arises due to the spin-degeneracy, which is present if the dot is occupied with one electron (N = 1). The eigenstates of a carbon nanotube quantum dot possess an additional orbital degeneracy leading to a four-fold shell pattern. This additional degeneracy increases the possibility for the Kondo effect to appear. We revisit the Kondo problem in metallic carbon nanotubes by linear and non-linear transport measurement in this regime, in which the four-fold pattern is present. We have analyzed the ground state of CNTs, which were grown by chemical vapor deposition, at filling N = 1, N = 2, and N = 3. Of particular interest is the half-filled shell, i.e. N = 2. In this case, the ground state is either a paired electron state or a state for which the singlet and triplet states are effectively degenerate, allowing in the latter case for the appearance of the Kondo effect. We deduce numbers for the effective missmatch d of the levels from perfect degeneracy and the exchange energy J. While d ~ 0.1 - 0.2 (in units of level spacing) is in agreement with previous work, the exchange term is found to be surprisingly small: J < 0.02. In addition we report on the observation of gaps, which in one case is seen at N = 3 and in another is present over an extended sequence of levels.

Kondo resonance in a nanotube quantum dot coupled to a normal and a superconducting lead

We report on electrical transport measurements through a carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to a normal and a superconducting lead. The ratio of Kondo temperature and superconducting gap $T_{K}/Δ$ is identified to govern the transport properties of the system. In the case of $T_{K}<Δ$ the conductance resonance splits into two resonances at $\pm Δ$. For the opposite scenario $T_{K}>Δ$ the conductance resonance persists, however the conductance is not enhanced compared to the normal state due to a relative asymmetry of the lead-dot couplings. Within this limit the data is in agreement with a simple model of a resonant SN-interface.

Isolated hybrid normal/superconducting ring in a magnetic flux: from persistent current to Josephson current

We investigate the ground state current of an isolated hybrid normal/superconducting ring (NS ring), threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux. We calculate the excitation spectrum of the ring for any values of the lengths of the normal metal and of the superconductor. We describe the nonlinear flux dependence of the energy levels above and below the gap edge. Using a harmonics expansion for the current, we isolate the contribution due to these nonlinearities and we show that it vanishes for large normal segment length. The remaining contribution is very easy to evaluate from the linearized low energy spectrum. This decomposition allows us to recover in a controlled way the current-flux relationships for SNS junctions and for NS rings. We also study the crossover from persistent current to Josephson current in a multichannel NS ring at finite temperature.

Feromagnetic "$π$"-junctions

We investigate Josephson coupling through a ferromagnetic thin film using Superconductor-Insulator-Ferromagnet-Superconductor planar junctions. Damped oscillations of the critical current are observed as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. We show that they result from the exchange energy gained or lost by a quasiparticle Andreev-reflected at the ferromagnet-superconductor interface. The critical current cancels out at the transition from positive ("0") to negative ("$π$") coupling, in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Oscillations of the superconducting order parameter in a ferromagnet

Planar tunneling spectroscopy reveals damped oscillations of the superconducting order parameter induced into a ferromagnetic thin film by the proximity effect. The oscillations are due to the finite momentum transfer provided to Cooper pairs by the splitting of the spin up and down bands in the ferromagnet. As a consequence, for negative values of the superconducting order parameter the tunneling spectra are capsized ("$π$-state"). The oscillations' damping and period are set by the same length scale, which depends on the spin polarization.

Andreev Bound States and Josephson Coupling in YBCO/Pb tunnel junction

We have made in-situ [103] and [110]YBCO/Pb junctions, which display an hysteretic behaviour with both a well-defined Quasi-Particule branch and a Josephson current. A zero energy conductance peak is observed in the tunneling conductance which is a signature of Andreev Bound States (ABS) at a surface of a d-wave superconductor. The observed splitting of this peak at low temperature may confirm the existence of a surface state which breaks time-reversal symmetry. However, up to now, we have not seen any evidence of a coupling between Josephson current and the zero-energy ABS, predicted by Y. Tanaka and S. Kashiwaya (PRB 56 p.892).
