Stability of parabolic Harnack inequalities on metric measure spaces

Let $(X,d,μ)$ be a metric measure space with a local regular Dirichlet form. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a parabolic Harnack inequality with global space-time scaling exponent $β\ge 2$ to hold. We show that this parabolic Harnack inequality is stable under rough isometries. As a consequence, once such a Harnack inequality is established on a metric measure space, then it holds for any uniformly elliptic operator in divergence form on a manifold naturally defined from the graph approximation of the space.

Subsequential scaling limits of simple random walk on the two-dimensional uniform spanning tree

The first main result of this paper is that the law of the (rescaled) two-dimensional uniform spanning tree is tight in a space whose elements are measured, rooted real trees continuously embedded into Euclidean space. Various properties of the intrinsic metrics, measures and embeddings of the subsequential limits in this space are obtained, with it being proved in particular that the Hausdorff dimension of any limit in its intrinsic metric is almost surely equal to $8/5$. In addition, the tightness result is applied to deduce that the annealed law of the simple random walk on the two-dimensional uniform spanning tree is tight under a suitable rescaling. For the limiting processes, which are diffusions on random real trees embedded into Euclidean space, detailed transition density estimates are derived.

Time-changes of stochastic processes associated with resistance forms

Given a sequence of resistance forms that converges with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff-vague topology and satisfies a uniform volume doubling condition, we show the convergence of corresponding Brownian motions and local times. As a corollary of this, we obtain the convergence of time-changed processes. Examples of our main results include scaling limits of Liouville Brownian motion, the Bouchaud trap model and the random conductance model on trees and self-similar fractals. For the latter two models, we show that under some assumptions the limiting process is a FIN diffusion on the relevant space.

A direct numerical simulation method for complex modulus of particle dispersions

We report an extension of the smoothed profile method (SPM)[Y. Nakayama, K. Kim, and R. Yamamoto, Eur. Phys. J. E {\bf 26}, 361(2008)], a direct numerical simulation method for calculating the complex modulus of the dispersion of particles, in which we introduce a temporally oscillatory external force into the system. The validity of the method was examined by evaluating the storage $G'(ω)$ and loss $G"(ω)$ moduli of a system composed of identical spherical particles dispersed in an incompressible Newtonian host fluid at volume fractions of $Φ=0$, 0.41, and 0.51. The moduli were evaluated at several frequencies of shear flow; the shear flow used here has a zigzag profile, as is consistent with the usual periodic boundary conditions.

Effect of pressure on steplike magnetostriction of single crystalline (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ bilayered manganite

e report the effect of pressure on the steplike magnetostriction of single crystalline bilayered manganite (LaPr)1.2Sr1.8Mn2O8, for our understandings of the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase. The application of pressure suppresses a steplike transformation and causes a broad change in the magnetostriction. The injection of an electric current to the crystal also weakens the steplike variation in both the magnetostriction and magnetoresistance. The stabilization of ferromagnetic interaction or the delocalization of charge carriers is promoted with the applied pressure or applied current, resulting in the suppressed steplike behavior. Our findings suggest that the step phenomenon is closely related to the existence of localized carriers such as the short-range charge-orbital ordered clusters.

Convergence of symmetric Markov chains on $\Z^d$

For each $n$ let $Y^n_t$ be a continuous time symmetric Markov chain with state space $n^{-1} \Z^d$. A condition in terms of the conductances is given for the convergence of the $Y^n_t$ to a symmetric Markov process $Y_t$ on $\R^d$. We have weak convergence of $\{Y^n_t: t\leq t_0\}$ for every $t_0$ and every starting point. The limit process $Y$ has a continuous part and may also have jumps.

Steplike Lattice Deformation of Single Crystalline (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ Bilayered Manganite

We report a steplike lattice transformation of single crystalline (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$bilayered manganite accompanied by both magnetization and magnetoresistive jumps, and examine the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase accompanied by a huge decrease in resistance. Our findings support that the abrupt magnetostriction is closely related to an orbital frustration existing in the inhomogeneous paramagnetic insulating phase rather than a martensitic scenario between competing two phases.

Anomalous pressure effect on the remanent lattice striction of a (La,Pr)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ bilayered manganite single crystal

We have studied the pressure effect on magnetostriction, both in the $ab$-plane and along the c-axis, of a (La,Pr)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ bilayered manganite single crystal over the temperature region where the field-induced ferromagnetic metal (FMM) transition takes place. For comparison, we have also examined the pressure dependence of magnetization curves at the corresponding temperatures. The applied pressure reduces the critical field of the FMM transition and it enhances the remanent magnetostriction. An anomalous pressure effect on the remanent lattice relaxation is observed and is similar to the pressure effect on the remanent magnetization along the c-axis. These findings are understood from the view point that the double-exchange interaction driven FMM state is strengthened by application of pressure.

Elastic and magnetic properties on field-induced Metal-Insulator transition of bilayer manganese oxide $(La_{1-z} Pr_z)_{1.2} Sr_{1.8} Mn_2 O_7$ ($z$=0.6)

The elastic and magnetic properties of a single crystal of 327 bilayer manganese oxide $(La_{1-z} Pr_z)_{1.2} Sr_{1.8} Mn_2 O_7$ with $z$=0.6 have been investigated by ultrasonic and high-field magnetization measurements. A distinct elastic anomaly was observed at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields when crossing the phase boundary. A pronounced elastic softening as a function of magnetic field ($H$) appears across the boundary of the low-temperature magnetic phase below around 40 K, accompanied by a distinct hysteresis. In the high field region, however, these elastic constants exhibit an increase with increasing a magnetic field in the high-field region. The high-field magnetization measurement characterizing the magnetic state clarified a strong connection between elastic strains and magnetic moments. The new metamagnetic transition was found in the high-field region above 40 K, accompanied with no hysteresis. The present results of elastic constants are discussed in terms of a coupling effect between elastic strains associated with sound waves and relevant magnetic moments, and relevant conduction bands. They are explained reasonably in terms of a strong coupling between elastic strains and magnetic susceptibility $chi$$_{m}$=$partial$$M$/$partial$$H$.
